Genetically we exist in two forms. Biology is determined by far more than just genes, though.
Genetically, we exist in four forms as defined by the _relationship_ between the chromosome pairs and the SRY gene. Thus there are four genetic sexes.
HOWEVER, gender is typically associated with expressive biology (anatomy), so I'd still argue there are only two _functional_ genders. In other words, we have two genders each expressed in two distinct genetic forms.

It also has to do with androgen levels, androgen receptor sensitivity and density within various tissues, not to mention in the brain. There are physical women who have XY chromosomes and normal SRY genes because of androgen insensitivity.
@@kevinklassen4328 There are two (excluding hermaphroditic) expressions of anatomical gender -- male or female. Genetic sex does not necessarily reflect the physical, which still leaves us with four genetic expressions.
The question then remains on Crowder himself -- does he consider gender and sex to be commutable?

Technically there are more chromosomal arrangements than XX & XY, which are classified as sexes if I'm not mistaken.
In my opinion the dagger that nobody ever seems to plunge into their argument is that there may be a genotypic spectrum for sex, but phenotypes are bimodal, with rare exceptions for individuals who manifest both sets of reproductive organs.
Beyond personal preference, utility is rarely ever mentioned either for the greater than 2 argument...

@@Biosynthnut Exactly. The phenomenon of the crossing over of chromosomes tends to cause particular abnormalities that otherwise wouldn't be present before fertilization.
After fertilization there are other mutations that can arise. For example Klinefelter's syndrome is a case where males end up with an XXY sex chromosome orientation which manifests most commonly in two ways:
Either the testes are very small and subsequently sterile, or they are able to inhibit the active region (SRY) of the Y-chromosome and manifest as female (though this case is rare).
A female equivalent would be Turner syndrome, where the female is born with only one X chromosome. The result tends to be a female whom is short in stature, has underdeveloped sex characteristics and is infertile.
Ultimately these are deemed to be different sexes from XX and XY according to most leading geneticists, but the take away is that sex is genotypic and gender is phenotypic (and manifest as majority male/female with a few mutational outliers depending on a wide range of factors).

This format is interesting because students might feel less intimidated talking with another student, than with Steven. And I think is a great idea to speak afterward with the students that were debating, and giving them feedback. Definitely not something any college professor offers. I liked the fact that is a conversation and not a debate. Debates don't change anyone's mind.
I was thinking the opposite. Not only are you having to combat your opponent, you're also thinking "oh shit, Steven is gonna tell me that I just made a really shit argument".

Parkers pretty smart. He knows that the word gender has completely lost its meaning and that the world is going to shit so hes not fighting it. The fact that he acknowledges that there are 2 biological genders, and that he is concerned about the sociological aspect of the word and what it denotes shows that hes pretty realistic.
I would love to sit with him and have debates! He seems to be the type that doesn't get offended or hate others that disagree with him and is actually open to hearing what others have to say. Respect, Parker! Even if we don't agree.

There only problem here is that while they may not be correct, winning a debate is so rarely about whether you’re correct since it’s actually about whether you’re persuasive, and arguments from emotion can be very persuasive, namely to certain (and honestly most) people.

Oh man these debates make me so excited to argue, I especially love pausing the video and strengthening my arguments. I love being able to see the opposing view point, it’s healthy and points out my own flaws. So despite disliking most of your stances, I really wish you’d come to my campus all the more.

I love that he's showing these students that it's OK to discuss different ideas, and he's giving them tools on how to have these conversations in civil and productive ways.
Something that I think about is the fact that as a society, we cannot keep changing the definition of words to whatever we feel like they should be. Language exists so that we can communicate, but if everyone is creating their own language and changing definitions, the world as we know it will descend into chaos.

Really enjoyed this. Recently had a debate with a "biologist" that was claiming transwomen are women. Had difficulty framing my argument and watching this have a different way I would have done so.

The issue is that they want to replace natal gender with sociological gender. Next they want to apply sociological gender inconsistently.
Probably the same reasons that transgenders are confused by it. Why get a sex change if gender isn’t connected to sex? That’s why this doesn’t make sense. These college kids are unfortunately not very educated or trained to debate and most aren’t educated on the subject of transgenderism.

Why do conservatives often confuse the definitions between biological sex and gender? You can literally look it up yourself. Oxford Dictionary defines gender in respect to social and cultural difference in a range of identities. While sex is defined as either male or female based on reproductive organs. It's not that hard to note the difference. One is based on your brain chemicals and one is based on your genitals.

My biggest complaint is their trying to force the rest of us to play along with their feelings. There's last time I checked anyway almost seventy so called genders, no way a sane person was could keep up let alone know which one a person feels like that day.

I have had this problem, I live in a small Texas Hill Country town, we are about 80 miles from Austin and it's where the weekend warriors head to for our river and three great state parks, we are in the cross roads to all three.
At my job we can spot the young liberals the second they pull in our parking lot, and have gotten some flak for mis gendering a few. Not that we care, but they do.

Just remember in an arguement "Not to appeal to authority." There is plenty of real life observations that disprove the calculations of the curvature of the earth. I'm not saying it's flat, I don't know for sure, but the testable evidence says that the information we've been given is incorrect.

Questioning is stupid important, which is why I love these videos. Makes me question myself and if they could change my mind.
So upsetting that fellow youth members lack a lot of conversation skills/acceptance/reasoning. I'm not commenting that because "I'm right;" it's because I can't find a good argument with someone. The self reassurance that they're good at those skills and then you begin to discuss whatever, they lose their confidence, get personal and shut down. (Most times.)

That's what it always has been. If you want to be a different gender to society, totally fine. The problem myself and many others like Steven have is trying to force people to conform to THEIR gender dysphoria. Anyone can pretend to be want they want, and I'll honor that. I have a Male to female friend that looks and acts like a chick and I treat her like one, doesn't change the fact shes a Male though.

Exactly. I'm a female, grew up with mostly male friends and mostly male family members, did a lot of typical things males did, but it's because I enjoyed it. I never once felt like I was a boy because I loved video games, Hot Wheels, and G.I. Joes. I was just a girl who liked boy stuff and acted more like a boy. Period. I'm "girlier" now (use make-up, wear dresses, paint my nails, etc.) but my interests just changed over time.
