It's kind of hard to remember now just how original this was at the time. They really sounded completely new. There was nothing this heavy, yet melodic and "nerdy" around. I love this band up to 1998. The "new" Helmet breaks my heart.
No band has ever had this kind of disparity between lineups. This video clearly illustrates the supremacy of Page/Bogdan/Stanier era. The rhythm section is music porn. @ 3:54 Page looks back at Stanier who has just produced a drum F'ing clinic with WTF that was incredible look. A look that will never be seen with the current lineup. Its not the same, its not even close. Thank god for vids like this!
Priceless vid! Thanks so much for the upload. Helmet are the most unpretentious metal band ever- they don't bother about the look. They just get on stage and ROCK THE HOUSE!!
Helmet is still playing the Los Angeles area. I was fortunate enough to see them four or five times in a span of a year at the HoB, Viper Room, Malibu, Costa Mesa, etc. and never was the lineup any less than it ever was. Every show was absolutely amazing, especially when you're hearing this kind of brillance in some dive club. I saw they just played the viper room a week or two ago, but unfortunately I've moved out of LA.They still have a website and mailing list, check it out.
Wow, this was an amazing show, maybe their best. However, tonight they are going to be playing at the palladium with the rest of metal alliance tour! So psyched its gonna be my first time seeing these guys and they are by far one of my favorites if not favorite alt-metal band.
@panzerkeil I totally agree. I am a Helmet Fan from Germany. I was introduced to Helmet after my best friend was introduced to Helmet by his exchance Student. Ahh.. It must have been in 1993 or something.... Since then I am a huge Helmet fan. Too bad that the lineup is not the original anymore.
I would immediately marry one of the chicks during 1:25 - 1:30. Nothing's hotter than a chick bouncing to an old Helmet song. And to the uploader - man, your videos are a gift from heaven. Please upload more if there is. Helmet was the shit once /m\
Well we know there were two women in the audience! I love the stage-diving. Mosh pits and stage-diving!!!! Two great concert features from when I was a young'un. Just a question for Jim Hucks: I'm guessing this was recorded during the concert from the buffer zone between the pit and the stage. Was it recorded for the club or the artist?
I mostly sat on the edge of the stage between Page's and Henry's monitors. No one seemed to mind. I got permission to film, a wireless soundboard feed and the Helmet mailing address in Hoboken from Stanier before the show. Page didn't get the memo but he didn't care. I filmed for me on behalf of preserving history and the selfish desire to have a library of my own shows on video. But I'm happy to share. I got taken out by stage divers a few times but all in all I wouldn't have done it any differently except I might have asked the house guy to go easy on the 1K spot directly behind Page's head.
Totally cool memory, man. I'm certain that I won't be the only person thankful for having your additional descriptions about recording this great show! Thanks.
Exactly, XthatsrightX ... Helmet had nothing to do with grunge, other than that they used loud, distorted guitars. Some of their riffs may have been cut from the same cloth as Soundgarden, but Soundgarden were not really posterboys for the grunge sound anyway.
@Lopez1988chile And I have no idea why. They are the quintisential Thinking mans heavy band, kinda like Isis and Living Syndication, and also A Perfect Cirlce. Those bands 4 some reason just got more recognition but I always found HELMET as talented if not more talented than some of them.
I cant believe those dudes....kids are just standing a the front of the mosh, nodding along like it is playskool...hell some of em even seem to be trying "not to get hurt" roflmao........even when the tunes get a up a few amps
Yeah, but isn't that all too often the case at a heavy rock live show? A bunch of idiots more interested in injuring themselves and/or others than in grooving to the music. Look at those stupid assholes jumping off the stage with no regard whatsoever of the heads they are going to kick or the necks they are going to damage. Stage-diving is the single worst thing to ever happen to the live rock show. I used to grab crowd crawlers' achilles tendon and pinch HARD. Stupid, selfish fuckers.

One of the best metal songs ever !!!
outstanding footage! I actually met Page Hamilton in 2006, but sadly the only time I have seen Helmet was in 1997, great video!
It's kind of hard to remember now just how original this was at the time. They really sounded completely new. There was nothing this heavy, yet melodic and "nerdy" around. I love this band up to 1998. The "new" Helmet breaks my heart.

Amazing band. The jazz section kills me every time! So good, so good.
Great engineer work!

i dont think that they are he greatest ever, but they were certainly super duper influential. and they are my personal fav.
Best video of Helmet playing Milquetoast live. Nice one.
Jim Hucks is a great man. thank you Jim.
Simple yet absolutely badass intro
The two hotties drumming on the rail..... You don't see that shit now a days

Essa musica é trilha do Corvo com Brandon lee,filmaço...e puta som,Helmet viva os 90.
There's still ton's of good music. Member at the time this was out, people were saying the same shit about some other band in the early 80's.
They are great!
nice, I been playing helmet songs like tribute with my band, it really likes to people but they don´t know what band is,

What a monster band they were.
Hrmpf.... stanier completes it to 100%
C. Kfusion best drummer ever IMHO
i will always consider this the song with the best guitar solo of all time, even though the solo only consists of weird harmonies
FUCK YEAH!!!! love the bass!

playing just like CD. what a technique .
@panzerkeil Have no clue man, and I have grim feeling it may be a while before it returns 2 its former glory!
I love the 93 xrt tshirt

@Lopez1988chile And I have no idea why. They are the quintisential Thinking mans heavy band, kinda like Isis and Living Syndication, and also A Perfect Cirlce. Those bands 4 some reason just got more recognition but I always found HELMET as talented if not more talented than some of them.
@panzerkeil there's still great music today. You've just got to dig a little deeper.

ifutureman Agreed. Stage diving feet first is dickish behaviour.
Nope. Post-Hardcore.
just need a better drummer
gummodude Surely a large hint of sarcasm there? John Stanier is a God of drumming. 🎣
