The two things I love most about this episode... First: Ben intentionally giving John a barely passable accent when he’s trying to fool the Peacekeepers. Second: it sets up the situation for the next episode, where my number one favorite Farscape character(who I also consider to be the greatest, and most three dimensional, science fiction antagonist of all time) is finally introduced.
I love how so many fans over the years made fun of Ben's accent without realizing that it was entirely deliberate-unlike say, David Boreanaz' (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) horrific "Irish" accent. Ben's wife is English and he had lived in the UK for a number of years so he can do much better than this. As one fan put it, it's not that Ben Browder doesn't know how to do a good British accent...it's that John Crichton doesn't-because John isn't a professional actor. Of course why John would need a British accent when everybody around him has an Australian one is usually just skipped over. :)
@@Shadowman4710 Makes me wonder, do the translator microbes give everyone an Aussie accent in Crichton's head?

@@Shadowman4710 well she's Australian but I think she's lived in a few different places, plus a lot of Australian actors tone down or tweak their accents to get taken seriously overseas!
I love that Ben Browder did "Peacekeeper" British accent in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 as a homage to Farscape which Guardians was heavily inspired by. Most people (including my husband) just thought he couldn't do a good accent 😄
Both my favourite characters are coming up...
The subtle transition from self contained stories in each episode to a full blown story arc occurs here. Enjoy nerve. Can't wait for next weds.

And here we go...
John murdering that Peacekeeper Lieutenant was a bit shocking at the time, and something the network wasn't all that keen on. Of course they're able to cover it by having him be under the influence of the virus, but if you go back and look at the previous 17 episodes, this is the first time that John has actually killed anybody. It's also the first time he's put on a PK uniform. At any rate, this is an excellent episode that really sets up the rest of the season.
Ben Browser studied acting at the Central School of Drama in London. So that’s where he picked up his British accent 😊
His wife is also British and she actually appeared in several Farscape episodes. Ben was also in an episode of Doctor Who.
As an American, I can't comment on the quality of John Crichton's accent but the actor Ben Browder is married to an English actress, Francesca Buller who he met in drama school in London, so he certainly had some real exposure to work with. Fun fact: she has some guest appearances in Farscape, usually as a heavily made up alien.
farscape's always been great but this is when it steps up a notch, keep watching, it only gets better from here
Ben's British accent is so clear because he's been married to a British actress since 1989 (the Farscape pilot aired in March 99).

This episode is fantastic - it's one of my favorites from season one! So great to see how much you're enjoying this show and how well you understand all the characters 😊
It's such a bonkers show but the actors completely sell it. It wears its heart on its sleeve a lot of the time. Australian sci fi is often overlooked but they did some of the kids series I really enjoyed. Funnily enough some of the cast got together again for Stargate and did a spoof version of Farscape inside an episode of Stargate!
John's Peacekeeper accent is hilarious considering Peacekeepers all have Australian accents but then he puts on a British accent for some reason 🤣
Well they all have issues with the Peacekeeper accents cos the original idea was to model it on Claudia and she's pretty idiosyncratic. I think there's some banter on that during one of the commentaries.
This entire universe has an Australian accent, except for John. Of course John is culturally conditioned into believing bad guy commanders speak english.
@@Carabas72 Lol - Well it's not really Australian either cos bits of Claudia's English grannie keep breaking through and there's some New Zealand as well. But yes all Big Bads sound English.
It was filmed in Australia and most of the actors are Australian so I think it was just easier that way. Some of the accents are jarringly Australian and I'm saying that as an Aussie 😂 Claudia Black does have a pretty neutral accent though, it's definitely not immediately obvious as Australian.
@@laurashepherd2479 I'd say it was more odd than neutral! I mean I love it and she is great at changing it but it's got fascinating mixtures that she often just runs with.

Aaand after many weeks of slowly chugging up the incline, we're at the top of the rollercoaster, about to speed down the big dipper!
This episode is probably a homage to 'The Thing' (which itself was based on a short story called 'Who Goes There?') The scene where everyone is getting tested is especially blatant.

I was freaked out when I saw the second thing that had the actor Jamie Bamber. He played Apollo in Battlestar Galactica (another good show you should watch) and in that show he has a normal American accent. I had no idea he was English until I saw him in something else where he had his natural English accent.
And so it begins...
If you are a fan of Ben Browder's British accent, listen out for it in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, you'll instantly know which of the Sovereign he is.
Well...here we go , triggered every frelling story arc afterwards. This episode was a clear referance to John Carpanter's classic sci-fi horror movie "The Thing (1982) , especially acid test scene

A fun episode that leads in to Farscape’s first two-parter (which is a knockout).
The crew were so unfair to John in this episode. His plan was a good one and he was doing a very good job pulling it off. It was only because of Rygel and Chiana that it fell apart.
Bear in mind that being captured and tortured by peacekeepers was a very traumatic experience for them. Relieving that, even if it's fake, is something they desperately want to avoid.

I really love your Expressions when you are enjoying an Episode. By the way, did you know when the original script writer was trying to come up with a name for it, it was his Birthday. His wife bought him a big hairy scarf. That's what gave the the name. Farscape is an anagram of Ape scarf. Ok! I might have made that up.

True - it's pretty hard for Brits and Americans to put on an Aussie accent that doesn't sounds completely comical lol
So, I recall that they never really settled on a 'standard' PK accent, because Claudia Black is an Aussie capable of doing both an American and British accent, but Aeryn lands somewhere in between and the other actors seem to be aiming for that middle from whichever end they come from.
My interpretation of John's 'PK voice" is that its not just an accent, but a character he's affecting and the consonants and cadence of RP fit the militarism and the arrogance he's trying to sell.
Blame the cultural impact of Crocodile Dundee. Personally, there's an "American" accent affected by several British actors that's just so generic and noninflected that it stands out even more to my ear.
You were commenting on Browder’s accent being clearer than yours. Yours is a Scouser, right? Been trying to piece it together from little clues and shibboleths.
