Nice to see you reacting to a movie about a fellow Man of Mystery. By the way, Random Task is making fun of a character in the Bond movie, Goldfinger, called Oddjob who threw his hat as a weapon.
The Austin Powers movies are very over the top, and rely a lot on repeat gags plus some great sight gags, but they are much funnier for those who grew up on James Bond films. Most of the humor is direct spoofing of JB, with a lot of spoofs of western culture and history as well. The puns and silliness are just really Mike Myers' style, and they follow him from movie to movie throughout his career. This is one of the only comedy franchises I've watched that actually get funnier in the sequels.
The name Random Task is a play on words of the henchman "Oddjob" from the Bond film "Goldfinger." Oddjob wore the exact same costume, but he threw his hat instead of a shoe.
Little known fact, the scene where Dr. Evil was in the therapy circle talking about his childhood ...... his speech was all unplanned and adlibbed by Mike Meyers. So the expressions of the cast were real. It was meant as a joke, but then they decided to actually put in the movie.
The Psychlogist in the Group Therapy scene was Carrie Fischer (Princess Leia in Star Wars). The name Allota Fagina was a take off of Goldfingers Henchman "Pussy Galore" (played by Honor Blackman).
Trivia for Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery - 1. Released in 1997; directed by Jay Roach; written by Mike Myers. 2. Jay Roach's wife Susanna Hoffs is part of the rock band The Bangles, and also part of the fictional band Ming Tea seen in this movie. 3. According to Mike Myers, he based Frau Farbissina off of two sources - the villain Rosa Klebb from the Bond film From Russia With Love and Canadian humanitarian Lotta Hitschmanova, who appeared in commercials on Canadian television. 4. Mike Myers didn't plan to play both Austin Powers and Dr. Evil. Jim Carrey was offered the role of Dr. Evil but was forced to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts with "Liar Liar." 5. Robert Wagner (Number Two) and Michael York (Basil) were at their peaks in the 1960s, and Mike Myers did the series partially as an homage to the '60s. Both actors saw their careers see a revival because of this movie. 6. Actors considered for other roles - Colin Quinn for Scott Evil, and Rhea Perlman for Frau Farbissina. Perlman had scheduling conflicts and said this was one of the roles she regretted turning down the most. Quinn also said he wished he hadn't declined the role of Scott. 7. American costume designer Phillip Morris had reportedly created a character named Dr. Evil in the 1950s, and eventually settled out of court in a trademark dispute after a legal battle of eight years. 8. Dr. Evil's look (the bald head, scar, and Nehru jacket) is based off of Donald Pleasence's performance of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, arguably Bond's main enemy, in the 1967 Bond film "You Only Live Twice."
I remember the commercial for this: "If you see one movie this summer, see Star Wars. But if you see two movies this summer, see Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery!"
do you understand that that if one knows the myriad references to the bond films that are in this film, that that makes everything more entertaining and fun?
Looks like you missed out on the Macarena, too. It was a song and a dance that took the world by storm in the late '90s, and that dance is what Dr. Evil was doing to try to connect with Scott.
Lmao I remember renting this with my dad one night, he thought it was the dumbest crap he's ever seen, and my abs hurt the next day from laughing so much
Yes, James Bond is known for his one liner quips, so the over the top puns are a parody of the JB franchise. Again, there are a lot of references to other Bond films, mostly ones done by the orginal actor, Sean Connery. You really need to watch some classic James Bond films to really get the jokes. I would suggest Goldfinger, Thunderball and You Only Live Twice from Connery and The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker from Moore.
@@AwesomeUSMovies Yes, indeed. Also, you're right that the same actor plays Austin Powers and Dr. Evil. Should you continue with the series, he plays increasingly more characters in each subsequent movie. And they all get a little more ridiculous and punny. Just have fun with them.

But for me, the second movie is where the series really finds its own voice. I highly recommend watching the second one. You don't need to know anything more about Bond movies, because it's all it's own thing.

If we ever have to back around in a tight little parking space, my family still refers to carefully backing up then forward and back again as "Austin Powersing it". Great reaction.
I see reactors comment about how jokes haven’t aged well but that’s the whole point of the joke. That’s what they’re pointing out, the absurdity of an idea. And it’s funny because it exists. Enjoy these jokes because we’re losing them every day.
The Austin Powers movies were iconic when they were released, I remember seeing them as a kid. They're reminiscent of a very specific period in time, where most people of a certain generation who were a certain age were all super into them. Part of the reason is that a lot of the comedy at that time had a void to be filled after iconic 80s comedies but before the era of iconic 2000s films/actors (which these movies helped usher in). Another part of the reason why it's reminiscent of a specific time is that the Austin Powers movies did tremendously well and then completely stopped, because Mike Myers was such a pain in the ass to work with on set. People stopped working with him. So the result is a set of movies that were weirdly specific to one set in time and will literally never exist again. But man, being able to see these movies for the first time growing up was such a great experience, even knowing what I do about Mike Myers.
Part of the joke is that it’s not supposed to age well, much like the Bond films it’s partially based off of. The Bond films can be over-the-top as well, but they are taking themselves semi-seriously, so it amplifies how silly they are sometimes. The only way to actually spoof Bond is to be extra over-the-top, so a good foundation in Bond-dom is great for adding to the experience of this flick.
Great movie. Fyi the warm red liquid phase is a spoof on Demolition Man. Also fyi the dance Doctor Evil did in front of his son Scoot is the Macarena which was a poplar Spanish dance song which had a special dance move in the 90's. The group therapy scene is one of the funniest scenes I have seen in any movie.
If you were to watch the Sean Connery James Bond films, and maybe a random episode of the old TV sitcom "Laugh In," your understanding and appreciation of the gags in this movie would increase by a factor of three or four.
Wow man! You always said you were from somewhere in Iowa. But I never thought you were that close! I'm from Harlan. Smaller town about an hour and a half west! Awesome videos man!!
Lol the guy who threw the shoe, random task is a knock off of a henchman you'll meet in 007 who's name was odd job. The random task guy turned out to be a real killer in China I believe, locked up. Austin Powers is Mike Meyers, that's also the voice of Shrek.. He's Wayne... Shwing!
He murdered someone inside a California prison while doing time for rape. (And was then moved to the prison that my mom worked at.) And he was from South Korea. China doesn't enter into it.
Random Task was a reference to a Bond villains henchman, Oddjob. I want to say it is the same actor but can't swear to it. International Men of Mystery were an actual thing, on which James Bond is based. England was struggling financially after the war and could not properly fund an intelligence network. Instead they appealled to the loyalty of rich young playboys who were looking for some adventure in their life and would have them travel the world and spy where they could.
According To Google - There have been 27 Bond films between 1962 & 2021 featuring seven different actors starring as James Bond (Sean Connery), (David Niven), (George Lazenby), (Roger Moore), (Timothy Dalton), (Pierce Brosnan), & (Daniel Craig).
The two sequels just keep getting better, definitely watch the second and third. That's the point, it's stupid. Mike Myers has a unique sense of humor, and he loves to push a joke to its fullest, which is why there was the laughing scene, the puns about caliber and getting ahead in life. As with many other movies, the three Austin Powers movies had everyone quoting the funny bits to each other. After watching the sequels, if you like this type of humor, I recommend watching the movie he made in 2008 that pretty much flopped but is so hilarious... Love Guru.
I love these movies and dana carvey was the original choice to play dr evil but because of the kinda person mike meyers can be he ended up doing austin powers and dr evil
The second one is so good , it builds on the gamble, of the humor of the first one. Mike Myers wanted to pay homage to Bond, and the great Peter Sellers, " Pink Panther" movies. And of course, Mike brings the SNL, and Shrek humor to it all. Playing multiple parts, is almost as good as Eddie Murphy, ..almost..lol❤😂
Been waiting for you to get around to this ridiculous hilarious flick which is totally worth watching! 😂😂😂 Glad to hear you still read and appreciate literature, im the same, don't ever stop reading ❤
Bond makes puns from time to time, but only a couple of times in a movie. I saw references for Diamonds are Forever and Goldfinger. Random Task, the guy that kept throwing his shoe was a take on Oddjob from Goldfinger who would throw his bowler hat. Goldfinger was also filmed partially in Las Vegas.
Everybody always says Austin Powers is a James Bond spoof, but it's more than that. It spoofs the spy craze of the 1960's at large. A lot of the spy films that James Bond inspired were groovier and sillier. One (for instance) had the title of Dr Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine. And the spies were always swingers! Bond was actually pretty refined compared to many of his imitators.
The thing about Bond is that he's so entrenched in popular culture that it's really difficult to know nothing about him, even if you don't realize that you know it.
Random Task = Goldfinger (1964) Doctor Evil = From Russia with Love (1963), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and For Your Eyes Only (1981) I'm specifically leaving out the character names from the actual James Bond Movies, but adding the Austin Powers names.
I hope the Bond movie request isn't a Daniel Craig... Because you won't understand what Bond is actually about with one of his. Watch a Connery or Moore. The Craig movies are just an over the top version of the Bourne series, mostly. Pierce Brosnan is fine, Timothy Dalton is ok, George Lazenby is a one-timer, before Connery came back.
🇬🇧❤Yeah baby yeah. You really need to watch early Bond movies and other 60s brittish spy films to pick up on all the joke but I am glad you are jumping in to the AP Universe. The next two films are even better😂 The third one is epic.....no spoilers🚨 beware of spoiler comments.
As a massive bookworm, I would have at LEAST assumed you read "Swedish Made Penis Enlarger Pump's And Me" "This sort of thing is my bag, baby!" All kidding aside, this movie is hilarious and I am glad someone advised you to see a 007 film first. If you're into Tom Hanks I have 2 recommendations for you. First: Saving Private Ryan. Second: Band of Brothers, and your life will change forever... P.S. Random Task is Bond nod to Odd Job. Who we banned from playing on GoldenEye! And recently had someone park so close up my ass I immediately thought of this scene, I was so pissed I had to laugh 30:26
All of the spy-film tropes are pulled from decades of James Bond films (especially from the 1960s era), Our Man Flint (1966) / In Like Flint (1967), the Mission Impossible television series (1966-1973), and other similar source material from that era. I just love how Mike Myers plays so many roles in this franchise. Looking for his cameos and alternate characters is like a cinematic "where's Waldo". The Love Guru (2008) attempted the same style of character-based humor but was not as well received. All three films of the Austin Powers series were widely touted, quoted, and memed.
Fembots were a take on Dean Martins Bond spoof , Matt Helm in the Ambushers or other Matt Helm films. A lot of Austin Powers was referenced from Matt Helm.
I was kind of surprised you never read "James Bond" it is based on a book. Maybe stuff like Sherlock Holmes and James Bond wasn't your bag. Great reaction. I had a feeling you would enjoy it.
The thing is, there were "IP Spoofs" in the 60s into the 80s in Europe, and it shows here in this movie as a spoof of that idea. His phone sound is from the 'Flynt' spy movies. Those are 👌 in their own way.
@tempsitch5632 Intellectual Property (IP)... 'James Bond, 007' as a character is owned by a LLC if I remember right. All spoofs of Bond are IP Spoofs. Like how ET and Star Wars had a lot of movie analogs of various quality.
I hope everyone enjoys my latest reaction. Just a reminder I now have a 2nd channel where I react to shows: youtube.com/@awesomeshows

All kidding aside, this movie is hilarious and I am glad someone advised you to see a 007 film first.
OMG... you crack me up.
ALL END CREDITS ARE IMPORTANT!
Hey Mate .. it says Austing 😊
He is Austining...roflmfao
I noticed the ‘Mysters’ but not the ‘Austing’. 🤭
@yesitislikethat woahhh .. missed it lol
What's gonna work? Team Work!
@yesitislikethat maybe it's Austing who's a man of Mysters. He could be right.
The 2nd one is much funnier…these are pure CAMP, I love that you had a sense of humor about it. It’s not for everyone 😂
Good to know
GO HAWKS!
He also never replied to me asking if he knows Robert B Parker books, which I assumed he would have known.
Nope haven't read him.
Nope haven't read those. Not really my style of reading materials
Would be interesting to watch you reacting to more Bond movies just to see you catch all the references.
There's actually a typo in the title, it says " Austing" instead of " Austin". Oops?
Wow.. how did I screw that up. Thanks for the heads up!
@@AwesomeUSMovies Mysters, too. 🙂
James, yes you are correct...Mike Myers plays BOTH Austin Powers and Dr. Evil.
NICE! Got one right
LETS GO HAWKS
The thing is, there were "IP Spoofs" in the 60s into the 80s in Europe, and it shows here in this movie as a spoof of that idea.
His phone sound is from the 'Flynt' spy movies.
Those are 👌 in their own way.
What is an “IP Spoof” ?
@tempsitch5632 Intellectual Property (IP)...
'James Bond, 007' as a character is owned by a LLC if I remember right. All spoofs of Bond are IP Spoofs.
Like how ET and Star Wars had a lot of movie analogs of various quality.
James Bond movies are all going to be comedies for you now.
