  • It’s time to knock the rust off. The elements can be rough on rifles, resulting in surface rust on Ol’ Betsy. Vortex’s own Ryan Muckenhirn gives us his tips to help get your rifle back into shape.

    Nice to see mark's much talk about WSM... "10 Min Talk"...A subject every 'new person' to shooting should know... Take care of your equipment... My I offer something... a ol' friend, who is a guide in BC and Yukon, suggested something to me for "dealing with rust or other blemishes"... when steel wool is too much and a cotton cloth is useless, something between steel wool and a cotton cloth... a wool sock. Perfect "grit" and I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. It is now Stand Equip in kits, along with a cotton cloth/Flannel-silicon cloth. Just one of many "hints" my friend has been nice enough to pass on. Thank You mark and Ryan

    I love these videos!!!! The 10 min talks have become a normal search. Any more ammunition talks in the future? What about the history of different rifles like you did the ammo last year.

    In case anyone was wondering when Ryan said bluing is basically controlled rusting, it's because rust has the chemical formula of Fe2O3, where as bluing, or megnetite, has the formula of Fe3O4. They're both iron-oxides, but one keeps spreading and the other forms a layer of protection for the steel underneath. Rust browning used to be popular but it's a long process, one can't just drop the rifle in a tank and let it sit like bluing. It doesn't require any real special equipment though, so it's something the average person could do -at home- _in a well ventilated garage_ and the end result looks great if done properly.

    Ok. Now you got me waiting on the 10 minutes on inner barrels rust. I just got a Russian M44 from a friend's father in law( for 100 bucks) and it has rust inside the barrel. I ran a cleaning rod and about 30 patches through and it still looks like it could use some more. The exterior is clean and number matching.

    I always clean surface rust off with mineral spirits or acetone BEFORE I use some oil and 0000 steel wool. Try to get as much rust off before buffing. A VERY light coat of paste wax rubbed onto the steel also works well and doesn’t get all over everything else for long term storage or wet environments on the exterior of the firearm. I keep a ziplock bag with lightly oiled cotton or microfiber cloth in my gun case when hunting and wipe my gun down as needled.

    I just spent 3 days in rain, sleet, and snow with my ol model 70. This was well needed 😂 REM oil helped it hold up well. Just quick wipe down when I got back and looks like new.

    I just had to do this quite literally a few days ago to a buddy of mines guns. He left them sitting in the closet way too damn long and now an expensive match barrel has got pitting on the outside inside looks ok but i just got my eyes. And nasty looking surface rust on an 870 that came right off with some old school rem oil and an old cotton sock.
    I like old socks you can get in there real good its like a cleaning glove haha.

    Don't forget about Parkerizing. It has been around since the days of the M1 Garand and is an extremely resistant coating to corrosion as well.

    Rust can also be removed from a blued gun using a pre 1982 solid copper penny and a generous amount of oil. It won't affect the blueing and works unbelievably well.
    I would never never touch any blued rifle with steel wool.

    Ballistol, Tri-Flow, and every once in a while in a pinch I'll use some Rem oil but that's all I've used since I was a little kid... All the fancy oils are probably really good and maybe even better but I'm kind of set in my ways at this point. LOL Great video as always keepem coming guys!!!

      I have always cleaned my bp guns with Ballistol. A few years ago, I converted all my firearms to it. Works great, non-toxic, and if the Germans thought it was great for trench warfare in WWI, that is good enough for me. Stinks though!

    My Weatherby Vanguard first light has a cerakote application from the factory and all bearing surfaces including bolt lugs and inside receiver have cerakote. I have to believe they knew what they were doing. No issues with the rifle.

    • @chevyon37s
      @chevyon37s 2 года назад

      You can be assured, that rifle was designed with the thickness of the cerakote in mind when the tolerances between parts were machined. They were speaking mostly to an after market application.

    • @iancurrie8844
      @iancurrie8844 2 года назад

      @@chevyon37s Seems to be the same size parts as my other Weatherby Vanguard S2s - actually the bolt goes into another rifle no problem and visa versa despite that one not having cerakote.... Actually testing now, a 1980s Vanguard (s1 if you will) bolt is also interchangeable (I know - don't fire but it fits fine). Clearly wasn't designed with certakote in mind.

    I have a used Walther PPK I am hesitant to send it to someone to get it re-blude. I was just thinking of selling it to purchase a new one. Is there any way to explain the process of rebluing, or to find a gunsmith that someone trust?

    A big recommendation for the folks out there buy a room dehumidifier and put it in the room your safe is in and put them both in a room with a door makes a big difference I live in a really really humid area and if it weren’t for that thing I would be either wiping down every crevice of my guns every wk or tryin to get rust off after only a month and that was even with two small silica bead dehumidifiers in the safe I was still seeing it pop up on my blued guns in a short time period but now I don’t have to worry so much I remove a couple gallons a day out of the small room my safe is in so yeah way too much humidity

      I read one article that mentioned the stainless used in rifles can still rust. It's a softer steel than true stainless. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to cut the bore.

    You guys really ride the cerakote D. It’s not THAT great IMO. Yes it is very rust and wear resistant but it’s still very prone to chips and scratches that can lead to rust.
