  • I wanted to extended my metal table crane so that I would be able to pull sheet metal out of the back of my truck. It is always a pain trying to get this stuff in the shop, and this should make it a lot easier. I thickened all of the material to account for the extra length and make it stronger. I don't plan on using this to pick up super heavy material.

    The eye on the end is to use an additional pulley on the cable to increase lifting capacity.

    • @renderwood

      I was thinking maybe it's to connect the end of the cable when you don't use it. Now Jimbo ended up making extra hook at 26:24 just for the same use.

    Nice job, just rotate that tube with pulley by 180 to pulley at the end stand facing upwards, so that the cable does not scrape over the edge of tebe, but goes directly from the winch to the pulley

    I have a 2 ton engine hoist in my shop. Wanted to be able to pull pick up truck beds with it as I never have help .Made an extended boom for it and it works just fine. 20 years of use with no issues. You modification will be just fine.

  • @kennethstaszak9990
    @kennethstaszak9990 7 месяцев назад +9

    I think you missed an opportunity by making the main boom one foot longer out the back to add a counterweight. That would help balance out the load.

    Lot of critiques in the comments but I think the biggest one besides not beefing up the base is that you should have cut off the old base for the gusset attachment. Welding the new 1/4” plate to the old plate did not increase the desired strength much more than it already was. Essentially you have a beefed up crane welded to the same thin gusset base plate.

    @americanmaker8608 7 месяцев назад +8

    My only concern is. You should put a guide or a pulley at the end of the boom. Where the winch cable touches the sharp edge. Or flip your extension 180°. So that the pulley is up.

    • @ianober23
      @ianober23 7 месяцев назад +3

      all he needs to do is flip the boom arm 180, I noticed that as well.

  • @freeidaho-videos
    @freeidaho-videos 7 месяцев назад +1

    Good project!
    Your plates could have been longer if you had flipped one over in layout. This would result in using all of the original plate, and each piece would have been longer.
    The two pins weren't really needed. There is no force on them when lifting. I can remove my pin with a load on the cable.
    Turn your extending boom over so the cable does not wear itself out on the boom.
    Excellent tool! ! !

    Jimbo, you missed the doublers that go around the end of the outer tube. This helps the bearing load where the inner tube rests on the outer tube….like a trailer hitch.

  • @gordowg1wg145
    @gordowg1wg145 7 месяцев назад

    Cool, I somehow missed the vid' where the crane was bought and fitted, but it's a sound idea and much easier to do than an extendable ceiling crane that would need to be run out over the truck deck.
    You probably cut the winch plate of in the expectation you'd be re-using it on the now extension.
    The eye had three possible functions, as mentioned by others - it the winch was an option, a manual winch would need an anchor point to hang from; it would give an anchor point for the hook if a pulley block was used; somewhere to secure the hook out of the way.
    The problem with the cut-off saw was the heavy end wasn't supported - a bit of dunnage to support the weight would have solved that little hassle.

    The eye on the bottom of the boom is to hook the crane hook to if you are using a snatch block and hook on the bottom of the line so you could make it 2:1

    Well jimbo you arent gettin any younger so you have to start working smarter. As far as shop tools i think the crane was one of the beest investments you couldve made. Anyways as always love seeing your projects and cant wait to see what you work on next 👍

  • @mwinner101
    @mwinner101 7 месяцев назад

    I think I would have just added casters to the plasma table and rolled it closer to the truck’s tailgate and slid the material on to it. But that wouldn’t have been as fun to watch. Nice job Jimbo. 👍

  • @Kami8705
    @Kami8705 7 месяцев назад +2

    I'm guessing the hook on the bottom that you cut off was for doubling the line to increase the rating of the winch. You'd need an additional hook and pulley but it would let you lift more if the winch was maxing out, which it doesn't sound like you are.

    You might want to reinforce the mouth of your main tube. Most tube in tube will be strapped at the mouth to work against the leverage of the inside tube cracking the mouth of the main tube. Take a look at trailer hitch receivers, among many.

    The ring you cut off the end of the crane arm could have been use to hook the lift wire on and use a pulley with a hook on it to speed up lift materials and increase lifting capacity

    I’ve never used a plasma cutter. I was surprised that your cut started with a pierce rather than the opposite direction. Clearly it wasn’t a problem and also cnc plasma tables pierce all the time. Still- I wonder if there’s a “standard” way to approach this. Better to pierce first, or better to enter from an open air side?
