I carried a .40 during my full 20 year law enforcement career and it brought me through two officer-involved shootings. I hear all of the talk about 9mm, blah, blah, blah however I am still alive due to a .40 so I have no intentions of changing my caliber of choice now that I have retired.

Also with most compact guns, there isn't much difference in capacity. Most concealed carry instances are up close, and only involve a couple of shots at that range. The .40 just has more knockdown power. As for car jackings, the .40 reliably penetrates car doors.

So in all seriousness, if you where to shoot some kind of "meat" target (not gel where you can see 1/2" difference in penetration) with either 135g&150g or 155g&165, they would be indistinguishable wounds. Now I'm assuming and may be wrong . I feel I Iike what's more important is that you are always firing a round that's not going to change and your POI, by the FPS/ velocity being too different. If you have 2 or 3 shots that are where your trying to put them any difference in ammo isn't going to matter. And of course I don't mean a fmj vs a hp.

Bought my .40 about 7 yrs ago. I had shot plenty as a kid and very occasionally as an adult so I wasn’t as knowledgeable than as I am now. Main reason I got it is because of the price point. What I chose was on sale and got recommendations from a fellow coworker. At one point, I always said if I had to do it all over again I would go with 9 mm. But since I have joined a shooting range and have practiced and trained with it, that is no longer the case. It’s amazing how quickly I became more proficient and accurate with practice. It certainly does have a snap, but the more I shoot, the less it matters because I am able to control it much better now and will continue to do so. My only issue is finding a comfortable holster or way to carry it. I have a Ruger SR40c and it’s a little on the larger side of what is considered a compact. Especially the grip, I would consider it somewhat fat. I am a pretty lean guy of smaller frame and very little body fat and I have yet to find a comfortable IWB holster.I mostly use a belly band which is fine for the fall and winter months when I have more and bigger clothes on, but in the summer it’s a challenge to conceal my weapon well as it tends to print more in my summer clothes. I’m just going to be patient and try to get a good comfortable IWB so I can continue to use this as my EDC. Appreciate the video. Very well put and you certainly hit on some key points I had never considered before.

The pistol was trash talked when it first came out by the gun reviewers who seemed to be biased towards the upcoming micro 9’s. Due to the way it is engineered this pistol has become my “go to” carry. It shoots unbelievably well, rides very well on the hip or IWB. It is very accurate and because this has been my main choice for years, I handle it very well.

I really love the little Glock 27, I have 2 of them, a gen3 and a gen4! I never use any finger extensions or longer mags in them, it's not thier purpose and will just print longer if you use those! I like having my pinky under the mag and always shoot them that way. I also really like the thicker frame of the 27 versus some of the single stack guns, I feel that it spreads recoil out over more of the web of my hand. I apply the same theories to both of my Glock 29 gen4s, which I actually find easier to shoot than the 27s, but the 27s really are smaller enough over the 29s that they carry well when the 29s are just a bit too big! I use the same practice and duty ammo as the local Sherriff department and the 27s love it! I only shoot 180 grain bullets on a normal basis, some 135s rarely, and they love those, too! I consider the 27s to be the "chiefs special" of the Glocks, and I've owned nearly every thing else! You just can't beat the .40 in that small Glock, it just works so well in so many different situations!

Bravo-Zulu! You are the FIRST You-Tuber that actually knows the facts about concealed carry weapon and calibers! I have been preaching the same type of arguments to people here for years but I keep getting crapped on for choosing 40sw but I know that it is a Very Capable Caliber. I was an old school shooter for many years but I finally saw the light and purchased a Gen 3 Glock 22 40sw on Sept 2004 and started to use it as my primary CCW and also used it for IDPA matches and I put over 50K from 2004-2013 when I purchased a SIG P226 40sw and I retired the Gen 3 G22 and got a new Gen 4 G22. I have been a fan of 40sw since 2004 and today I own several from Glock, SIG, Smith and Wesson and Walther. One thing that I always tell friends when they ask me what gun to get is get a 40sw because you can have 3 different calibers if you choose the right pistol. Pistols like Glock you can have a 40sw, 357sig and 9mm barrels all in a G22, G23, G24 or G35 pistol that is allot of flexibility and SIG pistols give a 40sw/357sig and most have Caliber conversion kit where you can get a new slide for going down to 9mm.
Because of all the active shooting that have happened I have upped the type of ammo that I carry to Underwood 135gr JHP 40sw which works GREAT out of a Glock, SIG and Walther pistols! This ammo is High Performance with a Muzzle Velocity of 1400 FPS and Muzzle Energy of 588 Ft/Lbs that is serious power coming of a 4.6 inch barrel and even if the target has body armor the amount of Energy that is being DELIVERED will CAUSE Internal Injuries that is something that NO 9mm ammo can say!

I love the .40, in fact I inserted 357Sig into my carry rotation after making sure that I can consistently get tight groups at defense target distances. The only downside to the 357Sig is the price. From that note is where 40S&W comes in. Swap barrel, and there you go! Plus, 40 prices are good right now.

At first I put a 22lb spring like a lot of people recommend but it was too heavy it was hitting low & having trouble sliding forward that's how I knew it was too stiff that's like for 357Sig or 10mm. I agree that 38spl snubs recoil a lot so do 380acp pocket pistols.

Thanks for the video. There are 3 things that change recoil which are firearm weight, projectile speed, projectile weight. If any one of those is changed there will be more or less recoil depending on the change. A Glock 17 recoils less than a Glock 22 and similarly the 19 and 26 recoil less than the 23, 27 due to the base firearms in each size weighing essentially the same as the same size but different firearm.
9mm projectiles typically range from 115-147 grain. 40 S&W typically run 155-180 grain. There are options outside the listed weights but these are generally what's seen. Speeds for the 9mm are in the 1100-1200 fps range and the 40 S&W commonly go 850-1100.
The numbers of each caliber and firearm show why a 40 S&W recoils more than a 9mm. Same weight firearm running a heavier projectile at similar to slightly slower speeds depending on load.
The felt recoil of a 40 S&W is more due to these factors. Run a 40 S&W in a heavier platform like a 1911, CZ 75, Or S&W 4006 and the round becomes easier to shoot well.

Great video. I have pistols chambered in a few different calibers, including .40 and 9mm. Modern 9mm is very effective, but if you compare a 9mm Gold dot or Federal HST to a .40 equivalent, there's no question the .40 hits harder. The energy lb/ft of a typical .40 S&W is equal to or greater than that of a typical .45 ACP, but the capacity in most guns is closer to 9mm. IMO .40 is a more versatile caliber. There are target loads pushing barely over 300 lb/ft, and +P loads close to 600 lb/ft. 9mm can't do that. With .40 you can potentially use the same pistol for concealed carry, home defense, and even large predator defense with +P hard cast. Something like a S&W compact 4 inch or Glock 23 would allow that.

I moved to the .40"S&W-180gr JHP in 1990 and never looked back, to this day. In fact at first my "dream pistol" was Col. Cooper's GP35 in .40"G&A... but that was a wildcat, pistol AND round, that no one ever made ammo for in any numbers to matter. So for EDC I kept going from and to, a Combat Commander (my load of choice at the time been the 185gr JHP .45"ACP at around 1,000fps) and a FN-HP/GP35 or a HK-P7M11, without really been truly satisfied by none of the above.
To make a really long story short (because at first I really hated the Combat Tupperware... ugly son of a gun, plastic sights and horrible trigger!!!), in 1990 Glock introduced it's G23gen2 and... I just fell head over heels on the concept of the 13,15 and even later 22 180gr .40" rounds at around 1,000fps in a comparable package to my Combat Commander! So, to say that I became a G23/.40" fanboy is probably a huge understatement.
By the way my wife, who's really petite, "liberated" a G27 from the safe as her EDC around the turn of the century?... She's 1.5m tall and weights 43kg in her jeans and boots, and none of us is in prime shape anymore, but she shoots her G27 LIKE A BOSS! So my advise to the people who find the .40"S&W "too hot to handle", it's just a matter of technique really. Not strength, technique and working at it a little. Shooting is a perishable skill anyway, so you have to keep at it if you want to stay sharp... and we love to shoot our .40"s. :>0

9mm, .40 and .45 all have a fairly similar range of muzzle energy depending on the ammo you choose. You lose a bit of capacity compared to 9mm, but not as much as with .45 ACP. But when you're talking about 17 rounds of 9mm versus 15 rounds of .40 S&W, you have to determine for yourself how important those extra two rounds are. There's good ammo available for all three calibers, and they're available in modern pistols. And there are times now when .40 S&W might be cheaper than 9mm. I personally feel it comes down to preference when deciding whether to carry a 9mm, .40 or .45. Or even a .357 SIG or whatever. Something around that power range.

I have been a gun owner for about a year and a half. Took about 4 months of research to decide on 40S&W and an M&P Shield 2.0. Heard how 'snappy' 40 can be in my research, but found the recoil manageable.
About 3 months later, I started an armed security position and was happy to be given a G22 for duty use. A few months later, I decided I wanted a full sized pistol for home defense. Went S&W again with a 4.25" barrel M&P 2.0 C.O.R.E. then put a light and optic on it.
I chose 40S&W because it has more energy than 9mm, and because it's a larger round, expands better and doesn't overpenetrate like 9mm can.
"But you need penetration" 40 penetrates enough, and dumps all its energy in the target. I've heard from people who have seen 9mm and 40S&W and the results speak for themselves. When you need to stop a threat, 40 just plain works in 1-2 rounds. 9 you might need 10 rounds, like the video said, if you last that long.
People can dislike it and call it a dead caliber all day long; more for me!!!!!!

I carried the .40 for most of my career also. We went to the 9mm Glock 17 the last 2 years I was a cop. The switch was made for several reasons. One of them was the repeat shot capability of a more controllable 9mm versus the raunchy kicking .40 (whatever). Personally, I light the idea of a round that will stop the fight. I like the way you did this article.

I got my XD 9102 in .40 only because it was my first gun, and I had to grab a gun quickly before going to an indoor range with my cousin. I was new to the gun world and it was my first time visiting a gun store and gun range. The salesman was very knowledgeable and suggested an XD instead of a Hi point. There were no 9mms in the XD line anywhere and my cousin wanted to get to the range. After calling around we decided that a .40 XD was more than adequate. I made a good choice and I still have that gun which is my home defense tool. I then went to a shot show and shot several Glocks in various calibers. My XD felt a lot better and still has minimal felt recoil even compare to the 9mm Glocks. I later purchased a Shield also in .40 a few years ago and that was supposed to be my EDC, but it eventually will be my conceal carry gun. I did research on the .40 because there were suggestions that a 9mm was better. Not true. I read several anecdotal stories about trauma surgeons who wrote about their experiences with gunshot victims. Quite a few wrote about the .40’s lethality compared to the 9mm. More survived 9mm gunshots but most didn’t survive any .40 gunshots. Finally, I read about the .40’s greater energy compared to the 9mm. Estimates are 13% to 15%. I’ll take those advantages especially after having faced 4 ghetto ex-cons who tried to do a home invasion while my handicapped, elderly mother and I were home. They were bigger and stronger than the average person. If it wasn’t for the need for capacity, I’d have gotten a 686 Smith & Wesson revolver using .357 loads. That was the smoothest and most pleasurable gun I’ve ever shot. The .357 round barely had any recoil, felt and actual recoil.

My first pistol was an XD40 as well and I still own it like you, it's doing house duty. Recently bought a S&W 40c that I like a lot as a carry piece.

@@JasonON I'm hearing a lot of good things about the .40 S&W compact. A popular gun RUclipsr said its her favorite gun and she tests and owns all kinds. Her explanation was very impressive to the point where I'll either get it or the Rolls Royce of guns, the CZ.

As someone recently said, on its best day a 9mm can’t equal the power of a .40. Of course that doesn’t mean a 9 isn’t capable. 9mm is a fine round. But it isn’t the .40 fans that are knocking the 9, rather, just the opposite. (I carry both depending on mood)

My first handgun was a 40. That was 30 years ago. I haven’t shot it in 25 years but just recently pulled it out and cleaned it. I intend to start practicing with it again. I also intent to get a 9mm which may become my primary as recoil is less. I will not, however, part with the 40. It has some sentimental value to me and frankly it’s a wonderful weapon.

I was a LEO with the DOD, and we went from 9mm Beretta DAO with like a 35lbs trigger pull (LOL). Then we went with an S&W M&P .40, I liked it so much I purchased one for myself. I now reside in Wyoming, so I am going with an H&K P30 L and a USP 45, so I can shoot .45 Super. I my also go with an FNX 45, with the 460 Roland conversion, which I will wear in a chest rig.

40 SW is the best all around IMO. I have several pistols from 380 (Ruger), 9 (SW/Glock), 40 (SW), 45 (Glock), 10 (SW/Glock.) Only one .40 so far, but it is my favorite of all of them. The .40 in the M&P 2.0 .40 4" Compact is my favorite of all of mine. I shoot it better than any other, and the impulse of it is ideal to my mechanics.

The M&P 2.0 40 4” is the gun I’m leaning towards. Also looking at the Glock 23 but I’m pretty set on the M&P. Only handgun experience I have is with the M9 when I was in the Marines. Grip felt too big for my smaller hands. Hoping I can maneuver and control the M&P.

@@martee4 You'll love the M&P...IMO, it's the best there is for the money when all things are considered. And with the 40, you're getting the most versatile one. Look into Apex Tactical. They've tons of stuff for M&Ps. I also own a few Glocks. I like them, the aftermarket support is nice, but M&P I much prefer to them if I'm honest. Cant go wrong either way though honestly.

I agree with you 100%. I carried a Beretta 96 with the USINS and later with the USCBP. I carry either a Sig2022 (12 rounds) in 40SW or a Beretta APX (15 rounds). It is a very powerful and very easy to control with proper training and an ergonomic weapon. It is the closest you can get to a 357 Magnum power with a semiautomatic. I shoot a 155gr factory load (RP or Win) at 1200 to 1250 feet per second that is basically the same as the industry standard 357 Mag 158gr bullet at the same speeds. The 40SW is not a caliber for shooters that do not want to practice frequently. Many females in my unit shot the 40SW better than their male counterparts because they were more receptive to proper training. It is not a caliber for compact guns. Try shooting a 357 in a Model 19 or 66 in 2.5" barrel with a full load and is painful, try it with a heavier L or N models and it become comfortable; same for the 40SW. The smallest gun I shot the 40SW was my service HK P2000 that carried 12 rounds but only had a 3.5" barrel for better concealability, not great but not bad either.

10mm is much closer to .357 Magnum power. It uses the same bullets as the .40 but pushes them up to 200fps faster. You can also run .40 in most 10mm pistols without any issue. A great round, and the king of semi-auto calibres.
