Cleaning Project C1's engine bay

  • In this video, I’m cleaning the engine bay. I’m still waiting on parts to arrive for some other modifications I’ve got in the pipe line, so I’m filling some time. I’ve wanted to do this for quite some time because I’ve never actually done this before. I’ve had to do some research on this to see how other people have managed to clean their engine bays and I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m cleaning my engine bay, not detailing it!
I’ve decided to not use my jet wash for this, I’m using low pressure water instead. Though it would probably be fine if I did, I’m not risking putting pressurised water on the engine bay in case water found its way into things like the fuse box, plugs etc. I’m using some traffic film remover to degrease the engine and bay, followed by some shampoo to really get into all the grease and grime. I’m using Tropic by The Detail Kitchen (where you can use code ‘aygojoe’ for 10% off). It’s a brilliant product that’s safe for vinyl wraps and stickers and for every sale, 20% of it goes towards cleaning up the oceans of plastic, which I’m absolutely all for! Once that’s all cleaned and rinsed, I used Auto Glym’s Vinyl & Rubber care. I used an air line to blast away most of the surface water and then sprayed this onto the engine and the walls of the engine bay while it was still wet and allowed it to dry. Once it was dry, I used an old microfibre cloth to buff it to a shine and it looks awesome!

Great video, Thanks. I like the idea of the quick fixing for the front bumper. Which one of your great videos is it in please. Keep them coming.

I didn’t actually record that. I was trying to wiggle the bumper onto the bracket clips and had enough of it not working, so I removed them and drilled the holes for the quick release fasteners.
I’ve got another bumper to put on soon, so I’ll record the process and make a video out of it. That’ll likely be in the summer, when the weather behaves and allows me to do some painting.

That’s getting changed out for a new one, it was missed on purpose. No point in cleaning something that’s shortly to go in the recycling bin.

Nice job, juste cleaned the airbox this week of m'y girlfriend's C1, already looks a lot better under the good. I'm gonna clean a bit more but wirhout running water and apply a bit of rust protection on the rusty bolts to protect them and give an overall better look :)
Why did you change the engine ?

    • @DABDIY
      @DABDIY  2 года назад +1

The engine was changed because it went knackered. Lost about 80-100 psi on cylinders 2 and 3. It worked out cheaper and easier to change engines, rather than rebuild the existing one.

@@DABDIY these engines and 3 cylinders in general are subject to cylinders ovalisation because of the natural unbalance compared to 4 cylinders, the symptoms are compressions loss and oil consumption. From now on i will change oil very frequently on this engine, less than 10k between oil change and use 5w40 only for good cold temperature protection and good viscosity at normal temperature.

I opened up the engine once I’d taken it out. The problem was that the top end was covered in carbon and would need a full top end rebuild. As I said, cheaper and easier to throw a new engine in instead.

@@DABDIY you mean the inside of the valve cover or the engine head (where the valve seats ) ?
In my engine i can see some type of "black soft stuff" inside the engine cover (through the oil cap filler). I wanted to buy a valve cover gasket to clean that and see what's going on. I heard cleaning the PCV was recommended on this engine too. Thanks for the infos !

Mine was on the head of the engine. A proper top end rebuild would have cost me £200-ish in parts and labor, so I spent £150 on a new engine and made three videos out of it lol.
Yeah, cleaning the PCV valve is a good idea, I did a video on that myself. I also cleaned the MAF sensor, throttle body and control valve while I was at it.

Loving these videos. Are the cigarette lighter sockets in these cars always "on"?

IIRC, they’re 12v switched with the ignition key.

What is the red wire off the positive on the battery for please? Mines snapped 😢

That is the power supply for my daytime running lights. Mine are after market, that red wire is not part of the OEM wiring loom.

      I missed a lot 🤣
Irrelevant really, it’s had a new engine since this video was recorded. The whole engine bay got jet washed while it was empty.
