most important pedal is the Gas pedal. You're not getting to the guitar store without you, or someone else stepping on one.
ha ha good one!!
td tom.... Gas = Guitar Acquisition Syndrome
bahaha! you sir, are a mad man...
td tom walking, riding bikes?
Aaron Armstrong still on the pedals though. nice catch
1. Looper
2. Overdrive
3. Reverb
4. Delay
5. Chorus
You're a hero
Thanks mate
Looper and delay are must haves which are not in the video
Saved me 3 min cheers bro
🙏
It would have been great to add a play demonstration of each pedal sound to emphasise your description.
I agree
seriously, just a list with no demos?
The best example is - no example shown.
Title doesn’t say demos
FunTom best kind of video. RUclips demos are worse than pointless.
Yeah fuck this youtuber
Yeah i was actually expecting even some kind of demos, now i just now what they do but no idea how they actually sound like
Intro sounds like cant stop lol
Exactly.
hey, you're not dead...
Kurt Cobain did Courtney kill u
Kurt Cobain dude i see you commenting on every Nirvana video.. believe me I’ve seen a lot... and now even on a Marty video?
shotgun
its just sad you didnt let us hear what they sound like
I was thinking the exact same thing. A little sound demo would have been great
Exactly. A demo would have served the purpose.
wait what i came here for that... then I'm leaving bye xddd. try for saving my time
Tuner, Compressor, Chorus, Light overdrive, Heavy overdrive, Delay. Covers 90% of music you can play on guitar.
I agree with you
Good list!
Reverb
No Wah?
Thx for input!
1. Gain or Overdrive
2. Wah
3. Delay
4. Looper
5. EQ Pedal (Bass booster, treble booster, octaver, etc.)
6. Volume swell
7. Tuner
8. Reverb
9. Flanger
10. Chorus
What about noise reducer?
Why would you need an eq pedal if your amp already has eq controls?
Carlos Noriega the same reason you’d buy a distortion pedal even tho your amp has distortion/gain nob
I would looper higher on that list. It's not for everybody. But it can be soo helpful when you're starting to learn guitar. Plus you always have a band mate that wants to play ;)
@@elonmush4793 and to write music a good looper is of great help
I think id rather have a delay pedal than a phaser but good list
1. Compressor.
2. Tube Screamer
3. Distortion Pedal
4. Reverb.
5. Delay.
If you are a noob, these are the five pedals that can cover the most ground. After you have experience with these, then you can always add other stuff i.e. phase 90, Chorus, etc. later.
It would be cooler if we could hear the effect the pedals produce.
My Rig:
1. Fender (Stratocaster with a JB Humbucker, Jaguar Cobain (but selfmade), Telecaster)
2. Ibanez (a cheap one but with great sound)
3 Takamine Special editon Black (Awsome Guitar)
1. Fender Cyber-Twin Amp
2. Pod Farm Studio 2.5 Premium (on my Computer)
1. Looper (Loopstation RC-2)
2. Overdrive (Tube Screamer)
3. Fuzz (Big Muff Pi)
4. Distrotion (DS-1 (Blacklabeld), DS-2 90's)
5. Small Clone (Chorus)
6. Vox Wah-Wah
A really good delay pedal is always a nice addition to any pedal board. 🤘🏼
Edward Madrigal Strymon Timeline🕶
Noise gate. Kill that buzz (not the weed one, the hum coming from your single coil pickup).
i reckon
1. Overdrive
2. Distortion
3. Reverb
4. Delay
5. Noise gate
6. Wah
7. Chorus
8. Octaver
9. Fuzz
10. Phaser
Can u please do a tutorial on mr.blue sky by electric light orchestra
Thank you for *demoing* the pedals!
I'm in a band and trust me...I would NEVER go on stage with other players without a compressor. Hit one high and it outrings anyone else and you're gonna get the stink eye. Compressor totally prevents that. You also left out a really good tuner....even slightly out of tune with the others and it will kill a good tune. rock on
EQ! NEVER FORGET EQ ON YOUR BOARD! Every place have different sound acoustics, amps and maybe sometimes even guitars itself, having an EQ on board will help you not only to achieve the perfect tone of your desire but as well understand have frequencies work!
Also another important thing in my opinion is COMPRESSOR and last but not least is DELAY, you might never use it, but you definitely should own at least one.
My favourite pedal is my bicycles left pedal because it is soft but not too soft. The right pedal almost breaks my foot cus' it don't give any!
Overdrive (ts9) , distortion (mxr m75) , chorus (boss ce2), delay (boss dd7), wah wah (gcb95)
Tuner is good. Compressor, noise gate, chorus, delay, auto waa, tremolo, clean boost. Overdrive and, reverb if the amp is not equipped. Maybe a volume with built in waa.
I love this just 3 minutes and not 10 minutes of long talking!! Keep going on
I should actually study for my exams, but watching marty is way more entertaining
Hope you passed king.
Basic for me is overdrive, boost, chorus, analog delay, tremolo, B9 Organ.
Examples of the sounds dude!.awesome video
A Loop pedal is always a cool pedal to have!
In my opinion (the only that matters :)
All guitarist should be pedal geeks. The best part having pedals is that if you dont want to use one or more, then dont. But, like Marty says, with pedals, it tends to open up creativity. Keeping you from plateauing out creatively. Opening doors you never knew were there.
Hey Marty. I spend a lot of time playing with myself... er, I mean, BY myself. I've been thinking of getting an octave pedal to go along with my looper. I know you use one on occasion. Any recommendations?
Pog
I am working on my pedal board for playing out...something I have not done for quite some time. My choices so far are a Color Sound wah ...a Maxon ( same as Ibanez) tube screamer...an Ibanez chorus...a Boss compressor / sustainer...an Echoplex delay...a Robin Trower Overdrive by Fulltone ...as well as a Deja Vibe again by Fulltone. A BBE sonic stomp...a Dunlop Rotovibe and a volume pedal. I do have other pedals but are mostly used for recording...Rat distortion...Boss Turbo Overdrive...Big Muff and A Small Stone Phase Shifter by Electro-Harmonix as well as some others...bottom line...its what you create that means something...
Which pedal should be the most expensive ? Overdrive reverb or delay?
I remember when the first Maestro Fuzz pedal came to our little music store in Southern Illinois in '65 or so. We put it on the store counter, plugged it in and turned it on...we all wondered what possible use there could be for it..other than maybe playing Satisfaction...which was big on the radio around then. The store owner just shook his head. Little did we know that was the beginning of "guitar pedals" and pedal boards. For the record...I didn't like 'em then and still don't. Before this "effects" were usually built in to your amp...Tremolo and Reverb...and once in a while a guy would show up with a modified reel to reel tape machine he used for an "echo" device. Since then there has been a massive proliferation of "pedals" that can make your guitar sound like everything but...a guitar. I own some pedals that I've purchased for "special" circumstances...but, generally... I don't use 'em. That's not to say that if you do use them, it's a bad thing...it's just not my thing. Hey...just a little history lesson, nothin' to get excited about.
For me it’s
Wah
Fuzz
Tuner/Buffer
Tube Screamer
Some kind of chorus/univibe
5. Metal Zone
4. Metal Zone
3. Metal Zone
2. Metal Zone
1. Metal Zone
Correction: Overdrive isn't "also known as" tube screamer. Tube screamer is just a subset in the Overdrive category.
I'm ordering a reverb pedal this week, so I'll have four out of the five (I'm not Dan, far from 20, but I am from Pennsylvania..lol). My other pedal is a flanger. I don't know that a phaser would be of much use to me. I think a delay pedal would be cool and also I think something great to have would be a tuner, so I don't have to unplug my guitar. Maybe one of those headstock tuners would be fine and just get a delay pedal to keep the cost down. Keep it to five. I have a volume pedal that needs a little cleaning of the potentiometer...might add that to the mix!👍😎🎸🎶
I am from PA as well, (Harrisburg Area) however you cant beat having a true bypass tuner, especially if you plan on playing live, its a quick easy check to make sure your in tune and no one hears you. I have a head stock tuner and a app on my phone as well. In case I am playing in my living room its easier much easier to use my phone or a headstock tuner. I got the Snark headstock tuner, with a built in metronome, and the Fender app on my phone. My Pedal tuner is a Boss TU-2 They have a TU-3 now. but there is other options that are just as good. Polytune is smaller and fits right into your pedal board taking up little space. Another setup I seen is with the Ernie Ball Volume Pedal it has a Tuner Output. So you can kill the volume and tune without bypass.
Snark Tuners are around 25 Bucks, a Pedal Tuner with Bypass in between 50 and 100. Depending on the model. and of course the Fender App is free.
fanelli18 thanks for all the info.! I have been thinking lately about adding a pedal tuner to my board. Would be really nice! I did buy a headstock tuner that works well. Btw...I spent a lot of my younger years around the Harrisburg area. Still have relatives and some friends there. It's really grown over the years since I moved to York county in the early 80's!
lol small world, my GF lives in East York.. Well Hellam Twp. I actually use to go to the York Music Shop on Eastern Blvd. I bought two guitars from him, I guess it closed up now. Kinda sad. But Amazon has a selection of Pedal Tuners, I am real picky about not buying something I don't get to try, But I read the reviews and make a decision from there.
fanelli18 wow, it is a small world! I'm in Lower Windsor Township. Not far from Hellam! The music shop was on East Market and closed. I'm not sure if it's the same people or not, but there is a shop still open on Eastern Blvd. He's got some great stuff in there! Some awesome vintage tube amps and some vintage guitars too!. The guitar shop in Red Lion, right near the square, just became a Fender dealer. Has a great selection! Hellam and the surrounding area and little towns is a nice area to live. More peaceful than the city.
Oh yeah I agree she's not too far from Druck Valley Road actually run right into it, So its kinda peaceful far enough away from the City crap but close enough that you don't have to drive an hour to get to Walmart. However The one on Eastern Blvd is listed as closed, it was called York Music Shop, formerly Jims Guitars on Market Street. He did have a nice selection there I bought my fender Acoustic and a 12 String Acoustic from him. plus some mix and match stuff cables, picks, couple of extra straps. I went buy there cause I have an itch for another guitar. She says no, but I'll deal with the heat later HAHA
But I did see the place in Red Lion Advertised, and on Facebook, I am going to have to stop in We have friends in Red Lion. Its how we met via the Glad Crab In Dallastown, I visited another one across town as well Campbells Music shop. I am not 100% with York, but its past Susquehanna Blvd. on Queen St. Real small quaint place he always has some nice deals on quality stuff. He had a vintage martin that I drooled over, but a few grand over my budget. And I wouldn't have felt right asking to touch it, but not be able to buy it.
Marty I need some advice. I started using pedals about a year and a half ago so I’m a novice w pedals.
I have a Boss blues driver, Boss distortion and a Fuzz Face.
For some reason they all sound the same. I can turn one on and play it, turn it off then the next and it sounds exactly like the last.
The Fuzz Face does sound like it has a tiny bit more bass but not much.
Any advice as to what I’m doing wrong?
I’m playing through a Marshall DSL40 on the clean channel w the volume at 10 and gain about 7. But I’ve tried different settings for the gain and volume.
I’ve played w my Epiphone Les Paul w new Pearly Gates pickups (completely gutted and replaced everything w new parts) and my Stratocaster w new Texas Blues pickups (complete overhaul as well).
I’ve seen your videos on the blues driver and distortion and they have distinctly different sounds. No matter what i do there’s no difference in sound.
Thanks
Can you recommend a volume pedal where you can adjust the minimum volume freely? I have one with a minimum volume potentiometer (pedal all the way back) but even setting this to maximum the volume is too low for example an accompaniment and adjusting using your foot precisely while playing is difficult. You would need something that you press back and use it for rhythm, you press it all the way forward and use it for soloing. Now I use a boss equalizer with the volume slightly low and I turn it on and off depending on whether it's rhythm or solo. Thanks bye
Hey, great video Marty! Bit of a random question, but you seem like a great guy to ask! Do you know of any guitar pedals to replicate the tones in Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow? Specifically 'Today', 'Somebody to Love' and 'White Rabbit'. I have searched all corners of the internet, I have been told an Ampeg Scrambler was used on that album, however that is not the tone I am after. I am not after a fuzz tone. I have also seen that a Vox Tone Bender was used, but again this does not replicate the tones I am specifically after. The best example is in the intro to 'Today', a rather clean tone. Thank you!
Maybe a controversial opinion: if you're a beginner, get some sort of multi fx unit (maybe some modeling stuff on the affordable side). They will not be state of the art effects but they will do the job. You get an idea of what sounds they can make. What's a phaser? What's chorus? How does compression affect my signal? How do I play with a delay in time? Etc. Once you learned what you like or use most often, buy that thing as a seperat pedal. I learned I am not a fan of modulation but I loooove to play with delay. Got myself a nice delay pedal after that.
Fuzz, fuzz is key for most of the electric blues I play
Delay & Flange the latter providing passable Chorus in a pinch
What 5 pedals would you suggest for someone who has no pedals that has a limited budget?
What do you think about Multi-effects Pedals? Is the best options for begineers? the cheapest ones like boss gt1 o mooer ge200.
Hm. I've just built a small pedalboard with a reverb, delay, preamp and overdrive. That's all I need. The reverb and delay have options for modulation and tremolo. I don't see the need for a standalone modulation pedal unless that is a vital part of your sound. A good preamp pedal, on the other hand, has a multitude of uses.
Loop pedal is an great option, but usually pretty expensive...
Cool overview for basics but I was kind of looking for specific pedals, not types of effects. Maybe another video?
A good fuzz pedal is always nice to have. I personally love using my Way Huge Swollen Pickle.
Have you tried the Swollen Pickle on a Big Muff?
this dude taught me how to play guitar
Frampton has the solution he has enough pedals to sink a battleship. I've had so many multi effects units over the years but I always come to the conclusion that individual pedals are better, I can never remember where the effects are in the menu I cooked my last one so the decision was made for me.
I bought the Line-6 M9 Stompbox. It is the only effects I have. If you were to add the 5 must have pedals to a scene, which would you choose? If the scene was Hard Rock versus Southern Rock, would your pedal selection change much? How do you use scenes? I'm a big fan Marty.
So which makers do you prefer?
What’s Better: Dedicated Guitar Pedals or Multi-Effects Pedals?
An overdrive and a tube screamer are not the same. It the square vs rectangle issue. Take the Tim for instance.
Tremolo, delay....you could probably crank an overdrive to get a crunch near distortion.
Whoever had the idea for that video and all the little clips to match almost every little word you say: DONT! Sometimes less is more. Should have demoed a few sounds instead.
If you need budget pedals start with Behringer pedals...dirt cheap but sound ok
What is a good sustain pedal ?
I personally really like to have a compression pedal, just a bit to even out and get more sustain.
My top 5: Boss DS2, Big Muff pi, Boss digital delay, Chorus pedal and poly chorus.
I’d add a looper pedal a flanger, tremolo, delay to this list
One of my favorite pedals isn’t really a pedal. It’s the little black amp box by jhx. You put it in the effects loop of your amp and you can crank your amp all the way up and use the black box as an alternative master volume to bring the volume down
Tuner pedal is important for live shows in between songs. A noise gate pedal is probably THE MOST important one of all
I wish he would demonstrate the sounds as he goes on
Means nothing without a demo !
I started playing again after 30 years.
Amazing how much my tastes changed.
Hated the Strat.
Now I love the Strat to death.
Went from a metal distortion that I always kept set on “Carnage,” to my new setup that consists of
Volume Pedal
BOSS DS-1 WAZA
BOSS Looper Station
Fender Reflecting Pool
And a BOSS A/B switch to control the chorus and reverb out of my Roland JC-22.
I guess the old joke is right.
“How many pedals should you have?”
“Uh, four?”
“One more.”
“Five?”
“One more.”
“Six?”
“One more. The answer is ALWAYS “One more.”
😂
Pretty good list. For my style of play I would probably swap the phaser for a delay pedal but great list
it would be cool to hear examples of these when you mention them
100% can't understand why actual examples aren't included
Hey Marty! Great video as always. However I missed a good delay pedal there. I do love the MXR Carbon Copy pedal! I also consider it a must to have pedal!
Greetings from Brazil! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
PS: Still waiting for the “Twice as Hard” lesson! 🎸🎶👍🏻👊🏻
Flanger, Tremolo, Vibrato, Hashimoto, Locomoto......etc !!!
I only have a few pedals that I haven’t got a chance to play with too much yet. Thanks for your top 5
Delay. Flanger which can also be tweaked to sound like a Chorus.
I really like a compressor/sustainer pedal. Really helps my sloppy playing sound not as sloppy. 😁
Love the guide man! Greetings from Singapore!
Couldn't be without my compression/sustainer pedal. Just adds that extra thickness and note sustain
Wow Marty - looks like it took longer to collect and sort the clips than it did to cut the video. As I watch these "countdown" videos, I've become more interested in your video edits than the actual content. Awesome job!
Marty thanks.... I am looking for pedals and your videos help alot!!!
in advance a real good blend is a pitch shifter and a fuzz pedal, maybe throw in a octave pedal and you got a holy trio of tone
I'd add a Fuzz and a delay. I got a great fuzz kit online and built it. Sounds great. Was way less than a bill, even with shipping.
Doing some research, I heard that most pedals only work well with tube amps, and I have a solid state amp (Orange Crush 12). So will only certain pedals work for me, or should I just wait until I have a tube amp?
What's up, Marty? Cool production in this vid.
20 year old Dan from Pennsylvania finding this video right before he walks into guitar center: 🫢🤯wtfffff
I think that you should do every effect through pedals except reverb. Spring reverb is great and it simplifies your signal chain when it’s done in the amp. Maybe it’s just me but I’ll take a tweed amp with reverb over a hall of fame anyday
I purchased a od pedal and it doesn't work as i wanted it to . My guitar amp has 6 chanels : clean warm , clean bright , crunch , super crunch , od 1 and od 2 . When i turn on my pedal it just changes the chanel on my amp . For example if i am playing on clean bright and i activate my pedal it will just change the chanel to od 1 and the knobs don't work . Do i do anything wrong? Plz i need help . (Sorry for my english)
Probably a good multi effect. It will cover most effects well and then you'll only need a couple analogs and you can get almost every guitar sound you've heard.
How about the compression pedal??? Whats with missing that!?
Starting off with a Phaser? Must have? Bold.
A delay pedal ..univibe ..noise gate ..flanger ..octave .compressor..just a few got thought
1. Tuner
2. chorus
3. Drive
4. Preamp
5. Delay
6. Reverb
I really like delay can’t wait to get a delay and a wah pedal .. my amp has day or reverb but not both at the same time and no range id love to get one with reverse delay that sounds great too.. oh the possibilities if I had endless bank lol guitar is so much fun and so vast so glad I’m finally learning at 29. Marty you’ve been so helpful can’t say it enough man. Learning purple haze from your video today.
Bruce Kelly I played drums since I was little. I didn't start to play guitar until I was 30. Some people said why now! It was one of the best things I ever did! I never listened to anybody anyway...lol. I love it! Stick with it and you'll be happy you did! Good luck!👍😎🎸🎶
74dart man thanks for the encouragement man I will I really love it so mad I waited I got a lil first act when I was 13 still have it and high action was hard to play etc so my advice to anyone starting or getting their kids into it I recommend letting them pick it out and getting a set up for them. For example I just got my 7 year old daughter a squier mini strat if they like how it looks n feels they’ll want to pick it up.. plus no one in my family loved instruments and music like I did so she has advantage cuz she sees me practice and wants to get in on it so that’s my two cents hope it helps someone but yes I’m so happy i picked it back up. Also side not mini strat or ibanez mikro Jackson dinky jr all those short scales are ton of fun for adults to mess around on too 😊
Bruce Kelly that's great you're getting your daughter into playing. I think the biggest thing when starting is that cheap guitars (and I've heard some more expensive ones too) have horrible action and so many people quit! Their fingers hurt and they give up! That's good advice for people to get the guitars set up properly. It makes it so much easier! I hopes she sticks with it too! It'll be cool for the two of you to jam some day! Btw...a 13 year old named Toby Lee just got blues guitarist of the year award for 2018! He has a RUclips channel. May be an inspiration to your daughter. The boy is amazingly talented! Good luck!☺
Bruce Kelly I think Toby is the U.K. young blues artist of the year...anyway he's great!
74dart sooo true about action and set up..and ya that kid Toby amazing I love blues n this lil girl Zoey in youtube ages like 13 but check out her videos when she was like 7 she was better at 7 than I am now haha it’s amazing
Marty I only have an electric guitar with no amp and roommates that are easily annoyed. What kind of pedals should I get that are easily affordable, don't need an amp, that I can plug in some headphones? Only with great distortion if possible
I like flanger. I never liked chorus and found a flanger pedal sort of achieves the same thing but with more depth
Are distortion pedals not good or are they just a different kinda overdrive pedal? And plz teach us seapony's "nothing left" i love that song! Thanx mr Schwartz!
What about a loop pedal?
Cool video! I'm not right there with you on the 5 picks (delay? distortion?) but the nerdy jokes were spot on haha, loved it!
lm lookingfor some effects pedals that will compliment the full warm sound of a gretsch guitar .
Love the fun Video Marty. None of that "Here's my clean tone through a Strat into a Marshall 50,000 watt amp" (forgetting to mention going through 20 Super Fuzz pedals and then ripping up and down the frets for 5 minutes at ear piercing levels finishing with the high E bend mit pained expression). "And here it is with my Forever Reverb. (and aforementioned 20 Super Fuzz, slashing up and down the fretboard at ear piercing levels with a squeeling high E bend mit pained expression.) My fave pedal is Strymon Decco! Try it. You'll be flabbergastard (That's French)
I heard EQ pedals can be little game changers.
awesome video , good stuff for 2018 god job Marty
Overdrive, univibe, reverb, delay...thru a hot rodded jcm 800...
