  • Brig. Gen. (res.) Erez David Maisel joins Andrew to provide a crash-course in Israeli Intelligence history. Erez formerly served as Brigadier General and Director of the Israel Defense Forces International Cooperation Unit. Currently, he is an associate researcher in the Military History Department of the IDF, focusing on Cross-Boundary Defense and Public Crisis Engagement in conflict zones.
Erez is an alumni of the University of Haifa, which sits atop the northeastern slope of Israel’s Mount Caramel mountain rage. On the western side of the range, you can find the The Nahal Me’arot / Wadi el-Mughara Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that documents over 500,000 years of the history human evolution.
This episode is the first in our 5-part SpyCast series on Israeli Intelligence. In this month-long series, SpyCast takes a deep dive into the ins and outs of intelligence and espionage in Israel - its intricate history, agencies, major successes and failures, and current state.
The events unfolding this week are tragic and historic in their timing - coming almost 50 years to the day after the Yom Kippur War. The Spy Museum has an educational mission and we work hard to provide historic context and understanding for what happens in the world.

Thank you for this Brig. Gen. Erez & Dr. Andrew, really fascinating ! I confess to .. not precisely being ignorant of the situation in Israel/Palestine but ..probably worse ..to accepting a popular and superficial narrative which i am now learning is very different, in fact almost the opposite to the reality , this interview has contributed to enlightening my understanding, thanks !

So my big question is why and how are we compatible with mig's coming from Egypt when we have air bases there. Alice like going back to the 60s and the 7 Days war and I'm just assuming this point that things are different between Israel and Egypt and this is more than likely missing information interweb that anyway very interesting 🤔 thanks for keeping me updated. This is like a Tokyo Rose Warehouse no offense to panic or how f****** delicately do we have to handle this

If I recall correctly Israel knew internal deliberations of old Soviet parliament.
At a time of existential crisis for the Jewish state there must be a scramble to fix current security deficits, where high tech has stumbled allowing murdering terrorists to breach the barrier from Gaza.

I am not a trained spy. What I do is call the police to report crime. Those folks that don't want to be incarcerated for their crimes would like me to leave Seattle because they don't want me telling the police about them. If I were a spy, I would have done a better job of intelligence collection. If I were a spy, the agencies would be paying me an income. If I were a spy, I would have a spy handler to report to.

How do YOU suggest liberating the oppressed Palestinian people? I’ve worked in the region for decades and don’t see a path for them unless they become citizens of sympathetic Arab states who don’t want them! Not Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Yemen, UAE and Gulf States, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, or the non-Arab Moslem states of Iran, Pakistan, Kosovo, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Eritrea… and certainly state with large non-Arab minority populations like India, Philippines, Russia,,China,,and Singapore.
