And Scorpius has arrived... *rubs hands together with glee*
This is basically where Farscape kicks off. There were good episodes before, but this is pretty much the foundation for the rest of series and I love it.
I agree - once we get to this point Farscape goes to a whole new level.
This is the point where the show becomes legendary from here on out. Scorpius =Greatest scifi villain ever.
Agree except for Scorpius, he is number 2 to "Whispers" of Sense8.

Ahh, the introduction of my favorite television character....EVER.
Fun little fact. One of the chief reasons this show even exists is that in the late 80's-early 90's The Henson Company was looking to expand into filmmaking with their special effect techniques, puppetry, and make-up effects. Brian Henson eventually settled on "Farscape," although at the time it was called something different. One of the processes that THC was working on was a make-up technique called "hot flesh." The character of Scorpius was originally supposed to be an animatronic birdlike creature but over the course of rewrites he became humanoid, and the role went to veteran Australian character actor, Wayne Pygram. The producers deliberately kept Wayne out of the view of the cast and crew whenever he did make-up tests because they wanted a real reaction from everybody when he actually did show up. That first scene of him in the episode, where he walks in and glares at everybody and they all shut up and stare in horror? That's not acting. They were literally stunned by his appearance.
Great frelling episode.
David Franklin shared scenes with him in these two eps, but saw him only in costume until a while later, he had no idea who he was.....
Chiana is very much a survivor, and willing to manipulate everyone around her to do that. She is very good at reading people. In my opinion, what happened here is that she sensed a hesitation in our PK tech girl and was worried she would either stop, or reduce the amount of help she was willing to offer if by the end of it, she and John weren’t going to end up together, and so told her what she wanted to hear.

HERE WE GO. Welcome to the what makes Farscape incredible. From here on, this show is on a level of its own. Scorpius is one of the great TV characters. Enjoy.
Can't tell you how antsy I was this whole week waiting for this one, lol! Scorpius is on a whole different level as an antagonist, and this 2-parter kicks everything into gear ❤
This is the first of the... REALLY BIG TURNED UP TO 11 episodes, and my head is saying... Oh I can't wait till she gets to the way we weren't, or Die me, or eat me.. Or the choice, etc.

Yeah I think Chiana was manipulating Gillina to make sure she keeps helping them. Also I think her accent stays the same from now on, but in the start it did change between Australian (like most of the cast she's an Aussie) and American.
The two and three parters are really where Farscape shines!
In the DVD commentary for "Nerve," Claudia Black described how, early on, various higher-ups had conflicting ideas about what accent Gigi should be using, so that's why it shifts from episode to episode throughout a significant portion of the first season.
Wayne Pygram has actually played two great science fiction villains. In addition to the magnificent Scorpius he can also be seen as the young Grand Moff Tarkin at the end of Revenge of the Sith.

2:30 You're absolutely right. From what I understand, *Gigi Edgley* had been given different instructions from different people regarding her accent. And then eventually that stopped and she settled into a consistent style for how *Chiana* speaks.
I assume *Chiana* said that to *Gilina* just to keep her on their side. *Chiana* seems too be a survivor, and it looks like she's always sort of done whatever she had to do so. So it probably wasn't much of a leap for her to lie in order to make sure that she still has *Gilina's* support. Just as you had noted. And that's my take too. 🤷🏼♂️

What the shit is that! Your reaction to muh boy Scorpy's first appearance was great.
Everything turns up to 11 here. The story arc, the action, the stakes the crew are playing for suddenly become deadly.
And of course, the tragic clown that is stark makes his first appearance.
Aaand here we go! You are about to see why so many people love this show so much. I almost envy you for being able to watch it all bright, shiny and new. Loving your take on this, keep it up.
The average villain tends to be loud and bombastic. Scorpius is the opposite; cool, calculating, intelligent, and very dangerous.
Yep. And you have to love a smart villain. Truly tops a purely powerful, evil, destructive type.
Scorpius really is up there as one of the best antagonists in any sci-fi series. By the end of it, you'll understand and even support him haha. As with everything in this show, character development is key.

Who remembers when they thought Craise was the most unhinged villain so far, and then Scorpius came along.... I remember Farscape typically aired in the autumn on BBC 2 in the UK back when I was in high school, it suited the dark nights perfectly....
FYI on Chiana's accent, producers and directors couldn't agree on it so gave the actress Gigi different direction on different production blocks, and since the episodes were not filmed in sequence it can change from episode to episode. Fortunately they left it down to her in the end and she made a great choices to become the iconic Chiana that we love!
Scorpy isn't unhinged. He's driven, determined, and calculating. And that's why he's so dangerous and terrifying.

Yep...pretty much my reaction when that freak first showed up on screen.
Is there another sci-fi show that messes with the main character's brain like this? I'm quite certain there is no other villain quite like Scorpius.
...and my absolute favorite FARSCAPE character(Scorpius) has finally arrived. For my money, he is by far the best science fiction villain of all time. Like most of the best villains, though he may be a monster, he isn’t evil for the sake of being evil. He does unspeakable things, but you can almost empathize with him when you finally find out why he does them. That’s also what makes him so damn scary... he knows that many of his actions are monstrous, but he also wholeheartedly believes he is doing the right thing.
Little Scorpius factoid... Wayne Pygram was originally supposed to wear reptilian style lenses, but the when the production team saw him in costume without them, they thought Wayne’s natural blue eyes made the look more unsettling.
Also, Scorpius was originally only supposed to appear in three or four episodes. When TPTB saw Wayne’s performance, they decided to keep him on and make Scorpius the primary antagonist for the show.
It's like Renoir (the film director not his painter dad) said "Everyone has their reasons".

So stoked you made it this far! The early episodes are the most dangerous, because I’ve known some people to give up before this point. From here on out, your enjoyment is in every episode is guaranteed! Scorpius is one of the most fascinating antagonists ever introduced in a Sci-fi series, and the more you learn about him, the more you’ll appreciate him!

The introduction of Scorpuis! I love this and the next episode, Hidden Memory. Stark is great character too. This is Gilina’s return. I think Scorpuis knows who Laraq is. That and his ability to detect energy signatures are the reasons why he knows John is not a Sebecean.

Ancients implanting Wormhole calculations to Crichton's subconcious (A Human Reaction)
Moya's pregnancy limiting their options (They Have Got A Secret)
Gilina coming back (PK Tech Girl)
All these initially unrelated stand alone episodes creating a "funnel" (as writer and producer of Babylon 5 Joe Michael Straczynski once described) as main plot laid down and characters develop more , tying down in this episodic knot. The trick is unknotting this tie now.
This is why those “episodes you can skip” lists drive me nuts. While it’s true that some episodes are better than others, they all have something that’s improving the whole in some way. It’s bananas to me to say that any of the show can be skipped, particularly in the first viewing.

Stark acts the way he does because he has passed so many aliens over to death. He is given his mind long term effects.

Interesting fact chiana accent changes often because different directors between different episodes couldn't stick to the same idea of what she should sound like. The fact she was able to change to suit them wial keeping the character real is a great testament to her acting abilities

Chiana's accent keeps changing in the first few episodes she was in because the writers/producers didn't know if they wanted the character to sound Austrailian or American or something completely different. The actress had to keep changing it up because they couldn't make up their minds until (I think) the next episode ("The Hidden Memory").
Finally Scorpius! Scorpius is such a good villain compared to Crais.
He is the best villain of the show
Both Chiana and D'argo had wandering accents for their first few episodes of Farscape. I think the producers were trying to see which made a better fit for their characters: North American alien, or Australian alien. :)
At last. The "weird dude" in leather. Major, major character that gets this show really hopping. All hail Scorpius and his hot head gear!

I hate Scorpius but we get to meet Stark in the same episode, him I like. And yes Chiana is a loose cannon and a manipulator. She's my favorite character of the series.
2:33 Yeah, there were constant struggles between the directors and writers over exactly what accent Chiana should have, though by the second season, they finally settled on a more general American one.

I met the actress that plays Chiana at comic con. She was nice to meet. I believe Scorpuis knew the real Larraq. That is one of the reasons why he knows John is not Sebecean.
The nerve that is damaged in Aeryn is equivalent to the Human Liver.

The ending scene of this Episode with Crichton yelling out loud in the chair , was cut out when it first Aired on BBC2... god knows why tho,

Aeryn got stabbed in her version of the Liver. That is so badly wounded.
10:48 , "He is such a unique looking guy" YES , YES HE IS. As I call him "Space Alien version of Hannibal Lecter in Leather" is introduced here. LOL. As I said in the commentary of ruclips.net/video/VPrZuHd89VE/видео.html , Aurora Chair part is of the best and most intimidating interrogation scenes I have seen in sci-fi televised media format. Scorpius initially reminds me a Nazi Gestapo officer questioning a captive. Only a Swastika arm band is missing. Did anyone realize how director used shadows on Aurora chair scene ? Shadows on and around face of Scorpius gives him a very maleveont and dark impression.
Chiana is giving Gilina false hope (or she thinks she does) about John's interest with her so she would not have a change of heart and stop helping them , she acts cynical but let's face it except maybe John (and even he is coming around) , main characters were mostly written cynical and double dealing , acting for self interest above all so far
the producers of Farscape weren't sure what accent Chiana should have in her early days which is why it shifts in her early episodes. I'm so glad you've reached this episode cos this is where it stops being a monster of the week episodal series into an ongoing narrative. So glad you're doing this great series. It's lovely to watch it again with someone who doesn't know what's going to happen next!

Oh, btw, Scorpius wasn’t trying to get wormhole technology previously, he knew nothing about them until he had John in the Aurora chair, but as soon as this new knowledge was dangled in front of him, he wanted it.
You missed something in the dialogue. Wormholes ARE the focus of Scorpius' research, even before Crichton's arrival. That's what he initially thought Crichton was there for. The key is this part of the exchange:
Crichton: You're trying to create a WOOOOORMHOOOOOOOLE!
Scorpy: As are you.
So Scorpy was already trying to create a wormhole even before Crichton arrived.
There is a big reveal in the second season because of this interrogation. I like rewatching this episode to figure out at what point did the reveal happen.

You should watch The Dark Crystal movie (from the 80s) on Netflix. It's also a Jim Hensen production and there is now a TV series thats a prequel to it on Netflix as well. I loved that movie growing up.
