@@iAmSkyro1 listen one thing I have to tell you yeah bruce lee is the greatest martial arts of all time no description on it but even chuck norris is somewhere on same level he is a black belt in tang so do brazilian jiu-jitsu and judoIn 1967, he won the Sparring Grand Champions at the S. Henry Cho's All American Championship, and won it again the following year. In 1968, he won the Professional Middleweight Karate champion title, which he held for six consecutive years. In 1969, he won Karate's triple crown for the most tournament wins of the year.
Sometimes with my 14 year old son I have to explain to him that there was no cgi or ‘green screen’ back then. They actually filmed this in the Roman Coliseum. Effects had to be practically done as opposed to computers. Bruce was so fast on camera that they had to slow the camera down to catch his movements and it took 3 weeks to shoot that fight scene

While the bits before and after the fight were shot at the actual Coliseum, the fight was actually shot in a studio set at the Golden Harvest film studios in Hong Kong. During this what you see in the background is actually a painting.
In response to why both Bruce and Chuck are so sweaty before even attacking each other, this fight was actually shot in Golden Harvest Film Studios in Hong Kong, in an area painted and made to look like part of the Coliseum in Rome. Hong Kong can get incredibly humid!
Yes, fastest movie camera 1972 can 70frame per second... that´s is reason why not enought. Bruce is so fast. Every moving is like a slowmotion. Jackie Chan films we can see real speed to HongKong movie and that is 50-70% to Bruce Lee speed. 🤣Today nothing problem get fullhd 240frame/per second

The guy had a killer 6-pack and I gotta respect the guy for him training so hard and worked his ass off how he kept in shape. For Bruce, the most important aspect of his weight training routine was that he could still train his martial arts and practice endurance/cardio training on the other days.
Bruce himself suggested to train at most, once every other day or 3 days per week, with an extra rest day at the weekend.
Plus he was pretty strong for a man of his size :-)

Truly one of the cinemas most legendary fight scenes. a true classic and up there with the very best of them. Not only must lee have been one genuinely and exceptionally gifted martial artist but one truly gifted fight coreographers and one who was undoubtedly in a class of his own. Such a pity we didn't see what else he had to offer. No doubt he would have taken the world of action cinamatic to a totally different level. The pieces of celluloid we have all. seen were undoubtedly just a warm up and just small fraction of what he could he could have left us.

This wasn't filmed in the Roman Coliseum it was on set. The only time they filmed on location in Rome was for the exterior street shots.

I found out about the fight being in a soundstage at Golden Harvest from Bey Logan’s (and Jon Benn’s) audio commentary from the Hong Kong Legends DVD release. When I saw _The Way of the Dragon_ in a 4K restoration in a cinema on the Saturday just gone (29/7/2023) parts of the background are very clearly paintings.

Nah. Lee believed in simplicity and directness. They’re 2 of the guiding principles of his JKD. If he could finish you in one kick (which did happen), he’d do it.

To answer your question about sweating, kicks and hardcore punches really get the blood pumping as they wanted it to. Not to mention the full body stretch, this is why Yoga is also considered a workout, is massive tension on the muscles in order to make them loosen up all that energy does bring up a sweat.

Interesting that you said that there was no way Chuck Norris could beat Bruce Lee. By that time, Norris was the world Karate champion, so, it says a lot about Bruce Lee. A lot of haters claim Lee was "just an actor" but lots of the martial arts champions and authorities like Joe Lewis and Dan Inosanto stated clearly Bruce Lee was not only an extremely skilled fighter, but also the most influential martial artist of his generation. It was Joe Lewis, considered by many as the father as kickboxing, who borrowed Lee's concept that martial arts should never be rigid and narrow, but merged into one single style.
Chuck himself said Bruce was an awesome martial artist.
I think the reason Bruce is getting kicked at the beginning, is so he can gauge his opponent's (Norris's) level and technique.

Well this was filmed in Rome so it probably was hot as hell hehe and it isn't green screen 😊. Also the footwork Bruce does in the fight was influenced by Muhammad Ali. Bruce Lee used to study tapes of Ali fights and liked Ali's footwork

No they didn't. Bruce's late son Brandon said in one of his last interviews that the fight scene took place in a sound stage in Hong Kong. He was there at time. The cat was the Lee family's pet and the car that pulls up at the end was theirs as well. The exterior shot were of the actual coliseum, but the fight scene took place in Hong Kong.

"Why is he so shaken up..." People didn't kill so indiscriminately, back then, the way they do in movies today, where hundreds or thousands of people die in a 20 minute scene. Death was used for a purpose, in the story, in older movies.

For everyone who says/believes that this actually took place in the actual Roman Coliseum...no it didn't. In his final interview before he was killed, Brandon Lee confirmed that the fight scene between his dad, Bruce and Chuck Norris took place on a sound stage in Hong Kong. He was actually there at the time. He also confirmed that both the cat and the car at the end of the movie belonged to his family. His mother still owned that car at the time that he did that interview with Black Belt Magazine.
The parts where Bruce Lee is chasing Norris were actually filmed in the coliseum but not the actual fight.

That is definitely not a green screen that's the real coliseum Bruce lee wanted that
It’s not a green-screen (plus in those days it would’ve been blue-screen - not that a Hong Kong production like this could afford that kind of thing anyway) but, while the bits before and after the fight were shot at the actual Coliseum in Rome (albeit without official permission!), this fight was shot on a soundstage back in Hong Kong so the background has a lot of bits that are actually paintings (maybe bits are photographs) to make it look like part of the Coliseum.
The backdrop is a backlit cyc. Or cyclorama.

The question he was asked specifically referenced "Way of the Dragon" and he said he was on set during the coliseum scene the whole time.
Bob Wall claimed it was filmed in the coliseum, but Bob (who sat on my instructor's black belt testing panel in the 1970s) was a business and marketing man. He tended to exaggerate some things a time or two or three. His godson, Freddie Prinze Jr. has said on his podcast that Bob would tell him growing up that he trained Bruce, not trained with or under, but trained him. He was also arrested and charged with some pretty serious charges in the 1990s that resulted in some jail time and loss of his real estate license. Convictions that resulted in Chuck Norris paying $206,000 in restitution to the victims on Wall's behalf.
So I'm gonna have to take Brandon side over Bob's on this one. He was just a kid at the time, but I'm sure he had plenty of photos and of course his mom, Linda to keep the memories fresh.

The light in the place is weird, you can see the sun falling all over the center of the coliseum, but they fighted in the inside of the laterals so it almost looks like a green screen on the back.
But, back in 72 there was no screens, motion capture, anything. It camed with movies like Star Wars, Blade Runner and others from the 80's.
It was filmed in Hong Kong. Brandon Lee confirmed it in his final interview before he died.

Was just sayin hun. Didnt mean to be rude. My bad. Sittin watchin alot of these reactions. Seems yall moss alot. From talkin. The cat played a part in understanding. Example...when it was playin with the ball symbolized bruce "playin" with chuck. When he switched to chinese boxing. (On his toes). Toyd with him. At the end bruce should his head as if to say, dont do it. Youve lost. But chuck...being as martial artist do, charged in. Knowin he would die. You see the hurt in Bruce's face as he kneeled. That scene carries more meanin then ppl catch.
Whatever you do boo, don't get wrapped up taking these movie fight scenes so seriously like they're the real thing. A lot of people make that mistake. It's all choreography.

The "No fight scences..." or the part where they snuck in and "made some of the movie"...I didn't get detailed, but they did enter...when Bruce went in looking for Chuck...Chuck was up high looking down and at one point Bruce low side kicked a gate in disgust...but, in short I typed nothing in error; minus the typos, of course.
