The greatest rock & roll / rockabilly / blue eyed soul / blues / and too country for the radio singer in the whole wide world! One of the greatest live performers ever always with a dynamite tight band and have every recording he ever made!!! Delbert has given so many people so much JOY & HAPPINESS!
I think it was Eric Burdon of The Animals fame, The British Invasion, who wrote of music, "it's all meat from the same bone"- I just "discovered" him Sept. 2022, via Pete Seger and Stringbean- on the RUclips page, as I read about the awful murder of Stringbean and his wife, for a paltry sum, I saw this "cat"- I figured he was Hee Haw country which I don't know much about but seeing him, naturally as a LOVER OF ALL GENRES- CLASSICAL AND JAZZ AND MEDIEVAL PASSION PLAYS! I LOVE IT ALL, EVEN RAP, ( only in small doses) - I'll be frank, I suffer from a chronic emotional illness which gives me something nasty and soul-sapping called "suicide ideation" about 2% of the population on North America has this illness and a sizeable chunk- screwed-up sleep cycle, pardon my poor vocabulary and digressions, segues- a fair percentage DO commit The Big Chill- I loathe being my age, I hate everything about, After 60- the only "golden" aspect is dear, David Bowie's song, Golden Years- I have to have my "mug shot" health card for Canadian Medicare done tomorrow- in past seeing my homely face I HAVE swallowed handfuls of Valium- then I HEAR THIS EXTRAORDINARY MUSICIAN, THIS WISE MAN TALKING ABOUT MUSIC, PEOPLE, THEIR IDIOSYNCRASIES, PEACE, WAR, LOUSY PANDEMICS AND GENERAL, BLAH ZEITGEIST- MONEY- SEEMS TO ME A MUSICIAN ONCE WANTED TO TELL A STORY- THINK OF THE MEDIEVAL MINSTRELS, TRAVELING AROUND KEEPING HISTORY AND PUTTING IT TO MUSIC ON THE LUTE OR THE PIPES- folk musicians supported each other as did country apparently- my weakest musical era- the blues cats he speaks of are heroes of mine- "little things meant so much" - at 80 he's SO FULL OF ZEST, WAXES LYRICAL ON LIFE, MUSIC, UPS AND DOWNS- DEATH! IS THE LAST THING ON HIS MIND! I am not musical but damn when I feel like crap MUSIC IS HERE! He couldn't play but he knew he was "home" he had a calling- BLESS ALL MUSICIANS, EVEN RAP MUSICIANS WHO OUTTA STOP KILLING EACH OTHER-and Stingbean, invented drop-crotch pants! Check him out. Thanks for posting. I'm so tired of being up all night, lonely- thank the universe for guys like this, for music! Namaste from Canada

I opened up for this guy back in the 80's and this is just the TIP OF THE ICE BURG of how cool he is!! My most favorite memory from a musicians point of view...DELBERT you're still the best brother!!
I attended two of his cruises as a band member with Jimmy Hall from Wet Willie. I did not approach Delbert when I saw him on the ship because he always had a lot of people that wanted his time. He saw me passing by and called me over to tell me I did a great job in the band, and even made the remark that I was a hell of a singer. Very generous, very thoughtful, and very badass is that man.
I saw Delbert many years ago at Mohegan Sun's Wolf Den. I had a couple of his albums and went to see him. There he was in a smaller but very nice venue in the middle of the casino, playing with a free admission. For not charging a ticket or door charge, it was a hell of a show. No cheap production. He had about a 10 piece band with a full horn section.
We got hip to Delbert's music in the 70's. We lived in Houston and he played the small venues around town about once a year. We bought the records and went to every show we could get to. He even played at the opening of a new toll road where he played at a toll booth! His style and music hit me like an arrow to the heart. It left us happy, glad we'd seen him, uplifted about life. We shared it with as many friends and family as we could. I've always said that if you're not having a good time at a Delbert show, it's coz you've passed out. There's never been anything like it. We're blessed to have seen him, to have heard the songs, and to have shared him with others. God Bless Delbert.
Delbert is one of the best of the best as far as I am concerned. He defentily bared his soul. He is not onley unbelievably talented he is the most hounest man, and he doesn't hold back. I am an old guy in a new world. God bless you sir. You are a kindred spirt .
I was born & raised in north Louisiana. I was a disc jockey at two radio stations when I was around 20 yrs old. The station received promo music all the time from artists for airplay. I was a rebel and played music that was not approved by the program director. Funny how my show was the most popular one! I first heard of Delbert with his song “Victim of Life’s Circumstances. I’d play that song & others. I’ve been buying Delbert’s music ever since. I moved to Texas in 1977. Delbert is a Texas treasure!
I took my future wife to see Delbert at AmeriStar casino in Vicksburg, Ms. After the show, he was signing autographs. I left her to buy a t-shirt for him to sign. There was a long t-shirt line and when I returned she had already gotten him to sign her bra. I think she really liked him! Best woman and best rock-a-billy on the planet!!!
You also need to mention how giving he is to his fans and friends. I didn’t know who Delbert McClinton was until 1989 when I heard the song I’m With You and I did everything I could to find out who he was and to see him in person. I wanted to meet him. So I succeeded and couldn’t get enough of him. His music makes you forget all you problems and just be there with him and enjoy yourself and dance. He is the best at what he does. I love that he has won the Grammies because that means his peers recognizes how talented he is and is the best.
Bypass surgery like all surgeries is scary. Something can always go wrong. A heart surgeon said to me, "I am going to attempt a triple bypass on your wife". (Always a risk). To have made it through heart surgery alone is such a thing to be thankful for. When I played in cover bands I always loved playing, "Every Time I Roll The Dice". What a cool song, it gets you Rockin' and Rollin' twice at the intro. (Very ingenious).
Sir Delbert. Thanks for all the years your voice & team of elite professional musicians graced the walls, dance floors in Louisville’s Butcher Town Pub & every time left all of us hometown villains to growing, giving, going & options in the way we choose to live life on life’s terms. All the best and a bow to Delbert McClinton.
I have been a fan for 41years , my first experience with Delbert and his Music took place in July 1979 at the “Hot Tin Roof “ on Martha’s Vineyard! Delbert’s music has been a Soul connection for many years , and it’s what I turned to on many of life’s up and downs ! Thanks you Delbert love you for all the music and the times you and I shared some conversation in the HTR dressing room ! Great memories. Be well each day ,.
Dilbert mcclayton, you're the best love you're music. Listen to It all the time. I know all your songs. One of My favorites is the weather man Leap of faith
Thank you both for your time and the interview. I met Mr. Delbert in the 90's. He couldn't have been nicer. He even signed my CDs & cassette tape, which I had brought. You see, I had just lost my dad to cancer, and I was feeling pretty low. My best friend knew how much I liked his music. Well, she read he was coming to town and was going to play in a local area bar. She bought tickets, paid for the taxi, and took me to see him perform with his band. She also paid for the beer. She was determined to help get me out my grief-stricken funk. Even if it was for one night. Although I cried, it worked. (My dad could play a pretty mean harmonica too!) I will always remember this concert with great fondness. Thanks again! btw, Red Beer is pretty darn tasty!
Saw Delbert in 2017 or 18 in Lexington ky. Delbert and the band rocked it! About half way through the show, he wanted to feature players in the band. Delbert introduced the guys and walked off the stage. But he hung out stage left and rocked with the band, as hard as anyone in the audience. Delbert was all about the show
Love Delbert. I'm so honored to have seen him live in Philadelphia when he toured to support of the album "Never Been Rocked Enough", which is a great album from front to back.
Thanks for this amazing conversation with Mr McClinton. Someday when we've all moved on to the next dimensions, this interview will be looked on as the definitive resource for everything about this gentleman's life.
This is absolutely priceless. Thank you so much for preparing, conducting. recording and sharing this. I did not know that Delbert was another Lubbock boy. So many greats came from there. Way more than you would expect from such a place.
I've only seen Mr. McClinton perform once, many years ago, by accident. He was the opening act for Willie Nelson, in a very unusual venue. It was back in 1981, on assignment for Newsweek magazine. I went to the state penitentiary in Jefferson City, Missouri, to cover a show for the inmates. Delbert McClinton was a very pleasant surprise. Glad I came prepared and taped it.
No. Haven't heard it myself in decades. Thought of getting it digitalized and mixed up ... still have the TCD-5M deck. Delbert did a set, and Willie did one. The photos were never published.
@@woodystemms3799 Would love to see and listen to them if and when you ever decide . I imagine Delbert and Willie wouldn't mind seeing them too ! Thanks very much for your reply .
Don't say you regret not seeing him, he's NOT DEAD ! He lives in Nashville and he maybe retired but retired only means he's not on the road anymore . I can't speak for him but with a voice like that I can't see him hiding it away from a " MIKE " too long !!
I truly love that man! I'm so glad I got to see him play. He doesn't even have to perform or anything, he just sings, like he has well over 10,000 hours doing it, well over. Just very natural and unpretentious. The man has 10 PhDs in Life.
Check out Delbert and his band doing Blues as Blues Can Get in Atlanta in 2016. The video is on RUclips. The horns and James Pennebaker’s guitar...man they are killer. Delbert and his band are something special.
Excellent interview. Thank you! One of the best singers and lyricists out there. Met him on his "Never been Rocked Enough" tour. Got an autographed CD and a pic with him. Nicest guy ever. You've still got a huge fan base out here Delbert!
Love Delbert. I’m seen him so many times I know his show. I know Kevin from Brian Setzer, Bob Brit is a friend through Leon Russell days and Etta from Louisville. My wife likes music but she loves Delbert. She gets up and dance
This is so great. We discovered Delbert in the 70's in Washington DC at the Childe Harold. Followed him forever, favorite venue The Birchmere in Arlington VA. I got a hug from him.
The podcast was recorded 3 years ago - happy to have found it, and what a joy to listen to Dilbert's story. I found you when I was 16 in 1970. Loved your music and still can't figure out why you were never a big star....you've played with everyone that matters, everyone knows who you are in the industry etc. But happy your still making records. Be well Dilbert - keep on keepen' on. You are a treasure to many. HAHAHHAHA you just said keep on keepin' on on the show HAHAHAHHAHA seriously i had that in my head and typed it here 30 seconds before you said it. Blow my mind. as it should be. Cheers -
Thanks so much for this. I've been a huge fan of Delbert's since seeing him as regular guest when in town on the Imus show. Any time I'm down I put on Delbert and the next thing I know I'm dancing. Great interview!
Everytime I roll The dice was what turned me on to Delbert I swore to me self I coul play the best blues with him and Walter Trout. you give him a big hug for me and damn you do a great Interview. first time I saw you you had Jeff CARLISI. I met him in Orange Park Florida where I met Gary Rossington.. Good Stuff
Delbert McClinton is one of my all time favorite singer/songwriter. I had the privilege of being in a road band and opening for Delbert at the wild horse saloon in Nashville in 1996. Being a native Texan growing up around Lubbock, I knew about Delbert and his music. To get that opportunity was a big deal for me. We were told to not talk to him by management and I get that during pre-show time . I was too intimidated anyways and star struck to have said anything anyways. His band came out and kicked some ass with Reece Wynans on B3 and Jonelle Mosser singing backup...the horn section! Damn, I still get chills thinking about how good that was....Delbert sang and played his ass off! Never Been Rocked Enough is still one of my desert island albums....If you don't have it, you need to get it! Getting to do that show has been a highlight in my music life. Texas is full of music legends and Delbert is right up there at the top!
Love Delbert since the first time I heard him on the Imus in the Morning Show. Great performer and great songs. Thank you for posting this interview. Just subscribed.
so loved this interview and Delbert! Have dug your podcast since 2018. I was in a band in 1981 and we covered 3 of Delbert’s songs❤ On a side note, I saw Freddie King live three times…in Calgary Alberta! He was my number 1. And when I heard Gatemouth live and had the chance to meet him a few times, it was like meeting. Count Basie. Gate was such an amazing multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and arranger.
I had the same thing happen to me in Leonard's Dept Store( turned into Dillard's)... at water fountain and restrooms...poor Christian Mother struggled to answer me,cause she knew it was so wrong.. Man,I luv Delbert....
Appreciate, fan since the 70ies from Switzerland, saw him once in Baden, disappointing, but he won't do the gig anyway. Great music to enjoy 'til today
Thanks. Loved the interview. It's the first time Ive sat though an interview this long and made it to the end. This was a no BS zone for 2hrs.Thank you and Delbert once again. Im in the same biz as Mr. Mc Clinton and I appreciate his logic. Out side the box should be his middle name. Very entertaining and EDUCATIONAL.
Second time I've listened to this here on Y/T. Love Delbert. His cadence & rhythmic delivery makes him soulful w/o being a screamer or blues shouter. That's just for starters.
So blessed to have Dave Milsap living here on the Mt in Ruidoso, NM. He does an acoustic Happy Hr set every Friday for the last 8 years Fantastic person and amazing guitarist. Was lead guitarist during the same ERA with guitarist Stephen Bruton Lottsa Delbert Tour stories
VERY interesting video. My dear friend and former fellow bandmember Gary Nicholson reminded me of Delbert's great music and our gigs at the Ft Worth Cellar. Thanks to both of you for the great memories.. TBoone Fisher
My Uncle Donny Stevens played with Delbert and was a member of the Straight Jackets for Many Years ….Donny played lead guitar when Delbert and Bruce Channel recorded “Hey Baby”
Delbert is my all time favorite, since before i meet him at geenhill shell gas station 1992, jumping his old Cadillac off , trade off was his signature
I owned a printing company and was Delberts Printer for a lot of years. In 2000 when "One of the fortunate few" came out there were these big bus bench signs at all the bus stops around Music Row. I wanted one, but didn't want to go out and steel one without Delberts permission. I was delivering the fan club newsletter at his home, and asked him if I could swipe one when it was time to change the sign, he said yeah go ahead, just wait till the life of the album is over. Three months later I was back at his home delivering another newsletter with a 3 x 8 foot long bus bench sign in the back of my truck, hoping Delbert would autograph it for me. When he raised his garage door he had one of the signs hanging on his wall too. He asked me how i got mine, and I told him I just tried to look official as I unscrewed it from the bench. He said yeah, I don't look very official, and didn't want to get caught steeling my own sign so I had a Nashville cop buddy of mine swipe it for me. My sign still hangs in my music room. Thanks Delbert, been a fan since the Mother Blues days back in Dallas.
Sad but I just googled "2 more bottles of wine" and I came up with Song by "Emmylou Harris"- it's a shame. I liked Emmylou Harris until now. Best wishes Delbert - you are an inspiration to us all Sir
Enjoyed hearing Delbert's stories... I used to have and office in Ft Worth next to Major Tom Smith. This was in the late 80s. Tom use to tell me stories how he was close friends to Elvis. He told me he was in contact with Elvis and Elvis had been in hiding since his death. Interesting guy for sure.
Here’s the deal: I knew Delbert went through his triple bi-pass. So Christmas Eve of 2020 I went to see the CV Thoracic Surgeon after test showed my entire heart was barely able to pump! On December 28th I had a triple bi-pass and got my little heart pillow! Healed up great! Got the scar at the top of my left calf where they cut out my veins to use in the bi-pass. Today I’m kicking ass and taking names at 70 years of age! Charlie Goodnight and Oliver Loving blazed out the famous “Goodnight-Loving” Trail and are the true life characters that served as the models for captains “McCray and Call” of the Pulitzer Prize winning book “Lonesome Dove” by Larry McMurtry.
I'm 68 and I first heard Delbert's voice from the radio in 1980 or 81' when " GIVEN' IT UP FOR YOUR LOVE " hit the airwaves. I was working in a commercial food distribution warehouse in Greenville, South Carolina and the 10th caller that day when that record was played would win $100 and yes, .... that was me ! I just knew by the soulful sound of that man's voice that he must have been a black man , but I found out he was white which really confused me because I couldn't understand how that was possible ! Since then I have seen Delbert McClinton more times than I can imagine, I lost count years ago. I have had the honor to speak with him and of course get selfies and all that but I can't think of another person who's voice has resonated so deep and pure in my mind as his has with me. I understand he's recently retired and good for him, he has paid his dues many times over. Love you man, rest and enjoy your life with Wendy and all you have worked for and enjoy life, period. Oh, and thank you for all the good times that your recording's will continue to bring. 😅
Bruce Channell’s last name is pronounced (Sha-Nell) like the perfume Chanel #5 My kids were in Matching Band in high school and at every single home football game the band played “Hey Baby” Del’s harmonica part made that song what it was! I’ve of the best harmonica pieces ever recorded!
I thought Delbert was an amazing interview and I appreciated his honesty at so many of the questions. Additionally I found his wife to be the person that saved Delbert!@@EveryoneLovesGuitar

Wow that sounds like a cool experience - Thank you for listening @woodystemms3799! 🎉🔥😇
Anywhere I can see or hear your recording ?
No. Haven't heard it myself in decades. Thought of getting it digitalized and mixed up ... still have the TCD-5M deck. Delbert did a set, and Willie did one. The photos were never published.

Would love to see and listen to them if and when you ever decide . I imagine Delbert and Willie wouldn't mind seeing them too ! Thanks very much for your reply .
I Love Delbert and have for a Long Time 😊😊☺️ My all time favorite 😉☺️❤️ I sure miss seeing him 🙂 !!!!!
I've Got Dreams To Remember..................D MC Absolutely incredible!!!
I regret never seeing him live. A true American treasure. I’ve been a fan for years. Great interview!
Glad you enjoyed the interview Randy Siler, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
Seen him live. Worth it. Make it happen. Ain't no additional Delberts.
Great interview. I really enjoyed it. Love Delbert's story tellin' and country wisdom.
Glad you enjoyed the interview @KarlCurtisZeuch, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !

Cheers -

Glad you enjoyed the interview @kentowens2179, and thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
Very cool, thanks for sharing that, @fiddlefolk 🙌🏻 💥 🎉
Love Delbert since the first time I heard him on the Imus in the Morning Show. Great performer and great songs. Thank you for posting this interview. Just subscribed.
Glad you enjoyed the interview @Doowopsid, and thanks for listening & subscribing 💥 🎶 🎸 ! And WOW, haven't heard "Imus in the Morning" in YEARS!
so loved this interview and Delbert! Have dug your podcast since 2018.
I was in a band in 1981 and we covered 3 of Delbert’s songs❤
On a side note, I saw Freddie King live three times…in Calgary Alberta! He was my number 1. And when I heard Gatemouth live and had the chance to meet him a few times, it was like meeting. Count Basie. Gate was such an amazing multi-instrumentalist, bandleader and arranger.
Wow, thanks for your kind words @dancher7640 and glad you enjoyed this 👍🏻🎸♫ Appreciate you listening to the show! Freddy King 🙌🏻
I had the same thing happen to me in Leonard's Dept Store( turned into Dillard's)... at water fountain and restrooms...poor Christian Mother struggled to answer me,cause she knew it was so wrong..
Man,I luv Delbert....

Thanks for your kind words @RonnieMinh and glad you enjoyed this 👍🏻🎸♫
I just caught this.....Thanks, so much I can relate with Delbert's life......"Realized I don't know anything" ....
Second time I've listened to this here on Y/T. Love Delbert. His cadence & rhythmic delivery makes him soulful w/o being a screamer or blues shouter. That's just for starters.
Thank you for listening @davida.gorton7175! 🎉🔥😇
So blessed to have Dave Milsap living here on the Mt in Ruidoso, NM.

Come back to Gruene Hall Delbert!!!!
Respect.
Haha, great story man - Thank you for listening JimmyClyde! 🎉🔥😇
PR-BEACHBOY: May 26th, 2015, I had a quintuple bypass on a heart that was 98% blocked.
Good luck with your recovery, and CHANGE YOUR DIET !!!
Texas Legend
Yes sir!
Delbert is the Best ☺️❤️
Right on @Chet_Brinkley, awesome story, and thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻

Bruce Channell’s last name is pronounced (Sha-Nell) like the perfume Chanel #5
My kids were in Matching Band in high school and at every single home football game the band played “Hey Baby”
