Elvis was the true original, everyone who came after had the luxury of having had Elvis leading the way. He was totally self taught talent, his guitar, piano and his most powerful asset that amazing voice. I often think we forget Elvis was only 21yo here, on TV in front of 54 million US citizens, he drew so much wrath from the establishment because he was from the south and it was the height of segregation and he was singing and moving like the black singers of the time, so I think he was very courageous to have stuck with this and not bowed to the power of the establishment. Great video analysis as always, really love when u focus on Elvis.

To Elvis, music was music and he had many influences, not just black artists, but also the great white gospel quartets, pop and country artists of the day. Elvis was color blind to ethnicity and race. The South in those days was not the place for a "white" boy to be singing black rhythm and blues, but there he was. D.J. and Scotty both recounted to me how crazy it got sometimes and the abuse they faced by simply playing music. Some artists like Little Richard who Elvis covers Richard's "Ready Teddy" credits Elvis for breaking down the color barrier in music while others criticized him for taking their music... Elvis was the "Big Bang" of music, but it was a group effort. He needed Scotty, Bill and later D.J. and became the template for a rock and roll band of drums, bass, rhythm and lead guitar.

Fil - imagine tuning into Ed Sullivan in 1956 and seeing this! I was young, but my older sister, 14 years old was screaming at the TV as Elvis performed. Mine was a musical house so my Mom and Dad also enjoyed his performance. Notice how Elvis cups his left hand behind his ear at 2:17 and other times to check if he's on pitch. My own revelation to Elvis came when RCA issued an LP called the Sun Sessions. OMG - I had thought his career began with "Heartbreak Hotel" but those 5 Sun singles set my hair on fire. What made Elvis unique is his love of music, be it pop, country, rhythm and blues or gospel. He just loved it all. Later in my life both D.J. and Scotty both recounted to me how crazy it got and the abuse they faced by simply being "white" and playing "black" music in the deep south in those early years. Stories that haven't appeared in any book. Elvis was the Big Bang of rock and roll, but it was a group effort. He needed Scotty, Bill and later D.J. and they became the template for a rock and roll band of drums, bass, rhythm and lead guitar. Take away Elvis' rhythm guitar on those early Sun records and they aren't the same. He was every bit a part of the sound. Loved your analysis.

      I can believe it.
Several years ago there was an interview conducted with the man who was the head of event management at Madison Square Garden...i forget what his name is but he served that post for a very long time working with acts like Led Zeppelin, Frank Sinatra, Elton John, KISS...you name it...
He spoke of the famous 1972 concerts which were two nights with Elvis in NYC, and described the very first time he walked onto the stage on the first night...he described the eruption from the audience (I'm paraphrasing) "if god himself had just walked onto that stage....I never heard such a reaction before or since for anyone else"
This can be written off as an exaggeration I suppose but with ELVIS such a reaction like what was described haas been often described in similar fashion by those who were lucky to see him in '69 & '70 in Las Vegas...he had a charisma, a sort of power of presence with an audience that's not been witnessed, at that level, since.
A few have come close but no one, in my opinion, has perfectly matched or exceeded that level of reaction.
Carl Perkins once described Elvis on the record as the "total package" and he's correct. He had every single trait that an entertainer could ever need or want to possess regarding his appearance and his musical talents.
Privately, however, that level of talent, power, influence, impact was too much for him to handle properly....and it killed him.
In one aspect he was everything and in the same aspect he was too much perhaps...I can't imagine being him for 24hrs let alone for 42 years but it rewarded the planet as we know it, but at a terrible personal cost to him.

First, bravo and thank you! This is special to me. On the night he died, they played a lot of '56 "wiggling" TV performances, this among them. It's special because as I finally drifted to sleep still in tears at about 4 AM, this particular performance (the shots from behind and above) was acting as an "eye-worm" on me. I have no explanation as they played a LOT of other clips. It's my last image of him from the last 24-hour-period when he had been alive. So many thanks for the deep dive.
Guitarwise, it's such a simple song; Elvis was only thickening up the sound. Scotty's just having fun. All very relaxed and casual.
But scoot forward 20 years. New Year's Eve, 1976, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. "Reconsider Baby." Watch Elvis play the guitar. It's a very bluesy blues! Just watch him play. It was one last one for the . . . end of the road. He'll never see another new year. And he decided to do a little something on guitar. Heck, it was New Year's - a night to "hang loose" as Elvis would say. "Reconsider Baby" December 31,1976, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Whenever you get the chance.

The King. I was a little kid back then, and even I KNEW that he had something very unique and very special. I remember the day that he passed away. It ruined my sister’s birthday. Everyone was in shock and in mourning, frankly. My brother still to this day, listens to predominantly only Elvis music, and music from that era. There haven’t been many great rock bands since the early 90’s,after Nirvana. The Foo Fighters, Some Green Day stuff, Nickelback, (who gets a bad rap), many solo artists, singer songwriter type stuff. Thereare some I’ve liked, but not enough, to purchase the full LP’s. What content I did purchase, wasn’t great. FUNNY, but radio has ABSOLUTELY NO IMPACT ON WHAT I listen to these days. To humiliate myself even further, I FINALLY bought a new car. I don’t even know how to turn on the radio yet. I haven’t listened to current radio in years.

@@RoryVanucchi so true. Michael Jackson was one hell of an impressive performer too. I have to give him credit. He was a fantastic dancer/performer. The fame, was his undoing. So many of them, are so FAMOUS, that literally have no peace. Always surrounded by security, never being able to fully TRUST anyone. All the money in the world isn’t worth losing the human connection, In MY opinion. If I could have fortune, without the fame, I’d definitely choose that. Be careful what you wish for, I suppose.

Fil, again thanks so much for this. You mention Elvis guitar ability, for the most part. He enjoys playing, but uses the guitar as a prop more so. He played guitar more in the earlier years. You’re getting good at the realization of just how good he was. An area of absolute excellence was his natural ability for timing and rhythm. He is only 21 in this video! Thanks for this fun reaction. I lived it, I am 80 and was a teenager when this was made. He was indeed electrifying indeed and having listened to our parents music this was from another planet. He was so obviously sexy that we almost felt guilty liking him. The clergy and the PTA weren't real happy about his impact. He was dangerous, sexy, could sing and he loved his mother. What more could we ask for. One important thing to note in his 23 year career he kept progressing with the times, and with his musicians. In fact people today hear his TCB band and say wow what musicians he had. He was executive producer of his music and was a perfectionist some fun things to listen to are his rehearsals, and the fun he had. "Elvis Presley in the Studio" 1970, "Elvis Presley Jaw dropping jam" sit-down in Vegas 1970, and his controversial beginnings in "Elvis Presley and the Black Community" see how much he struggled to get where he was. I enjoy your show. Thanks and Be blessed

And don't forget D.J. Fontana! It's funny that when Elvis was going to do his audition Sam Phillips called Scotty Moore and asked him to come to the studio with Bill Black to back him up. Scotty asked if wanted a drummer and Sam told him no, because Elvis seemed a little nervous and he wanted to build up his confidence. He thought a drummer might make him more nervous. But they continued that way on all the Sun sessions, right up to the last single recorded there, Mystery Train. After DJ joined them the contract was sold to RCA and the first song with drums was Heartbreak Hotel, Elvis' first song on RCA.
I 'm with you, they should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are in the Nashville Musicians Hall of fame. It's in Nashville but it cover all genres, Booker T. and the MGs, Al Kooper, and the L.A. Wrecking Crew are all in it, to give you and idea of the variety.

My friends at school called him Elvis the Pelvis. His first album was mostly #1 hits. Nobody had ever used albums (then a new form of records: LP long-playing at 33 1/3 rpm on the turntable with 6 or 7 songs on each side of the record. Rock and roll was all on 45 rpm small records played at sock hop dances in the high school gym (with an A and B side), because juke boxes in diners played them. Steve Allen and Ed Sullivan (I still recall watching him on both shows when I was a kid) gave Elvis rare TV time on their Sunday early evening variety shows in the mid-1950s. Remember: Rock and Roll was virtually banned (an "instrument of the devil) from TV until the very end of the 1960s.
