I invested in the S5 last year and has never regretted it. Yes the AF is not perfect, but once you understand its limitations and figure out a way to work within them, this camera is a pure joy. And yes, I plan to stick to it for a long time.

Which lens do you use for it?
My LUMIX S5 arrived today. As a bmpcc user, i don't need auto focus for video. I'm not a vlogger or RUclipsr. But it works solidly for vlog, as far as i was able to test today. When I'm behind the camera, i pull the focus, or someone else will do it. I don't see a problem there. But the image quality, oh man. The ability to easily color match with bmpcc cameras. Braw. Ibis and light weight, same filter diameter F1.8 lens size. I will not list further. From canon to lumix.

Lumix have provided cinema features in their mirrorless cameras way before Canon/Sony implemented them into their mirrorless systems - anamorphic mode/shutter angle/waveforms/10-bit 422/custom luts/red recording frame/4:5 9:16 4:3 frame markers/tally lights/Braw capability/Prores 422/onion skinning for match-cuts & stop motion/custom WB/exposure spot metering - to name a few.
So many forget they released the S1H with 6K internal on a mirrorless body + cooling fan YEARS before the R5C (which looks like it drew its design from it).
I’ve literally said the same thing, once Lumix gets PDAF, it’s game over for most other brands. Especially when considering how many social media platforms are becoming video centric. They have all the rest of the tools.
Is that something that could be updated via firmware (if they ever do it) or is that a hardware thing?

Oh! Very cool perspective to use anamorphic mode for the additional vertical resolution and how you can repurpose that for vertical video. I never thought about that and now I can't believe I haven't been doing it! Total knowledge drop, love it. Thanks!
I’m using Lumix G9 for photography, truly amazing camera, and I love the 4:5 Instagram crop that I can get from that anamorphic format
I’ve been a Lumix user for years and have loved the s5’s so much I have four of them! However, when I set up clients for their own content studios, I set them up with Sony a4’s because it’s easier for them to use without thinking about it or needing to know settings, etc. I love what you said about using the right tools for the right job and it’s important for creators to embrace this one thing.
Yup. Paid shoots Sony and personal = S5 for me. It's such a fun camera with gorgeous images and excellent handling.

@@Princeton_James Funnily enough it’s the other way around for most people. Most videographers manually focus on paid gigs as you are behind the camera. The only exception is either when it’s on a gimbal or when you aren’t monitoring and it’s set up on a tripod or rig of some sorts.
Sony is really big in the social media/ RUclips world due to the amount of self filming.
Both companies produce killer cameras though, and once Panasonic released PDAF it will be a hard sell to move to any other system 😅
Yeah! LUMIX cameras rock! Been shooting mainly only on LUMIX cameras because of that V Log and 4:3 ratio as well! Super excited to see you use the camera more now in the future! What do you think you will film your RUclips videos with?
I’m glad you’re mentioning the value that this camera brings over the competition at this price point. So much bang for the bucks in terms of features. Great video Chris appreciate the video updates. I have Lumix S1 sometimes I want to switch camera brands. It's just better to wait and buy cheaper when the opportunity presents itself. I enjoy Lumix Color so easy to grade Vlog Profiles. Lumix keeps my work looking good and clients happy.

Great to hear that. The "content creators" with a camera worth less than 5000$ are so rare that it makes me always wonder if it's the only way to succeed on RUclips. Apparently it's not, and I'm glad I use the S5 for a year. Love the feeling of it.

I have had the Lumix S5 for almost two years and have no complaints really. It's well built and takes great images. I don't need high speed capabilities and the available lens lineup is plenty capable.
I got the S5 shortly after it was released. I’ve used it for photos and videos. It’s a great camera. Although I did get an EF mount adapter so I could use some Ef lenses, but it’s amazing even with adapters.
How is the Autofocus and are you happy?

I never thought about using anamorphic to shoot 4x3. I’ll have to try and figure that out.
Really feel like the S5 was a weird sleeper camera. I've been shooting with it for nearly two years, love it, but feel like everyone cried afoul of the auto focus when it came out and gave it a pass. I also think people were maybe sleeping on it because they were waiting for the GH6. But now that the GH6 is here starting to see the S5 get some love which is nice (I mean both are great for different reasons but still).
Yeah. Let them cry. Their crying allows me to find "like-new" S5 bodies for around 1,400. You cant even get a Sony a6600 for that price.
Yeah for slow mo addicts the GH6 makes more sense maybe.

The S5 is truly a magnificent camera. Like all systems it has it strengths and weaknesses and I think you covered them all. I really enjoyed your Lumix series of videos and it was refreshing to see something different to Sony or Fuji! This stuff keeps me subscribed :-)
It’s a great camera. There is no perfect camera yet.
If you need more resolution for you social media stuff, you can film in 6k photo mode with a 4:3 crop (better rolling shutter performances). Cheers!
We are using the S5 professionally. Don't forget the 6K raw is 12 bit, not 10. With 14+ stops dynamic range. Pure cine cam specs, unseen at this price point.
If they finally update to phase detect AF, I’d switch back in a heart beat! Color science, IBIS and controls are pretty amazing on Lumix cameras
1 up It would be so awesome to have the s5 with phase detect AF for under 2000 Dollar
Or make a LIDAR attachment they can just place on the hotsoe and boom, AF straight out of heaven.

That's just it, it won't be 2000 dollars, more like 2400 dollars. But who needs phase defect when you can shoot in Manuel focus?
@@thewalkingvloggingman7152 for real. Autofocus when shooting client work is only ever NEEDED when doing gimbal work and you don’t have a wireless follow focus or if you are running an unmanned camera on a tripod.
If you are holding the camera you should be manually focusing!

I'm glad Lumix is being used by good photographers and RUclips people. I mostly hear people using either Sony and/or Canon. It made me want to keep my Lumix G85. 😅
Honestly being a Hybrid shooter who enjoys shooting a lot of fast subjects quite frequently (birds, motorcycles, cars), and super low light scenes. I think I'd still rather keep my Sony A7IV.

I’ve been a GH5”s” shooter for 4 years. I use EF glass, I was using it for a huge range of work. Music video, construction , documentary and I’ve just bought a C300 mkiii.
It’s great having the canon autofocus however, you still miss shots if you rely to much on autofocus. Having the GH5s was one of the bet Learning experience as a new filmmaker. Now on REDs, C500mkii or my own C300 mkiii all the skills I learnt from being dialed in on the GH pay huge dividend.
There is no doubt LUMIX make a stunning and often ahead of their time spec camera. Nothing usually comes close to LUMIX pound for pound.
If and when they get their AF system sorted - watch out Canon and Sony.
Really interesting to get your opinion on both systems. I was thinking to go to Sony for all my underwater filmmaking needs to replace my Lumix GH5. At the end i decided to stick a bit longer to MFT, as its still a great system, and lets see if phase detect arrive one day.
Would better ISO from FF for underwater work more beneficial than M43 or APS-C? P.S, I can’t swim or dive. Just wondering for the technical side of underwater photography. Thx.
@@wingcreator Not really. Sure FF high iso is helpful, but unless you shoot in really dark conditions (and even!) its still quite limited underwater. It also really depend what you shoot. Often you are at a minimum of f5.6/f8, just because your corners are not that great wider open. Even at F5.6, I am often having too much light and would love to have some ND from time to time. There is so many more quality than just the sensor size to make a great underwater camera.

I have been shooting with a couple of Lumix G9 bodies for a few years(which, if you’re on a tight budget is an absolute beast of a camera for the price you can get it at). about to upgrade to full frame, but I just can’t bring myself to buy the S5 because of the auto focus. I shoot weddings mostly, so I need dependable run and gun auto focus and it has been an issue with the G9. As much as I would love to stick with Lumix, it’s going to be the Sony A iv for me I think.
I’ve been shooting on Lumix since the GH4 up to the S1H throughout the years and these S1 and S5 really are the perfect balance if you need an hybrid camera. You get the best features out of pretty much everything which other manufacturers are yet to offer.
Either they are better at stills or they are better are video, but these really shine doing both!
Just recently moved from the Panasonic to Canon because I got a C70 cinema camera AND a R5 dedicated to still or as a B Cam, but if it wasn’t because of my needs for a cinema camera, Panasonic S1 was actually the perfect all-rounder camera!
been using the s1 and s5 consistently for a while and absolutely love them. Literally only complaint I have is the interaction with usb-c on some gimbals causing freezes on the s5 but hopefully the next version will add a port that allows control without fighting for video feed!
Can’t get why Pana doesn’t allow to zoom image to see what exactly is in focus while you record your footage…

There's an error in the graphics regarding anamorphic, the numbers are flipped. 3328px is the horisontal res, 2496px is the vertical.
Which would be the right lens combo for the S5 ?

Is a camera that has open gate recording and better AF, BUT is APS-C would be something you would consider over the S5?

Recently there is a target 🎯 guide on my S5. I have no idea when and where I did turn on. Wondering is anyone know where i can turn that off.
To me lumix has the best user interface of any brand I have used.

Chris, thanks for creating this. I've been saving for an expensive Sony camera for a few years and after hearing your experiences with it, as well as other people, I just found it on an incredible sale (body + 20-60mm kit lens + 50mm 1/8 lens -> everything at around half of full price). Love the value you seem to get for the money. I just ordered the S5 now. Can't wait!
Everyone says right tool for the job. But specific to you and for the jobs you do, when would you use your Sonys now.
I think that was glossed over as most of what you did was praise the LUMIX and left it as that’s what your probably gonna use for most of not all your jobs.
Will the Sony system be for personal use, more low light scenarios…??? Would love to hear both sides as you have both systems and can choose either for whatever reason. We just want to hear or know what they are.

Chris Hau, could you please do a video on the more expensive panasonic cameras to see how they compare to the S5. I have an S5, love but I feel like I need a "cinema" camera to go with it to show up on bigger jobs with thinking about the BS1H or the EVA, but honest can't find any videos coming those in good ways in every situation, high dynamic range especially I may just have to rent one of them for the next job I get. I know I could just rig out the S5, but I just got rid of my 5D Mark IV I used as my main camera prior to the S5 and I feel like I need a second camera for interviews and such for jobs and the also want 6k for cropping a bunch when I need it.
How is it on long form content? Doesn’t it have a 30min record limit?
Wait are you saying the s5 can be updated to phase? I thought this was a hardware limitation and we had to wait for a new camera. If this is a software update coming down the road then I would actually purchase an s5.
My first weekend of having my S5 I shot a wedding that started to pour down rain and snow. I was terrified, but the S5 wasn't phased!

If I were to buy the S5 as an upgrade from my GH5, what lenses would you recommend? :)
I upgraded to the S5 at the start of 2022 after shooting Nikon for roughly a decade. Honestly the camera and even the kit lens have impressed me; I've shot several segments for a PBS doc on it and a TV ad; all using the S5 and kit 20-60mm lens. I like it enough that I switched my entire workflow to Lumix and picked up an S1H to use with the S5. I generally shoot MF, but did pull off a 35 minute video comprised of 90 shots in all AF just to really get a feel for the AF on the S5, and it did not disappoint. Ultimately I can't even complain about the AF after that, and really for me the biggest "complaint" for the S5 is that my pinky finger and part of my ring finger hang off the bottom of the grip. But then again this is why I use the S1H for handheld and the S5 on the gimbal. Hardly an issue at the end of the day.
Question... Do I get 5.9k footage in anamorphic mode when I use a external recorder?
It would be such a game chance if Lumix brought in IBIS. I'm using a S5 and a A7IV at the moment and I've been somehow using the A7IV less and less but having something that can reliably nail focus always comes in handy.
Lumix already has class leading IBIS... Do you mean PDAF? I'm looking forward to when they finally get that integrated, which presumably will be within the next generation or the one after that, given development lead times 🤞

I have been flipping between upgrading from the Canon M6 MKII to the R7 or the S5. The autofocus is what scares me. It sounds like you are saying its "not that bad" as everyone says. What would you recommend for talking head and vlog content?
S5 is good enough for talking head and vlog stuff. Check out Josh Cameron on YT, he even gives you his AF settings. Sam Holland just switched from Canon R6 to S5 as well.
It’s not perfect but it’s definitely not as bad as people make it out to be.

YES I LOVE THESE.
I‘m really not so happy with the slow motion taken in the S&Q mode on my S5. The bitrate of 20Mb/s seems to be too low for full frame (I had no complaint with G9 on this regard, although it has the same bitrare). If I‘m not mistaken, the A7iv takes slow motion in HD with 100Mb/s. And I like the results!
What?!? Only 20 Mbps? The A7SIII shoots 4K 120fps at 600Mbps.
I own the A7IV. It does shoot 1080p 120fps at 100 Mb/s. The results are awesome. I use that mode to shoot birds a lot.
Lumix is great bang for the buck. I've used both, but now find myself using the Fuji XT4. Just use the gear that is most intuitive for you
Fuji XT-4 user here too! Love me those Fuji colors and their lenses are incredible

I am M43 user but if I need full frame I think I would use a Lumix S5 because the colors and the ergonomics are way beter on the S5. I use Olympus gear and nothing to complain about it
What about raw image in both Panasonic and sony
I think the real question will be how will improved autofocus affect price? Right now the whole charm of lumix is that it's incredible value. My fear is that with demand spiking up with fixed AF, it'll at least bump the price up by 700 dollars, and then the next camera will be the same price as the Sony A74. Not a terrible thing, it'd be great for the company, but it's easy for us to imagine price remaining stagnant. The sad reality is panasonic only over-delivers because demand is unusually low, due to the AF. After that is fixed, we'll see a homogenization of cameras.
It will also affect image quality. There's a reason the image and color is better on Lumix cameras.
I don't think s5 anamorphic 4:3 is as you described. Only the S1H and S1 (only with upgrade) will do open gate, and give you the full height of the sensor.

Nice Choice! I do not see the reason to limit yourself only with one system!
