    Ben already has the spotter tool and the basic sheet metalworking skills, with a bit more time/practice he could've salvaged that quarter panel.
    Matching that Matte White actually is pretty simple. Most important part is obviously getting the white undertone as close as possible. Then you just use the clearcoat that you would normally use and add a matting agent. I was nervous first time I did it but then quickly realized that you can't really mess it up unless you sag or run the clear.
    Also some suggested repainting the whole car a different color... That would be a TON of work to do it right, because then you'd have to paint the insides of the doors, underside of trunk lid, underside of the hood and also get the door jams, trunk area and engine bay repainted (last one would require engine to be pulled). Much easier and cheaper to just color match the replacement panel...
    P.S. that spotter tool is a must for sheet metal work the only downside is it is pretty expensive... However, just about anyone can easily build one out of some microwave transformers. I built mine few years ago for dirt cheap. I did a very detailed video on that build on my channel. If anyone is interested check it out and build yourself one, you'll be glad you did 😉

    • @fix206
      @fix206 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@bluehatch11 The voltage is 120 because the microwaves were on 120 and that makes the transformers requiring 120. However if you are using 220 in your country then build the tool the same exact way as I showed it and run it on 220... Good luck !

    That quarter panel could possibly have been saved using lead on the panel gap to the bumper and the area around the tail light. Bondo will definately crack in those areas. We used lead a lot back in the day. But now it’s forbidden, at least here in germany, so the skills are lost. Still, doing so and saving the panel would have left the inside somewhat mangled up, which you don’t want on such an expensive, almost new car. So renewing the panel is justified. Oh and yes the new quarter is glued and rivited in - except for the cut at the C-pillar. BMW has gone back to wealding on that cut due to quality issues. By the way, I’m the guy who writes the repair manuals for BMW, here in munich/germany. Cheers

      Yes that's true. But the temperature window of the new lead free solder is much smaller. So much so, that it was found to be non useable for the technicians. At least that's what the department for repair and maintenance at BMW concluded. I tried it too, couldn't handle it, although I did it a lot in my work shop days. (using the old leaded solder) I actually liked working with lead - quite simple once you've got the hang of it.
