BBC Two Power Failure 2001

- Опубликовано: 5 сен 2024
- The BBC suffered a major power failure around 9.20pm on Saturday 30th June 2001 which knocked all their channels off air. This is part of the breakdown from both analogue and digital BBC Two (spot the different wording and announcers) until they rejoined the programme. Also includes a brief trip around other BBC channels.
09:50 was the most appropriate piece of channelhopping timing EVER.
And it's funny because sky one wasn't working either.
@@moelester7527 Was BBC Two available on terrestrial at the same time or was it on the same screen, I was thinking as this was taken on a Sky Digibox that the Uplinks for BBC 2 and BBC choice could have been faulty. (Just my opinion)
09:50
DOESNT WORK
9:50
Cut back to I Love 1975 and Peter Kay's going, "Do you remember all the power cuts back then?"
“DOESN’T WORK!” I think we know that, Chief! 😂😂
If I saw this on TV, I would dance to the music to pass the time until the power failure was over because the music is so catchy
00:48 you didn't spoil the show but you are spoiling the music, I'm missing my dance
They where saying sorry COS IT WAS A MAJOR POWER CUT THE BBC SAID
Steve Webb I know but was joking because of the music

Quality bit of archived material. Techicnal faults scared me as a kid in the 80's as they used to go on for ages, and even this is a bit spooky!
Crazy how much of a deal something like this was. We experienced a brief power cut this year which affected a few hundred homes around my area and I told my dad "we live in insane times. I won't start panicking until one of my devices needs charging". Lol.
I kinda wish things would go off for a little while, but I guess I could switch them off myself but I just don't have that kinda willpower in 2019.
@@the.internet can you imagine the panic if the power went off? MAJOR MELTDOWN!, 😂😂
@@JennyAnnTea I wonder what Gen Z would do with themselves for sure. I think part of me would enjoy it, sort of how I found enjoyable bits to lockdown 1 last year. (Making food last, getting creative with stuff, applying my time to things that actually need doing as opposed to working around the clock, etc.)
@@the.internet it went down like 3 times for me this year
This happened almost 2 decades ago, but I really feel bad for this announcer. Her voice just oozes stress.
Sadly the music is more entertaining then "I Love 1975"
I quite agree, AwesomeRobloxVideos. The music in this RUclips video is more entertaining. It's about time we put Analogue to rest, once and for all, and try to drive those audio and video memories to the freedom and safety of Digital.
DOESN'T WORK.
9:50 - "It doesn't work!"
"DOESN'T WORK!!"
9:32
Love that second track, it's almost like a poor man's Level 42.
These are times that I don't envy the job of a continuity announcer. Especially in times like these when the problem is fairly large!
I wonder how large a music library the Beeb has for breakdowns? It must be sizeable by this point!
@@TStudiosInc It is a favourite isn't it? The older breakdowns seem to have a greater music library...
@@PredictedCyborg Oh heck yeah. The music is very good
I'm amazed there aren't as many technical problems as there used to be these days!
Interesting comparing this to bbc two analogue failure at the same time seems they got bbc two on slightly earlier than the digital version
Analogue was always far in front of digital. During Euro 2006 I was watching an England game in a pub that had two rooms and TVs in both - one analogue and one digital. It messed the whole game up as those in the analogue room would be going ballistic about 30 seconds before those on digital knew what was happening!
I wonder just how far behind "live" events we are now?
Digital Terrestrial was blanked-out then.
Analogue viewers had more songs played, while Digital Satellite was playing 1 song on repeat...
It's almost like the digital & analogue sections of BBC2 are in totally separate places!
They were, or at least technically. Broadcasting was slightly different between analogue and digital. When the Digital Switch over took place, analogue viewers were given the warning right before and were told to continue watching the current programmes on digital. Its similar to how BBC One and BBC Scotland broadcast.
Things seen on BBC One Scotland isnt the same as what is seen in England. We (Scotland) are apparently a week off or an episode off when it comes to EastEnders for instance.
I dont know about control rooms but the broadcast format between Digital and Analogue were like two different channels.
Diggin' the depressed 2 in the corner
They were probably some people dancing to this break down music in the BBC studio.
I remember a BBC 2 breakdown it was a Thursday evening as you may know Gaelic were shown De a Nis went ahead as planned but when the Gaelic version of Fireman Sam was supposed to be shown it was shown but the episode that was shown was the same one that was shown the week before
That's not really a breakdown. More a mistake
@@timrutten5990 Yes but it felt like a breakdown to me
A E S T H E T I C S
I have a breakdown video from BBC One which also happened the same time as this.
The woman is geting restless
Sanity Plays Its prerecord… Well not here when there's no power!
@@ItsABeautifulDay. nah. It can't be.
@@ItsABeautifulDay. No, Jason....her voice was live. It wasn't on tape, as it probably couldn'tve been, which could've been due to TV industry rules in the U.K. then. o.o
I Love how the woman is out of breath in 6 minutes. The BBC was good back then.
BBC is not good right now, I rather watch some ITV on catch up.
Of all of the music in this video, RUclips only recognizes the very last one (which is in lower quality here)
I got a playlist with the music I managed to find. A few I had to upload myself.
And I saw also that BBC One was also still in the air! 9:50!
They returned earlier, that's why.
8:30 The old Sky interface
I had this song in my dream!
Aidan Pye same 😂
Same
Did you now, Aidan Pye?
Why do they refer to problems as "gremlins?" I'm an American and I've never heard that word used to describe anything except the 80s' greatest movie. Oh, and children on occasion.
They fiddle and break things. it's like a computer bug, no actual bug just a problem.
Music solves everything
BBC 2 had a power failure on launch day. Battersea Power Station caught fire.
Loving the 80s-style music! Much better than the really creepy stuff they play these days...
Oh Christ, you have NO idea how music made in the 1980s would brutally lynch stuff made now. XB
It’s Space Travel buy Rüdiger Meng
Did anyone notice the 2 in the background?
I was just 5 months old at this point
That was my mate's birthday. Y'know, actual birthday.
Does Anybody Have The Full Version Of This Breakdown?
Courtney Grimshaw probaly because BBC News 24 and BBC Parliament was from a different BBC TVS

RIP 2 in the Power Fault Screen
1964 - 2001
I like the music playing in the background 😎👍
Seems that they were playing the exact same song on Digital Satellite...
(Digital Terrestrial was blanked-out (wasn't showing anything), and Analogue was playing all kinds off music)
Can anyone tell me what's the first song?
+ConorSturmey Thank you :) (That comment was from my old account when I was younger and stupider)
Cocu Grimshaw that’s fine. Always happy to help
...and also spot the difference in the background.
I so miss Sky UK WAY BETTER then the crap cable station we have in Australia
If there was any channel more suited to handle a power failure, it is BBC2. LOL, they STARTED with one!

I love 1975 interrupted by music from 1985 😀
They still using the Old Background of BBC 2
Sorry, it was me to comment, not my dad!
I love the music!
With the amount of break downs I have nowadays would be great if I had my own breakdown music haha
First song is nice!
yup, if we know the title even better
But it sucks when the aunnoucer interrupts it
anyone knows the title?
20 years ago today
Thats not a power outage that's an i.t/ equipment failure
There was another technical difficulty 13 days before.
Cool music! xD
yeah, very funky music and should be used at a disco!
Agree?
Like robot sounding at disco music
Its strange, if the BBC suffered a power failure, how could BBC news 24 and BBC parliament be on the air?
Satellite.
It was actually on another transmitter. BBC One, BBC Two & BBC Choice ran from TVC.
They used other transmitters otherwise they used to switch to birmingham. The images you saw were from TVC but being broadcast on another trasmitter.
@@SOSOwner On the former, same with BBC World. On the latter, same with BBC Prime, so that would have been also affected by the fault.
The music sounds like Can't Get You Out Of My Head by Kylie Minogue
It seems as if the second lady or woman in this video sounds like Mrs Thimble from the Angelina Ballerina: The Next Steps television series.
Whoah! Another bbc breakdown!
Nice, Paint Pot Background.
ok here's a plan if u fly a model plane u will get killed by the pylon.
Wish we saw the BBC Knowledge one
Why don't radio stations like Heart and Absolute play those tunes?

How come BBC News and BBC Parliament wasn't affected??

whats the 2nd track

The first song sounds like something by the Human League.
How were the news channels working at the time? Did they have generators or something?
Different studios. Power failure was in TVC, News moved to westminster studio. I assume TVC's CCA had backup
World News came from Millbank at that time anyway so was unaffected
Yes - there’s a video floating around of the chaos this caused on BBC World and News 24. Both services combined with output coming from BBC’s Westminster studios, which was already setup for News use. While BBC World never dropped off air entirely like many other channels did, the need to tie in News 24 AND change their output studio from TVC to Westminster caused quite a few delays.
9:50 "Doesn't work!"
You don't say. 😆
Anyone know the continuity announcer?
I LOVE BBC ❤️
DOESN'T WORK!
If it was a power failure then how did they manage to broadcast this????
Stuff like this can be generated locally at transmitter sites
@@steve.Lowles thanks that's sounds like it explains it
(idk if this is true but qlmb said this in a video)
A skeleton crew appears to keep some services running and they used to switch control to birmingham in case of failures in and around Television Center. Nowadays there isnt many outages, just signal problems
funky music
Why?
how did you screen record in 2001?
They had PC capture cards in 2001
