I really admire his general demeanor: he’s a humble, happy kid on court. His ambition seems natural and healthy, neither a battle against inner demons nor some sick drive growing out of ego and spite. I don’t know, the kid looks pure. I guess Ferrero is really a great coach.

I don't think any of the Big 3 were as proficient from all parts of the court on all surfaces at his age. And his game is far more captivating to watch because of his aggressiveness and improvisation. He's always looking to create opportunities by doing something unexpected, rather than getting caught up in long and boring rallies (which was very common when it came to the Big 3). If he can stay healthy through the rest of this season, I expect him to successfully defend his US Open title.

"he doesn't have to contend with the big 3 so he'll get there easily", "his body will break down", "he won't have rivals to push him to keep getting better". @@drstew1 Cannot be compared to the big 3 era (3 greatest in the same era). Felix is no where near Alcaraz. Sinner still has a way to go. Rublev has the foundations, but needs to step it up. It's too easy for Alcaraz and even old man Novak to work them out in the biggest tournaments.
I have watched a lot of live tennis too. I remember Becker bursting onto the scene as the teenage powerhouse, blowing away some greats of the game. I remember the same euphoria that Alcaraz is getting. Becker dealt with it well considering how young he was.
I feel Alcaraz is very mature for his age and very honest. Like when he first beat Novak and he recognised the disruption Novak had suffered early that year. He said, after that won, that he needed to beat a 100% Novak.
I admire his honesty and how he keeps himself grounded. He knows Novak is not his real rival, due to the massive age difference and him being near retirement. Novak also said, he isn't his rival, Nadal is.
Pre 2011 Novak was affected by undiagnosed and untreated celiac condition, which affected his coordination and balance. His diet was poisoning him and burning him out. Roddick talks about this and noticed the transformation after 2010. His 2011 season proves that, once treated and he went 10-1 win that season in the H2H with Nadal and Federer.

He just needs to watch out for wear and tear and injuries. Many greats have said, that he doesn't need to chase down every ball.
It was amazing that old man Novak was able to run him around more than he was normally used to at the FO.
Novak defied the norms of old age in tennis and devised a genius game-plan to deal with him. This just proves his greatness. Yes he lost at Wimbledon, but it was close over 5 sets and that was with his first serve deserting him.
Also, like at the US in 2021, the pressure of history got to him (the chance to equal Margaret Court's Slams record and Roger's Wimbledon record).
That all said, Alcaraz is much needed new blood in a poor new gen field. He is amazing, but he needs a couple of serious rivals to create a Big 3 part 2.

(Posted 07-24-24) Since this video was made, Alcaraz has added two more majors to his resume (French and Wimbledon) and is the odds-on favorite to win the US Open later this year. But both Sinner and Medvedev are strong on hardcourts, as is Djokovic if he is healthy. And of course the Olympics are just days away; that will be on clay at Roland Garros.

WTF would Connors do when playing other men in this current generation? Lose points because he'd have to put out a tremendous amount of effort? ALL of the top players today are like magnificent machines, but Alcaraz has some things that the others just don't have. He is a quick thinker and His reaction time is phenomenal. His spatial sense is the best. His feel for the ball is the best. His placement is the best. He plays with the force of a Novak or Nadal, but he has the delicate touch and placement of Chris Everett, who could put a ball in a teacup. His anticipation is uncanny. He has the most complete game out all the grand slam players of the last 50 years (the only one who comes closest is Roger Federer). If he stays healthy and injury free . . . we tennis fans will be seeing a lot of beautiful tennis from this guy. 🎾

...... a bit surprised among the critics of Djokovic, Wilander seems to be copping flack still for not agreeing with the majority on him as " the goat " . Instead calling him the boat .
I think it's a fair comment from someone who reached the heights not far from. Fact is , Djokovic, while his longevity alone puts him right up there - his slam total grew exponentially after the 2019 season , courtesy of 1) the other two largely being gone & 2 ) the rest of the new gen being weak from 2020 to end of 2023 - with just a few proving up to the task .
I've played the game and followed pro tennis since the early 80 s; seen many great players come n go.
While I'd rank Djokovic certainly among the greats , mainly for his rock steady consistant game & his flexibility & certainly his longevity at the very top - I don't see him overall any better than many of the greats from the 80 s & particularly the strongest era of the 1990s . Any number of champions from either of those periods - could have taken it right to and rolled Djokovic frequently; i.e Sampras at Wimbledon & US opens ; Kuerton on clay , Agassi on indoor or Safin on and med to fast surface ...etc etc
Even wilander himself possessed at least the skill set Djokovic has, would have matched him on most surfaces equipment being equal.
Longevity, is one area the big three stand out - all three stayed at the very top, winning the biggest tournament s & competing for near on 14 to 15 years ; that's very unique

Can you imagine alcaraz being so pathetic as to throw his own mother out? I can't either!
What a weakling rune is! All I see are the endorsers backing away from rune in regret.
As for sinner, he certainly has more inner strength and toughness than rune, but he doesn't have the talent or drive to keep up with Alcaraz... nor does he bring the same excitement to the sport.
I'm not sure what you see, but I am confident that currently, there aren't any young players that are on Alcaraz's level. But, for the sake of the sport, I do hope that some emerge.

Neither Sinner nor Rune have shown the mental toughness in a BO5 format that Alcaraz has plus drama seems to follow Rune wherever he plays. But I say sinner is a big rival to Carlos because he has raised his level vs Carlos on all surfaces (grass, hard, clay) while Carlos has beaten him on hard three times. He has beaten Carlos in both formats , at Wimbledon in a BO5 and in fact had a match point at last years USO. It is true he hasn't made a breakthrough in slams or against Djokovic but I do believe he will continue to improve. Let's not forget that Novak took five years or so before he found a new level.
