  • Frequent exposure to cold is linked to a number of different health benefits. Scientists have found evidence that exposure to cold speeds up metabolism, and reduces inflammation, swelling, and sore muscles. Many athletes use ice baths and other types of exposure to cold as a means to speed up recovery after physical exercise. Cold body therapy is also linked to improved quality of sleep, more focus, and even to an improved immune response.
On this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I was happy to sit down and talk with Wim Hof about the benefits of cold therapy and what happens to our body when we’re exposed to extreme cold conditions. Wim shares how we can change our biochemistry through our breathing, and the boundless capacities of the human spirit when we test our physical limits.
Wim Hof, also known as “The Iceman,” holds multiple world records for his feats of endurance and exposure to cold, and he is the author of The Wim Hof Method: Activate Your Full Human Potential. The benefits of Wim’s method, now practiced by tens of thousands, have been validated by eight university research studies. He has been featured on goop Lab’s six-part Netflix series, the BBC, VICE Media, and the Discovery Channel, as well as in the bestselling book, What Doesn’t Kill Us by Scott Carney.

Since April I have been swimming in our local Scottish Loch (Insh) and it was cold to start then warmed through the summer...it's cooling rapidly now and I monitor it a few times a week(with a fish tank thermometer and 1m probe) and it's now 8c/46F...Taking a cold shower is a poor substitute as the water from that is 10.3c/50F !!!... This loch will freeze, people play "curling" on it if it gets that cold!!

    Hello Doctor Mark!
I’ll get straight to it but I’m not even sure you read these comments.. I have something in my blood that causes me to break into hives when I’m exposed to cold temperatures.. they look like mosquito bites and itch. According to Cleveland clinic and rare diseases it’s called ‘cold urticaria’ is this something curable? I have been trying the cold showers in the mornings and have definitely noticed it’s advantages and benefits but I’m afraid that’s as cold exposure as I’ll get.. being that I was told I could die if I ever experience serious big reaction to cold... I wish I knew more about this disease.. thank you for all your work Doc!

I can believe it because I sleep better when it's cold in the room versus being too hot.when I am too hot it is hard for me to sleep. That's why I don't turn the heat on at night.when I am very cozy I can easily fall asleep vs being too warm. When I am thirsty or starving for water I have to drink ice cold water to satisfy my thirst.I can only drink room temperature water when I am not thirsty or just a little thirsty.I crave ice water in summer months and hot drinks in winter months.but when the heat on too high or when I moving around working, that when I crave cold drinks because moving around doing things create heat.Epecially when I give a patient a shower because steam plus steaming humidity from the shower produces heat thus leaves me to ice water.

I am allergic to the cold. I lived in Detroit Michigan and broke into hives daily from short exposure to cold weather... I was told it’s a gene in my blood that makes me allergic. The hives itch and get red and look like mosquito bites. It’s the worse.. I was told I could die from this.. I wish I knew more about why this happens to me.. nevertheless I live in south Florida now and just recently started doing cold showers after coming back from my morning runs.. it does feels good!

Drat. I like HOT showers and baths and loathe the cold shot when I don't get to the diverter valve faster enough.
I practice and preach mind over matter all the time but a cold or ice bath makes me freak just thinking about it. If I force myself to do a cold bath I'll report back.

Try d-limonene, which comes from citrus peel, for reflux. Read about it on fixyourgut.com. I had silent acid reflux for 10 years which caused SIBO (berberine has worked wonders for this). The SIBO in turn aggravated an autoimmune condition (psoriasis). I am finally healing with a combo of d-limonene (500 mg 2x day), berberine (500 mg 2x day), vitamin C (1.5 g 3x day), broccoli and mustard seeds (1/2 TSP of each ground in a coffee/spice grinder 3x day), a starch-free diet high in vegetables and salmon and finally breathwork. Wish you a speedy recovery 😊

I have heard acid reflux is due to, paradoxically, too little stomach acid as we get older: proper amount of acid triggers the top of stomach to close, not enough leaves it open. A recommended solution is to drink some apple cider vinegar in water before eating. I don't have the problem though, so cannot be certain it works.

I have used peppermint tea for any type of heartburn, reflux. I had a very bad reaction to aspirin. The MD didn't read my chart, allergic to baby aspirin, put me on 650 mg of aspirin for pain. I ended up with 4 ulcers, as big as a quarter in my stomach, one was next to the flap, hernia, it wasn't closing, reflux. MD advised me that I would need surgery. Surgery was outpatient, about 45 minutes. but would need surgery in 10 years again for the ulcers. it's 25 years and no problems. I was back to eating everything within a couple weeks,
I stay healthy with vitamins. over 80 NO prescription drugs or vaccines. The last vaccine was a flu shot, in 1976, and almost died, allergic to shots. D3, K2,
C, zinc, iron, magnesium, B-12, potassium, lutein, multi-vitamins,. I am BLESSED Exercise too.
