The books are nearly all fake and these few which are real, are censored.
If you're wondering how people reach the books, the unreachable ones are fake. If you pause at 0:21, you can see the extreme contrast in color between the books on the two shelves. The bottom ones are actual books and vibrant in color, the above ones are actually just painted on to the wall and if you look closely, you'll see there actually isn't any books there at all. (Look how far the books stick out on the bottom shelf and compare to one of the top shelves). If there isn't a red tag on the shelf, it's not real.
Even the steps in the beginning of the video have no books on them, just painted on background (otherwise people would be kicking books all day).
There are pay-per-view telescopes all around That's how they are paying for this library.
So in other words, Function follows form, actually lags behind significantly. The scourge of the true engineer.
Its great really but i got a question. How are you supposed to reach the shellfs on the roof? Or are they just there only for aesthetics?
According to an article linked to in a reply above, they're not real books, just printed aluminum.

Please use your common sense and imagination, the foyer of this library is designed to futuristic and stimulate the imagination, it's called architecture and art. They could have built a square building with wooden bookshelves which is what you are thinking but China is a futuristic place and they chose to do it differently.
Only problem is every book in this library must be approved by the Chinese government.
As if other countries don't do that, try to sell any book in the US & UK which has contents against their own agenda, let's see how they will approve those books.
Cool. A library where 99% of the books are unattainable. China be like, "We have it, but you can't touch it".

Incredibly enjoyable at the first view, equally disapointing in the details : none of the uper stairs in the video is accessible, all the books inside are decoration (so sometime u have real books on the fake books, most of the time, not.. hurra). Where we attempt to cross the pride of this creation with the freedom she inspires, the result seems frustrating.

Once you check the average height of a chinese person, then you really get the sense of how shamelessly large this building is. Its a librarys library. A work of art. Its not practical.

Over half of those books are not accessible on those terraces.
90% are just painted on, only the lower 2 levels are real and the are CCP approved books

It is an impressive library. It is a pity that in the UK, the books are not the most important part of the libraries. In my library, the bookshelves have attached at the bottom small wheels and librarians are moving them constantly to and fro... Next stupidity is throwing away older than few years books. But I like very much a new library in Birmingham.

For everyone who is asking how to reach the books on the ceiling, you are using a two dimensional mind to figure out a 3 dimensional object. For anyone with an artistic mind and some imagination, it is clearly an artistic masterpiece. Did you also wondered why there's a sphere right in the centre of the foyer, this is not normally found in a library??? 😂😂😂
Nice building (it's was designed by a Dutch Architect) but sadly most of the books are fake, just paint on the background (see 35 seconds in the video) 😂
