To me, what makes his expertise at showmanship and owning the stage even more impressive is that he was just barely three years out of high school in 1956! He was 21 here. The film he's referring to was his first movie "Love Me Tender" which co-starred Richard Egan and Debra Padget. His fine natural acting ability, humor, and dramatic expression were already showing in it.
Elvis from 1954-58 was pure energy. A lightning rod. That's really his great period. I love his 1968-73 era as well but '54-58 is really what made him a legend. When you listen to all of his recordings from that period, he's absolutely full of great energy, sound, and it's just addictive to listen to and to watch. These recordings are 70 years old now and still strike people and light you up - how many artists can say that? Not many.

He was a precious gift from God. One that we will never see again. I am 70. I was there at the beginning. In 1956 when I was 3 years old, my whole family went to see Elvis at the Municipal Auditorium in New Orleans. I can still remember bits and pieces of it, especially his dancing. My sister was a teenager so I was right in the middle of all of the wonderful fifties rock and roll. In fact, Frankie Ford of Sea Cruise fame used to practice in our backyard in New Orleans with his band. I had a wonderful childhood and my parents also were very cool and loved every minute of it.
I truly enjoy hearing a young person as yourself appreciate Elvis. I’m 68 and grew up listening to this legend. I also, thankfully, got to see him in concert on New Years Eve, 1976. I feel very blessed to have shared the same building as him. As another commenter said, “Elvis is eternal”. He was a gift from God...
If you want to hear what his voice could really do, If I Can Dream, Trouble and Tryin’ To Get To You from his 1968 Comeback Special are peak Elvis and mandatory listening. His range and vocal control were off the charts. He could go from smooth to raspy and back again effortlessly. He could sing any song. Not just rock. He was great with blues.

His voice wasn't fully developed, he got much better and had more control later on.. Can you imagine, how good he already was , and also take in account that he didn't use a standard microphone, but a microphone above his head out of view had to pick up that voice...Simply history in the making.
I love Elvis version of "Rags to riches" and "It's now or never" . He had such a diverse voice and he made you Feel the song No matter if it was a rock, pop, Gospel, country or blues song .

With time, I added the following stages, and I still love them all. When I became his fan, he was old enough to be my father. Now, I`m old enough to be his mother, and sooner than I would like, I will be old enough to be his grandmother :) But when I`m watching him being as young, energetic, and charming as he is in this clip, he`s turning me into that teenager again, who was madly in love with this beautiful young man :)

Television hardly entered homes in the 50s. But I've heard Elvis great voice often, later. One of a kind he was. Elvis was the first performer who used his pelvis so obviously. His nickname was Elvis the Pelvis. I think that this completely new way of stage performance caused those girls to start yelling and screaming. I’ve this to share with you: Elvis Presley was a baritone whose voice had an extraordinary compass - the so-called register - and a very wide range of vocal colour. It covered two octaves and a third, from the baritone low-G to the tenor high B, with an upward extension in falsetto to at least a D flat. Presley's best octave was in the middle, D-flat to D-flat. "He has always been able to duplicate the open, hoarse, ecstatic, screaming, shouting, wailing, reckless sound of the black rhythm-and-blues and gospel singers. But he has not been confined to that one type of vocal production." In ballads and country songs he was able to belt out "full-voiced high Gs and As that an opera baritone might envy," showing a remarkable ability to naturally assimilate styles. His "voice has always been weak at the bottom, variable and unpredictable. At the top it is often brilliant. His upward passage would seem to lie in the area of E flat, E and F." Hound Dog (on record, if not this TV performance) definitely shows off his vocal ability. The grit and growl in his voice in the opening line is one of the most amazing vocals ever recorded.
Fantastic study. For his vocal range, you must show 'What now my love' from the Aloha rehearsal show. An amazing power house of a performance. Listen and marvel at that final note he reaches!

For sheer vocal power, dynamic control, and range, captured in far greater resolution than here, try the live performances of "An American Trilogy" or "What Now My Love," from 1973, or "Bridge Over Troubled Water" or "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" from 1970. You recognized already that this is not the best sample for his work - he has so many other offerings that feature much better and more dynamic vocal control and range, even from this era (1956 - "Love Me", "Don't Be Cruel", "Teddy Bear", etc). But your analysis is so interesting and insightful. I'd say his voice was at its peak in the 1960s and his performances from 1969-71, highlighted by the "That's The Way It Is" concert movie from 1970. I really find 1973 to be a turning point for him. His voice was so good yet he was so troubled. This is when his personal and health issues, not to mention his self-harming habits, started to really overwhelm him.
I totally agree the rock and roll of early Elvis didn't empress me but as I got older and heard him sing some wonderful ballads I realized this man had beautiful voice

In the spring of '56 my closest friend told me I had to hear this new song, so different from anything he'd ever heard: Heartbreak Hotel. And it was. Then in the summer of '56 in Army processing at Fort Ord, I Want You, I Need You, I Love You filled the barracks. To top it off, Elvis replaced me in the Army! I left active duty 3/24/1958, the day he came in. My son's wedding songs were all Elvis songs! A friend visited Graceland, and bought and gave to me a little statuette of Elvis, which sits atop a bookcase in my den. Obsessed? Neh.
Another captivating Elvis appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show is when Elvis was filmed only from the waist up due to the hysteria that Elvis evoked when he sang Hound Dog, is his performance of Peace In The Valley. Also, I suggest listening to Separate Ways, American Trilogy and Elvis rendition of Unchained Melody and Bridge Over Troubled Water. A multi talented performer, who left us way toosoon. But, as long as Elvis'music continues to be played then his memory and legacy will forever live on.
There’s a video of Elvis live from the later years performing Suspicious Minds where he plays with one of his backup singers that I love. It shows his humor & talent so well. He was a little before my time, but when he was young, he was the best looking man I’ve ever seen.

I remember years ago giving some advice to a younger musician who needed some serious dynamics in his vocals: Told him to listen to a lot of Elvis. From 1 song to the next, Elvis was able to adjust his dynamics in a way that separated him from the rest BTW: one of my favourite performances, even if it in a movie, is Trouble from the King Creole movie.
Yes! She ought to react to that scene from the movie. And King Creole was a seriously great movie. The filmography in it is awesome too! Black and white with the art deco and dramatic long shadows etc. Love those movies. Mid to late fifties movies still had some of that 1940s look to them before it all went away in the 60s

My dad was an Army "Lifer" and when he was stationed in Germany we lived there with him... one day he came home to our home and asked me to give him one of my Elvis records, I picked out Hound Dog and he ran back out... when he returned in the evening he gave my 45 back, with Elvis' autograph to me... seems that Elvis was washing his CO's jeep at the wash rack... what a piece of history...!

So, it's a bit special to look at it again, I think the 50s is the best of all times, both in terms of music, cars, furniture, clothes and hairstyles. If you would think about another analyse of his voice I can recommend to watch and see Elvis perform “What now my love” in the Aloha from Hawaii special of 1973 or “Hurt” as he performed in 1977, just 6 six before his death. In that last performance he is visibly in a bad shape and obviously to sick to perform. That knowing makes the performance just mind blowing.

Hound Dog (on record, if not this TV performance) definitely shows off his vocal ability. The grit and growl in his voice in the opening line is one of the most amazing vocals ever recorded.

For sheer vocal power, dynamic control, and range, captured in far greater resolution than here, try the live performances of "An American Trilogy" or "What Now My Love," from 1973, or "Bridge Over Troubled Water" or "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" from 1970. Or many, many others.
And Art Garfunkel said that Elvis could not sing!! Saying after the Army Elvis had an uncontrolled vibrato ..are you kidding me??!! That man has thee most wonderful control!! Listen to Elvis' version of Bridge Over Troubled Water live On Tour 1972. The Elvis version has so much vocal power that both Simon and Garfunkel could never match!!
First of all, thank you very much for your reaction to Elvis. You recognized already that this is not the best sample for his work - he has so many other offerings that feature much better and more dynamic vocal control and range, even from this era (1956 - "Love Me", "Don't Be Cruel", "Teddy Bear", etc). But your analysis is so interesting and insightful. I'd say his voice was at its peak in the 1960s and his performances from 1969-71, highlighted by the "That's The Way It Is" concert movie from 1970. I really find 1973 to be a turning point for him. His voice was so good yet he was so troubled. This is when his personal and health issues, not to mention his self-harming habits, started to really overwhelm him.
Check out Elvis's song Surrender. He hits a note at the end that is unbelievable. Great song to hear his range in the early 1960s.
I liked his voice more in later years. He was vocally even better in 1968 (Comeback Special) and 1973 (Aloha from Hawaii).
I totally agree the rock and roll of early Elvis didn't empress me but as I got older and heard him sing some wonderful ballads I realized this man had beautiful voice

In the spring of '56 my closest friend told me I had to hear this new song, so different from anything he'd ever heard: Heartbreak Hotel. And it was. Then in the summer of '56 in Army processing at Fort Ord, I Want You, I Need You, I Love You filled the barracks. To top it off, Elvis replaced me in the Army! I left active duty 3/24/1958, the day he came in. My son's wedding songs were all Elvis songs! A friend visited Graceland, and bought and gave to me a little statuette of Elvis, which sits atop a bookcase in my den. Obsessed? Neh.

Another captivating Elvis appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show is when Elvis was filmed only from the waist up due to the hysteria that Elvis evoked when he sang Hound Dog, is his performance of Peace In The Valley. Also, I suggest listening to Separate Ways, American Trilogy and Elvis rendition of Unchained Melody and Bridge Over Troubled Water. A multi talented performer, who left us way toosoon. But, as long as Elvis'music continues to be played then his memory and legacy will forever live on.

There’s a video of Elvis live from the later years performing Suspicious Minds where he plays with one of his backup singers that I love. It shows his humor & talent so well. He was a little before my time, but when he was young, he was the best looking man I’ve ever seen.

I remember years ago giving some advice to a younger musician who needed some serious dynamics in his vocals: Told him to listen to a lot of Elvis. From 1 song to the next, Elvis was able to adjust his dynamics in a way that separated him from the rest
BTW: one of my favourite performances, even if it in a movie, is Trouble from the King Creole movie.
Yes! She ought to react to that scene from the movie. And King Creole was a seriously great movie. The filmography in it is awesome too! Black and white with the art deco and dramatic long shadows etc. Love those movies. Mid to late fifties movies still had some of that 1940s look to them before it all went away in the 60s

My dad was an Army "Lifer" and when he was stationed in Germany we lived there with him... one day he came home to our home and asked me to give him one of my Elvis records, I picked out Hound Dog and he ran back out... when he returned in the evening he gave my 45 back, with Elvis' autograph to me... seems that Elvis was washing his CO's jeep at the wash rack... what a piece of history...!

Great video, and you look great too. Fun, to see the old clip of Elvis again, you've seen it on TV from time to time over the years. I was born in October 1956, when this recording was made. So, it's a bit special to look at it again, I think the 50s is the best of all times, both in terms of music, cars, furniture, clothes and hairstyles. And all the women wore nylon stockings and put on nice make-up in those days. You have good points in your videos, keep up the good work! 😉
