- On 2009-03-29, the day that the clocks went forward to British Summer Time, Something for the Weekend falls off air at exactly 11am (the show runs from 10am - 11:30am). Did someone forget to change the satellite booking?

if you listen real close, you can actually hear the bbc engineers arguing in the background
Really?
Might actually just be the control room background noise.
OK from what has been suggested already plus some guess work I think I see what happened here. The BBC asks for use of the BT satelitte until 11GMT (12BST but they converted it because BT stay on GMT as proved by the time on the BT card), but when BT dealt with this request (I say request as I don't know exactly how broadcasters book bt satelittes) by giving the beeb the satelitte until 11 but they assumed the beebs time was BST and cut off at 11BST (10GMT).
I agree with you except for the satellite part. The show is most likely sent from the studio it's being shot in to the BBC broadcast control using microwave link, with the BT Tower acting as a relay. Since the signal only has to go across the city instead of one side of the country to the other, using a satellite would be overkill.
@DavidL24 BT Tower switching is automated - hence booking slots
haha love how the announcer almost turned into a radio DJ for that first bit when the music came on :)
Breakdowns are much rarer these days. I remember when I was a kid (early 80s) it used to happen much more frequently.
breakdowns are much more rare because as obviously, the machinery has gotten alot better over the years
7:00 Thanks for rubbing it in, bro.
when he's appologising for the breakdown you can JUST here people panicing in the background
I love that "2". BBC's best ident since 1991
That explains why nobody uses BT.
And the fact that it throws entire channels off air
Cos BT throws channels off air on purpose
Its the most popular phone and broadband system in the country & is used by all the main broadcasters to relay signals.
This has aged horribly considering how frequently I rely on BT
Not enough chocolate. The reciever dosen't think that it's good enough, thus, it won't do anything. So sorry. :3
best breakdown i've seen for quite sometime.
Agreed.
You don't seem to get as any technical breakdowns on TV these days. I miss them sometimes - used to enjoy the music for some unknown reason!
the Music is by Alec Williams and Chieli Minucci of Gotham Music part of the Firstcom Music library.
me too. CN breakdown but it was at night.
On the 21st of April 2019 cbbc broke down
"used to enjoy the music for some unknown reason!"
i mean i cant blame ya
1st breakdown i've seen for ages
Well, that's the advantage with these Window on the World idents, you get something nice to look at while BBC2 try to repair things.
Clean version of the music can be found here: www.universalproductionmusic.com/en-row/search?qtext=big%20world&mode=workgrouping&vtag=1&vwave=1&vdesc=1&ktype=7&fq=albumId:(2046)
@daanbrg Good theory, but when they cut back to Something for the Weekend, they definitely make reference to the fact that they've been off-air, so must be live.
0:35 Is that similar to Channel 4's The Bank Job technical issues from 2012?
Now just why can't the BBC use music like this for their Ceefax closedowns?
Anyone know the music used on this occasion?
UGH, MEH EARDRUMS! THE PAIN!
what are the two breakdown tracks used on this video?
what are the two breakdown tunes on this video?
very very classy indeed
i'd like the bbc to use murray munro's against the clock tune again!
BBC must have stopped using Murray Munro's "Against The Clock" for its breakdown music
When BBC One got a 2002 redesign they stopped using Against the Clock.
What do BBC1 use now
wow those beeps tho time to sample those in a beat in the far future
*me: Aww U fix it*
*Engerneeres: NO WERE WORKING*
*me: WHY ?*
Engerneeres: idk 😐
*me: 3>*
You're fucked in the head
That BT bit was scary- and what's with the adverts as well? How I hate BT.
I think they need to add Iona- Matthew- The Man to the breakdown music playlist, it is used for Imagesound's system breakdown music- watch my video "The instrumental music that plays in lots of shops"
Quite true
i love the music, and did anyone find out what happened and why the BT page came up
Maybe tecnical fails on British Telecom (BT) causes that problem
@DavidL24 I dont think so. BT is used by the BBC (& ITV) to relay signals from studios to the main channel control board. A fault at BT's end caused the signal to be cut off.
the BT tower serves as a relay & must be booked by stations wishing to use it.
given that this was during british summer time, the beeb likely said “hey, we want a slot that goes until 12 noon!” meaning BST (equivalent to UTC+1/GMT+1), but the tower engineers likely booked by UTC - so the feed wouldve been decommissioned an hour earlier than expected
@@toranine09 ahhh makes sense
R.I.P BBC Two 1922-2009 death of a TV fail
Bruh the breakdown happened on the video happened 28 days after my crush Lily was born
@television472tv

In the meantime, here is some music. xD
Oh, BBC breakdown music. Nothing quite like it!

Working
You published this vid the same day as the breakdown. DIDN'T YA?!
Misty Phillips-Queen Yes ma'am.
You reply quickly, DON’T YA!
Misty Phillips-Queen I wouldn't say that, no. Why do you ask?
I just noticed! I didn’t ask you, I NOTICED IT!
Misty Phillips-Queen Sorry Misty. I read DON'T YA! as DON'T YA? My mistake. I hope we won't fall out over this.
I'd like to scoff that chocolate cake they were making.
Same
Don't the BBC have free use of pretty much all music? Why did they pick this new age shit?
Now I think I should put a 2 on my profile face 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
Wow don't fix it
What caused the breakdown
the program was being relayed via the BT Tower, and this was during british summer time (GMT +1). BBC likely requested the slot to go until “11” - assuming that the BT engineers would be going by BST. however, the BT engineers were likely going by GMT/UTC, meaning the slot was actually booked in as going up to 11am UTC, an hour earlier than anticipated. as the slot was no longer in commission, the feed switched to a BT feed.
It's someone's job to just watch BBC 2 all day to report if something's going wrong.
I'm jealous.
blumming BT
You heard him... "In just a few secs"... K...?
About 7 mins later " YES PEOPLE ITS FIXED"
You: err I think I will not watch BT/TV again :'(

Ghost
Well, if you're wondering what's happened to "Something From The Weekend", what the hell is wrong with you?! It's s***!
Good voice over, but shame he has to work over such awful music.
the whole programme is a pile of crap its not suprise that the monitors gave out
ithe amount of crap the bbc put the telly these days they should have more of these interludes since the background music is better then many other sounds the eminit from whiteicity
why does the anouncer have to spoil it by taslking just put a sign up for fucks sake
shame that this could not have happened during the bbcs schophantic coverage of the royal wedding or in views 24 the break up their repetive drip of propoganda
lovely incidental music shame about the recent prograame
They should offer a discount on the following years licence fee
the presenter is anoying repeting the same statment in different ways
