Because diamond painting is a fairly new craft, no one can predict exactly how these sealing products and diamond painting adhesives will react over time, but I will continue to update you! For now, this process works well for me and has held up very well with no change in color or texture.

I would love to see an update with how those sealed canvasses are holding up with this method, or any other methods since it’s been a few years. Thinking of doing some sealing and I’m so nervous! This video was super helpful, thanks!
So far I'm relieved to report that there are no issues. They still look as good as the day I finished them. I should do an update video one of these days.
Thank you for this, I am a complete novice and my sister who has been doing these a little bit longer told me to seal them and what to use but it went all dull and lost the sparkle! I was very disappointed so I thought I would come on RUclips and see what others were doing and that is when I found you. I never once thought of washing the top of my diamonds after sealing them and they look fabulous so thank you very much for this life saver x

It's so interesting watching different methods between different people. I've watched videos where some pour cut mod podge on to saturate. My first thought was bubbles, too much wasted product, yada yada... But they say it works. The hair dryer and toothbrush idea is great. I always have a stash of tape lint rollers on hand. Those are helpful too.

I tried this after I watched your other video. It did work. On the one I am working on right now it is a square and the drills keep popping mostly because it is a nice tight fit. I put it on and didn't wipe it off because I would have wiped drills away. I only did one third so far because I had to do something to stop the drills from popping all the time. Thanks for all of your video's! :)

Tiny Worlds of Wonder will do! Just ordered some from Amazon. Lol I had done a similar method of wiping the surface off when I sealed some smaller items with the Aqua glue, that were Christmas presents, and it worked really well. Most of the sparkle was retained. :)

Thanks for doing this. I watched Studio Sam's video also. I wish I had watched yours before I sealed mine!!!!! I used the Deco Art Triple Thick Brilliant Gloss. After watching your video, I'm afraid I might have out it on too thick. Noticed this morning that some of the shine is gone off the drills. Will know better the next time I try and seal my diamond paintings. Just starting out on my fun new 5 Diamond journey.

I have one that sealed with a similar product without wiping off, and it still has a nice shine and still brings me a lot of joy. Thank you for this video! I've been looking for a video about how to cure the painting I made for my Dad. The painting is beautiful but it's from ali express so the quality isn't great but I have to cure it because I need to send it in the mail to him. @@tinyworldsofwonder okay so after you seal diamond paintings. The clear plastic that lays on it. Do you put that back on. The diamond painting after sealing it.
I use the same sealant and brush and they really work wonders. I do not use the damp cloth method I just use the mod podge and brush as she did. I haven't noticed a huge difference with the sparkle of the drills. I think they look the same and I have a great sparkle after sealing. Make sure you don't use a lot of product and I use the blow drying method to get rid of air bubbles. Before I apply the mod podge I put hangers (with adjustable hooks and clips) onto the area of the canvas I'll hang it from then seal. I hang it on my shower rod for at least 24 hours. Once it's hung I also put the same type of hangers on the bottom to create tension so it stays flat. I've not had a problem so far and I've done this quite a few times.

Lovecaster My pleasure! Yes, I have now! It seems to work just as well. How it interacts with the adhesive over time is something we can’t predict, but I haven’t had any issues so far.
I was using mod podge too but I never wipe off the excess, This is a great tip! I make it more sparkling then leaving all the mod podge over the drills!

This is a wonderful video!!! Question :) I am planning on sealing and framing a diamond painting with a painters frame (stretched canvas). I am wondering (since the sealing by changes the texture of the painting), should I seal after I have stretched the canvas into a frame? Or should I seal on the flat canvas and then frame with stretched canvas? Thanks for the help!! 😁
Hi, Ana! :) If you plan to stretch a section with drills around the sides of your frame, I would wait to seal until afterwards. The Mod Podge makes the canvas very stiff in my experience even though it still sparkles like crazy. :)

What I discovered which is better than a hair dryer for the bubbles... a can for air duster aka compressed air usually used to clean electronics. Is small quick bursts. Worked for me with polycylic.

Thank you for sharing your method, I was lost on which product to use since all of them seemed to kill the shine in most of others' videos. Your method seems promising and I'll be trying it for my next finished product. I just had a question: is it really necessary to seal the painting if you're going to frame it and it has a plastic or glass in the front of it ? I wanted to frame it in a poster/picture frames, but I don't know if the diamonds will pop out despite having that plastic or glass to press the painting to. I'm really new to diamond painting so I don't know much about sealing or framing;;
Christina Hi, Christina!! I am glad this was helpful. 😀 I usually don’t seal pieces framed behind glass or thick, inflexible plexi, but for bare drills and flexible plexi I do. I also seal if I’m having any doubts about the quality of my adhesive. I hope that helps! 😀

Thanks so much for this excellent video Jessica, I can't wait to give this a go. I know this sealant is meant to be water resistant, but I'm wondering if rather than wiping with a damp cloth during application, if I would get the same result if polishing firmly with a textured cloth (or chamonix leather) after it has completely dried 🤔 That would also remove any mess or worry about bubbles... If I am doing a large canvas how large of an area should I put Mod Podge on before I start wiping? Do I need to start wiping within a certain amount of time? Could I put Mod Podge on the whole canvas then wipe or will it dry too much?
I used theMod Podge super gloss and did not wipe it off. It looks great and no loss of sparkle. No wiping needed

I have not tried that. I did think about testing it, but it wasn't available in my local stores. :)
How would you recommend sealing a partial drill? My grandmother completed one before she past that I want to preserve it as an heirloom. Thanks so much
Aw, how lovely, Brittany! None of these products have been around long enough to know if they're truly archival, so I would hesitate to recommend something only to turn out that in 20 years it isn't truly archival quality. I might recommend monitoring the original piece over time to see how it holds up, and then perhaps revisit? I just don't want to recommend anything to to you and then have it yellow/change the adhesive, etc. as the years go by. My canvases that are sealed this way look great 3-4 years later, but it's difficult to know in the very long term. ❤ Much love regarding your grandma.
Can we use gesso? Its usually used as primer for acrylic but i dont know if i can use it as sealing the diamond painting since i dont have mod podge
I haven't tried clear gesso, although I do own some. I fear that it would take away a lot of sparkle since it is designed to add texture to surfaces. If you try it, let me know though!! :)
I can't buy the Mod Podge Super gloss anywhere. After clicking on your link, I tried googling it, but it's all out of stock. I guess everyone is watching your show and have become addicted to diamond painting. In Australia where I live, they're selling the mod podge brush for $53. I can't afford that. Will a paint brush or a foam brush from the cheap discount stores do a good enough job?
Dang, Ambience! That is so frustrating! I am having the same issue with price gouging and shortages with some things I need for work. :( All the manufacturing in China is basically at a standstill, and all the ports are so backed up. :( When the world goes back to normal, I think a good quality regular brush that doesn't shed hair would work just fine. A foam brush might create more bubbles than you want, but I think a regular paint brush would work really well. Wishing you the best of luck!

Hi, Susan! It may not have quite as much reflectiveness around the outside edges of the drills, but beyond that I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. :)

Hello! I just tested out using the plain gloss mod podge, the results were that it worked and stuck the drills together but it lost some of it sparkle. Hope this helps!

Would using a sponge brush be ok or do you think the mod podge brush is better? I just finished my first diamond painting and I want to seal it because the gems have been sliding a little bit.
Rebecca Whaley I would advise using a brush that creates minimal bubbles, so a bristled brush probably works best. 😀

I have been doing diamond paintings for about 4 years now. Every one I have done, I have sealed. When I finish the picture, I check for cat hairs and remove them with tweezers. Next, I take a sponge brush and pour some Elmer's Clear School Glue. I get it at my local hobby store, Michael's. I start at one corner at the top with about 3 inch puddle of glue and spread it as far as it will go, and repeat this until I finish the picture. I lay the canvas flat somewhere my cat cannot get to it and let it dry overnight. The shine on the crystals is just fine. Clean the sponge with warm water and soap and let dry. Easy peasy. Enjoy your craft.

Hi there! This is very helpful. I have a question though: part of the reason I want to seal my painting is to keep the dust off it. I intend to frame it up without glass (so I don't lose any sparkle), so sealing the drills is one way to make the surface 'smooth' and less likely to collect dust. It will also help when I want to run over the painting with a cloth to wipe off any dust.
Does wiping off the sealant off the top of the drills make the surface more 'bumpy' and therefore more likely to collect dust?
Also, how much Mod Podge would I need for a 15" x 30" painting? Thanks very much!
Hi there! When I did this the texture felt similar to the unsealed canvas, but the gaps between the drills was filled in with sealer. 😀 From what I remember, I believe a 50 x 70 cm canvas used about half of one container. I hope that helps! 🥰

I'm pretty new to diamond painting, and am only just about to finish my first piece so I'm doing the research now on how best to mount one. I got three 40cmx80cm pieces that I want to hang up on an empty wall. So the issue is glass, or no glass? Would Plexi-glass work as well?
@@lachesis018 My pleasure! Nothing is quite as sparkly as bare diamonds, but I have mounted both with regular glass and “masterpiece” non-glare glass. The result is definitely better with the masterpiece glass even though it’s more expensive. If you’re doing matching pieces, clip framing with non-glare plexiglass might be a good option too. I’ve found over the last few years that I really prefer the look of framed pieces, but this is a little bit up to individual preference. 🥰 I also think the quality of the kit has a huge bearing on how I decide to frame and whether I seal. When I get kits from AliExpress, I’m much more likely to have quality issues that require sealing or mounting behind glass. I hope that helps! Good luck with your projects!
I do lots of small projects - like bookmarks, key chains, coasters, and ??? Do these projects need to be sealed? Also, if they do, what is the best method since they are usually partials? TIA for any guidance or advice.

Would this technique work on diamond art coasters ? Is it make it water proof.
I believe it would work as far as sealing goes, but I have never exposed the dried product to water. This is a great question and something I will have to research more before I can be confident giving advice. I would hate to ruin your project by guessing! 😅
I am ready to finish my project. It is based with DST which is lifting. The drills are attached, bit the tape is lifting off the canvass. I thought if I used my roller in small areas at a time and then applied your technique it might hold the tape down. Your thoughts please!!
Sorry so late to the party! Yikes - that STINKS!! I've never encountered that issue before. Maybe you could reattach the tape on the reverse side with liquid adhesive? That might work better than mod podge. It would have to be non-yellowing and be designed to grip to fabric - tricky. Maybe test Aleene's tacky glue on a small section? You might also be able to use rolls of DST and stick it back down to the fabric if it's coming off in large enough sections. That SUCKS! I'm so sorry!
Do you have any advice on what I can do to get the sparkle back to my diamonds.
I ended up using the mod podge gloss spray before seeing your video and now my painting looks dull.

Oh nooooo! I'm sorry to hear that. :( I am not aware of a way to remove Mod Podge sealer, but I will keep my ears open!
Might sound crazy... but what do you think would happen if you applied mod podge to the back of your artwork? Not on the surface of the diamonds but allow it to do it's work from behind?
I don't think that sounds crazy at all! I don't know if the Mod Podge would permeate the canvas from the back side or not, but it would be worth the experiment! :)
Is it normal, when you first apply the Mod Podge and then wipe off the surface of the diamonds, for the diamonds to look dull/less sparkly at first before it dries?
Hmmm, not really in my experience. Mine look more or less the same before and after. 😌
Will regular mod lodge work? The super gloss is sold out everywhere 😕😕
Shoot! :( I would think so, but I haven't tested that so can't say for absolute certain. I use the super gloss because of its shine, but regular Mod Podge does function as a sealer too. If you try it, let me know how it goes!
Here in South Africa is only Glosy Mod Podge wil it keep the shine????

Thank you for the video! The picture I did has a lot of blank canvas surrounding the diamond art picture. It's a rainbow tree with no background. What happens if the sealer gets on the canvas? Should I just not seal it?
I am not sure to be honest. 😀 I need to try this on a partial. Maybe that will be my next experiment!
You could create a barrier on the canvas without drills, using masking tape or painters tape, blutac or there is a special masking fluid used for painting. I would test it on a corner of the canvas first just to be sure, like where the legend/code is.
Or you can use a thinner paintbrush (stick with nylon/taklon bristles) as it'll be easier to control where you are putting sealant on & wipe up the sealant around the edges/off the plain canvas while it's still wet. Or I have seen recommendations for using a spray sealant on partial drills like yours. It doesn't hold anywhere near as well as brush on sealant though.
If it were me, I'd go with a smaller paintbrush, use some painters tape or masking tape to block off most of the blank canvas around the drills & have an extra damp cloth nearby just for quickly wiping up any sealant that gets in the wrong place
(Painters tape leaves little to no residue behind, I use it to stick my canvas to a board & never leaves any sticky bits behind so it would be fine to put right on you canvas)
How large a section to seal, would you recommend at one time? I have a 40 x 40 cm painting.
I work in sections of about 6x6 inches. :)
for the mod podge, is it okay if you just have the gloss instead of super gloss? if you don’t know, that’s completely fine!! :)
I am not positive what the difference would be, but I think it's unlikely it would make a huge difference in the end result. If you try it, let me know what you think! :)

If I seal the painting I have and put on a canvas would it be better to adhere it to the canvas first before sealing?
Judy McIntire I think so, yes. The canvas won’t be flexible at all after you seal. 😀

When you put the mod Podge on I could see it took alot of the shine away as you were applying it?
If you applied it without moving on to the second step (wiping off the drill surface with a damp cloth), then yes, it would. Once the full process is finished I can’t tell any difference between the sealed and unsealed canvas.
On a large canvas do you just do a small area at a time or the entire canvas
I do a small area at a time. :) I don't want the product to dry as I'm working. :)
I’m curious, have you tried this on round drill canvases? I’m wondering if the gloss makes the canvas too shiny between the round drills. I have cats and dogs and their fur sticks to the sticky gaps between the round drills and drives me crazy.
Madeira Brickwood Yes, I have! 😀 The product seems to cut down on some of the stickiness of the canvas between the drills. It isn’t totally eliminated, but it is minimized. I don’t think anyone knows exactly how the product will interact with the adhesive over time - that would be the one caveat. But I have had no problems so far. 😀

I'm going have to try it. I working on a painting now and i was sealing it and i let it dry and and i saw bubbles and I'm going to try the damp cloth when wiping the painting and reducing bubbles.
The Mod Podge really bubbles with water, but I just keep wiping until all the bubbles disappear. :)

Keri Ellson I am not sure, Keri. I haven’t tried that. I would say from my experimentation that wiping off the surface was somewhat less stiff than leaving all the product on the surface. If you do try it, let me know! 🥰

Oh, that's so sad, Sharon! I don't believe it's possible to remove sealant once it's cured. I have done the same thing, and I feel for you! There is so much hard work involved in these! :(
Hobby Lobby didn't have super gloss mod poge so I bought gloss. Will it work just as well without losing the sparkle?
Hi, Judy! I haven’t tried that formula, but I would think that wiping the tops of the drills off would mitigate the loss of sparkle. Let me know how it turns out!
I’m making diamond paintings for friends and fam for Christmas this year and I want to protect them I’m scared to try it lol but does this keep gems from falling off
Bailey, I can never make guarantees, but none of mine have lost gems (even unsealed) since I started diamond painting about 4 years ago. :) The ones I've sealed haven't yellowed or had any issues that I can tell. Because this is such a new craft, it's hard to know how exactly they'll hold up, but with a good quality kit, I think it's safe to say you'll get quite a bit of mileage out of them. :)
Hi Jessica, I sealed my canvas with Mod Podge Super gloss, but my canvas didn't really stiffen up. Do you think I just need another coat or layer of it? Thanks!
Hi, Angela! I think mine got stiff because of the product down between the drills. Is yours a round or a square? My round didn't get very stiff, but my square did. If you add another layer, I guess you would just have to be sure that the product has space to go down between the drills in a square - if the previous layer dried in such a way that this is prevented it may just sit on top of the drills. I did use a fairly heavy hand when applying. I hope that helps! :)
@@tinyworldsofwonder Thanks Jessica. It's a round canvas. I'm not sure if I went light or heavy handed. I just expected it to stiffen up and it's still very flexible. I'm going to frame it behind glass and see if it stays upright. I have two cats that shed a lot so I'm mostly trying to prevent it from getting covered in cat hair :D
@@angelafortunato3866 That might be why then. 🥰 The round canvas I sealed is still pretty flexible because there’s so much space between the drills. 😀
Great video, you are really such an excellent help! Can you use masking tape to mark off sections of the painting so you can tell where you are?
Thanks so much, Greta! :) I think there might be a few creative ways you could keep track of your sections. The only downside or challenge might be that Mod Podge has a pretty fast dry time, and so you wouldn't want to put anything on the drills that would cause the product to gather around the edges and leave a ridge when removed. :)

I usually use different objects in the canvas to kind of keep track of where I am. For example, I'll work up to the edge of a face or flower, then another section, etc. :)

Wow thank you for this! Just discovered your channel, and you've got a few tutorials I'm planning to check out. I'm about to start a 60cm x 80cm square drill and I was curious if you had any tips on how to use this technique on larger canvases? And if a sponge brush would work or if I should stick to the type of brush you used?
Hi there!! I have done a canvas that large with this method, and I definitely recommend a brush like the one I use here because it creates fewer bubbles. You may also want to have an extra container of mod podge on hand and a spare rag or two as this technique uses quite a lot of product and it would stink to run out! Eventually the rag gets pretty saturated also. 😀 Of course some depends on how heavy your application is. Wishing you the very best of luck with your canvas! Those big pieces are so much fun!!

How well does this work for AB drills? Sorry if I missed this in the video!
That is an outstanding question! I've only tried it once with special drills (on a notebook cover), and it worked exactly the same way. I was really careful to clean the product off the top of the drills thoroughly. I was nervous that the product or the water would disturb the AB coating, but it didn't seem to on that project. I would suggest doing a test run though for sure as all AB drills might not be created equal. :)
Interesting video I thought the point of using the modge podge extra gloss was because it left the drills lovely and glossy? But in your video u wipe off all the gloss so would it not just be better to use the standard modge podge
I think standard Mod Podge would work fine, but the area between the drills still shows the glossier appearance. I just happened to test the method out with this product. :)

Also. I did a free hand design on a gessoed art canvas. I painted it with acrylic paint. No diamond punctures etc... Just gems, gem tac® glue and a canvas.
I just destroyed 3 months of work. 😭 I used the wrong sealant. Do you think modge podge would work with what I am doing? My process is slightly different than yours.

I think I would test a small area before going all-in on a project like that, but it does sound promising! The acrylic paint might dictate how wet the mixture can be. I haven't tried Mod Podge with Gem Tac, but maybe you could create a mini and test it out? I would love to hear how it goes if you do.

Hi, Lynn! If it’s already dry I don’t believe you can take it off. 😢 I like to wipe the surface of the drills with a damp cloth while the Mod Podge is still wet as I demo in this video to preserve the sparkle, but once it’s dry I believe it functions as a sealer. 😢
i am doing 2 angel diamond painting my mom loves angels because to me she is one she just turned 89 i got the orange bottle mod podge will that ruin it im still working on the paintings i started them in febuary i love doing them but they are crooked diamonds rows how can i fix that i have the rulers for round and square the square painting one is more crooked then the round one but the round painting the drills keep on falling off the round painting has the plastic cover and the square one has the paper cover but when i peel it back by section the paper gets stuck on the canvas im very new at this i didnt find out about there was such a thing until a couple months ago
Hi, Edith!! I haven’t tried regular Mod Podge for sealing, So I would definitely suggest a test run before you use it on any finished project. To straighten my drills, I sometimes use the edge of a credit card or plastic shopping card. When your paper sticks do you have it turned over upside down? 😢
