***Look Up 2 - Coming September 2024!!! // Subscribe to be notified when it's released!*** 'Look Up 2: Ten Years Later' - Will look at what has changed over the last ten years since the first video went viral, and what new lessons can be learnt in a world where smartphones and social media are now an unavoidably big part of our daily lives. There will be a whole new poem, new story, and a new surprise ending...
@@arcanefunds2645 your teacher's right though. if only the youth knew about the dark shit that social media is behind closed doors and just how bad it's fucking you guys over. you really have no idea. its doing a lot more than just keeping you on your phone, its literally invading your life, selling your data and a decade or two from now you'll start to feel the impact and realize how horrible it is social media literally destroys people's lives, it ruins their careers, it ruins their finances, it does a lot more than what you think
Many of you have been asking me for the words to 'Look Up', so here they are! Feel free to share. Gary. Look Up. I have 422 friends, yet I am lonely. I speak to all of them everyday, yet none of them really know me. The problem I have sits in the spaces between, looking into their eyes, or at a name on a screen. I took a step back, and opened my eyes, I looked around, and then realised that this media we call social, is anything but when we open our computers, and it’s our doors we shut. All this technology we have, it’s just an illusion, of community, companionship, a sense of inclusion yet when you step away from this device of delusion, you awaken to see, a world of confusion. A world where we’re slaves to the technology we mastered, where our information gets sold by some rich greedy bastard. A world of self-interest, self-image, self-promotion, where we share all our best bits, but leave out the emotion. We are at our most happy with an experience we share, but is it the same if no one is there. Be there for you friends, and they’ll be there too, but no one will be, if a group message will do. We edit and exaggerate, we crave adulation, we pretend we don’t notice the social isolation. We put our words into order, until our lives are glistening, we don’t even know if anyone is listening. Being alone isn’t the problem, let me just emphasize, that if you read a book, paint a picture, or do some exercise, you are being productive, and present, not reserved or recluse, you’re being awake and attentive, and putting your time to good use. So when you’re in public, and you start to feel alone, put your hands behind your head, and step away from the phone. You don’t need to stare at your menu, or at your contact list, just talk to one another, and learn to co-exist. I can’t stand to hear the silence, of a busy commuter train, when no one wants to talk through the fear of looking insane. We’re becoming unsocial, it no longer satisfies to engage with one another, and look into someone’s eyes. We’re surrounded by children, who since they were born, watch us living like robots, and think it’s the norm. It’s not very likely you will make world’s greatest dad, if you cant entertain a child without a using an iPad. When I was a child, I would never be home, I’d be out with my friends, on our bikes we would roam. We’d ware holes in our trainers, and graze up our knees; we’d build our own clubhouse, high up in the trees. Now the parks are so quiet, it gives me a chill to see no children outside and the swings hanging still. There’s no skipping or hopscotch, no church and no steeple, we’re a generation of idiots, smart phones and dumb people. So look up from your phone, shut down that display, take in your surroundings, and make the most of today. Just one real connection is all it can take, to show you the difference that being there can make. Be there in the moment, when she gives you the look, that you remember forever, as when love overtook. The time you first hold her hand, or first kiss her lips, the time you first disagree, but still love her to bits. The time you don’t need to tell hundreds, about what you’ve just done, because you want to share the moment, with just this one. The time you sell your computer, so you can buy a ring, for the girl of your dreams, who is now the real thing. The time you want to start a family, and the moment when, you first hold your baby girl, and get to fall in love again. The time she keeps you up at night, and all you want is rest, and the time you wipe away the tears, as your baby flees the nest. The time your little girl returns, with a boy for you to hold, and the day he calls you granddad, and makes you feel real old The time you take in all you’ve made, just by giving life attention, and how your glad you didn’t waste it, by looking down at some invention. The time you hold your wife’s hand, and sit down beside her bed you tell her that you love her, and lay a kiss upon her head. She then whispers to you quietly, as her heart gives a final beat, that she’s lucky she got stopped, by that lost boy in the street. But none of these times ever happened, you never had any of this, When you’re too busy looking down, you don’t see the chances you miss. So look up from your phone, shut down those displays, we have a finite existence, a set number of days. Why waste all our time getting caught in the net, as when the end comes, nothing’s worse than regret. I am guilty too, of being part of this machine, this digital world, where we are heard but not seen. Where we type and don’t talk, where we read as we chat, where we spend hours together, without making eye contact. Don’t give in to a life where you follow the hype, give people your love, don’t give them your like. Disconnect from the need to be heard and defined Go out into the world, leave distractions behind. Look up from your phone, shut down that display, stop watching this video, live life the real way. #poetry #spokenword #lyrics #lookup
Thank you! I post this to people all the time. Its sad but I posted it for the first time and no one even acknowledged it. We all have a way of hiding and no one wants to deal with their problems or their lives. I absolutely love this video and gives me the ultimate chill when I watch it!
This video has opened my eyes. Thank You. i didn't exactly understand everything you said because of your accent. so i needed the words. i will share this.
Well then why do you say? I'm sure he has been doing better than you, just check responses see what they say who is true and who just does. Watching the impact that he has done, giving me life, it's only just begun. I am 14 just realizing life isn't about computers. there's more to it than being addicted to the stuff we've done, there are greater things so open your eyes and see what he's accomplished in his lifetime showing us what is good vs evil. Being on apple all day and knight, made me need glasses. So go live your life until it's all gone, I'm sure you'll regret it once it's all done, haven't realized till it's too late.
One of the things that struck me most in this vid: *"We're surrounded by children, who since they were born, who watched us living like robots and think it's the norm. It's not very likely you'll make World's Greatest Dad if you can't entertain a child without using an iPad."* This quote is so, *so* important I can't even emphasize. Because we're missing out on the chance to connect with our children, the chance to show them how to connect to other people in society. It's very important if we want the future generations to know how to love and care for and pay attention to one another. It's important that they don't hide in their phones, but that they make strong connections with others, so they don't feel loneliness or seclusion. This is what I want for *my* kids. So, in service, I'll now be doing much more to help spread love, care, laughter, attention and good things to children. I'll be doing the best I can to love them and play with them and also teach them how to interact with others and even make others laugh. I definitely won't stare at my screen when my nephew, Cole, wants my attention anymore, because I don't want him to act that way when he's a grown-up and has his own kids. It's important that we do this for our children, because they are our legacy and what we're leaving behind. They make up the future world. I'm Jacqui and I'm just 16. This is my promise for myself and how I'll help the world :) P.S. I only just discovered this life lesson while watching, so that's something. Thank you Gary for posting !
Jacqui thank fuck there's 16 year olds that realise this, but that's only step one. Step two is implementing it, I highly HIGHLY doubt the 480k people that liked this have put down their fucking phones. I don't have an iphone, life is 999x better without one, I could sit here and explain why if you want but it would be long.
MadJack122 Not only 16 year olds understand this video, I'm a few years younger and I still get the point. Everyone has become way too absorbed in tech, that if it were to be taken away, the whole world would probably crumble to bits. Heck, even my father who had no tech when he was a kid has been absorbed into the never ending cycle. Hey look, new iPhone! Lets go waste money on it, giving to some greedy pile of crap. Heck, in my opinion, money shouldn't even exist. It brings out evil in people. Industry leaders hoard it while there are starving kids out there. No, no, no, wait, not even kids. Freakin' babies! And they're to busy lounging in their condos to give a crap about it. mankind really screwed up at some point, and it's going to be pretty damn hard to fix it.
MadJack122 What we also need less of in this new digital era, is language like you've just used...left behind for everyone to read. She's 16....do you think your message was responsible? The next comment is from someone saying they are a few years younger than Jacqui. Think about who reads what you leave behind in comments/messages.
In my opinion he isn't trying to completely stop us from using our smartphones or computers every day. What I think is that he just wants to remind the world that social life is about much more than just texting each other through the internet.
For anyone attacking the video for being "anti-technology" note he is saying not to take it to the extreme! He isn't saying destroy your internet connection, he is saying remember to sometimes put down the phone and have fun.
Well actually, he's arguing that the internet results in missed opportunities for people. He just ignores the millions of love stories that started on the internet. If we're considering opportunity here, then doesn't the internet put one the potential to talk to billions of strangers and this guy cares about talking to people on the bus. Why would i want to talk to someone on the bus? He also wears the nostalgia glasses when he talks about the park. I mean, i like the park and everything, but just because you liked it, don't try and claim that it's the right way to do things.
Balance, it's all about balance. These devices give us unprecedented communication and connectedness, but social media isn't supposed to be a replacement for actually conversing with real people. I spend my time in front of a computer. It's my hobby, it's my job, it's my life. But that doesn't mean I don't start to feel awful when I fail to set aside the time to hang out and have a good time. I think if anything this is simply a good wake-up call to those people who are spending all their time on devices and wondering why they feel like utter shit. I've been there. I didn't need a video to tell me the answer, but some people do. And I hope this helps them to take a step to learn how to get that balance in their lives.
It was 3 years ago when I first saw this video. yet still, every once in a while i have to return for this beautiful piece of art. still cant get through the second part without tearing up. you created a timeless message, and it should be appreciated for decades. thank you.
Everyone who's hating on this video just cannot deny the fact how they "need" and constantly use their smartphone everyday, and feel that they always have to have it. For about 2 weeks, AT&T screwed up something on my account, so I couldn't get any service at all. I have AT&T wifi too, so that account was messed up. But you know what? I made the best of it. Not having communication for 2 days was honestly great. It was less stressful on me, and it was better to actually talk to people in person. Lesson here, if you're one of the 8.8K people who thumbs downed this video, then how about you actually try going without you're phone. Its a great experience. I learned that there are tons of wonderful people that I have never even met right around me.
Everyone who's hating on this video just cannot deny the fact how they "need" and constantly use *running water* everyday, and feel that they always have to have it. For about 2 weeks, *The Water Company* screwed up something on my *water line*, so I couldn't get any *running water* at all. I have *electricity* with them too, so that service was messed up. But you know what? I made the best of it. Not having *running water* for 2 days was honestly great. It was less stressful on me, and it was better to actually *boil water over a fire to kill the germs*. Lesson here, if you're one of the 8.8K people who thumbs downed this video, then how about you actually try going without *running water*. Its a great experience. I learned that there are tons of *fresh water springs* that I have never even *drank from* right around me. As you can see, the internet is just another service that we may as well utilize, same with electricity and water. Attacking a harmless service is completely futile, you have to realise that it is select individuals who cannot cope with extended exposure to the internet, or water, or electricity, or lotto, or coffee, or you name it. It has nothing to do with the system itself, as it is clearly evident that the internet is a major step forward in the information age
amen to that! i don't even have a smartphone/iphone, only a normal nokia mobile phone, even without touch screen! but I'm fine with it, I don't need whatsapp, games or apps, etc.! :) these things are so overrated!
You see the thing is I hate on this video because I don't think some of the content is true. I don't have to do sit on my computer or be on my smartphone 24/7 to disagree or "hate".
A few days ago I was coming out Walmart with my mother. It was really cold and sleet was falling rapidly. I didn't have my phone the whole day due to leaving it at home on accident. I'm thankful for that. I was helping my mom out up the items fast because of the falling sleet I was about to go in the car. Then I noticed an elderly woman struggling getting off of her little shopping cart ( for the disabled ) next to us. I watched as she was barley able to stand and walk, and her cane was in the basket of the cart. With that I quickly walked over to her and asked if I could help. Her face quickly lit up with a smile and I grabbed her bags and put them in her car. She was really thankful for what I did but she had to go back to the store to put up her cart. I never drove one of those so I asked in how it worked and I drove it inside. I got looks by everyone but it was worth it. With this I knew that if I had my phone I wouldn't have ever noticed her and would've been on Instagram or FB
+DontMind MyComment OK so you're saying that it was SLEETING OUT SIDE and you were walking through a parking lot.. so if you had your phone, you would have been looking at it whilst walking through a parking lot while sleeting? pfft
+The Catalyst Monotony of the Rock Hard Memers Yes I would've been, where I live everyone is almost like that. I really don't like that quality about me. 😔😔
5 years later, I still hate this video. if it wasn't for my computer, internet, I would never meet my best friends and would remain lonely and unhappy forever.
TabalugaDragon Well it is possible to do positive things on the computer and internet the overall message that you shouldn’t waste your life constantly looking down at your phone or staying home looking at meaningless social media posts is still a good one
All these years later, and I can almost recite this insightful poem verbatim. And yes, even after nearly a decade since its release, its message holds true. This poetic recitation was one of the key factors in helping me leave the social media world all those years ago. And I have never and will never return. Thank you for helping me see the light.
This video woke me up about a month ago. I used to be a hardcore gamer who would spend the whole day just staring at a computer screen. My grades were going down and I had very little interaction outside my game. After watching this video I started to realize how I had wasted almost 6 years of my life. I started fixing things I hated about myself and now I'm halfway of getting a life and I'm super happy that I saw this video and realized how my life sucked before.
7 years? This should have 7 billion views. It seems like nobody actually listened. I watched, but here I am. I'm going to do my best to leave the phone in my pocket when I'm outside. Directions, phone calls, if I get a text...NOTHING ELSE...
What sucks about this amazing video is that it's going to circle the internet for the next 2 weeks and then it will be forgotten. Videos like this aren't enough to change our ways, we are the only ones who can make the habitual change. So I'll just use this video as a tool to show people why I've become so bad at texting them back.
u r 100% right my friend. but atleast it's a good start.. a few( maybe 20-40 people) in a million will change thier views now after watching this video
I moved to a different country so I love seeing pictures and updates from family and friends on Facebook. For that reason, I know that technology does have social and emotional value but it cannot and should not replace time spent in the physical presence of those we love. I'm always saving up for plane tickets home. :)
"Moderation" is key.. something society has forgotten. Live hard. Drink hard. Drug hard. Die hard. Yet... they're not really living. They're dying. Physically or spiritually ( not religious spiritual ).
I watched this video when it first came out when I was 12 years old. Five years later, I’m 17, and I find myself coming back to this video. Profoundly impactful.
Ironically, this will end up becoming a viral sensation all over Facebook and Twitter, and people will be looking down at their smartphones, iPads, laptops, etc to watch it.
The sad thing is, I watch this video, I even cry, and then I click away to the next one, without a goodbye. The sad truth is this video is not doing much. It's trying to open our eyes, but we're a thick bunch. If only the world could be a different way, but we can't do anything, today is today. Putting down our phones would be a good start, but honestly most of aren't very smart. All we do is like this and share it. When we could be doing something else with a lot more merit. But here I am clicking away, with only comment that will be here to stay.
I'm 11 years old and I really like the message of this video. I play on a soccer team where there's nobody that lives close to me. They all live 30 minutes or more away, and I don't have anybody near my house to play with. Sure, I can run out and play outside myself which I already do! But it's just not as fun. If I lived by all of my amazing friends, I'd be outside so much more and I probably wouldn't even have a laptop. I just wish I could live in a community where I had friends living right next to me. Living in the country may sound cool, but it's so boring. I don't even know how to ride a bike because I have nobody to ride it with. My parents said they wouldn't let me drive my bike on the side of the road, even if I DID know how to ride a bike, for whatever reason, so there's no point in even learning. I might sound like I'm depressed or whatever, but my life is actually quite great. I just wish I wasn't as bored. I wish I had friends to play with every day! :( Then again, I shouldn't be complaining, there's people out there that don't even have anything... This comment may sound pointless, I just want to know if anyone is in the same situation.
+skrmz can you ask your parents to pick you up from a diff friends house one night a week after school? and soon enough youll start having sleepovers on weekends, and when your 14 or so, idk what age but youll be able to get public transport yourself in the evening right? are there other hobbies you could do that are great to do by yourself? do you know what things you find interesting?
Chazza Beatrice Thanks for this advice, and I do go outside and go to people's houses sometimes. But soccer is a lot of gas because we have to travel like 3 hours sometimes, so my mom doesn't take me to other people's houses much.
between 11 and 16 might be the only times you have the freedom of being able to chill out so much and do what you like with your time - so dont waste all that time that you can do so much cool stuff with on top of the easy fun stuff. you could learn how to make your own videogames with online tutorials, or how to make cool electronic music through your computer etc. but anyway, im sure youll find a fulfilling way to spend your time when not with mates! you just gotta explore a bit
This video is now 9 and a half years old, and it still brings me to tears thinking about why we allow ourselves to be sucked into a false sense of communication.
okay. the message of the video is not to throw your technology out of your car window on a busy highway, it's just relaying the fact that our generation spends too much time on the internet. of course, it is convenient when making plans, or catching up with old friends, or even finding a significant other. but the key is to limit the time spent doing these things so that the whole of humanity isn't a fat, emotionless mess. i don't know... personally, obviously, i liked the video: it was moving and gave an overall inspirational outlook on life. but judging these comments, that seems to just be me.
What do we get if we invest the whole of our being into a piece of technology? We get a lump of metal back. I cannot remember things I hear over the internet, yet at the same time I feel my memories becoming more distant because I get those hours of internet in my mind. I do not use a phone, but I realize that my computer is the same thing. Even I have had the moment when everyone around me is texting, while I sit there in silence. They only speak to show one another something funny, but always something from their phone, not from them. A whole 30 minutes, where friends sit in silence.
Dear Gary Turk, I wanted to take a moment to express my deep appreciation for your video Look Up. Your powerful spoken word piece, paired with its thought-provoking visuals, has had a profound impact on me and, no doubt, countless others. In an age where digital distractions are more prevalent than ever, your message is not only timely but essential. The way you highlight the dangers of digital addiction, the constant pull of social media, the way it diminishes real-world connections, and the overwhelming comparison it fosters, struck a chord with me. Your words are a stark reminder of the need to be more present, to engage fully with the world and the people around us, rather than being lost in the endless scroll of virtual noise. It was refreshing to hear a message that encourages us to reclaim our attention and time, and I found myself reflecting on how often I, too, am guilty of choosing the screen over genuine human interaction. The visual elements of the video were particularly impactful, drawing a sharp contrast between moments of connection and the isolation that technology can bring. Your ability to convey such an important message through art, without oversimplifying the issue, was masterful. The combination of your sincere delivery and the poignant imagery effectively left me feeling both challenged and inspired. In a world where technology is continuously shaping how we interact with each other, Look Up serves as a crucial reminder that we still have the power to change our habits and re-prioritize our relationships with the people around us. Your call to action is a hopeful one: to look up and reengage with the present moment before it slips away unnoticed. Thank you for sharing such an important message. Your video has sparked a much-needed conversation, and I hope it continues to encourage individuals to find balance in their digital lives, reconnect with those who matter most, and, above all, to be more present in the world.
Not true at all ;) People can be butthurt all they want. But think about how many HOURS this idiot who made the video spent putting this video together. All he want's is likes and shares. It might sound genuine, and I do see the message. But I don't know where he is from. When I go to parks I still see bunch of people. Playgrounds still have kids roaming around. Before the internet it was just TV that everyone stayed home for. Before that it was books. He should really stfu and mind his own sad world where he tries to teach others to live free of the social media, by sharing his crap via the social media ;) Just my two cents. Think I will go outside now ;)
Dafuq bro I think he made this video because he's concerned about the future. His own future maybe, or others aswell. Either way. It was productive at least. A waste of time is however. Thousands of selfies and pictures of the food you just cooked. That was one smiley too many. I see you are one of the butthurt ;)
Dafuq bro if you're trying to spread a message, you spend time making it. Don't think him putting this together and the time it took him is in comparison to the hours we all spend on the internet. Oh and I almost forgot: ;)
We live on a technological age, there's no escaping that fact - but I wonder if we've become too reliant on technology that it overshadows 'real life'; I think that's what this film is about - I think it's a matter of balancing 'virtual' with 'tangible' reality - man that's deep!!!
"She then whispers to you quietly, as her heart gives a final beat, that she's lucky she got stopped, by that lost boy in the street". FUCK. Everytime I feel like I need to get rid of a lump in my throat I come here. Those lines just make it. Every time.
This clip is not against technology. It is against the overuse of technology There is a real world out there. Today you see people dining on a table and not talking to each other but checking their phone all the time.
The only reason this video has been made and spread around using technology, is because we ALL use technology. How else would he of reached out his message?
This is great. I'm born 1994 and when i was a little kid i was always outside playing with my friends on the garden, playing football, playing hide and seek and those things. I'm actually a little bit frightened about the future. When i walk outside with my best friend at the place we used to play when we were kids, it's empty. No one is there. The Social Network will take over this generation, and the next one for sure, and it makes me so sad to actually know that's a fact. Great video, inspiring. Now if you can excuse me, i'm going outside with some friends to play Basketball.
How about we stop arguing in the comments and just accept that we need these devices but don't need to be have them in our hands constantly? That's the point here. Keep your phone on, ready but put away so that you can be a social person while still having the ability to make contact with somebody you need to or receive an important message or call. The point is to find a balance. Not to throw it away.
5 years later, i have returned. This forgotten lesson, has now been relearned. I must thank RUclips recommended, as i, have apprehended, This little piece of wisdom. I can now escape the prison, That is my mobile phone, I will no longer be alone.
People are so quick to say negative things. Not once did he say Facebook, or social media is BAD. He's saying that the addiction to social media is bad. If you're not addicted to social media then this video isn't for you now, is it? And yes he's using social media - how else is he supposed to reach people who are addicted TO social media? Write it in the newspapers? >.>
Dylan Jackson Because it's such a typical, pretentious 9gag-generation video that is basically designed to go viral. Bit of a conflicting message, isn't it?
Still as powerful now as when I watched it 9 years ago when I was 12...was wondering why I never go on my phone in public and then thought back to this video that must have set the path early on
***** No his point isvalid. All drugs have a medical application. Go to your dentist without getting the drug to numb. Have your teeth removed and think again. PS. Whether or no Marijuana is legal is irrelevant. It's how its used. Because legal or not, people still use it.
***** So basically what you are saying is that technology can only be used in one way, as a soscial media? If you ever think to actually look around yu you will see that the technology we have make it so people get to work and that we get food on our plates. Technology in itself is a great thing but getting isolated for saying the wrong thing on facebook is wrong.
I definitely agree with this video. I am still young and my parents are on their computers almost everyday. Every now and then we do go out but not as much as when I was younger. I don't even talk to my parents as much even if we're under the same roof. We used to go travel and go out as a family. Even when I'm with so-called friends, all they really do is go on Instagram etc. I'm lucky enough to have atleast one real friends. I read the comments and they make me confused and sad. I wonder why some people don't understand this video's message.
I live in NYC, and I'll admit I spend WAY too much time on my phone, but 99% of the time I'm talking to my girlfriend in Seattle. We met in person and immediately fell in love, but she spent so much time on her phone we didn't even start dating until she went back to Seattle. I saw this video a year ago and now when we are together we turn off our phones. Since then we've spent a lot more time together, and we're going off to college together soon... Looking back, I wonder what I missed. I wish I had just turned off my phone and looked up
TheThirdWorld I hope things keep on going well for you. But since you guys already made a good decision on turning off your phones, I am sure your relationship will last for as long as you live ^_^ . I am just hoping that other people wake up as well and make the same decision that you did :)
Summer Sevii I do not own a phone and I disagree with this video and you. Why you may ask, well the answer is clear. The maker of this video is a self righteous asshole telling people what they should and should do by, guess what, using the very form of communication that he is talking smack about. The internet and cellphones are simply a means of spreading complex messages across vast distances.
nicothecheeco I'm a 14 year old girl, and I don't have a phone. All my friends have phones. This video is the main reason I don't want a phone. I like talking to people face to face. I do have my laptop ( which i'm using right now) but that's all.
abbysally2000 i think that's a good way to think. but what if someone needs to contact you? having a phone is convenient, but not when you keep using it
I wonder what's gonna happen if internet is shut off for a month or just one week. It's gonna be incovenient, but it may also be fun. I think it'll make this world a better place.
This world ceases to exist as you now it. Do you really think that main purpose and impact on human society of the internet is giving us entertainment? Everything in developped countries is ran by something, that uses internet. Without it, in a few weeks, I guess, it will be hard to find anything that works in economy, social care etc.. Technology is powering this society, and I do not mean by cute little kittens and SWAG posts on twitter.
TheBlekCorpse You're right. Everything in the first world is dependent on the internet for it to run which more than anything shows that we are the slaves of technology, not it's master.
“We’re becoming un-social; it no longer satisfies to engage with one another and look into someone's eyes”. This quote from the “Look Up” video is so important because to actually socialize a person has to accompany someone else, not a device. Modern technology and social media developed an artificial way of instant contact with others. Which inturn takes away from the physical empathy we provide for each other. For example, sending a text message to your loved one saying “I love you” opposed to being able to look them in the eye, share a hug, and hear them tell you, “I love you too”. I believe the message of this video was to make people understand social media and technology may hyperconnect us all. But there is no actual heartfelt connection through any device; it's all artificial.
Illtell ulater Don't exaggerate. I mean, use technology, it's a huge part of today's life. Just learn the healthy balance. Outside, walking, at a park, at school, at work, at dinner, leave your phone in your pocket.
Yes, it's exactly where it needs to be. It's a lesson for all of us addicted to the social media. If you live normal life, you don't have to see this, so it's on the right place.
I used to have an iPhone that I used way to much Payed no attention to my friends or family and such I was to busy with my games till morning till dark Was to busy when my sister asked if I could go to the park Laughing at slender man instead of my friends Don't listen to my date, I had messages to send I'm watching television, sponge bob and Patrick When I could be watching my grandmother, who has been ill and sick This video taught me from when i first watched it all That I don't need technology to make me happy at all I should live life to the fullest, take my girlfriend to the zoo Go to the park, watch a firework show, there's tons of things to do I typed this on an iPad, but for now, I'll put it away I bought a new dog, and I have to walk him today And while I'm outside, I'll drive to my girlfriends in my big white truck I'm proposing tomorrow, please wish me luck
Wow! Wow! Wow! First time seeing this video just now and I'm literally wiping away tears and thinking I should delete every social media account I have.. wow.. just wow..
There is nothing inherently damaging with social media and/or digital technology. It's not so much a matter of *how much* we use it as is, *how we use it.*
Kids these days with their emails. And faxes. And beepers always going off. Back in my day we wrastled mama T-Rexes so we could have her eggs for breakfast!
The part where he talks about using time alone to read books, make art etc. is definitely somewhat relevant. It can be easy to fall into the trap of spending every hour of the day on social media, particularly right now. Moderation is key.
Yes, but when we have the rich substance of life in front of us we let it go by. Don't settle for an imitation of life when you have the real thing... Besides, you could read a book or some shit, what's the point of being social if you have nothing to offer? Enrich yourself.
*I want this to be remade with the exact same lyrics by a damn good rapper. Please, let's make this happen.* Upvote this comment so people can see it, and flood the comments with the same suggestion if you agree since youtube seems to like swallowing comments even if they are hugely upvoted.
my phone was dead and i was lost in nyc. i asked for directions to the nearest starbucks and the guy i asked happened to be dwayne "the rock" johnson. he said "do you smell what the rock is cooking?" and slammed me into the pavement. i was ever so grateful, and he transferred the directions to the nearest starbucks telepathically. kids, put down your phone and live life the real way.
MatewGamer2 not taking away from the fact that most of it is true, but if the person is truly happy then so be it. It sounds like a forced opinion to me is all.
People are just ignorant... not even by accident, but on purpose. Let them take a look into the mirror and they'll see all the imperfections they never wanted to realize. Nobody likes to be the guilty one so they hit dislike to hide and cover up their faults.
This is exceptionally impressive. So true, sad, yet forgetful. This video will be shared across all social media platforms... But nothing will change. So true, so sad.
Totally agree, John! - wonderful message, very poignant, very powerful. Would like to see the opposite video to this, though, and see how much joy and togetherness social media can bring. Tempted to work on something!
JohnBirdMedia This video is going viral through social media and people are getting benefited by this by sharing it with each other in just a single click even with them who live in different country just coz of social media and the cell phone its so easy to see, share, become happy and useful ! After doing this what we are going to do is to stop using them ?? Sounds interesting nothing against but just a thought. :)
Calum McSwiggan Social media - especially facebook causes far more damage and depression that it ever has or will been a benefit to society. A simple google of "facebook depression" or "social media depression" will show countless bonafide sources of exactly that. "togetherness" in "social media" is an oxymoron - you're NOT TOGETHER WHEN YOU'RE ONLINE is the POINT OF THE VIDEO.. you're TYPING to them not TALKING to them face to face!
I think the best we can do and take from this video is to be aware of what we're doing to ourselves through this constant addiction to social media and validation from likes and comments... Social media definitely isn't a totally bad, negative or harmful thing but we need to control our use of it because as shown in this video, it's replacing so many of the interactions and things that we do that make us human. Like Gary says 'I'm guilty too of being part of this machine', we all are and we all need to make a change.
For all the haters- This video isnt asking to completely stop technology Its just asking people to limit the time spent on devices *One shouldnt take things so damn literally
Yo man, you are genius. you have all the time to reply each and everyone's comment. Still u spent less time. I was shocked. That was something that inspired me :D lol
Yeah you are right. I do think technology is great in many ways of course. I decided to only use Facebook Messenger now since you don't need to log in and see everyone's status, etc , you only need to use it for private messaging. I feel better without fully logging on already (yet I enjoy RUclips and looking at informative blogs, etc).
Rahul Andro Thank you Rahul :-). We only need to limit our time on the net then we are all good. We just need a good walk everyday and interact with people from time to time(even if you are just at a shop counter buying milk).
Some people just don't like being told the truth behind their actions, thinking that showing dislike will make people think they disagree, it's a shield for them as they don't want to recognize that this video was aimed at them.
FusedAtoms For many, this video doesn't actually reveal any "truth" to themselves. However, this video DOES gives the illusion that it is. Gary tries to make it seem like technology has and will negatively impacted everyone, socially, from social media use. When in reality, it's only YOU that can be blamed for your lack of experience in the "real" world (as many call it). I use social media and usually take my smartphone wherever I go. I take it mostly for safety precautions (in case my car breaks down) and of course to speak to friends of mine usually to hang out and skateboard. In fact, if I didn't have my phone, I probably wouldn't be able to hang out with them in person as much as I have been able to. See, all this doesn't mean I don't "look in other people's eyes" or I wont be able to "entertain a child without using an iPad". It also doesn't mean I won't miss out on opportunities, find a beautiful wife, and live a happy life with her. If anything, my phone actually CREATES more opportunities for me to hang out, make social interaction, etc. He makes it seem like if you keep doing what you are doing, you will never land anywhere. That may be true if all you are doing is playing video games all day, but most people know that playing games all day is bad. This video does a good job to persuade you to put down your phone or turn off the computer by over-exaggerating the negative side of social media and smartphone use. But, nowhere is he talking about the positive aspects of our technology. It also does a damn good job at making people feel as if they've done something wrong/wasted their life by using phones and programs that HIS generation probably aided in the invention of. (how ironic, right?) And yet, he is calling us the "dumb" people with "smart" phones. The generation he is talking to is not his, it's the late 20th century and early 21st century he's talking to. Gary seems to be stuck in the past, where smartphones and our present technology were nonexistent. He states opinions and is biased throughout basically the whole video. He, along with everyone else, can't stop the affects the advancement of technology has on our society.
It's much like telling a drug addict that they screwed up their life with the needle in their arm. They will lash out because they don't want to hear it.
FusedAtoms I like talking to my friends on facebook, whatsapp etc. and looking up to find myself in empty room, in bed before i go to sleep, taking a bath or whatever. If anything social media have enabled us to talk more with our friends than before and whenever we want. distances are bridged in less then a second, I think its beatifull what technology can do. And its not like its one or the other. I chat with my friends everyday, and meet them once or twice a week too. Its a great way to stay connected with friends and family, even when you have a busy live or dont live close to them. Sure, some people might experience lonelyness, but then just message or call your friends to grab a drink or just talk. I think this video really exeguarates the issues some people might experience. And making your point through a love story, which i will admit is touching, is an easy way to convince people of just about anything. this video describes people as beings that need attention to survive while "ignoring social isolation". Some people are obsessed with likes, retweets etc, but that has little to do with social media and more with your personality. And lastly, if the relationship that we have with technology makes us happy, then who cares about how things used to be. Society changes all the time. this is the future. If you dont like it, then dont participate and go hangout with your friends. But dont make this some kind of global issue that we're all suffering from, cause we're simply not
Yvar Lagerzand Yeah, right on! I used to write a letter to my father and/or mother every couple of months, send them photo-prints once every few years, now they see photos of me and my life every week, and they talk or write on a weekly basis. Same with my best friends. Especially the distance thing is important here. And let's not forget the fact that you can finally find others that think alike, even if your preference is excentric as hell.
I think today's technology is amazing, I can honestly say that when I were younger and didn't have the technology I do now I was bored a hell of a lot more, I'd say 50% of the time I was at a loose end, If you have a decent level of self control you can live your life to the fullest whilst engaged in technology.
Yet look at you now, you have no proper grammar and can't spell some of the easiest words right. How'd you find out about this video? Facebook? Twitter? Instagram? Or were you outside with your best friend at a park when you heard passing citizens talking about it, like me? Maybe you can say something against this wonderful poem if you knew anything yourself
Vivian D. I guess you didn't realize not all of us are from an english speaking country. You can't expect perfect grammar from everyone. Using social media doesn't mess with your grammar. I know plenty of people that don't use any modern technology, yet fail to type even close to correct whatever language they're speaking.
Vivian D. What a condescending tone you have. After watching this video, I would gladly sit in a confined space next to you and only look at my phone, considering how ignorant you are with your "High Horse" attitude. I believe that social media stumps social skills, but sometimes it is good to have the "ignore" button to press for people like you.
Vivian D. Deadlytearz wasn't saying anything against the poem and you being "at a park when you heard passing citizens talking about it" is obviously bullshit.
Vivian D. First of all, I really don't care if I don't use proper grammar or spelling 100% of the time as long as what I write is understandable, that's all that matters, after all this is the internet and isn't exactly vitally important, second of all what I wrote was not hurtful or rude towards anybody so I don't deserve that response, simple as.

'Look Up 2: Ten Years Later' - Will look at what has changed over the last ten years since the first video went viral, and what new lessons can be learnt in a world where smartphones and social media are now an unavoidably big part of our daily lives.
There will be a whole new poem, new story, and a new surprise ending...
excited to see this!
Can't wait!
I've liked but don't share because I don't have any social media account.
I remember watching the first one in elementary school. And it’s crazy to think how much the first video holds up to today.
Awesome Gary, I look forward to this 👏
No one :
Absolutely no one:
Every Teacher in existence: Hmm yes this would make for a good assignment
I feel your pain. I have to write an essay, online, might I say, about how horrible social media is.
Yeah me too I’m writing an assignment about this video 🤦🏻♀️
FAx
yepp lmao
@@arcanefunds2645 your teacher's right though. if only the youth knew about the dark shit that social media is behind closed doors and just how bad it's fucking you guys over. you really have no idea. its doing a lot more than just keeping you on your phone, its literally invading your life, selling your data and a decade or two from now you'll start to feel the impact and realize how horrible it is
social media literally destroys people's lives, it ruins their careers, it ruins their finances, it does a lot more than what you think
Many of you have been asking me for the words to 'Look Up', so here they are! Feel free to share. Gary.
Look Up.
I have 422 friends, yet I am lonely.
I speak to all of them everyday, yet none of them really know me.
The problem I have sits in the spaces between,
looking into their eyes, or at a name on a screen.
I took a step back, and opened my eyes,
I looked around, and then realised
that this media we call social, is anything but
when we open our computers, and it’s our doors we shut.
All this technology we have, it’s just an illusion,
of community, companionship, a sense of inclusion
yet when you step away from this device of delusion,
you awaken to see, a world of confusion.
A world where we’re slaves to the technology we mastered,
where our information gets sold by some rich greedy bastard.
A world of self-interest, self-image, self-promotion,
where we share all our best bits, but leave out the emotion.
We are at our most happy with an experience we share,
but is it the same if no one is there.
Be there for you friends, and they’ll be there too,
but no one will be, if a group message will do.
We edit and exaggerate, we crave adulation,
we pretend we don’t notice the social isolation.
We put our words into order, until our lives are glistening,
we don’t even know if anyone is listening.
Being alone isn’t the problem, let me just emphasize,
that if you read a book, paint a picture, or do some exercise,
you are being productive, and present, not reserved or recluse,
you’re being awake and attentive, and putting your time to good use.
So when you’re in public, and you start to feel alone,
put your hands behind your head, and step away from the phone.
You don’t need to stare at your menu, or at your contact list,
just talk to one another, and learn to co-exist.
I can’t stand to hear the silence, of a busy commuter train,
when no one wants to talk through the fear of looking insane.
We’re becoming unsocial, it no longer satisfies
to engage with one another, and look into someone’s eyes.
We’re surrounded by children, who since they were born,
watch us living like robots, and think it’s the norm.
It’s not very likely you will make world’s greatest dad,
if you cant entertain a child without a using an iPad.
When I was a child, I would never be home,
I’d be out with my friends, on our bikes we would roam.
We’d ware holes in our trainers, and graze up our knees;
we’d build our own clubhouse, high up in the trees.
Now the parks are so quiet, it gives me a chill
to see no children outside and the swings hanging still.
There’s no skipping or hopscotch, no church and no steeple,
we’re a generation of idiots, smart phones and dumb people.
So look up from your phone, shut down that display,
take in your surroundings, and make the most of today.
Just one real connection is all it can take,
to show you the difference that being there can make.
Be there in the moment, when she gives you the look,
that you remember forever, as when love overtook.
The time you first hold her hand, or first kiss her lips,
the time you first disagree, but still love her to bits.
The time you don’t need to tell hundreds, about what you’ve just done,
because you want to share the moment, with just this one.
The time you sell your computer, so you can buy a ring,
for the girl of your dreams, who is now the real thing.
The time you want to start a family, and the moment when,
you first hold your baby girl, and get to fall in love again.
The time she keeps you up at night, and all you want is rest,
and the time you wipe away the tears, as your baby flees the nest.
The time your little girl returns, with a boy for you to hold,
and the day he calls you granddad, and makes you feel real old
The time you take in all you’ve made, just by giving life attention,
and how your glad you didn’t waste it, by looking down at some invention.
The time you hold your wife’s hand, and sit down beside her bed
you tell her that you love her, and lay a kiss upon her head.
She then whispers to you quietly, as her heart gives a final beat,
that she’s lucky she got stopped, by that lost boy in the street.
But none of these times ever happened, you never had any of this,
When you’re too busy looking down, you don’t see the chances you miss.
So look up from your phone, shut down those displays,
we have a finite existence, a set number of days.
Why waste all our time getting caught in the net,
as when the end comes, nothing’s worse than regret.
I am guilty too, of being part of this machine,
this digital world, where we are heard but not seen.
Where we type and don’t talk, where we read as we chat,
where we spend hours together, without making eye contact.
Don’t give in to a life where you follow the hype,
give people your love, don’t give them your like.
Disconnect from the need to be heard and defined
Go out into the world, leave distractions behind.
Look up from your phone, shut down that display,
stop watching this video, live life the real way.

That was at journalwatcher not you, you deserve the best and none of this poo

One of the things that struck me most in this vid: *"We're surrounded by children, who since they were born, who watched us living like robots and think it's the norm. It's not very likely you'll make World's Greatest Dad if you can't entertain a child without using an iPad."*
This quote is so, *so* important I can't even emphasize.
This is my promise for myself and how I'll help the world :)
P.S. I only just discovered this life lesson while watching, so that's something. Thank you Gary for posting !
Oh yeah, I saw that photo of the playchair with a freakn iPad stand attached to it. It kinda freaks me out of how far we've come..
MadJack122 Lol, so why dont you have an iphone ?
Agree ;)
For anyone attacking the video for being "anti-technology" note he is saying not to take it to the extreme! He isn't saying destroy your internet connection, he is saying remember to sometimes put down the phone and have fun.
but its cool if we attack the video for being a pile of diseased dog shit right?
Indeed!
yas!
Your a cooooooooool guy
Well actually, he's arguing that the internet results in missed opportunities for people. He just ignores the millions of love stories that started on the internet. If we're considering opportunity here, then doesn't the internet put one the potential to talk to billions of strangers and this guy cares about talking to people on the bus. Why would i want to talk to someone on the bus? He also wears the nostalgia glasses when he talks about the park. I mean, i like the park and everything, but just because you liked it, don't try and claim that it's the right way to do things.
"the time you dont have to tell hundreds for what you just done, because you want to share this moment with just this one"
Exactly

I love this guy! He is smart, now learn from him. I guess dogs won't takeover!
amen to that! i don't even have a smartphone/iphone, only a normal nokia mobile phone, even without touch screen! but I'm fine with it, I don't need whatsapp, games or apps, etc.!

It's sad how much people miss when their to busy looking down at a screen...

Fuck you
TabalugaDragon Well it is possible to do positive things on the computer and internet the overall message that you shouldn’t waste your life constantly looking down at your phone or staying home looking at meaningless social media posts is still a good one
All these years later, and I can almost recite this insightful poem verbatim. And yes, even after nearly a decade since its release, its message holds true. This poetic recitation was one of the key factors in helping me leave the social media world all those years ago. And I have never and will never return. Thank you for helping me see the light.

Oh my god same my English teacher showed us this
This video woke me up about a month ago.
I bet you were still a noob... most people that call themself hardcore are usually shitty
That is awesome! Just goes to show how powerful poetry can be!
I have been a gamer for 5 years now(on pc), I play games for over 3 hours daily I enjoy them, I go out, I do good in school, just play in moderation.
Well when it's addiction you can't just play one game :D If I play one I'll end up playing the whole day
People will say any old shit on youtube for likes eh... pretty much like this comment.
Admit it you still a noob gamer
It's a start... it has to start somewhere. Let's look at it optimistically. :)
Let's make a group and pledge we'll learn it by heart and tell it to people.Offline.
You don't have to worry about how other people receive this video. Worry about how you will respond to it, you find yourself and others will find you.
You should watch my series of short vlog films called "This Modern Life," Adorian.
Very true DJ Rhiannon ...
I watched this video when it first came out when I was 12 years old. Five years later, I’m 17, and I find myself coming back to this video. Profoundly impactful.
The video: Stop watching and go out
My assigment: Watch the video again and take notes
Right, it's so ironic!
Ironically, this will end up becoming a viral sensation all over Facebook and Twitter, and people will be looking down at their smartphones, iPads, laptops, etc to watch it.
That is why at the end he says...Look up....
I just watched and shared it from my smart phone. Lol
So? Maybe people watching it will consider looking down less in the future.
sometimes to save the world , you have to burn it first :)
There is a reason why nicotine gum is popular among smokers or viagra among older gents :) Same thing here..
Oh man... that's... DEEP! I am actually in tears...
Same ;( it was beautiful
Yep I told almost all my friends about this video!!! ;)
It's a video that is amazing I felt like crying and going out side
yep makes everybody feel bad, in a good way!! ;)
Holy crap nice rhyming bro!
Am i the only person that read that in a Bristish accent?
Mike Dai
Nope...
Nope I read it in a British accent too😂😂
Mike Dai hahaha me too (':
As a poet myself, I appreciate how you created a message and made it more digestible with poetry.
Then again, I shouldn't be complaining, there's people out there that don't even have anything...
This comment may sound pointless, I just want to know if anyone is in the same situation.
***** I know man it sucks. I literally have no kids living beside me. :(
+skrmz can you ask your parents to pick you up from a diff friends house one night a week after school? and soon enough youll start having sleepovers on weekends, and when your 14 or so, idk what age but youll be able to get public transport yourself in the evening right?
are there other hobbies you could do that are great to do by yourself? do you know what things you find interesting?
Chazza Beatrice Thank you :)
This video is now 8 years old and as poignant now as when it was first written...a beautifully crafted timeless classic
It’s a warning
This video is now 9 and a half years old, and it still brings me to tears thinking about why we allow ourselves to be sucked into a false sense of communication.
Are you even a real person
okay. the message of the video is not to throw your technology out of your car window on a busy highway, it's just relaying the fact that our generation spends too much time on the internet. of course, it is convenient when making plans, or catching up with old friends, or even finding a significant other. but the key is to limit the time spent doing these things so that the whole of humanity isn't a fat, emotionless mess. i don't know... personally, obviously, i liked the video: it was moving and gave an overall inspirational outlook on life. but judging these comments, that seems to just be me.
U are correct
I'm with you, totally. The message is simple. And it's a poem, yet some people tend to take it literally. Sad.
Dear Gary Turk,
I wanted to take a moment to express my deep appreciation for your video Look Up.

The fact that so many upset comments appear is a sign that this is touching a sore spot ;)
So true!
Oh and I almost forgot: ;)
yeah and you can see who is really really attached to their alternate universe that is their electronics by this as well
We live on a technological age, there's no escaping that fact - but I wonder if we've become too reliant on technology that it overshadows 'real life'; I think that's what this film is about - I think it's a matter of balancing 'virtual' with 'tangible' reality - man that's deep!!!
I agree with you so much.
I remembered this back then when I was 14. Now I’m 19, and this is still true asf. Ngl.
I was 16 back then, I’m 22 now 😭
I’m 14 now 😭
@Toshi Everything ok boomer,Karen.
I was 8, now I’m 14.
Man I found this after 5 years and it never left my mind
Amazing! And it's 8years old! Bet he had no idea how right he was! Loved every second! Was totally hooked!
"She then whispers to you quietly,
as her heart gives a final beat,
that she's lucky she got stopped,
by that lost boy in the street".
FUCK.
Everytime I feel like I need to get rid of a lump in my throat I come here. Those lines just make it. Every time.

The ironic thing is this anti-technology, anti-social media message wouldn't have been heard without technology and social media.
This clip is not against technology. It is against the overuse of technology There is a real world out there. Today you see people dining on a table and not talking to each other but checking their phone all the time.
The only reason this video has been made and spread around using technology, is because we ALL use technology. How else would he of reached out his message?
But if we didn't have technology and social media this video wouldn't need to exist because there wouldn't be this problem.
Alex Wright a dream within a dream within a dream!!!
You get to the source to destroy the source.... They needed the technology and social media because that's all people are paying attention to.
What a tear jerker. My Mum died 6 months ago. But she lived life to its fullest and she was loved. Fantastic video
I am glad that i had a childhood without technology.
Me2
ok
How about we stop arguing in the comments and just accept that we need these devices but don't need to be have them in our hands constantly?
That's the point here. Keep your phone on, ready but put away so that you can be a social person while still having the ability to make contact with somebody you need to or receive an important message or call.
The point is to find a balance. Not to throw it away.
Thank you. Finally someone gets it. Moderation is key. Excessiveness is the current problem. Put your phone back in your pocket, not the garbage can.
Well said
My thoughts exactly, it is ok to own a smartphone. It is all about when and what for do you use it.

thank god some one have a brain
Putting aside the irony of the only way for this video to reach people is by being posted on social media sites...
Great message.
Ironic but it makes sense seeing as we are the target audience.
But its the only way people will see it. Then maybe it will hit home. Maybe but probably not.
5 years later, i have returned.
This forgotten lesson, has now been relearned.
I must thank RUclips recommended,

Pink Floyd avatar and stupid pseudo-intellectual poem RUclips comment. I bet you think you were born in the wrong generation.
read this in his voice
People are so quick to say negative things. Not once did he say Facebook, or social media is BAD. He's saying that the addiction to social media is bad. If you're not addicted to social media then this video isn't for you now, is it? And yes he's using social media - how else is he supposed to reach people who are addicted TO social media? Write it in the newspapers? >.>
rightly so...
What I don't understand is how over 15,000 people can dislike a video like this!
Dylan Jackson Because stupid pollutes our gene pool.
this is an amazing video, so I'm not going to respond to your comments anymore. :)
It's pretentious.
Joe Howard Yeah, I knew something bugged me about it.
Dylan Jackson Because it's such a typical, pretentious 9gag-generation video that is basically designed to go viral. Bit of a conflicting message, isn't it?
I wonder what % of these views were on mobile?
The first time I saw this was on my phone a few days ago. Right now i am here to share this video with my friends.

The problem isn't technology -- it's how it's used.
Technology in itself is a great thing but getting isolated for saying the wrong thing on facebook is wrong.
i agree with u
***** Actually, Marijwana has health benefits & hones creativity. The problem isn't the drug.
30 million views and a great message
shame it wont change a thing.
I will change, because of that video
Stefan Reimer haha, yeah right. you won't change a fucking bit.
it will change people i gave my phone away case of this and i think there are a few people who would have done the same
indeed it won't change a bit.
even if it's only change one person out of 30 millions it's done its job.
Still remember this after nearly half my life has passed. Only 11-12 years ago, but all the more memorable and relevant
Described todays society very well with a very important message to the youth 👍🤫🧏♂️
***** Yes sadly that is true...
Acharged Well different people have different situations and opinions. I think what I want to think you think what you want to think. ;)
This made me cry... It's so true and powerful.
And still you're on your phone/computer in order to make that comment -.-
Let's just hope these are the last comments we post
nicothecheeco Umm so are you? LOL Fail.
nicothecheeco I'm a 14 year old girl, and I don't have a phone. All my friends have phones. This video is the main reason I don't want a phone. I like talking to people face to face. I do have my laptop ( which i'm using right now) but that's all.
abbysally2000 i think that's a good way to think. but what if someone needs to contact you? having a phone is convenient, but not when you keep using it
I had a friend that was like this.
Me: "let's go for a walk"
Friend: "no I don't want to I am on Facebook."
Yeah especially if your friends over at your place and you wanna go for a walk. Nothing better than a nice refreshing walk in the brezzy wind :D
Had
10 Years later and still returning again and again. The perfect reminder. Thank you.
This made me cry. I'm genuinely terrified for us, and I've been this way for awhile for the very reasons expressed in this poem. What have we become?
Same :'( I'm so worried about the future for us. We need people like you to raise alert. If only world leaders wanted the best for us.
***** God, I hope you're wrong.
...then again, I hope I'm wrong, too.
Are you people kidding me? Oh god, like I want to talk to people around me. Where do you live that this prospect sounds exciting?
Jesse Sheeran Where do you live since it doesn't?
TheBlekCorpse You're right. Everything in the first world is dependent on the internet for it to run which more than anything shows that we are the slaves of technology, not it's master.
"I think it'll make this world a better place." Yeah sure, it's because internet that WW2 started...
Why did my teacher assign this on online school

Hamza Stitan You don't say?
that was funny . if i was not in youtube i propably missed it .and hear something stupipd from some one who happened to be close when i Looked up .
The sad thing is that, most people will watch, will like, will share, but still' manage to ignore the message.
the funny thing is that to like and share, we need to use social media lol.
Illtell ulater Don't exaggerate. I mean, use technology, it's a huge part of today's life. Just learn the healthy balance. Outside, walking, at a park, at school, at work, at dinner, leave your phone in your pocket.
Ironic this is posted on social media, but it's the only way any of us could see it. We aren't looking up.
Android phones are just as guilty.
So you're saying I should hold my phone up higher?
this video is exactly where it needs to be
Yes, it's exactly where it needs to be. It's a lesson for all of us addicted to the social media. If you live normal life, you don't have to see this, so it's on the right place.
bla bla bla...
We live in a world when losing an iphone is more dramatic than loosing your virginity
You perfectly summed up the situation
Losing your virginity SHOULD NOT even be dramatic...
an iphone is expensive, useful and important whereas virginity is an entirely useless social construct with no real meaning at all
I used to have an iPhone that I used way to much
Payed no attention to my friends or family and such
I was to busy with my games till morning till dark
Was to busy when my sister asked if I could go to the park
Laughing at slender man instead of my friends
Don't listen to my date, I had messages to send
I'm watching television, sponge bob and Patrick
When I could be watching my grandmother, who has been ill and sick
This video taught me from when i first watched it all
That I don't need technology to make me happy at all
I should live life to the fullest, take my girlfriend to the zoo
Go to the park, watch a firework show, there's tons of things to do
I typed this on an iPad, but for now, I'll put it away
I bought a new dog, and I have to walk him today
And while I'm outside, I'll drive to my girlfriends in my big white truck
I'm proposing tomorrow, please wish me luck
Good luck hope she says yes!👍😊

There is nothing inherently damaging with social media and/or digital technology.
It's not so much a matter of *how much* we use it as is, *how we use it.*

Carlos Andino have you ever heard of i books? Or audio books?

Who says this the way to live your life? As long as you're happy it really doesn't matter.
Like you are really happy staying on a phone or a computer...
MatewGamer2 not taking away from the fact that most of it is true, but if the person is truly happy then so be it. It sounds like a forced opinion to me is all.
***** Well I do notice on myself that I'm a lot happier with people around me, I just suck at socializing ... And nobody wants to talk to ... So yeah

Anything viral has dislikes, that's just how the world works
People are just ignorant... not even by accident, but on purpose. Let them take a look into the mirror and they'll see all the imperfections they never wanted to realize. Nobody likes to be the guilty one so they hit dislike to hide and cover up their faults.

This video will be shared across all social media platforms... But nothing will change.
So true, so sad.
Totally agree, John! - wonderful message, very poignant, very powerful. Would like to see the opposite video to this, though, and see how much joy and togetherness social media can bring. Tempted to work on something!
When atleast one person changes his or her life because of this video, it will be a change. A change that was worth all the effort.
For all the haters-
This video isnt asking to completely stop technology
Its just asking people to limit the time spent on devices
*One shouldnt take things so damn literally
Yo man, you are genius. you have all the time to reply each and everyone's comment. Still u spent less time. I was shocked. That was something that inspired me :D lol
Yeah you are right. I do think technology is great in many ways of course. I decided to only use Facebook Messenger now since you don't need to log in and see everyone's status, etc , you only need to use it for private messaging. I feel better without fully logging on already (yet I enjoy RUclips and looking at informative blogs, etc).
sunil dhakal I replied to everyone's comment huh? nice observation
You do realise that dhakal comes very near to sound like dhakkan? XD
Wessex90 you put it up well. The internet is a place for so much knowledge obtained so quickly and we can yet limit time spent on it :D
Rahul Andro Thank you Rahul :-). We only need to limit our time on the net then we are all good. We just need a good walk everyday and interact with people from time to time(even if you are just at a shop counter buying milk).
When you are busy looking down... You don't see the chances you miss.... ❤️....
This video will never lose its relevance..
Thank you I feel even worse I already felt like I'll be alone forever
ikr
Your not alone you have your family
What he means is someone to love a lot
CALVIN NGUYEN Yes but that's no reason to put someone through a guilt trip.
This is the ugly truth of social media. You have managed to convey that through a beautiful poetry. Incredible work!
quiero volverme a los 90 y los 2000
Ironically...through social media.
Give people your LOVE, don't give 'em your LIKE.
*likes*
I first learned about this video in highschool back in 2013. And it sticks and remains with me till this day. Hits too close to reality
speechless.
This has changed my life when I saw it.
Me too
agreed
Wow 32 plus ones
how can anyone dislike this? what he says is 100% true.
But dont make this some kind of global issue that we're all suffering from, cause we're simply not
Yvar Lagerzand
Yeah, right on!
I saw this video a few years ago, but I just watched it again and this couldn't be more relevant than it is today. It literally made me cry🤯
Well now I'm depressed. Time to spend the rest of the night watching cat videos.
