I have listened to his voice from the beginning of his career to the end. No artist played their instrument like he did. It was uncanny the nuances, tone, range, power and all around play he could display through different stages in his life. He said one time, " I don't have a good voice, I just know what to do with it". He was only half right. He took a very beautiful toned voice to places that surprised the listener and left you wondering what just happened and how did he do that. Truly a master. Vicki
I was drawn to Elvis voice as a kid. He just stood out to me. The way he sung, the sound. I loved most pop up to about the early 90s then noticed all this electronic supplementation, over mixing etc in the new music. I just wanted to hear a great voice in its natural form. One reason I love Whitney Houston too. I can listen to Elvis forever and not get tired.
I listened to Elvis since the day I was born... And then when we went home, my mother would make me play records of someone that sounded just like him on the Hi-Fi stereo! 🤭 Not only did she have every single record, but I could pick the record that had a particular song that she wanted to hear and was only 3 years old! I learned to read English by playing (mostly) Elvis records. Of course the first tape I bought was Elvis and I have purchased every tape and CD ever recorded by Elvis. The only artist that makes me cry in almost every song. 😭 P.S. my mother was one of his Cooks and housekeepers.
I suppose auto tune and the like are what I hear in today's music, which I don't particularly enjoy. Even the lyrics are meaningless. Elvis' talent is rare these days, if it exists at all.
Yes, I, too, appreciate the respect you show Elvis. Took me a while to see it, but now I do. If you are so smart to be able to take that voice and play with it as you do and keep all the fans happy, you are a smart man. That is a precious voice. Thank you.
Mine too. I love the master cut of Bridge. I have listened intently to all cuts and the master is just the best. I have tested this on friends and they agree. I have seen many a person cry as Elvis sings this on the huge screen for Elvis in Concert. It had his real band members and singers live on stage, with his voice and three screens. He came from obscurity. Just another poor boy from the Deep South. Only his voice and looks set him apart. His influence was exactly the same as the folks he grew up with in Tupelo. But that voice was indeed a God given gift.
My Professor for music appreciation class said that Elvis had the widest range of ANY untrained singer. His voice was BEAUTIFUL, especially his gospel.
Elvis’s vibrato is legend. It really is an amazing thing to see a visual of his voice. If they auto tune his voice, they are basically killing Elvis all over again.
To hear Elvis voice and vibrato before he had found his sound and image, listen to My Happiness recorded by 18 year old Elvis as a private demo at Memphis Recording Service in 1954.
If there ever was a singer as close to perfection as possible, it would be Elvis. And to sound that good Live is unbelievable...never will be another Elvis. And as good a singer that he was, he was a much larger humanitarian...
My sister just about cries when she talks about seeing Elvis in concert. She said people where saying he was out of shape but she said hearing him sing in person is something she was so glad she was able to do. Priceless!
People don't realise how ill Elvis was in his last Vegas years. The Colonel had him doing 7 shows a week to pay the Colonels massive gambling debt , when he had glaucoma, a painful genetic bowel condition & a prescription pill addiction. If you read the 3 bodyguard's book Elvis: What Happened, there's an awful scene where his Dr was trying to rouse a semi conscious Elvis with ice water & the Colonel just barks "get him on stage"& leaves the room with not a shred of concern.
@@sarahholland2600 If you read that book, remember that a lot of it I have found, through knowing people who knew Elvis, and researching myself, and by pure accident, is a bunch of disgruntled nothings out to make money and betray the man who had been so good to them. Ask another bodyguard, Jerry Schilling, of his time with Elvis. Of all the gifts, cars, houses, clothes, food, Hawaii vacations and much more they ALL got from Elvis. They were slugs, as were the ones after Elvis died who wrote a trash book. Never has there been an entertainer in history so betrayed by those around him, who were given so much, as ELVIS. Likely a part of the reason he died so young.
@@keetonplace I found the book sad. Yes he was great to his entourage , my comment doesn't say he wasn't, but the bits to do with The Colonel have a ring of truth to them that tallies with other TV documentaries that also addressed The Colonels financial abuse of Elvis. It was also quite accurate re Priscilla's frustration expressed in other books that she wanted more couple time without the entourage & that it played a factor in their marriage being un successful

I was almost afraid to watch this in case they messed with Elvis' voice with auto-tuning. So happy to hear him in his glorious natural state. Love all the different variations & tones to his voice. Auto-tuning takes away the individual human element which makes singers sound uniquely different from each other.

What gets me is that Elvis never took a voice/ singing lesson in his life and he was the real deal. Elvis didn't have to use gimmicks. ELVIS was pure performer all entertainer...
Elvis would never need auto tune or any type of manipulation of his voice, unlike most of todays singers that utilize auto tune or other studio gimmicks. This man had a God given talent and God made sure that Elvis s voice couldn't be manipulated in the studio. Miss you Elvis
J.D. Sumner said that was the reason why he was refused by Jim Blackwell. Elvis was all over the place and wouldn't sing one base music. He would sing tenor one moment and bass the next. Personally I don't think they should have ever changed the way the layout of the music was. Because it took away everyone else who made him great.

It shows thatYou and millions like you re not professional & never ....... Just talent itself without vocal practices & secret private lessons, without step by step guide and connections, sound engineers, also stage acting ,also speaking and singing with dynamics , vocal higher range requirements need to be furbishing more and more on the techniques, until he/becomes barely somehow famous . Afterwards is the marketing marketers & connectors going for advertising alive from one continent to another. Also I am aware about auto tunes & other electronic devices with vibrato effects , thin or thick tremble voice only that helps only but if the singer goes *off key* then the equipment can't help. Regular sheepled people, everyday people think that and believe that only but only the talent alone made him her famous to be heard on radio, TV disk cassettes, CD , D.V.D. Holy Cow 🐄! Talent is only for starting purposely. Also many people who are not not not musicians can understand all what I said. It's also easy to think and believe something *like a chicken 🐔 with no head. Also the freedom of speech talking like a chicken 🐔 with no head full of nonsenses is allowed to post a desired comment anyway so we may see them .
Talent doesn't need autotune. The man is a legend with natural ability and vocal control. Other artists have said you had to hear him live to feel his warmth and presence in the song.

I've never seen such change in such a very very short career. Remarkable
Rolling Stone reports Simon later heard Elvis’ “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” He felt the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s interpretation of the track was dramatic. “But so was the song,” he added. “When I first heard Elvis perform ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ it was unbelievable. I thought to myself, ‘How the hell can I compete with that?'”
Elvis's voice is naturally dramatic. So performing a song like this, makes the song more powerful than it was before. I like both versions. Presley's voice though, brings it to another level for me...
Vocally, Simon couldn't compete with Presley, however, fortunately, Garfunkel was the main singer on the S&G single, and even better, the _only_ singer on the live video Fil recently posted. This is the first I heard Elvis's version, and, yes, I can see where Paul might say something along those lines, though I would also point out that he and Art had a major falling out, and they never have totally reconciled, so I don't know how much of his praise of the King's rendition is genuine and how much a subtle jab at Garfunkel. It doesn't matter which it is, because Elvis's is a truly great performance. As far as I'm concerned, Art's solo is my go-to version, and I think he more or less "owns" the song, though that may be much an associative response than anything. Maybe say he and Elvis are co-owners. It's instructive to note that Presley's arrangement is more or less identical with Simon & Garfunkel's, and that makes a lot of sense given that it is a Gospel styling, and Elvis was steeped in Gospel as much as he was R&B.
He was so underrated as a vocalist because of his larger than life persona and sexual magnetism that blasted on the scene during an era that was ready to explode with that energy. He had a magnificent voice that's finally being appreciated. Great vid!
Elvis "was so underrated as a vocalist" is probably the most ridiculous comment I've ever read on youtube! - Kiri Te Kanawa highly respected opera singer in 2014, “Elvis in his 20’s was the best singer that I ever heard” - Glen Campbel, “Elvis is the best singer that ever lived” - Roy Orbison, “Elvis was the firstest with the mostest" - Jackie Wilson, “Nobody can sing blues better than Elvis” John Lennon, “Before Elvis there was nothing” - B.B.King, “Elvis had an influence on all of us. They didn’t make a mistake when they called him the king” - Little Richard, “About every 1000 years God sends the world a messiah, Elvis was ours”....
@@MBrady1970 Yes he was underrated as a vocalist; no, not by his fans and peers in the music industry, but by the media and institutions like the Recording Academy et al. How many Grammys did Elvis win? Answer: One, for his "How Great Thou Art" gospel album! And therein lies the reason, considering the times. Elvis was not respected as an 'artist or vocalist' by the 'establishments'. Sure, his fans adored him and bought his records by the millions, and sure, his fellow artists knew and appreciated his immense vocal talent, but he didn't get those props from the media, some radio stations, parents, the religious communities, and the Recording Industry. Elvis was first and foremost to them a problem to society; his vocal ability was the last thing they saw or heard. While Sinatra was being dubbed with nicknames like "The Voice," Elvis was dubbed "The Pelvis." That's one of the reasons he appeared on Sinatra's show, to try and change that image and gain respect as a vocalist and artist. So you can say that my statement that "Elvis was underrated as a vocalist" is "ridiculous" all you want, but it's a fact! And I lived through those times to know.
@Adrian CV Well I assure you, I'm not an idiot... now go read my latest reply to @Michael Brady and perhaps you'll get clarity. And maybe next time, ask what someone means before calling them names.

Wow, we should all be happy that nobody had auto tune back in the day for Elvis' voice. The range of his vibrato is simply amazing. You are so right on. That's why it was so unique. He made it his own. He understood emotion and how vibrato resonated. He got the psychology and body vibration within people. Elvis was no dummy. He could hit everything, right on. It wasn't what he was going for. He wanted the crowd to enjoy it and feel it.
Elvis has the most beautiful voice ever recorded. His impersonators cannot capture his vibratto. Maybe that vibratto is one reason Pavarotti said he could not sing like Elvis. Elvis' tone of voice also sets him apart. I listen to him in the dark. The beauty of his voice overwhelms me.
He had so much emotion in his voice and it feels authentic. That is why his favorite songs to sing were emotional and often gospel. He sang with his heart and his audience could feel it. Even in this analysis I can feel the powerful heart and soul of Elvis. Thank you Fil for this thoughtful and respectful analysis of an American treasure.
I really enjoyed your analysis of Elvis voice, he was one of a kind, and I pray they don't try to mess anything up in new releases. He sang with such feeling and that's what made him so special and why we always recognize his voice. He didn't and doesn't need auto tune! His voice was good given and perfection and you don't mess with that!
A remarkable, unique, and the most beautiful voice ever heard...why would anyone want to auto tune perfection! There have very few people with the talent that ELVIS had. Well, I actually do not think anyone has ever had the talent that he had! GOD blessed ELVIS with such an absolutely glorious voice and in return ELVIS praised GOD with it! Most entertainers tend to forget just who; meaning GOD, gave them the talent they have! That is most entertainers, except ELVIS PRESLEY!!!
With all the talent that Elvis displayed during copious live performances, how could anyone dare to even suggest that he could ever have been auto tuned?
His abundance of volume, tone and breath is fantastic. Instead of clinical, precise accuracy he instead basically carpet bombs the notes. This adds overtones and undertones that appeal to the human element of music. Great video Fil. Your voice is fantastical!
Makes a natural singer like Elvis , not better , but bad due to note 'clipping", or in Elvis'case , not reductions, And yes, auto tune makes other performers sound better, that is why they have it ! :)
I couldn't ha e said it any better. He was truly blessed with a unique talent given from our Lord. I'm glad we had the technology to save his performances so we have them to listen to and watch.

Proves his magical vibrato moved as fast as he did on stage! Great video showing how amazing this musical giant was. No one will ever touch his catalogue too with such a range of music he performed. Your analysis shows, not only with the way phones are controlling our lives, that perfection in everything is wanted by so many. Slight imperfections are what separates us from becoming sterile computers. Let the natural art breathe! Elvis will always be at the top of the game and to me anyway, like so many others, is perfection personified.
Elvis' vocal ability changed quite dramatically from his 50's, 60's to 70's. I really liked his ability to use different effects for different songs, such as Love Me Tender or Is it So Strange, to Jailhouse Rock. Then it's different again for other periods of his career. For me he was one of the greatest singers pf all time. Wonder what he would think that these days that his music has been added to, changed, re arranged and analysed so much.
Not many people comment or notice how much Elvis voice changed over the years. Natural changes but also from prescription drug abuse. He always sounded great though. I like his sound up to 1969 ish the best. The change from his 1968 comeback to his Aloha in 73 is huge. Thats just 5 years. Having said that he still sounded great in 1973. He was the best ever in my mind
@Adrian CV I agree his voice was still great in 1973 just no longer at the prime. My favorite is "What now my Love" Gives me goose bumps listening to it. Love the way he belted songs out in the 68 comeback. I also agree Elvis was best from his return from Germany to 1969. I Love the song Surrender. Yes his time in Vegas was a huge factor on his voice changing. Listen to him in 1969 and compare to 1971. Obvious change. Drugs, eating habits, work schedule etc all were magnafied and accelerated the rapid changed after he started in Vegas. I've heard it said in interviews Vegas killed him
@@paulthorsen9211 Vegas did not kill him. He liked it out there. Went out ahead and stayed after. He went to others shows and had fun. Yes, it was grueling to start with, 2 months a year 7 nights a week, but he was a young man and did very well. As time went by, the schedule changed to less time there, until finally it was 2 weeks. He was in bad shape by then. He was the hottest ticket in America in the 70's. He toured everywhere, nonstop. I researched that and it boggled my mind how hard this man worked on the road and the venues Parker put him in that needed to be bigger, so he had to do TWO, THREE shows in some cities. He outdid everyone. It was all laid out there for me to how many were at each concert. Better records could not have been kept. Elvis is the most documented entertainer, ever. Although Plant adores Elvis, I think he believes HE was the hottest ticket. Nope.
It was a quote from an interview from one of his own. 1970 onward Elvis health, voice and appearance changed a lot in very little time. Everything accellerated. Yes in the beginning it is said elvis loved Vegas. True 1969 Elvis in Vegas compare to1972 I see and hear a big change.though
@EXO Kai is my Michael Jackson The voice of Elvis was clearly better from his earlier days up to about 1968,69. It is clear as day his voice changed after that. The drug abuse was certainly a factor. Having said that his voice was still great. I love his version of "What now my love" simply awesome
Elvis‘s voice is singular and entirely human… Like a fingerprint that we all fall in love with for some reason because we’re all dialed in to that beauty!
So Elvis was as wonderful as everyone thought? When I was small I used to steal my Uncles records of Elvis. I grew up loving him. He was born the same year as my Mother and they died weeks apart. Elvis is one way I connect with her. Thank you.
Now you get a better understanding of why you can't escape your emotions when listening to Elvis. His seemingly crazy almost out of tune vibrato that sits on top of almost pitch perfect and his expertize on fraising (spelling?) Each word is out of this world. A true master!
You Sir, know your Elvis. Regarding frasing and pitching I think Elvis might be the the greatest artist ever. To understand him though, gospel music is the only way.

I agree with you 100%! The idea that some anonymous person would dare to put AutoTune on Elvis--- or any other great singer of the past---- infuriates me. Would they do this to the Beatles or the Beach Boys? The Four Freshmen? Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan? Maria Callas and Luciano Pavarotti? I could go on all day with the most fantastic and wonderful singers in music history, whose fame and worldwide popularity is based on the totally pure sound of their natural human voices. If they do this without telling people, then it's nothing less than a criminal fraud.
Man, that scared me! 😱 It would be a crime against humanity. But Elvis was "John Henry": man against the machine. And he'll win every time. It's gospel singing. *Great* gospel singing. A computer can't do that. It can't communicate raw emotion. Raw, gentle, caressing . . . sublime.
Elvis is an always will be amazing. He will always be the greatest. He is a once in a lifetime experience that we all get to see his voice was magical, almost like it can hypnotize you. It was beautiful just like he was
Interesting. Funny that I never noticed the extent to which the "Elvis sound" is really the wide vibrato. There are clearly other mannerisms to it as well, but the vibrato was a huge part of it.
Came across your video by accident, I'm a massive Elvis Fan, and so happy to hear you acknowledge that his range was massive and auto tune proof. The fact his music is still selling 40 years after he passed, and more young people are loving his music, ....well that Speaks for itself.....sounds like companies trying to cash in on a quick buck.
Fil, this was the absolute best auto tune review yet. I was fortunate enough to see Elvis in 74 and 75. I was very young, but still remember the commanding audience he had. He really did have a gifted voice. Thanks so much for all the work you put into these videos! You’re viewers enjoy them.
@Cajunomics in 73 it was the coliseum in Phoenix Arizona and in 75 it was on the ASU Campus Tempe Arizona the one in Tempe have better sound because it was made for sympathies and stuff so it sounded very good

He took a very beautiful toned voice to places that surprised the listener and left you wondering what just happened and how did he do that. Truly a master. Vicki
Well said Vicki. I totally agree. Elvis is The VOICE! 👍
Can you do that with Bob Joyce?
I listened to Elvis since the day I was born... And then when we went home, my mother would make me play records of someone that sounded just like him on the Hi-Fi stereo! 🤭 Not only did she have every single record, but I could pick the record that had a particular song that she wanted to hear and was only 3 years old! I learned to read English by playing (mostly) Elvis records. Of course the first tape I bought was Elvis and I have purchased every tape and CD ever recorded by Elvis. The only artist that makes me cry in almost every song. 😭 P.S. my mother was one of his Cooks and housekeepers.
What a crazy time to be alive when rock n roll was unleashed to the public. I wish I could have experienced it.
I knew it...his voice is perfect 😆 No one will ever match that voice. The best there ever was
I suppose auto tune and the like are what I hear in today's music, which I don't particularly enjoy. Even the lyrics are meaningless. Elvis' talent is rare these days, if it exists at all.
Hey Steve 👋
Well, there's k d lang
Elvis breaks all rules and sings like an Angel.

I really appreciate the respect you show Elvis Presley.
Great video Fil!

Auto-tune is for people who can't sing that's my cue can't auto-tune Elvis he sent years perfecting his craft for all the world to enjoy
Yes, I, too, appreciate the respect you show Elvis. Took me a while to see it, but now I do. If you are so smart to be able to take that voice and play with it as you do and keep all the fans happy, you are a smart man. That is a precious voice. Thank you.
His voice has always been my bridge over troubled water. A true gift from God. I miss you Elvis.
It traveled the world until covid, starting in 1997. I saw it about 7 times in different cities.
You made me cry.
Johnny Cash was great also

He came from obscurity. Just another poor boy from the Deep South. Only his voice and looks set him apart. His influence was exactly the same as the folks he grew up with in Tupelo. But that voice was indeed a God given gift.
My Professor for music appreciation class said that Elvis had the widest range of ANY untrained singer. His voice was BEAUTIFUL, especially his gospel.
I agree completely! This is why he hit the jackpot on vocal range, aside from being skilled at playing the piano and guitar!

Elvis’s vibrato is legend. It really is an amazing thing to see a visual of his voice. If they auto tune his voice, they are basically killing Elvis all over again.
Is his vibrato fully natural or did he work on it?
Both, natural but he practiced a lot, there is a video in1972 where he stated that.
Priceless!
Because she was intelligent to know she was hearing the greatest male vocalist that ever lived.
@@sarahholland2600 yes I watched that video... the colonel was a terror! And Elvis was too good a person to fire him.
Elvis Presley’s voice actually outsmarted auto tune!
Barry Young, autotune wasn't invented until the late 90's What's going on here is reverb/echo mode.

@@kennethcurtis1856 Oh , I love the Beatles. Hey Jude was written by John for his son Jullian. I think Elvis did a beautiful job singing it too. There was nothing Elvis couldn't sing. He'd put his own spin on everything. Elvis had a voice no one could or will ever duplicate.

Elvis was to singing like Julius Caesar was to warfare. You can't teach what they had.
When you have that much natural talent, you don't need lessons. Lessons might have been bad for him.
Elvis voice hit multiple frequencies at once
I would like to have Elvis vocal chords analyzed
Elvis would never need auto tune or any type of manipulation of his voice, unlike most of todays singers that utilize auto tune or other studio gimmicks. This man had a God given talent and God made sure that Elvis s voice couldn't be manipulated in the studio. Miss you Elvis
Elvis used his voice like a musical instrument! He was the best!
Hello Julia how are you doing?
This is just brilliant. just confirms what we’ve always known.

A BIG YES👑
Well if his music was auto- turned it was done long Elvis's body was 6 feet under because auto tune didn't exist when Elvis was alive

He never thought he was good. He had no idea just how great he was!
It would be terrible to auto tune the voice that can sing rock, country, blues and gospel with perfection.
What Elvis had could not be taught...or learned...natural perfection.
Afterwards is the marketing marketers & connectors going
for advertising alive from one continent to another. Also I am aware about auto tunes & other electronic devices with vibrato effects , thin or thick tremble voice only that helps only but if the singer goes *off key* then the equipment can't help.

Elvis's chameleon voice changed multiple times in his very very short life and career.
Listen to the HUGE Difference between his voice on this song and his sun studio sessions in 54'.
The studio recording of "it's now or never" 1960. "Can't help falling in love" 1961.
Hound dog, 1956.
In the ghetto, 1969.
"Shake rattle and roll" 1955, "tomorrow is a long time" 1966.

It literally changed multiple times in his very very short career. Truly remarkable.
Love their version too especially as they wrote it both great
@@jamesadcock5235 Paul Simon was the songwriter, and Art Garfunkel only provided vocals.
After this video, I think I fell in love with Elvis all over again.
He was so underrated as a vocalist because of his larger than life persona and sexual magnetism that blasted on the scene during an era that was ready to explode with that energy. He had a magnificent voice that's finally being appreciated. Great vid!
His voice ñ talent was ãlways recognised & ãppreciated by his fans, the King was never underrated 👑⚡🌟
@@Shelley550 True, but I wasn't referring to his fans.

With all the talent that Elvis displayed during copious live performances, how could anyone dare to even suggest that he could ever have been auto tuned?
EP never needed auto tune- he was just that pure of voice. There are plenty of singers that should NEVER be touched by a computer. Elvis is one.

Elvis' vocal ability changed quite dramatically from his 50's, 60's to 70's.
Yes his time in Vegas was a huge factor on his voice changing. Listen to him in 1969 and compare to 1971. Obvious change. I could go on all day with the most fantastic and wonderful singers in music history, whose fame and worldwide popularity is based on the totally pure sound of their natural human voices. If they do this without telling people, then it's nothing less than a criminal fraud.
I just discovered The Four Freshmen this year on the Christmas stations - incredible!
Agreed. Absolutely criminal.
Totally agree!
I imagine that this is 1) why Elvis voice was SO unique and 2) why he is so hard to impersonate and 3) why you ALWAYS know when it's Elvis singing ❤
It was beautiful just like he was
Nicely done. Elvis was king for a reason the voice was pure gold.
Interesting. Funny that I never noticed the extent to which the "Elvis sound" is really the wide vibrato. There are clearly other mannerisms to it as well, but the vibrato was a huge part of it.
Especially in his later days. His early vibrato was quite contained on the ballads.
And impersonators try to copy it but usually end up sounding ridiculous.
I listen to everything after 1969 live.. he definitely got better with age
This analysis really opened my mind to how special Elvis was. I’ve loved his music… now I understand why.
I have learned alot from Fil’s channel. Thank you Fil!
Gosh, I miss him. I love your analysis. ♥️
Hello Tina how are you doing?
My gods, this is incredible. A truly gifted, gifted man.
The more and more I hear your explanations of auto- tune, the more and more I loathe it (I already hate it as a singer anyways)!
Thank you for this detailed explanation and for the information you have passed on to us.
Elvis was a natural. His voice was God-given!
Fil. You are a wizard. You're virtually the Gandalf of music interpretation and analysis.
Thank you so much. There is nothing more valuable than a great teacher. You are a great teacher!
Fil, this was the absolute best auto tune review yet. I was fortunate enough to see Elvis in 74 and 75. I was very young, but still remember the commanding audience he had. He really did have a gifted voice. Thanks so much for all the work you put into these videos! You’re viewers enjoy them.
I saw him in 73 and 77
Absolutely the voice in history.
@Cajunomics in 73 it was the coliseum in Phoenix Arizona and in 75 it was on the ASU Campus Tempe Arizona the one in Tempe have better sound because it was made for sympathies and stuff so it sounded very good
That was an impressive explanation that even someone like me with great appreciation, but no talent, for music could understand. I already knew E’s voice was a little piece of Heaven on Earth, but now I understand a little pice of WHY. I pray no one ever tries to “improve” his recordings.
You always without fail provide an excellent musical education. Elvis was definitely a great singer. Thank you Fil✌🏼💙🎶🎶
