(1/7) JOHN MUIR TRAIL 2022: Happy Isles to Cathedral Lake
HTML-код

- I’m starting out on the John Muir Trail!! I’m going SOBO (southbound) and doing it solo. In Part One of my JMT series, you’ll see me struggling while backpacking. Happy Isles was full of smoke, but Cathedral Lake was pretty once it stopped thundering! Backpacking the John Muir Trail was a challenge, but I wanted to show you the reality of the JMT in 2022!

What is Road Trip Brew-S-A?
To challenge myself and live life to the fullest, I am trying to reach all 50 US states while living in my minivan. In each state, I will
•go on an outdoor adventure
•get involved in a good cause
•drink a local beer
What is Beer in Beautiful Places?
Hi, I’m Maddie! Celebrating an outdoor adventure with a beer has been a long-time tradition for me, and I wanted to create a platform for like-minded folks to come together. In my videos, I cover all types of adventures and review beer! Topics include day hiking, kayaking, travel, thru-hiking, and life on the road. In short, if you would describe yourself as an outdoorist, outdoorsman, outdoorswoman, hiker trash, nomad, or dirtbag, come on along, this is the channel for you! Welcome and cheers!
Sad to see the fire damage along the trail. Last time I was at Cathedral Lakes was early July around 20 years ago, there was a lot of snow around. It was hard to stay on the trail. We witnessed an avalanche on the wall across the lake from us. There was ice on half of the lake surface. Most of our party jumped in the water anyway. Fastest dip in the lake I ever took. So pretty there. Thanks for the video. I love the Yosemite backcountry. I’m glad you got your permit!!
Lots of beers to taste cause that was a extremely large amount of beautiful places you have shared, thanks Maddie
Glad you liked!
Thanks for sharing the start of your journey.
Hey Maddie your doing great and the photos of the stars where as beautiful as you are great work.
Thank you!! And thanks for watching!
Came back to this hike after binge watching your AT hike. You have such a soothing style and an eye for catching details.
Thank you so much!! I'm so glad you enjoy my videos!
Way to go Maddie! Go out of your comfort zone and concour your fears.
Best line "mantain some dignity"
Crack me up!!
Thank you!!
Yosemite is one of my favorite places, I’ve been there many times and the first time I took my son camping with me (4 months pregnant solo camping) I also took him many times after. I hiked to the top of the Yosemite falls in my younger days. Welcome to my beautiful state and I hope you have a great time. Don’t forget Sequoia or the coastal Redwoods. Death Valley is breathtaking too but too hot right now. You remind me of myself when I was younger, I still solo tent camp but my hikes are limited to maybe 5 miles, I’m 65. Just got back from a 3 week camping trip, I caught the heavy monsoon rains lol, luckily my tent kept me dry. That animal in your water is a dragonfly larvae. Get yourself a Swayer mini filter, use a bandanna to filter little residue from the water and then apply the filter and drink from it.
That’s awesome that you have so many wonderful memories in Yosemite! I’ve already been to sequoia and absolutely loved it, plus the last part of the JMT goes through there, so I got to go back this year! I’m hoping to go to Death Valley when it gets colder this year!
@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces I’m in California thus I’ve explored it a lot and although I live in the mountains I still go tent camping all the time, sometimes even locally. I’m in Big Bear. Lots of hidden gems in this gorgeous state as well as the obvious. Follow your dreams, the sky is the limit.
That first day on the JMT is brutal, kudos for pushing through. And all food tastes better after a day like that, bugs be damned... :)
Thank you! It definitely was one of those days to just get through!
Great video. While you was having a hard time you made the best of it. Amazing shots!
Thank you!! I tried my best to!
Very nice hike and views!!! Thank you for sharing!!! Much love to ya! 😊
Thank you! Glad to hear you enjoyed!
Very pretty hike ❤❤
Wow that looks like an amazing hike so far!! You rock gerl 🤙
Thank you!! Can’t wait to show ya more!
@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces I’m looking forward to it 😊
Another great video Maddie! TY for keeping it real! Can wait to see the next one😊!
Thank you!! 💜
Here following your interview with Kyle. I'm a big fan of the Sierra and am looking forward to your perspective on the JMT.
Wow you could really see the smoke from forest fires!! Than seeing previous wildfire scars, so sad to think of all the wildfires that happens yearly. Thanks for taking us along on your journey!! This looks rough or a lil difficult, but the personal feeling of accomplishment at the end sounds so rewarding!! 🍻 🥳
Thanks! It was bit of a bummer seeing fire's effects, but there are some species that benefit from high heat or the thinning out of other species. It's not pretty, but I tried to keep that in mind!
oh my gosh that is a beautiful hike!
It was awesome!
You are such a trooper Maddie! I love the way you share the good and the bad! Would love to know more about your gear for this trip.
Okay I can do that! I was already planning a JMT “what I wish I knew” info video, and gear would fit well in that!
Keeping it real. Love it!
Thank you! No point in only saying the good stuff, in my opinion!
Just found your channel, it’s inspiring! I can’t wait to watch the rest! Looks beautiful there, I’d love to hike a long distance trail in the US. I’d just have to get used to the wildlife 😂 Love from the UK ❤
Oh that’s great! So glad you found me and you’re enjoying my videos!! And yes, we do have some dangerous wildlife to look out for!
It was so beautiful I enjoy the hike with you.Have a great week Maddie.
Thanks for coming along!!
Very cool adventure! One of your short vids popped up in IG for me, so now I'm checking out your travels. Nice job editing for the Story.
I can relate to the need to share like this, as I have also done a lot of hikes and explorations alone. Somehow that camera becomes a real hiking buddy, or at least a portal for sharing.
Yeah, I know exactly what you mean! Whenever I see something pretty or have an interesting thought, I go straight to “oh I can film this!” It’s truly amazing that we’re able to share moments in this way!
Really cool what you're doing with this trail and the van traveling.
Awww thank you!! Just trying to live life to the fullest!
beautiful trail, it's great you video these trails, almost seems like we're there with you enjoyed the video
Oh yay!! That’s my goal, to make the viewer feel like they’re with me!
Thank you 🙏
Just found ya . Your a joy to follow , I was hoping to do this trail , thank you for your honesty about the journey. Love the brain load 🤣.
I’m subbing so I won’t miss any . Enjoy the journey.👍😇🇺🇸
Yay! Thank you so much for joining the journey!
been there and really done that! I accompanied young chinese hiker along that trail. when we crossed that bridge and rounded the corner we saw up close and personal a very big bobcat!!! elevation can be tough. key is going slow carefully of sand and rocks slipping. afternoon sun bakes you. key is water, water, water. stay hydrated is extremely necessary. it's outrageous beautiful. as you hike in further keep n eye ear open for rattlesnakes. they come out at night evening time. be careful around rocks especially, if you reach for something use a stick. great travels safe travels. it totally worth it. also I carry a good whistle, when phone service is down. enjoy be safe. jim
Thanks, Jim! I just finished the trail on Thursday and definitely agree with all of this advice! Luckily I didn’t ever encounter a bobcat!
This is incredible. The shots, the planning, and the great editing are all inspiring. Enjoy the awesome life you have! Whimpi, Indonesia.
Oh thank you!! Im so glad you enjoy it!!
What an awesome hike!
Thanks!
I was on the other side of the Sierras when you were hiking this. Just pretend I waved at you!
No way!! That's so cool!
Just wow!
🥰
The flies/bugs/gnats are added protein--FREE!
Yeah… that’s what they say… but still 🤢 to me!
I got back recently from my SOBO trip; I started on 7/24 from Happy Isles. That extremely smoky morning on 7/25 was rough and I definitely understand how you felt!
I started on 7/25!! Idk if I said that in there or if you just knew it by how it looked, but if you did, you’re spot on!
Very beautiful trail
Thanks! And it only got better and better!
Thank you 🙏
Wow so beautiful
Amazing scenery, and quite a bit of elevation gain.
Yeah! The elevation gain was CRAZY!
Awesome Maddie !
Thanks! ☺️
Beautiful stars!
Thanks! I had so many good photos it was hard to choose!
@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces I'm happy cause you took the time to answer me, thank you!! And continue to do what you love .,🤗
That thunder must have sound amazing against those mountains! Was it hard breathing with the fires?
Wait til you hear the thunder from when I was by Evolution Lake!! It was supernatural sounding! And I didn’t notice a difference, but I also wasn’t paying that much attention to it
it is always brutal starting in the valley. last summer I did a two week trip from happy isles to tuolome meadows resupplied and returned to the valley. that first section from happy isles to illilouette creek was one of the cruelest hikes of my life.
Glad you thought so too! It kicked my butt!
no hot beers to drink? heheh...pretty trail!
No but I buy one at a store in the next video!
How did you fare going by yourself with bears? That scares me so much. Grizzlies specifically
No grizzlies in California! Just black bears that scare easily
@Beer in Beautiful Places thank you for the reply! Have you dealt with grizzly territory before?
The west is the best
love stars at night,? need to check out Joshua Tree National Park at night. it's awesome.
I’ve actually been a few times when I lived in Southern California! I love it there!
New sub ! Liked 👍🔥😊
Yay!!! I’m honored to have you join us!
Your hair looks really pretty.
Really? Thank you!! Sometimes when I have it up all day, it goes into really nice waves
People came to the west coast in covered wagons
Beer Stipend!
Omg yay!!!! Thank you so much!
Omg yay!!!! Thank you so much!
I started at Happy Isles on Sept 3rd 2022. It was a record heat wave at Yosemite. I climb the falls with 45lbs on in 104° temp. It's definitely a climb. I took 28 days and finished on Mt. Whitney Oct 1st 2022. It was an amazing experience!!
Nice work! I'm surprised it was 104 in September. I bet you had plenty of cold, too! Sounds tough. Congrats on finishing!
Looks like brains 😅😅😅😅
Halloween party idea!
How heavy is your back pack?
Beautiful! How is the solar panel working out so far?
It was good once I learned the best way to attach it was tying it on top of the pack with shoe laces! I got 40-60% charge for my phone most days!
Where do you park your van when you're on an extended trek?
On this trail, I left it at mammoth ski resort, where a local told me no one would notice and bears aren’t usually a problem. While I didn’t have much food in their, I still had a fridge and dishes that smelt like food
Always tell myself that a bug is extra protein.
Haha yep! And dirt is just trail spice!
Hip femur is only ball and socket joint us humans have 😃
Interesting!
come on, bugs are protein . . . wait until you get to the Bighorn ( well, you already did, but . . . .) and the cricket buffet.
Haha that’s one way to look at it!
Hi..re: pack waist belt..I think it should be below top of hip and above astubachelum is ball and socket connects your femur..def not above top of hip bone. Best pack will have stainless air plane adjustable quick release buckle and wide thick waist band .as I'm sure you know..Kelty packs..used to have that. Nice to see you..Dave
I heard it was supposed to put the weight on your hips! I’ll try that next time, though!
@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces just above your ball n socket joint or widest part of hips..snug it up. The waist band is wide their I'm sure cause that's where our sciatic nerve is also. Ty for seeing me M😃
I hope you have water filter with you . You always need to have water on you.
Wow that was beautiful hikes and thank you for bringing us with you.
Did any one see baby Bigfoot running at 18.2 .
It was a Chupacabras.😂
Yeah I definitely had a water filter!! Funny story, I actually end up losing it in part 5 of this series, but I’ll save the story for when that video comes out!
