I remember way back when this came out and thought why wouldn't people raise an eyebrow that the VR headset you put on your HEAD have a microwave capability, something that could fry electronics much less your own brain. The internet would be questioning this constantly and people would be asking how safe this is. Even if the villain of the first season somehow hid the real specs of a microwave emitter that's powerful enough to fry brains, the MOMENT the headset is released, we'd have tech RUclipsrs eager to tear it apart and examine it and THEY will find the microwave emitter that's capable of frying your brains

Because we live in a society that's all about being distracted with entertainment and RUclipsrs have made careers in tearing down new technology, that's my point. When the current gen gaming consoles came out, there were quite a few channels and articles that talks about it, comparisons about specs and breakdowns. A literal game changing device like the NERV gear is getting EVERYONE'S attention, good press and bad press and in the age of social media even the tiniest thing will be brought up, leading to responses from the developers on safety or the fact that this device literally puts you into a dream like coma just so you can play the game.
Hell, Kirito even points out that he KNEW the device essentially messes with your brain so you can't physically pull the device off yourself. Like I said, if this was invented in the "real world" that we live in, people would quickly try to point out defects or if this system is actually safe to use. The beta testers would try to break it down and put it back together.

I think where SAO season 1 lost me was how everyone just stopped worrying about getting out of the game and only by the end did they just randomly figure out who and where the villain is and remember “oh yeah weren’t we trying to escape before?”. As for Kirito himself? He’s a Gary Stu. He survives experiences that should have killed him and for very eye rolling reasons (season 2 is guilty of this also). As for the “the viewer is supposed to be him” point? Eh, I see where you’re going with that, but honestly I don’t think that works anywhere except for an actual video game, where we the player have the option to choose how the player character acts. But SAO is an anime where we’re just watching things happen, the main character is already prescripted with a set path, we don’t get a say in what he does.

They really could've done something interesting by having some people just grow comfortable with the game and make a statement on how fucked that is or show some sort of message of "finding peace in hell". But it comes off more stupid because the show doesn't go dark enough to earn that so instead we get "hey, kirito! I'm random old guy background character. Wanna ho fishing?" Think of all the people that live horrible lives in the real world so they use the game world to escape from that. You could have someone who was suicide irl but in sao they're now powerful. They can kill monsters and be an insanely powerful player, the idea that sao is both a heaven and hell would be amazing if the show actually chose to focus more on it's themes and take risk instead of playing it mostly safe.

almost every main character and antagonist is like that.
      Examples:
Kirito wants to escape the reality and the fact of being adopted.
Asuna wants to escape her horrible family. In VR she has finally has control over her life
Sinon wants to escape her weakness and PTSD
Yukki Konno, has a several medical issues, and can only have fun in VR.
Death Gun: Disliked by his family and became a player killer to feel powerful
Shinkawa Kyouji: Gets bullied in school, starts playing vr games to feel more powerful
Oberon: Has a inferiority complex towards Kayaba, so he wants to use VR to feel like a god
There is a even a episode about a married couple that got stuck in the game and how both reacted differently.
Griselda, a common house wife becomes a confident warrior.
Grimlock, the husband, becomes extremely depressed and hires assassin to kill his wife because he refuses to accept her new confidence as a reality, he refuses to accept a world where he is not the stronger in the relationship.
"the idea that sao is both a heaven and hell " is very present in this series, I can even give more examples.

@@aincradarchive tbh I only watched season 1. I'm not that interested in much else. If it seriously gets better I might be interested. I'm just judging from what I've seen, the show comes off more edgy to me. It wants to be taken seriously but at the same time just really falls back before it gets too dark. The reason I say edgy is because it feels like someone just trying to be cool and deep without either understanding are not wanting to go too far. I agree with the original post because it really does feel like they just don't take it as seriously as they should. All of kiritos friends die (I'll admit wasn't a bad episode) and then he kinda just forgets about them. Yeah, I know they're brought up but it feels like he gets over it pretty well. By the end he gets a gamer gf and then all the horrific shit he's seen he just kinda brushes off as "yeah well that sucked but atleast I have my girlfriend so it isn't so bad". It comes off as close minded and stupid to me that he just ends up looking back on this as a fond memory, as if he and thousands of people didn't just watch their friends die.

So here's my two cent regarding Sword Art Online and it's significance to modern day Indonesian culture: This Anime was and still is one of the most famous Isekai show in my country, Indonesia. And there's a strong reason for it: You see, when this anime aired in 2012/2013 most Indonesians were too broke to afford the expensive subscription in order to watch this Anime. So the only way we could watch SAO (and any other anime) as broke midde school students were to stream/download illegal anime on roadside Intenet Cafes known as WarNet. Now these WarNet themselves are quite interesting place to discuss since they tend to be dirty, poorly ventilated and provide you with low spec trash-tier PC..
But the thing is, it's fine, since most of the customers who visit these places are broke students or NEET who tend to play low-spec free-to-play MMORPG like Atlantica anyways.
So for many Indonesians of my age, SAO is often associated with those good old days as online gamers who threw around casual profanity and racism for hours on end. Of course now, as adults we know SAO is trash, the plot is full of holes and the horrible execution of the theme and premise are hard to ignore. But nevertheless, we still cherish SAO.
And what even more amazing is how this comunity of former online gamers are amongst the least racist people in Indonesia, in spite of our casual racism. I'm a bataknese, a double minority non muslim group that are ussualy discriminated openly by the rest of Indonesian society. You can easily differenciate us apart from the rest of Indonesians based on the fact that we're taller and more muscular in comparison to most Indonesians. Yet none of my former online gamers friends ever treat me in a discriminative manner. In short, this trash Anime brought together wholesome people, and it is nowhere as bad as pretentious AniTubers paints it to be..

slightly unrelated but I'd also add that, whilst S1 already alluded to the topic of the 'authenticity' of feelings in a fictitious environment, S2 again takes the subplot and gives it a nice conclusion wrapping it up nicely. Full disclosure, this was the first anime I followed as it came out when I started trying to get into anime (I'm a gamer at heart at the end of the day) in 2012, so I'll admit I was part of the wandwagon at the end of the day. Thing is, I never truly got attached to the series because it failed at what I was actually looking forward in the series: a realistic depiction of a video game anime. I tried watching .hack///sign before watching SAO, and got somewhat into it before it got boring with the mystery of the cat person being the kid mother's and what-not. The video game stuff just felt tagged on and combat just followed the rool of cool animation, flashy attacks that are limited only by the animator's skill and series budget, instead of the rule of video games, limited attacks that follow a set of rules that's limited by the engine and the complexity of the code. There was no questing nor grinding, staples of MMO-RPGs and the reason Kirito was supposed to be as strong as he was, just in passing as comments. At the end of the day, *THIS* was the reason I never got into SAO and other Isekai animes.
Then GGO came and dropped it halfway there. It was a somewhat cool premise, but really stupid execution. Didn't like Kirito's melodrama over killing a happy murderer, nor did I like stupid stuff in the adaptation like having Kirito say "Shoot the guy" but the anime wasted minutes to do anything just to build tension, I'm not a fan of that. Good thing I did cause I wouldn't have liked the ending, nor subsequent sequels. A couple of years later I saw Digibro's video shitting on SAO Part 2 and thats when I jumped on the hate wandwagon.

Brutal Legend is an Isekai. The fact that it's both a Western Isekai, and that it does the genre really well is shocking. RTS gameplay aside, and ignoring the fact Eddie Riggs is a Gary Stu, it's a pretty great game with a fun story.

"I hear it gets better in later seasons"
I mean, not really? SAO II had a really cool concept, but it absolutely suffered because Kirito had to be in it, and he just HAD to use a fucking sword in a game revolving around guns. The only genuinely good later season is the spinoff SAO Alternative: Gun Gale Online. And the whole reason it works is because literally none of the characters from any other arc are in it, and it's written by a competent story teller.
That said, Chapter 16.5 is a literary masterpiece, surely greater than all the works of the Great Library of Alexandria.

"I don't have time to look at the rest of the series."
Somehow finds chapter 16.5 of all things-
The reason why Kirito's characterization is all over the place is because a lot of it doesn't even come from the original story.
Aincrad was written in 2001 as a short story and published in 2002. It started on the 74th floor, then went through a flashback sequence of Kayaba's announcement and then it went straight to the ending with the KoB guild shenanigans. Everything else in the anime were taken from short stories written throughout the years-for example the murder mystery comes from a short story compilation novel he wrote years later.
I'd say that Alicization is pretty decent though, even if they still didn't do a good job of explaining some mechanics.

    • @seg162
      @seg162 2 года назад

It's less that it started on the 74th floor, and more that it skipped from floor 1 to floor 74 in the space between chapter 1 and chapter 2.
But-- finally, someone else around with the obscure(?) knowledge.

escapes in a video game. To play with his only friends friends that are now gone when he was isekai He is now reborn in the game filled with responsibilities of taking care of his and friends hard work. Ainz is not a harem protagonist, or a underserved overpowered character. He has knowledge, he plans, and has his own character traits that makes him feel like a own unique protagonist.

I really liked SAO but I understand why people hate it and it has some major bad and stupid moments that really ruine the whole worldbuilding.
that being said what I like most of SAO are the few emotional moments, the times when things got pretty depressing and dark, particularly what stand out for me is,
    1. the moment Kirito loses his guildmates and friends in the second episode of the first season, afterwards Kirito is obsessed with finding a way to bring his lost teammate Sachi back from the dead and goes on a almost suicidal quest to try and find an item that brings people back from the dead and he does get the item, the catch is it only works on people who died I think 2 hours, which makes him go solo for a while and be the edgy dark character people both hate and love.
    2. after spending some time with Asuna after getting ''married'' they are recalled back by the guild commander telling them they need their best players for the next boss (last team got destroyed) Kirito does not want to go back and begs Asuna to just forget about getting out and just stay in the nice parts of the world and just be together there, Asuna explains that in the first few months some people just died without any real cause and wonders if it's because their biological bodies must be kept alive in hospitals and some people's bodies just died, at some point their bodies too are just going to collapse and she wants to get out of the world so she can hug and feel Kirito in real life and perhaps have/be a family.
    3. I think the last part that stuck with me that I remember was near the end of season 2 (spoilers for those of you who have not seen it) some amasing swordswoman is challenging people for sword duel and she actually beats Kirito, what turns out is the woman is a terminally ill girl who is kept in a coma like state with not much time left and she has spend most of her life in the video game world, for her life itself has been the game and the arc is basically her enjoying the last few days of her life and then dying, it's really sad and depressing.
anyways those bit stuck out for me, I enjoyed it for what it is, frankly the abridged series of SAO is so much better than the original, it makes fun of the plot holes, the characters are more fleshed out and the humor is just awesome, it's one of the best.

Youjo Senki is my favourite Isekai anime. It still has some of the tropes others have, but the protagonist has a very distinct personality and there's a lot of deeper themes about God and humanity, hell, Tanya doesn't even want to be this badass warrior. She's constantly trying to get away from the front lines because she despises war. She just happens to be really fucking good at it.

My main issue with SAO is that it has a REALLY cool premise and it squanders it entirely. It also bugged me that we never saw any kind of progression at all. He's like level 80 on episode 2 lol.
Finally, we're given one golden rule of this game - You die if your HP drops to 0... Except Kirito doesn't... He will-powers through being stabbed in the chest. I guess all those other people that died just didn't want to live hard enough....
