If that was an euphemism, then I wouldn’t be saying that my propeller wouldn’t spin- ‘cos you wouldn’t wanna go shouting that out, would you?
-Alex Turner
I find it adorable how Alex didn't notice it sounded quite like it when writing the song's chorus. Lol.
it's... it's not a euphemism??
Writer's block.
august types in lower case because that's edgy nope. He said in an interview from 2009 that it’s too vulgar and straight forward, he’ll never write something like that.

Humbug is so underrated.
Yes it is :(
Humbug is the best AM album, and one of the best albums ever in my opinion! Every song is so good!
Fucking massively under rated loved this album took a totally different direction. It was well crafted and a bit dark made it even better.
it's literally a fans favourite
Idk why people say this when this album is all fans talk about. It’s funny because this album was very poorly received from what I’d heard but somehow years later , everyone loves it. I wonder if TBH & C will go in the same direction

NAH MAN YOU JOKING, IS IT TRUE ???? 😭😭

Am I the only one who doesn't think this song is a sexual innuendo? To me this is like being in love with a girl who doesn't give you the attention you're craving. When the girl isn't around, you're depressed and de-motivated. "When are you arriving?" He wants to see her badly so that he can feel uplifted again, and the propeller allows him to start moving again and being motivated. Sure it can have a sexual meaning too, but I don't really like to think of it that way imo.
Yes, Alex said that this is not about his cock, its about a mood
+Adam Sinclair I think it's about the effects of drugs. He needs someone to give him the drugs, or to start his propeller because it won't spin. AKA he isn't himself without taking drugs,
When you put it like that, it seems it could well be related to drugs too. 90% of AM songs are related to girls though, so that's why I assumed it was about a girl.
this song could be about anything

I hope they release another Humbug-esque album....Humbug is my fav.
whats wrong with am?
@105084716990904749685 Nothing really, I just dont think AM is as good as Humbug is all.
I agree humbug is a great album, I just think that AM is a more refined kinda Humbug/suck it... they've tried loads of different sounds over the years and i like the way they're headed with AM :) sorry if i came across rude with the first comment, i was probably drunk..Ps my fav album is Favourite Worst Nightmare
i heard the new album has humbug vibes from the people who’ve seen them live and the new videos of new songs. the album was also leaked and i have the link but i really don’t wanna listen to it, it comes out in 2 days anyway so
Well, now we have Tranquility Base... which is the closest to it (or TLSP to some)
Humbug is obviously their best albums. Most feeling, most emotion, best overall sound. It's dark, interesting with a perfect theme. Not too long, keeps you waiting for more and a better percentage of awesome songs. It's the first all around album they've ever made.

I've become a huge fan of Arctic Monkeys, but I'm questioning deeply why their fanbase is a bunch of damn hipsters. You either get the fans that hate other fans for liking "Do I wanna know" ( which is a great song, so like... are they wrong for liking it because its on the radio? And... can you honestly deny being a hipster if that's your reason? ) or you get the type that are like "This song is so underrated and underplayed." I see this on pretty much every song, even though this song has had 5.3 MILLION views.
Please stop turning good bands into cults. Just enjoy the music.

When Alex were a lad, he used to buy those polystyrene aeroplanes. You know the ones, where you got 3 strips that would slot together to make a hand held aeroplane that you could throw and it would glide through the air. Well, you also got a propeller for the front of it. One day, Alex and Jamie went to the corner shop for a 10p 'mix up' and an aeroplane to play with down the old quarry. But when he opened up the packet he discovered no propeller! So... He went back to the corner shop to speak to the keeper, "Propeller is missin' from this mr" he said. "There's nothin' I can do bonny lad... Sorry" replied the shop keeper. "But I bought it from 'ere" Alex responded, "Aye.. Well it must of been a bad batch. You'll have to take it up with Plane makers. Bugger off!" Shouted the keeper. Alex then ran home as fast as his legs could carry him. He proceeded to ring the number on the back of the packet. After explaining his situation, the Plane makers agreed to send Alex a new propeller. It would take 5 days to arrive however. After day 2, Alex and Jamie were very bored and getting impatient. Seeing this, Alex's mam told them to write a song about their situation. MY PROPELLER was born!!! And so, we are here, listening to My Propeller.. Not about a penis, but about a young boy wanting to play with his toy aeroplane down the old quarry.
hahahhaha, i love your explantion!
Bonny lad lol

scoonboon Sounds legit but is that the real meaning of the song? Im inclined to believe you. Being a fan for awhile. I know Alex wrote alot of songs based on his childhood. Any way, I LOVE THIS ALBUM
I am aware this song might have a sexual innuendo, but it never fails to make cry. The way it builds up, the repetitions, and the strength of the final chorus just always hit me so hard.
fatkidlovescakee actually, the song has nothing sexual to it. It's actually about a lack of creative flow, and lacking in original ideas
DanIsNotAnAngelOfTheLord oh thank god its not erectal dysfunction

If Alex of 2010 had seen himself today, he wouldn't have believed it. However, he's always perfect in a different way.
Yeah, you're right. They never stay the same, because they don't want to be boring and they want to try their abilities in something new.

i guess alex 2006 would have been amazed by the way he looked in 2010. the 2010 alex probably would have cried over how he looks nowadays. i dont like the suit. the quiff is alright worn in that rock n roll style, not the showmaster style
***** i am not quite sure about that, especially on that psychedelic part. alex said because AM had such positive acclaim they might do something like a sequel (which I dont believe but anything in that direction would be not my style)
i'd love them to go in a "evil twin", "r u mine", "you and i" kind of direction
I agree with you. They are always changing, but they are always perfect.
I heard this live at Bristol yesterday and it was one of the best experiences paired with the fact that they performed mardy bum for the first time in 10 years
i’m such a big “my propeller” fan. i wake up and listen to “my propeller”, then i go eat my “my propeller” cereal; after that, i proceed to go to my “my propeller” shower and wash myself with “my propeller” soap; when i am done with that, i dry myself with my “my propeller” towel. once i am dry, i put on my “my propeller” clothes and spray my “my propeller” perfume. since i’m ready for the day, i go to the “my propeller” store and pick up more “my propeller”. when i’m done shopping, i drive in my “my propeller” car back to my “my propeller” house. i fix myself up a “my propeller” dinner and then go to sleep in my “my propeller” bed while “my propeller” is lulling me to sleep.

the video is not random at all, it has a special psychedelic sense and in my opinion that's what the whole song is about..
Setting this as my alarm was not a good decision for my heart.
@ Noah Murrells Bro, try having the Doctor Who theme songs as your alarm
I will never know what this song is about, and it kills me.
"My propeller won't spin, and I can't get it started on my own"
- He can't seem to find his drive without the help of a special someone.
it's most likely about his penis.
Actually, Alex said himself that it wasn't about his penis. But I think I understand the song now; after it helped me through my exams, I developed a special connection with it. I reckon Derek is right and it's about how Alex needs a woman to "spin his propeller" and get him working again, to "coax him out his low", which could be depression.
Nando Whitaker Lmao that made me laugh.
Nando Whitaker you sir deserve a medal
I totally agree.Humbug is their best album so far.The music, the songs lyrics, the whole atmosphere just makes me feel so emotional...

i think every drummer in the world should hear this song.. the drumming is amazing and coming from a simple guitar riff
I don't think this song is about hand jobs cause Alex Turner denied that ‘My Propeller’ was about, erm, his propeller. He said: “If that was a euphemism, then I wouldn’t be saying that my propeller wouldn’t spin- ‘cos you wouldn’t wanna go shouting that out, would you?”
Your erectile dysfunction is the last thing you'd want broadcasted on the radio, huh.
Humbug supremacy
Humbug was awesome
ArcticMonkeys55 *is :3
‘He he the song is about a handjob’
Bruh the propeller analogy is more about the woman taking him out of his depression ‘coax me out my low’. A propeller is basically connected to the engine of a boat, hence the song is about needing his girl to get his ‘drive’ back
This song safed my life
This song sounds like it belongs in a James Bond movie.

@@acertainayush i agree
I wanna marry this song so badly
I feel like the meaning of the song refers to everybody having their own personal propeller (metaphor for their driving force in life), and you will always need somebody beside you to help that propeller spin.
I wish I thought about it like this. I'm just very dirty minded lol😅
Happy birthday Humbug, love of my life
How can a song be SOOO good like this?
The propeller thing is a metaphor to refer to his imagination. He can't make it work without any kind support. That's the song about.
I'm surprised : Arctic Monkeys just can't do bad songs ! All their songs are great ! From the first till last ! And Humbug is so much different from the first album...and let's not forget Alex's and Miles's side project - Last Shadow Puppets...just FANTASTIC !!! The best band ever !!! (for me at least)
This music video is underrated. Everyone always says that the cornerstone music video is the best but i love this one because it looks so cool
I love this song because it can be interpreted in a lot of different ways and it seems like Alex doesn't go into detail about the meaning to keep it that way.
for a long time i assumed it was a song about getting a blow job. "make your descent slowly" is self explanatory "oil up those sticky keys" could be seen as lube up those hands "have a spin on my propeller" ....suck it. these could be seen as sex references. however, changing the perspective, i can also see this song being about drug dependency.
"coax me out my low" anyone who's had problems with drugs know the depressing feeling of being sober, then feeling alright once they've got their bit. "it's a necessary evil" you feel like you need drugs but you know they're harming you. "when are you arriving? coz my propeller won't spin and i can't get it started on my own" the 'propeller' could be his creativity or motivation, and until his fix arrives, he feels no creativity or motivation to do anything.
Once more, it could be about being in love with someone. "momentary synergy" could be referring to that moment you see the person you love, and it feels like you know they are the one, being in perfect synergy for that moment. "coax me out my low, sink into tomorrow, coax me out my low, and have a spin of my propeller" might be him wanting the person he loves to be around him to take away his depression and sink into tomorrow like nothing else matters. "it's a necessary evil" Love can make people crazy and do things they wouldn't usually do, sometimes more harmful things than good, but you need that love in your life, making it a necessary evil.
I don't personally believe the toy plane story. The rest of the album's songs have similar undertones (obsession, love, sex and drugs) and its very out of place to have just one song be about his toy plane's propeller not working as a child.
The Humbug era was amazing. It gets better as time goes on
One of my favourite song. Really like the atmosphere, that riff, the lyrics, everything...
For me Humbug was the Arctics 1st album aimed at an international audience. The 1st 2 albums were totally British albums. All the songs on them are about British life & British people. That's probably why their 1st 2 albums are their most popular in the UK. Although when AM came out, that put the Arctics on another level all together.

This song is too iconic by the way. GREAT opening for the album and when they play it live HOOOOOOOLY FF IT GETS 100 times better.
love how everyone argues about what the song is about. Just shows the genious of alex's lyrics that there are so many different interpretations from people. personally i think its about him wanting someone to help him out of a low depressing mood, spinning his propeller and snapping him out of it.
I need to hear them play this song live so I can cry my heart out and die happy
the video catches the mood and the atmosphere of the song just perfect.
