      The studio recording of "it's now or never" 1961, and. Suspicious minds, 1969.
      1961's. "Can't help falling in love" 1956's. Hound dog, etc...

    I have listened to his voice from the beginning of his career to the end. No artist played their instrument like he did. It was uncanny the nuances, tone, range, power and all around play he could display through different stages in his life. He said one time, " I don't have a good voice, I just know what to do with it". He was only half right. He took a very beautiful toned voice to places that surprised the listener and left you wondering what just happened and how did he do that. Truly a master. Vicki

I learned to read English by playing (mostly) Elvis records. Of course the first tape I bought was Elvis and I have purchased every tape and CD ever recorded by Elvis. The Colonel had him doing 7 shows a week to pay the Colonels massive gambling debt , when he had glaucoma, a painful genetic bowel condition & a prescription pill addiction. If you read the 3 bodyguard's book Elvis: What Happened, there's an awful scene where his Dr was trying to rouse a semi conscious Elvis with ice water & the Colonel just barks "get him on stage"& leaves the room with not a shred of concern.

    Rolling Stone reports Simon later heard Elvis’ “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” He felt the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s interpretation of the track was dramatic. “But so was the song,” he added. “When I first heard Elvis perform ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ it was unbelievable. I thought to myself, ‘How the hell can I compete with that?'”

    • @Deborahtunes
      @Deborahtunes 2 года назад +31

      Elvis's voice is naturally dramatic. So performing a song like this, makes the song more powerful than it was before. I like both versions. Presley's voice though, brings it to another level for me...

    • @Galantski
      @Galantski 2 года назад +17

      Vocally, Simon couldn't compete with Presley, however, fortunately, Garfunkel was the main singer on the S&G single, and even better, the _only_ singer on the live video Fil recently posted. This is the first I heard Elvis's version, and, yes, I can see where Paul might say something along those lines, though I would also point out that he and Art had a major falling out, and they never have totally reconciled, so I don't know how much of his praise of the King's rendition is genuine and how much a subtle jab at Garfunkel.
      It doesn't matter which it is, because Elvis's is a truly great performance. As far as I'm concerned, Art's solo is my go-to version, and I think he more or less "owns" the song, though that may be much an associative response than anything. Maybe say he and Elvis are co-owners. It's instructive to note that Presley's arrangement is more or less identical with Simon & Garfunkel's, and that makes a lot of sense given that it is a Gospel styling, and Elvis was steeped in Gospel as much as he was R&B.

      @@MBrady1970 Yes he was underrated as a vocalist; no, not by his fans and peers in the music industry, but by the media and institutions like the Recording Academy et al. How many Grammys did Elvis win? Answer: One, for his "How Great Thou Art" gospel album! And therein lies the reason, considering the times. Elvis was not respected as an 'artist or vocalist' by the 'establishments'. Sure, his fans adored him and bought his records by the millions, and sure, his fellow artists knew and appreciated his immense vocal talent, but he didn't get those props from the media, some radio stations, parents, the religious communities, and the Recording Industry. Elvis was first and foremost to them a problem to society; his vocal ability was the last thing they saw or heard. While Sinatra was being dubbed with nicknames like "The Voice," Elvis was dubbed "The Pelvis." That's one of the reasons he appeared on Sinatra's show, to try and change that image and gain respect as a vocalist and artist. So you can say that my statement that "Elvis was underrated as a vocalist" is "ridiculous" all you want, but it's a fact! And I lived through those times to know.

    True talent and straight up had his own way of singing. I used to not really like his style but as I've gotten older I truly love his sound!

    So Elvis was as wonderful as everyone thought? When I was small I used to steal my Uncles records of Elvis. I grew up loving him. He was born the same year as my Mother and they died weeks apart. Elvis is one way I connect with her. Thank you.

    His voice separated out is fantastic!
    His voice doesn't just have a virbrato, it has a quality of bringing in another dimention, possibly from heaven.

    Now you get a better understanding of why you can't escape your emotions when listening to Elvis. His seemingly crazy almost out of tune vibrato that sits on top of almost pitch perfect and his expertize on fraising (spelling?) Each word is out of this world. A true master!

      You Sir, know your Elvis. Regarding frasing and pitching I think Elvis might be the the greatest artist ever. To understand him though, gospel music is the only way.

    Just awesome, Which ever song he sang turned into gold. Here is what Paul Simon said when he heard Elvis sing Bridge over troubled water (When I first heard Elvis perform ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ it was unbelievable. I thought to myself, ‘How the hell can I compete with that?)

    I agree with you 100%! The idea that some anonymous person would dare to put AutoTune on Elvis--- or any other great singer of the past---- infuriates me. Would they do this to the Beatles or the Beach Boys? The Four Freshmen? Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan? Maria Callas and Luciano Pavarotti? I could go on all day with the most fantastic and wonderful singers in music history, whose fame and worldwide popularity is based on the totally pure sound of their natural human voices. If they do this without telling people, then it's nothing less than a criminal fraud.

    Man, that scared me! 😱 It would be a crime against humanity.
    But Elvis was "John Henry": man against the machine. And he'll win every time.
    It's gospel singing. *Great* gospel singing. A computer can't do that. It can't communicate raw emotion. Raw, gentle, caressing . . . sublime.

    Interesting. Funny that I never noticed the extent to which the "Elvis sound" is really the wide vibrato. There are clearly other mannerisms to it as well, but the vibrato was a huge part of it.

    • @genebrenner855
      @genebrenner855 2 года назад +8

      Especially in his later days. His early vibrato was quite contained on the ballads.

    Came across your video by accident, I'm a massive Elvis Fan, and so happy to hear you acknowledge that his range was massive and auto tune proof. The fact his music is still selling 40 years after he passed, and more young people are loving his music, ....well that Speaks for itself.....sounds like companies trying to cash in on a quick buck.

    That was an impressive explanation that even someone like me with great appreciation, but no talent, for music could understand. I already knew E’s voice was a little piece of Heaven on Earth, but now I understand a little pice of WHY. I pray no one ever tries to “improve” his recordings.
