Having lived here 11yrs and prior to that travelled here on and off for 5 years. Thailand is massively more expensive now than 15 years ago. 1. The Thai baht has stayed incredibly strong compare to the drop in power of the pound sterling. 2. Prices go up in Thailand in a non linear way (suddenly massage everywhere went from 150 baht to 200baht to 250baht - massive increases in % much higher than inflation or living cost increases). This goes the same for restaurants etc. 3. The price of beer is pretty high (compared to most other Asian countries). Sure u can get a beer for 50 baht still in some simple places but usually in nicer bars etc you are paying 80 to 120 baht (which is coming close to the price of a pint in england!!) . In comparison, beer in Cambodia is 50cents to $1 (15 to 30 baht). Laos is $1 (30baht) . Vietnam can be as low as 10cents for the street bia Hoi places.... So thailand has risen far above surrounding countries in terms of cost (apart from Malaysia). It might be time to look at Cambodia and Vietnam for living... Even places in eastern Europe such as Bulgaria are cheaper to live than Thailand now. Still Thailand is cheap compared to UK. But not cheap cheap as it used to be...

    "Get thee to Warrarot!"
Advice my friend gave me upon arrival in Chiang Mai. And it was good advice because Warrarot has everything.
As for inflation, my rent went up by $300 each month in America. I was paying $950. That's a 30+% increase.
Good news is Thailand is still reasonable by WESTERN standards. I could still easily live on what I paid for rent alone, were I still living in CM. And the more familiar you are with Chiang Mai (or any other location), the easier it is to save money because you know where to find things and live like a local.

Am currently in Mexico and was thinking the exact same thing.. am from Canada and you can still live quite cheaply in Mexico, however if you go out to a bar/restaurant, especially a gentrified one, prices really aren’t that far off from North America. A little cheaper but not by much.

  • @Ulbre
    @Ulbre 2 года назад +25

I have resided in CM for 16 years, 15 km from town.
We get by on around USD1200/month for family of 4. Okay, we don't have rent to pay but I am paying around THB10K per month in school fees.
I'd say overall the cost of living has gone up around 10% over the last year.
I also find that the Worawat market is quite overpriced compared to other local markets (although you may visit twenty of these local markets and still not find a lot of the product available at Worawat).
I bought quite a bit of gold 20 years ago @6000 baht/baht for wedding dowry. My wife still has all that, but a pity I didn't buy a whole lot more!!!!!

That also means that you need to be able to speak some Thai, do you can buy cheaper foods/vegs from the local market. You really just have to survive first while ur in the states. Inflation in the UK is fast approaching 10% and expecting to hit 11% by the end of the year. My home costs me £1600 a month to run and that's not including the £100 rent rise next month. I've switched of my gas and don't put a light on until its very dark and I haven't switched my TV on for 2 months, yet my bill last month was still £130. I stopped eating out because even a burger can cost close to £10, besides I sold my car when gas prices hit $10 a gallon. So as you can see, prices are going up all over the world, it just depends on where you are. I'm in Spain now for 3 months and then I'm off to Thailand August where I have found a 1 bed condo for £240 a month, I like thai food, rather than western, I don't drink or smoke and will do anything to get away from the UK government ... Then if I can survive on $1300 a month, then happy days.

In the U.S., COVID relief benefits totaled over 7 trillion dollars. That was stimulus money given to everyone earning less than $100,000 a year, then was enhanced unemployment that was over $1000 a week for up to 2 years, businesses could get $25,000 per employee just for keeping them employed. Even businesses that suffered no losses could collect tens of millions of dollars. Thus we have inflation. Way, way too much money dumped on the economy. I spent two months in Thailand in 2005, when the exchange rate was £1=70B, and two months in 2019, when the rate was £1=40B. Naturally, this affected my perception of the (increased) cost of living in Thailand. As I understand it, the value of the Baht has been artificially manipulated for many years to enable the Thai elite to increase their foreign property portfolios. I found the cost of accommodation to be - relatively - reasonable, compared to Europe. Likewise the food costs, if you eat street food, or at no-frills restaurants. Though, if you want to chew on a decent steak, for instance, it is not cheap. Let me elaborate: if you want to live well (my definition of 'well', which is totally subjective) in Thailand, expect to be forking out at least £2K per month, minimum.

The THB was pegged at 20 to the USD from 1956 to the mid 80’s. Due to the strong US economy it was then reset to 25 & stayed there till the 1997 SE Asia crash. Thailand is an exporting Country & as the USD is the still the worlds reserve currency & everything from gold to oil is priced in it the Bank Of Thailand like every other Central Bank has levers it can pull like interest rates does this to try keep the THB between 30 & 35. In 2007 it was around 33 to the THB & it is around that today & pretty much been in the 30 to 35 range in the years in between. Also in 2007 the £ was USD 2 & that was why we was getting around 66 then. Then came the 2008 western bank bust with quarantine easing i.e. printing money & the £ along with a lot of other western currencies lost value. If the £ was still USD 2 today like it was in 2007 we would be getting around 66 but it is down to USD 1.22 & we getting around 42. So it really has nothing to do with the strength of the THB & a lot to do with the weakness of the £.

If you have a steady budget of $800 a month, you're good my Man.
Btw, lodging has absolutely not increased in prices and won't do so, as the demand will never exceed the offer here, plus the competition has never been tighter than it is now (logical, there are less people than before, in both tourists and expats).
Just make sure you also have a minimum of savings for emergencies, unexpected expenses AND to set you up right from the jump with all the things you're gonna need to start your life there (not to be included in a monthly budget, cause not regular expenses and kinda one time ones), like the purchase of a scooter for example (if you rent one, then it will be part of your monthly budget instead).
Make also sure you take all the time necessary to find the right place to stay (for YOU), find one for good and think long term for that matter. This is not only the biggest expense in your monthly budget but also the most important decision you will make that will affect you (positively or negatively) on an everyday basis. If you're good in your place, you're good in your head, you're good in your life (CRUCIAL).
Rent yourself a scooter asap and go around finding your place (can be find, signed and moved to the same day), don't use agencies as they take a huge commission on the monthly rent they will offer you (compared to what you'd pay the landlord without them in the deal).
4 to 6 months there will teach you everything you need to know in terms of budget optimisation options concerning YOUR SITUATION AND LIFESTYLE.
If you need any advice, I'm there.
      Take care.

Being a commodity trader, I was very curious about your statement about the price of gold. It turns out over the last five years, gold is up from $1200 to $1800 an ounce, while the Baht has been about even over the past five years. So your example was correct but both the dollar and the Baht have fallen the same amount against the baht over the last five years. Inflationary pressures around the world stem from far more than just QE. Supply shocks (lock downs, etc) are real, and they very much effect prices. The more pressing reality for many nations like Thailand is the global dollar (U.S) shortage. Essentially what is going on is most countries are spending more US dollars via imports than they take in through exports; as the dollar is used for nearly 70% of all international trade settlements this creates issues… some of those are inflationary pressures, and a rising US dollar. This cycle also pushes the Baht (and other currencies) down. It’s going to get rough for a little bit, especially for middle income nations.

The only price rise I can see is fuel, from 26baht to 40+ baht per litre so still cheap compared to rip-off Britain at £1,70+ per litre

Your lucky your not in the USA. Inflation and rent prices are incredible. Thailand is still much better to live if your lucky enough to have remote work.

Is it more expensive in general or just more expensive in the "safe zones" that have a lot of English speakers? Because In general those areas more expensive. That is why when living in another county one should learn the language and stop being entitled.

But this is the same everywhere and when I use to visit Thailand 20 years ago rent was roughly the same food was but 80 73 to the £ then 35 or 43 to the £ it’s got lots to do with the exchange rate. Rent is still cheap and you can get food thai local food still quiet reasonable prices Bret . ITs a lovely market the Gold is a good investment I remember 25 thai baht for a phadthai or noodle soup and you got 73 to the £ 😂 the good days i think now £1200 is ok 👍 a single man even retired
