    It was an absolute pleasure seeing you Hal! I appreciate all the help you've given me and my family with moving there. Me and my family just got back from visiting and we really didn't see any homeless and we were all over. We lived in albuquerque for 7 years and there were tons and tons of homeless but in roanoke I think I saw about 2 and 0 sleeping in the parks or terrorizing others. I also felt so safe there (I felt safe in albuquerque though so take that what you will) wonderful place and we cannot wait to move! Thank you for this alternative view on the area.

    One of the biggest complaints I'd have to say is Roanoke's lack of a robust transportation system. Living here the past 16 years the buses are poorly ran with no late night or overnight service offered at all. Also the fact that you have to wait an hour for a bus to come by in 2021 is atrociously unacceptable. There have been promises of talks to expand out on the services into the latter part of the evening and possibly overnight....however nothing solid has materialized. If you don't have a vehicle in Roanoke you're literally screwed. In many ways it's like Sleepy Hollow in Roanoke as everyone knows that Roanoke after 8 pm is a ghost town of sorts. If the bus line not only ran later or overnight but also ran more frequently there would be better opportunities for people to get jobs and the city would be able to pull in more revenue. Valley Metro needs to be revamped and reworked to meet the needs of the Valley here in 2021 they're still running the bus line like it's 1990.....They need to come to realize that not everyone works M-F 9-5 down here.

      I hear you loud and clear. The problem with extending the hours that bus service runs is that the cost to operate is not compensated by enough riders to make it feasible. We're still addicted to our cars, unfortunately. I live close to a large retail center and I wouldn't dare walk because of safety issues and the overwhelming smell of car exhaust.

    I keep looking at Roanoke as a potential place to buy a home/live [and have for the past 5 years]. My main concerns are a typical, old fashioned southern mentality, when it comes to LGBT, and non caucasian; I’m married to someone from Taiwan. I have traveled to Georgia, several times, and Texas, so I’m familiar with Southern hospitality, and I love it, but I’m just not sure I want to put my better half in a situation where he has to face a strong amount of racism. I realize that racism is everywhere, and cannot completely be avoided. I appreciate you touching on the diversity issue, but I’m still far from convinced that we’d be/feel safe there. Hopefully, time will change this.
    Another concern: I read in a few forums that it’s particularly difficult for an,’outsider’ to find work there, as, more often then not - one is hired through connections (one would have to know someone to be able to get a job there).
    Otherwise, I love that your weather seems so wonderful (4seasons), I love that I would be able to afford a home there (I currently live in 92843, and a decent/livable home is currently $600,00+, with little land)

      We'd recommend you plan a trip to come visit the Roanoke Valley to see for yourself if it meets your needs and desires. We've got folks moving here from all over the country working remotely, moving a job locally, or finding work once they get here, so it's certainly possible to find work from what we've seen and heard.

    I was visiting in Roanoke in August 2020 for 10 days and I was all over the city and outskirts hiking, sightseeing, etc etc. And really really liked the area. I only saw 3 homeless people who were under the walkway overpass downtown. And they were not begging for money, just hanging together and talking. I live in Florida and we have a ton of homeless and they are frequently on the street corners with signs begging for money or food. Its heartbreaking. I did not see that in roanoke. But when I was in Durango, Co in Sept 2020 I saw a bunch of homeless along their greenways and walkways near town. Sad.

    Can you talk about winter driving in Roanoke, especially the highway driving. I am planning on driving between Radford and Roanoke for my job.

    • @RoanokeVirginiaLiving
      @RoanokeVirginiaLiving  3 года назад +1

      Hey. We'd say it's not horrible and we don't get a ton of snow / ice every year. Most times, if it's icy around here, folks just stay home until it's safe to travel. They do a pretty good job of preparing and clearing the main highways and especially the interstates.

    How hot and humid does it get in the summer? Is Roanoke a good place for retirees?

    • @RoanokeVirginiaLiving
      @RoanokeVirginiaLiving  3 года назад

      Great questions. We have some hot humid days but not for a long period of time honestly and Roanoke has been voted a “best retirement town” before. We’ve got a couple of videos where we talk about the Roanoke weather. ruclips.net/video/U_TgLWc6Cp4/видео.html

      @@RoanokeVirginiaLiving Thanks. I just watched your video on the weather and it sounds better than I expected. I've lived in Baton Rouge and Hong Kong, among many other places, and both places have two seasons: summer and January. I'll never understand why people retire to Florida; yuk!
      On the other point, do you know any websites on retirement in Roanoke? I could just google it, but thought you might know something offhand. Thanks again.

    High crime rate not true? I hear gun shots atleast once a week near where I work, some times daily.

    • @RoanokeVirginiaLiving
      @RoanokeVirginiaLiving  3 года назад

      Most folks we talk to in the Valley as a whole feel safe. We know with any city it’s not perfect and there are some areas of any town that may have a higher chance or rate of crime than others.

    • @omniken66
      @omniken66 3 года назад +1

      I'm from NYC to me there's hardly any crime down here....mostly petty stuff like shop lifting and stealing stuff out of peoples cars that were left open and their front yards. They say Melrose and Tazewell ave are bad areas with inclusion to South East....I don't see it....I'd walk right through those areas at 1 am without thinking twice!

    I was there last week because we are moving there. The only time I saw many homeless people at once was across from Texas Tavern around midnight. They like the post office because the garage above is cantilevered out over the sidewalk, so it's out of the rain. But I did not see them working almost every major intersection the way they do in Pittsburgh. There's probably about as many total as you'd find in just one major neighborhood in Pittsburgh, such as South Side or North Side. And that isn't counting all the ones at major highway interchanges and the like throughout the suburbs. So homelessness, not that bad in Roanoke.

    I lived in Roanoke from 1979 until 2013 and still have many friends, family, extended family etc. still there that I go back to visit on occasion. As far as crime, like anywhere else, you will always find crime; but go to New York City, Chicago, Minneapolis.. etc and attempt to compare them, there is no comparison. You don't have the amount of crime. As far as homeless, again another situation like the crime. It exists but in much lower doses. Of course you also don't see as much homelessness because the police tend to chase them off so that they aren't seen. As far as saying there isn't anything to do, that is both true and false. If you are the parent of a newborn through elementary grade child, or are 65+ in age there is a myriad of things to do, or at least things to keep you busy. By the time you reach Middle School, or Junior high, a large majority of things to do dissipate rapidly. The only caveat to that is if the only thing that you like to do requires being in nature, then it's a great place. If you want anything more to do you have to wait until you're 21 so that you can go into nightclubs. I hate to say it, but really that is kind of just how it is. From age 21 to 65, it's all nature activities, and nightclubs; which if you are looking for nightclubs, and are used to Big City clubs, it is a completely different environment, you won't find big City clubs there. As far as things to do other than nature and nightclubs, there is one zoo in Roanoke, and nearly countless museums. Nothing in any of them changes in great amounts, so once you see them, the magic is pretty close to done; unless constant repetition is your jam. As far as jobs, unless you already have one lined up, I wouldn't suggest going there to look for a job; unless minimum wage or slightly higher is what you're looking to make. Yes, there are high paying jobs to be found there, but you will also find that for many of those jobs to be gotten, you either have to be a family member or you have to really know somebody. Reading what I have to say, you may think that I hate Roanoke, but that's not true. I would just rather visit than to live there. Roanoke's biggest problem is and always has been the Blue bloods that run the city. They have chased away more commerce, jobs, and businesses than I can count, simply to keep the"Mayberry/Andy Griffith" way of life. Do your research and history on Roanoke and you will see how what I'm saying is true. Off of the top of my head, a couple that I remember them saying "No" to... Busch Gardens, Six Flags. There are many others with not as notable name, but we're great ideas that they refuse to let in because they were afraid that Roanoke would lose its Mayberry charm. Don't believe me, research it.

    this whole video really seems like a big lie, 1st homelessness is more prevalent in roanoke then any other area surrounding it. does anybody know why this is? It's because all the homeless ppl from places like Danville martinsville Bedford and areas are transported to roanoke by the police because of the homeless shelter. i will say it is safe in ronoake if you don't go to the wrong area i live in the southeast and I hate even walking around here I've been robbed 3 times in the past year I've lived here

    • @RoanokeVirginiaLiving

      Avrey, you are correct in stating that certain areas (as in most cities) may have more homeless than others. When we're providing content to our viewers, we're talking about the Roanoke Valley as a whole (all 7 municipalities that comprise our region), not, just Roanoke City proper. We always recommend that our clients do their own additional due diligence (don't just rely on us) so they can make the best-informed decision for themselves. We're hopeful that our community leaders will make the homeless situation more of a priority and find a better way to provide real help to those who are homeless in our area.
