I've already commented on this, just wanted to add: This cover takes on an entirely different meaning than the original. Coldplay's original is a declaration of love. Sara's is almost like a plea; a confession. She seems to be saying "I love you, I bleed for you, love me too". It's heart-wrenching. So wonderful.
Paul Nye I mean, does she sound particularly exultant or joyous in this song? Expressing a love that’s passed, or troubled, or unrequited and yearned for can be felt as a sadness.
Coldplay is my favorite band. I love them. Own every song they've ever recorded and all live albums. I don't consider this to be someone trying to make something "better." Sara is just adding something to the song like the artist that she is. There is something heartbreaking in this version; something raw and beautiful. I love this. I love it so much. Its respect any time someone covers someone else's songs. She is doing nothing but tipping the cap to Chris and Coldplay.
The fact that she can play such a simple piano chord(s) throughout the whole song and make it that emotional is a testament to both the song and her artist talent.
Both this rendition and Coldplay's deserve too much respect, there is no need to compare. Hats off to Coldplay for giving us a beautiful song, and to Sara for giving us an equally beautiful rendition.
Is there anything this woman cannot do musically? Thankyou Sara for making me want to carry on...your music makes the world a better place! #1fan from San Diego
This song came out the year my aunt died. We were so close. I remember listening to it late at night as I drove home from the hospice. This version really gets the emotion of that summer.
Sara is FANTASTIC! ... I just wish she did more covers like this and Yellow Brick Road. I love this whole cover start to finish, but at 1:50 where the "I love you soooooo" comes in just sends chills up/down my arms ... what a voice!!
+imapumpkin1 Thanks, I hope you listened to it on more than just laptop speakers. You HAVE to hear her do this and Yellow Brick Road cranked in surround to truly appreciate how beautiful her voice really is. I could listen to her all day, but the only problem is she doesn't do enough covers, I like some of her own songs but not crazy about all of them. Happy Easter!
When an artist covers a song, they reinterpret it and make it their own. Often, it doesn't end up sounding as good as the original. But Sara was able to take a beautiful, amazing song and play it in a totally different way that is somehow still just as beautifully emotional. One of my favorite covers of any song, ever.
“To make a song your own” is the greatest feat an artist could achieve with a cover. I couldn’t think of anyone that does this better than Sara. She is so dynamic in terms of both energy and complexity, and her compositional choices are always spot-on. As an aspiring musician, I feel she is a great reminder to never become complacent with my level of accomplishment. There is always space for improvement, we are capable of such remarkable things.
Included this version of "Yellow" in my wedding procession! I love Coldplay's original, and this version just made it more romantic for me. I've been waiting years for her to record this!
She is soul singing , the lyrics are touching her soul at this point in her life as music is meant to do.we are privileged that she is willing to be this raw and record it for us.I felt like this after 20 yrs with someone but the fact that she shares those emotions with the world wow.
i love how she rearranged it, she's not just an incredible vocalist and songwriter, her knowledge and application of music theory are there, too, she took this song and made it a completely new and different song without making it unrecognizable or changing a word... i love her interpretation of this...
Loved this cover! Bc it's a completely different perspective from the original Coldplay song. She makes it completely different, although the Coldplay version is perfect this one is too. It's magnificent how she can make it sound so different yet amazing. Coldplay and Sara should do a duet
Oh I see... when I first read your comment I thought you were saying that she changed key during the presentation of song. She did not, but I think you are saying that the key in which she is presenting the song here is a different key then the one recorded by Coldplay...
I broke up with my fiance the day before yesterday, and had to tell him never to contact me again yesterday... I didn't cry about it - I felt good about it! He was emotionally abusive. I just listened to this song and all of the sudden I started crying harder than I have in over 6 years.
There is something so emotionally cathartic about Sara's version of this--I'm not surprised you cried. Hopefully it was good for you and will help you move forward.
There is a song about crying. By Don Maclean. But Sara's version can make you cry even if you don't have an abused past. There is something in her voice that simply melts the soul and triggers a connection to emotions buried in our eyes.
I've listened to a lot of music. That is one of the best covers I have ever heard. She made one of the most famous songs of the last 20 years completely her own. And I only know one Sara bareilles song. That's gonna have to change.
Checkout her cover of Chandelier by Sia (find a live recording). Once Upon Another Time, Satellite Call, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Elton John cover), Between the Lines, and Gravity (if you haven't heard that one). She has a beautiful way of making songs her own and I love the stories she tells as a songwriter.
Sara B's originals from her first 3 albums are amazing, but in general i do not care for her interpretations of covers. If you look around RUclips you'll find that she has butchered quite a few classics. Most notably Yellow Brick Road by Elton John.
@@willritter4076 Going to have to disagree with that one! Her cover of goodbye yellow brick road is the best cover of any song I have heard, ever. Every few months I'll go back and watch it, and get chills every time. If you're a fan of the original, then it's a bit different. But imo it's perfect.
I have listened to this song since I was in highschool. It was there for me in treatment after I tried to commit suicide. It portrayed my pain when I cried in bed after my family members did scary things to me. It gave me comfort when I left my childhood home and gave me rest on nights when my mind was torn apart by nightmares of the past. It was a friend when I spent lonely nights in different foster homes. The amount of love and pain in this song will stick with me for the rest of my life. Thank you Sara, for getting me through everything with just a melody.
Sara is the best! Her music has been with me in every stage of my life-giving me hope and faith that we are here for a reason...iam her number 1 fan and when she hit broadway, she hit it out of the park THANKYOU SARA for EVERYTHING you do!
I Love Sara's Coldplay cover version of this song. She takes it to a whole new level and even though Video is poor..her voice is amazing, which is usual:)
She's talking about the tastes of today's audiences. Today, people like the fast food version of music; the mass-produced, flashy stuff created specifically for the lowest common denominator. The music of people like Taylor Swift and Katy Perry get all the attention, and while they are good in their own right, lack the passion and lyrical genius of songs by Sara Barielles. Such songs are cast by the wayside by today's audiences, as evidenced by the fact that Sara has been flying under the radar of recognition for over a decade.
Mostly agree, and I do think Sara B may be the most talented singer/songwriter (and "cover-er") of her generation. I do think Taylor Swift has shown that she can write lyrics with some depth, and she does have a knack for cranking out one hit after another. Katy Perry? all flash and hype, and no depth...whatsoever.
I don't understand how people can NOT like this. It's her own interpretation of an amazing song and she sounds incredible! She's amazing, just plain amazing.

I've already commented on this, just wanted to add:

agree, 1000%. She, as cheesy as it sounds, "made it her own"; in the truest sense of the word.
To me Coldplay’s is a song about being in love and Sara’s is about mourning a love. Personally.
very well put
The original is catchy, but this cover is completely heartbreaking.
Paul Nye the piano accompaniment and the singing? How does the song make you feel?
Paul Nye I mean, does she sound particularly exultant or joyous in this song? Expressing a love that’s passed, or troubled, or unrequited and yearned for can be felt as a sadness.

I agree 100%! She puts something so very precious into every cover she does. More of an interpretation than a cover really.
YES 100% AGREE this gives me shivers
I wonder if she knows how amazingly talented she is?
Chris wouldn't mind. He said "it" can be whatever you'd like, when it comes to music (when James Corden messed up the lyrics to Viva la Vida).
The fact that she can play such a simple piano chord(s) throughout the whole song and make it that emotional is a testament to both the song and her artist talent.
bc her voice is truly her instrument ;)
She needs to record this, man. I want to listen to it all the time for the rest of my life.
I assure you, all of her covers are this good or better.
2023 and I'm still here. This version is just so perfect
Both this rendition and Coldplay's deserve too much respect, there is no need to compare. Hats off to Coldplay for giving us a beautiful song, and to Sara for giving us an equally beautiful rendition.

Love when she throws her head back, closes her eyes and just lets go--like a wolf howling at the moon--feels like a force of nature.
She plays about 3 basic chords and captures an audiences complete attention for 5 minutes...Now that's talent.
you dont need fancy chords!!
yeah nah, i just learnt the chords, there's 16 of them @@piglet2548
Because her voice is the most beautiful instrument…a veritable orchestra.
This song came out the year my aunt died. We were so close. I remember listening to it late at night as I drove home from the hospice. This version really gets the emotion of that summer.
This is the only version i ever want

Check out her cover of the Otis Redding soul classic, (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay! She does a terrific job on that one too!
Thanks! ... never saw that one and just watched a couple different versions. Very good!
I rarely have tears spring from my eyes unexpectedly. That one got me.
I almost felt like I shouldn’t be watching someone this emotionally open and raw without hugging them

I can't help but fall in love with her. She's definitely the most talented person I've ever seen or heard.

You just made my day. Thanks.

she should do a cover album!!
Yes! Like the Shawn Colvin covergirl album!
two years later and still hauntingly beautiful.
9 years later and it's still hauntingly beautiful
This is where my heart is at right now, and I feel like I'll never come back from it.
+TheBethanyFae Did you come back?
+Jessica616ify no, she dead.....:(
I am fine! Life took a really hopeful, positive turn after this. Thank you for asking though!
Neither will I.
Oh you’ll come back, better than ever before.
i love how she rearranged it, she's not just an incredible vocalist and songwriter, her knowledge and application of music theory are there, too, she took this song and made it a completely new and different song without making it unrecognizable or changing a word... i love her interpretation of this...
The emotion that she portrays through her voice is insane. Hands down my favorite female vocalist!
You can feel what she felt when she sang this. I'm in love with it.
Damn. It has been years since I last saw this. I’m glad I was able to revisit it again.

God, isn't that the truth; the understated truth.
She just left her soul on the stage...fearless & vulnerable. 💘
That's the whole point--the repetition of the chords builds incredible tension--that her voice eventually frees us from.
for years I've been listening to this more than the original

for EVERYTHING
you do!
This woman is just brilliant! We are lucky to have her, and that her family gave her a safe place to be so brilliant!
Play the Coldplay version when your relationship could not be better.
Play this version when you have to say goodbye to the love of your life.
Linda Ronstadt, Diana Ross, and now, Sara Bareilles. AMAZING!
is that the ocean o no wait it's my tears
HAHAHAHAHA. So cute
Is that a storm? No wait, it's my emotions.
this is a piece of art
I love this song, I appreciate her songs and her voice in general, this version is just too beautiful. I definitely wish I had discovered it sooner.
3 seconds and this woman is making me cry
oh lord
Most moving rendition I have ever heard. Brilliant!
Coldplay is my favorite band, but i honestly like her version better
That is what "cover" means. She maded it herself.
This makes me sad and happy at the same time.
I've never seen this cover before! Incredible. All the feels. Great random RUclips suggestion for a Monday.
I love Coldplay. But this Sara's version... Omg... 2020 and I'm still crying every time I hear this. Is so heartbreaking... so painful
I Love Sara's Coldplay cover version of this song. She takes it to a whole new level and even though Video is poor..her voice is amazing, which is usual:)
Sara always gives me the feels. She's definitely one of the best
I feel this to my core. She is a true artist in every sense of the word.
Damn ! Ive heard a many of versions of this song, but I'll never forget your voice
I can't even begin to explain the feels.
Look at the stars? Look this star! What beautiful and great presentation... I'm in love. So, please, continue singing ;D
And this is the kind of music that sadly people don´t apreciate anymore...
We do! :)

"I swam across, I jumped across for you"
The way Miss Bareilles sings those lines at the 2:22 mark.... just WOW. I could listen to that all day.
Sara Bareilles is a wonderfull woman. What for a voice.
Love Greetings from Germany
*Hits play. Immediately starts sobbing--*
I love her rendition even more than the original

Oh man.... 3:12. That Sara sound! I just cant
Thank you for making this your very Own! Beautiful
Really love this version.
this is the best cover of this song
Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And everything you do,
Yeah they were all yellow,
I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things you do
And it was called yellow
So then I took my turn
Oh what a thing to have done
And it was all yellow
Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
You know you know I love you so
You know I love you so
I swam across
I jumped across for you
Oh what a thing to do
Cause you were all yellow
I drew a line
I drew a line for you
Oh what a thing to do
And it was all yellow
Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
You know for you I'd bleed myself dry
For you I'd bleed myself dry
It's true look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for...
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine
Look at the stars look how they shine for you
And all the things that you do
This cover is just gorgeous...
Sara's voice is otherworldly...
i always wonder how she can make such a big 'noise', such a great music with her single piano and her voice... i love her!!!
Everything she sings she sings with such heart such soul
im an all time coldplay fan....and an all time sara fan. i never thought it was possible to turn yellow into something like this..............
the original touched me and so did this............thank you both for this beautiful song
her voice is so beautiful. This is one of the most amazing covers I've ever heard. Sara is so underrated.. she deserves a lot more attention and recognition than what she's actually getting.
Sara is absolutely inspirational, a beautiful soul with an overwhelming talent!!! I adore hsr!!!
the original and the acoustic version from Coldplay are amazing. I really love the song. But this is a super cover. I had goosebumps the whole time. The first time I heard it, it was live in the HMH and I loved it. Almost cried ;-)
simply divine!!!!
She makes me wish that I could play the piano. She is AMAZING! What's better than that she seems REAL.
this is one of my fave song and how she owns it gives justice to the song. .
This is such a masterpiece!!! Thank you for making a cover of this Sara!
When I die.. can you please sing this at my funeral?
i would
Northstar_004 yep. You still alive?

I absolutely love Sara, her voice is just so beautiful and refreshing.
The girl is gorgeous. The voice is golden.
GOOSEBUMPS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
