The long dark actually can end up feeling very "cottagecore" once you get good enough at it. Sure it's a pretty harsh survival game, and you have to deal with wolves and all that. But once you know what you're doing then all this natural world end up feeling very peaceful to navigate (dare I say chill? =p). It's not exactly a lush and bright aesthetics but harsh winter are part of the natural world. There is also quite a lot of crafting and the more you advance through the game the more you end up relying on crafted items.
Same with food, while you can't really grow crops and foraging is limited and mostly useful for medicinal herbs trapping rabbits and occasionaly hunting a deer or a wolf (or a bear if you're feeling adventurous) and then actually having to gut them and quarter them really does give this feeling of a natural lifestyle.
The game is also very slow paced for the most part which fits with the aesthetics.
Though not all map exactly give off the same vibe. Timberwolf mountain is a bit too harsh and has not a lot of real good place to live in for a long time for exemple, and climbing a mountain isn't exactly stress free. But maps like pleasant valley, mystery lake or coastal highway all are very slow paced and have great long term shelters to establish yourself in.
Also overall the canadian cottages do a lot for the aesthetic.

I really wanted to feel this way, because on paper, it sounds like the perfect game for me. I love the setting, I love the idea behind it in general, and I'm a huge fan of survival games. But to me, the game is just TOO harsh to enjoy for any length of time. I understand that it's meant to be brutal, and I respect the devs for not pulling any punches if that was their goal. I just wish it was SLIGHTLY more forgiving so I could slow down and enjoy the surroundings on occasion. But instead, it just feels like you spend so much time scrounging for supplies and hanging on by a limb, that it's really hard to enjoy. It is very possible that I just didn't give it enough time to really get good at it, but after 30 or so hours, I just couldn't take much more, sadly. I really wanted to love the game too.

    • @Laezar1
      @Laezar1 3 года назад

@@ninja_tony I mean, the game is pretty hard and you indeed need to be good enough at it that you can work yourself into a routine of sorts to feel that way. That's a common thing with a lot of games tbh, the difficulty tends to be very subjective based on skill level and lead to very different experiences.
That being said have you tried the game at lower difficulty? it's still pretty harsh but a lot more forgiving and the wildlife isn't aggressive. Might not help but still, lower difficulty exist for a reason and sometimes we might not consider them even when they'd make the experience better.

The term "cottagecore" didn't exist when I created the Minecraft modpack series Life in the Woods, but how you're describing the term (and overlapping terms) hits a lot of points that resonated with people when they played it.

The solution I have at the moment for dealing with the combat problem in Minecraft is a couple of different mods: One called 'Bad Mobs' gives me a simple way to blacklist the mobs that I don't want to spawn and I've used that to disable undead mobs and creepers; and a second mod called "Apathetic Mobs" let's me switch mobs from being hostile to being neutral or passive and I've used that to set mobs to only attack me if I attack them first. I like that this means that I don't have to have all the difficulty settings turned down like I would if I were playing in peaceful; and it adds some of the content back into the game that would otherwise be taken out.

My dream is to one day live in a cozy cottage in the woods. The only stipulation? Needs good Internet hehe
Real talk though I found this incredibly interesting and inspiring. My girlfriend LOVES Minecraft and I enjoy playing with her a fair bit but I struggle to stay invested and am too overwhelmed by large builds to do anything interesting so my gameplay loop is usually; build a house in the forest ➤ go mining for a bit ➤ try to build a castle and give up a third of the way through. Making a cottage I can customize with nice furniture instead of trying to customize by building large structures sounds right up my alley. Now I need just need to convince the gf to download these mods but that should be easy! Thanks for this!

In addition to Kelpie the fox's, I suggest checking the tutorials and speedbuilds by blisschen and Zaypixel. Very cozy!
Also I suggest checking out Vintage Story - it's a standalone minecraft-like developed by experienced MC modders, which adds its own lore and mechanics. The visuals aren't quite as bright and colorful as Mizuno's texture pack, but it has lots of decorative items and building options, and more in-depth crafting, farming and cooking systems. It also allows you to manually 'sculpt' all building blocks (as you can do in MC with some mods, but much better optimized) which massively increases your building potential.

This comment is going to be a bit on the longer end, so I hope you'll bear with me, but I just feel the need to share this.
For starters, about this video in particular, I really enjoyed it. I never even knew there was such a thing such as Cottagecore, let alone its variants. You also made me want to play some minecraft more than I wanted before, so there's a good chance I'll end up enjoying my time leisurely on that blocky virtual world as I go and set out for a mixture of a great adventure and a chill relaxation period. I also really love your takes because you drive the discussion in games away from the general points, where most games talk about either action fueled segments, high octane horror thrills or very deep inter/intrapesronal drama, but you give it another focus. A more serene, much needed "zen" focus, so to speak. Really brings out some great things out there.
Now, talking about your channel in general, I think it's changing the way I perceive things around me. Particularly, environments.
Not to dwell too much on myself, but I've been described as a very sensitive, yet not very visual person. You could ask me to describe what someone is wearing or how a place looks like and I couldn't for the life of me describe it. However, if you asked me how it is to EXPERIENCE said person/place, I could give you a full breakthrough and make you FEEL there through my narrative prowess (which I sharpened even further through writing prose).
Yet, I always had a deep admiration to excellent character/environment design, even if I myself didn't even realize it and I think that has to do with the fact that... design seems to have two purposes: To complete an objective (Utilitary design) and to convey something (communicative design), these purposes being very intertwined with each other.
Your videos putting such emphasis on virtual spaces have started to make me start to pay more attention to the real environments around me and even trying to understand them better. I was always very good at my narrative making you feel like you're on that place, but the actual physical description would be mostly up to imagination. Now, when I look at these things, I feel like they're more tangible. I feel I can "see" the world better and understand why it looks the way it does. It even sprouted a few ideas about why sometimes people's clothes feel so bland compared to actual character designs (even if the character is realistic instead of stylised) and how it all comes down to how one's appearance, while not to be the defining factor and shouldn't be judged as the old book cover saying goes, it conveys and helps one express themselves a lot more.
I want to avoid derailing this comment even more, but I just wanted to thank you for your great work with your videos and in opening my eyes to the "physical" realm around me and how its appearance convey so much about the world around me and, on a lighter note, for helping me realize how I want to decorate my room in real life.
Thank you very much for your excellent work. I am very glad you're sharing these video essays with us. This platform doesn't deserve you, you're a true blessing to our video feeds and I hope your RUclips career treats you as well as you treat your scripts and those virtual environments: With all the love and care in the world.

Great vid! May I suggest Starbound as a contender. It's a bit older and not a perfect game, but it can very much be played as a sci-fi cottagecore game (cottage-fi? sci-cottage... no, that doesn't work). The builds that you can make can range from really cozy and small to enormously epic. And it's all about that farming, ranching, foraging, and hunting for food. Oh, to live the dream!
I'm 100% a city guy, that's why this aesthetic attracts me, because when I play Stardew Valley, I can live the dream. I know I'm not made for the real thing. Whenever I travel anywhere out of the city, I love the travel (I always travel by bus), specially if there are pines (I love pine forests), I have a good day and night and I want to come back home the day later.
But it's not only the land what attracts me to Stardew Valle; it's mainly the independence. Earlier this year I quit my job because I can't stand another day doing work within a working schedule, having a boss, and using all my energy in something that is not mine. Since I left, I have sold 6 articles to a French publisher specialized in tabletop roleplaying games, I have written advertising articles as freelance, so perhaps the dream is no dream after all. We will see.

It would be very interesting in your comparaison between the parameters by which you define Cottagecore/Dark Academia/Fairy Core
with the painting and literary 19 century style of Naturalism, especially since it's a style that was heavily influenced by the development of photography
it seems there are quite a bit of overlap
With some variable dose of impressionism to let games express themselves graphically
I'm rambling here but, if we factor in the concept of suspension of disbelief we could say that :
Within our suspension of disbelief, a game like Minecraft can be considered naturalist and it's that suspension of disbelief, this fantasy factored in, that makes it Cottagecore
Outside of it, a game like Minecraft is impressionist/naturalist
I'm pretty interested in hearing what you think about this "^^

We have many farm animals and I am also a beekeeper with my dad. Location is also nice, around are mountains. When I first arive to capital city for uni, I cried for 2 weeks. It looks magical and slow paced to live in village, but Truth is kinda the opposite. Most urbanits would take it for more than 2 weeks. We do normal jobs + village staff, so we have less time then flat living city dwellers. You need to hard work, know how to use tools and machinery and how to repair it. Many important facilities are far away... When I had first gym class at Uni, one guy from capital was asking me how long I was going to the gym. I said I was in the gym for the first time. He was surprised and told me that I look I was visiting gym for some time. Luckily big portion of uni student are from villages too so I have like minded people. Eventhough living in big cities is way easier and they offer more opportunities I would still prefer live in a village

Maybe I'm late to comment on this but "Ryuutama", a natural fantasy japanese Tabletop RPG, really captures the aesthetic of cottagecore and a more nature focused life. In Ryuutama there is a farmer and hunter class and the seasons affect which spell your character is able to use and even though there is combat in the game, everything is mostly focused on the stories and interactions you have with people on your journey. Just look up the book and you can see the influences. Of course, being a game about traveling and a TRPG you can't avoid people completely but I think the nature of constantly changing places adds a little spice of wanderlust.

I think you should check out a game called “vintage story” which is heavily inspired by Minecraft but it nails the cottage core aesthetic even more. Things are much slower paced and it’s just a “comfy” game in general.

Never heard of the term, and it's good to know. Looking at this makes me think less of cottage and more of cozy, like cozycore. But hey, each to their own, and something like cozy seems like something I like to unwind when I'm an oldie. But seeing these Minecraft mods do make the game look cozier.

It mainly rubs me the wrong way that "core" is just lazily being tacked onto everything now, when it quite literally has no place there. Like I said in a comment above, I absolutely love the entire idea behind "cottagecore", and it's pretty much exactly the type of thing that I adore, but the term itself is really offputting and pushes me back a bit from it. That and the fact that it's a trend makes it less appealing as well. But in general, it's a pretty cool idea.
