  • With the timing chain gear on it was time to fit the timing chain tensioner and the the timing cover. After that the oil pump can be fitted followed by the engine sump.

John Thanks for your guidance. I think I have lashed up as I just held the tensioner against the chain in the released position while I fitted the bolts. I have not fitted the head yet so will order some new gaskets and follow you advice. thanks

Thank you for these videos, although I wish they weren't time lapsed. Process that you think may be boring to watch may actually be very helpful to see in real time. There's also a ZEN-like experience to precision assembly. Yes, watching 100 oil pan bolts being tightened could be time lapsed, but most other process should be left alone. Just my opinion. Oh... fantastic timing using Moody Blues. Very well done.

Hi Karl - you sound like my mate Huibert! - Just film it all and post it on RUclips! Actually, this part of it has been fun but it is a lot of work. Each Video takes about 4 hrs to do from the start of the editing to then uploading it. It is more work than it might appear. I have no idea how long it would take to upload a 3 hr work video but I suspect it is 12 times longer than a 15 min video. I am trying to create a balance of sharing my progress, challenges, mistakes, lessons learned and the overall effort to record it and post the videos.

John I see the core plug on the left side of the engine block is set near the timing cover mating surface. Is there a spec for how deep in the block it can set? I screwed that plug in until I felt some resistance, considerably deeper than yours as that is where it was when I took it out.

Hylomar-blue; where would we be without this magic stuff?

Was that also used for the timing chain cover? It looked to be the black type that sets. (I need to replace my timing chain cover gasket soon and i'm looking to use the blue magic😄)

Just watched this again to understand how the hydraulic tensioner works and how to get it in the right place. Not sure I have got mine right. How do you release it.

Its best to follow the instructions in the manual on this but I will try to give an outline here - the tensioner block works on oil pressure pushing on a piston that applies a force to the chain. For installation and removal, the piston needs to be parked or released - this is done by turning the allen screw that is located on the left side slanted surface (as you look at the valve timing chain. I forget which way you have to turn it to park the piston or release it, this is in the manual. If you dont release the piston after assembly then the oil pressure will not act on the chain via the piston. I hope this helps
