One of the better leash pulling videos out there. You start with a dog that isn't trained. You show and explain techniques . You show a dog that improves.

Aww don’t say that. The closest comparison that comes to mind is my autistic daughter. In year 3 she started a school program and a loooooot of what the teacher was doing was really working. Stuff that we had failed at over and over. That’s when I decided to surrender my pride and just follow. At the end of the day they’re trained for this and we aren’t. So it’s ok that it takes us longer. Even if it’s much longer.

Same. I have a rescue pit bull and German Shepherd. I've had this Pit Bull for almost a year walking 2-3 times daily avergaing 3-5 miles total.
It takes me 30 heavy pops essentially forcing him away from barking dogs behind a fence. The pop by itself doesn't seem to do anything. I am essentially lifting/dragging on and off until I get far enough away from the dog, rabbit, or people. At this point I wager neighbors think it's abuse.

We have a Bernese Mountain Dog and this is what our walking looks like! I’ve tried several types of training but I think I’m missing the consistency. Our problem is she walks well when it’s just the two of us. But if my kids go with us, Rosie feels the need to pull me everywhere, even when she and I are in front of the kids. It’s as if she’s feeding off their energy and excitement. Family hikes or walks to the bus stop definitely become frustrating. Thank you for the tips!

    • @MIZZKIE
      @MIZZKIE 4 года назад +3

"Feeding off their energy" is EXACTLY what is happening.
You should watch Cesar Millan's "The Dog Whisperer" series, because it constantly demonstrates how energy affects a dog. Having the correct kind of energy when dealing with a dog makes a huge difference, even before you do any actual training. It is a concept that EVERYBODY - even Cesar haters - NEEDS to know.

    Great advice.
My young husky is a tornado. Previous owner spoiled her, zero training and lived in an apartment....Reactive to birds, cars, people and of course other dogs and smells.
Short walks are the key. I do 5 short ones and play in the backyard to burn her high energy.
    She's best on the 4th and 5th.
It's been 2 weeks, still HIGH reactivity.
I believe I got the wrong collar. I'm changing it this weekend.
My approach is loose leash and I did buy a gentle leader. Will be using it once I get a thicker collar.

Well I’m back after my very first try and IT WORKED!!! After months and months of being yanked around by this little 25lb dog, he actually walked by my side for the VERY FIRST TIME.
After reading the comments, I thought I’d have to buy a collar vs a harness but nope! Worked just fine with the harness. I noticed I had to keep him on a VERY short slack leesh at first. Literally within 5mins he started to look to me and follow my pace.
I could tell he was confused at first like” hey! What’s happening? I’m always in control.” LOL 😂 But this was both easy and effective! Gonna keep the training going because I know it ain’t over. 😁 Thank you SO much!

I have a mastiff who just turned a year old, he's 130 pounds and used to pull like crazy.... I took him to school! His trainer suggested a pronged collar (which I've never liked) BUT when she tried him with it, he was immediately a different dog... he no longer pulls me everywhere...and it doesnt hurt him!! ( must be used properly) If he sees it, he sits and waits to have it put on. I am having the same problem now with my 5 month old shar pei pulling and pulling...a regular collar is bad since he pulls hard enough to make himself throw up...a harness makes him pull just as much if not more(at least its not on his neck anymore) ...my next trip to the pet store I'll be picking up another pronged training collar and start working with him. It makes a huge difference!!!!!

I don't get whats wrong, we've been doing leash training whole time I've had him. He has gotten a bit better, but teaching him to walk next to me is impossible. He will never walk in the right position, no matter what he will always pull ahead. He walks the relaxed leash walk OK, but will not walk next to me even when the right position has been taught to him. I hired a trainer and saw no improvement with their training method. No matter how many times i do the stop when ahead he will always go ahead. Tried different methods, with lots of treats, no treats and some treats. Always same outcome. Never had this happen with a dog, I just wish I understood.

Oh my word, thank you! I only watched the first 6 minutes and thought, let me try what I've seen so far. I practiced this with my dog for 20 min. rather than a normal walk and she was walking SO nicely by the end of our time. I tried to be aware to pull her back EVERY time she pulled, and take steps backwards having her follow me. That was a helpful thought. Excellent video. I have a red Doberman and she is very strong and energetic. I've actually had to lower her protein intake because she has too much energy. And I've taken a few training classes but she is so powerful and fast and smart. His video showed a big dog and how to correct that pulling after tugging back. I was basically spending my entire walk with her just piling as hard as I could to keep her back at my side the entire time. Now I know to turn in. Thanks

As a Dog Walker I'm continuously looking for tips to move forward in training. Some great pointers in the video.
I'm currently working on a few Dobermans. Very intelligent but finding them a tough cookie to crack.
Can I ask, would you always exercise before training or get straight into it whatever energy they have?
Also, I noticed on a previous video you used the 2 steps back technique of which you did show in this video but how come you've moved towards the walking into the dog technique? Do you find this is better than the 2 steps back?

Well there are a lot of remedies. One thing you can do is teach your dog that when they are wearing a harness, it is okay to pull. When you switch the leash to a neck collar, they are not allowed to pull.

Really great leash training! Had taken puppy classes before but for some reason leash training wasn’t going so well. From a lot of treats, praises and peanut butter I was only able to keep him from over pulling on leash but not have him follow along. I’ve used steak treats, praise, and toys. Super frustrated. She is so confused when I take two step back or walk the opposite direction, no matter what, she just pulls, and now that she is older she is stronger.
