from George Stevens: A Filmmaker's Journey...Whenever someone argues that Katharine Hepburn isn't the greatest actress of all time, I just say two words: ALICE ADAMS
Few actors could approach her range. There wasn't any type of role she couldn't take on. In my opinion, she is uniquely talented. Mind you, I am a huge fan of Bette Davis as well.
I read the book and saw the movie. I agree with Miss Hepburn and the director: the ending of the novel is stronger and better and more realistic and you might even say it's more uplifting.
Hattie McDaniel was superb in this film, as was the entire cast. “Alice Adams” has my favorite performances by Fred MacMurray, Frank Albertson, Fred Stone, and Katharine Hepburn!
She had a 20 year relationship with Spencer Tracy. He could not marry her because he was Catholic and could not divorce his wife. These days it would not stop people. That was a different time.
Tracy lived separate from his family for years before he met Hepburn. His son John was born deaf and Mrs. Tracy was involved with opening a school for deaf children. Hepburn married young and vowed never to remarry saying it was a selfish thing to do for an actor.
@@dalekdx You know a lot about Katherine Hepburn. Why didn't she have children? You know the pill didn't come out until the 1960s. She probably had a few abortions.
4/30/16: KH was an interesting actress, kind of "masculin-ish" ( if there were such a word, SHE would be the definition ). There are several of her movies I have come to enjoy watching, PHILADELPHIA STORY, SUMMERTIME and, of course ALICE ADAMS. It's my understanding that she and Spencer Tracey had been "secret lovers" for years . But wasn't he a married man? I'll just leave it there for now. Like many who wrote in the comments here, I, too, do not think that KH was the BEST actress of all time; I liked Betty Davis and even Hattie McDaniels (although she always played maid roles ), Marjorie Main, Claudette Colbert and many more.....the list goes on and on😎👍
Katharine Hepburn won four Oscars for best actress which is still the most any actor or actress has ever won. A lot of us fans of Hepburn love her movies and love her for her fearless, intelligent, independent, tough but vulnerable, and humorous personality. She lived a very fascinating life and she did things her way.
Stage Door, Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, Keeper of the Flame, Adam's Rib, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, The Lion In Winter, The African Queen, and On Golden Pond are my favorite Katharine Hepburn performances. She's not THE BEST but she is one of the best actresses of all time... Like, I don't think I could ever see any other actress play Eleanor of Acquitane other than her. She OWNED. THAT. ROLE. I love Bringing Up Baby because, in some ways, she was aware of her background and where she came from and was able to throw class out the window to create adorable comedy. That scene where the whole cast is in jail and Katharine saves everybody by talking like a female gangster 😂.
Katharine Hepburn is a wonderful actress but she isn't the greatest actress of all time. First, there is no such thing. They're too diverse and varied. But I think that Barbara Stanwyck and Bette Davis would both rank higher in my book.
The dinner scene is absolute perfection.
everything about Alice Adams , book and movie , is BRILLIANT ! masterpiece from masterpiece !

BARBARA STANWYCK !
that was my favorite movie of her.

Hattie McDaniel steals this movie. Her comedic timing is impeccable.
Alice Adams is her best work. A very funny movie even today.

@@dalekdx The movie Guess who is coming for dinner is every white person's nightmare.
@@danieltadros3262 That's probably why Hepburn wanted to do it.

"ALICE ADAMS" IS ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES EVER MADE.
-Brian.
Fred McMurray is very handsome in this picture. I wonder how old was he?

I agree!!
If there’s no such thing, how can you rate one above another?
@@ImVee10 I agree! It doesn't make sense! Like, if you say there's no such thing, stand by your word!
Perhaps it's just me, but I absolutely hated this film.
