I had three of the "scandalous" dolls as a kid; Pregnant Midge was actually one of my favorites *because* of the baby mechanics. I have to wonder if part of the idea came from watching real kids do just as I had previously when I wanted to tell a doll story that involved having a baby: Shove a plastic egg under one of Barbie's loose-fit dresses. I remember seeing the recall notices in stores over the Tanner doll...several weeks after I had been given one by my parents. Fortunately, by that stage in my life I had outgrown "put everything in your mouth that isn't nailed down" so my parents didn't take the doll away or anything. In hindsight, the pooping mechanic seems weird at first, but if you think about it a little bit longer, in some ways it teaches kids that you should pick up after your pets...and less directly, it might also teach them not to pull/push an animal's tail unless you want a nasty surprise. [Albeit with the doll that would be a much safer way to learn that particular lesson.] I also had the video-cam Barbie, though because I was so young it was really more because the *idea* of having a Barbie with a camera was cool more so than to actually film things with it. Never heard about the FBI scare until now.
Learned this from the Barbie episode of “The Toys That Made Us” but after Jack Ryan died, Ruth Handler genuinely refused to acknowledge his help in creating Barbie.
I think the girl scout one is really people projecting their own adult views of Barbie onto kids tbh. (Actually quite a few of these are. I'm sorry but, out of them all, I'm bothered by the fact people saw Midge , the pregnant Barbie doll, as a taboo. How many kids genuinely ask their parents for a younger sibling and see their own moms pregnant? That's nature! Humans procreate and continue their bloodlines. It was a wonderful doll which I wish I had as a kid! The whole Happy Family line was lovely and of high quality and even inspired a doll show on RUclips. The Mexican Barbie looks like Elena of Avalor, she is gorgeous! I had the Barbie with the dog that poops 😂 She was so beautiful. The set was funny. The tattoo Barbie is not that bad, just not very practical. Same for the video recording doll. The scale is very sad. 110 for a tall woman like Barbie isn't particularly healthy. But weight overall depends on many things. I weighed that much in grade 2... So, doesn't really bother me. The weird duet booklet was unnecessary. But overall, the dolls aren't that bad, and that was an educational video. Didn't know about the first and last facts.
I think what is more concerning about the girl scout barbie is that she's wearing a green sash, meaning that she's a junior scout, which puts her age in the 8-12 range which I dont think is exactly accurate lol 😂
I love the Oreo cookie Barbie, it makes me wanna eat more Oreos ! I have the video girl Barbie, the pregnant Midge, Barbie with poop dog, tatoo Barbie, 2 of the Mexican Barbie ( love her ) and growing up My scene dolls ! Love it !
My mom collects Barbies and has the dog walker Barbie, i believe its the updated version of the one featured here. It doesnt have any magnets, but you’d think the pellets would still be a choking hazard. I also don’t understand the appeal to “pooping” toys, its gross.
Another doll that had controversy was “Hello Barbie” that you can connect to the internet and talk to. Like a amazon Alexa. Invasion of privacy and what not.
I actually remember picking out Share A Smile Becky when I was with my grandmother at Toys R Us. She thought it was an... "interesting" choice lol. Becky was my favorite Barbie doll as a kid, I hope she made a lot more kids happy.
As a Hispanic I’m insulted that they removed Mexico Barbie. There was nothing offensive about it. Latino/Hispanics and our culture need representation also.
I think the Teen Talk Barbie controversy was another example of people looking for issues where there wasn't any. Could Mattel have come up with some better phrases for the doll? Definitely. But I don't think any of those phrases were as bad as some parents were making them out to be. The doll was supposed to be fun and relatable and have more of a "valley girl" type of personality which was common for the time period. Lots of teen girls going to the mall and being silly and kind of ditzy. That's not saying all girls are like but it was just something fun. It's just like the movie Clueless isn't saying all women are like the girls in that movie and I don't think anyone who loves that movie is saying it's an 100% accurate representation of women or girls. I just don't get the people who made such a huge deal out of a doll. She wasn't telling kids don't do math or give up if it's hard she was just saying math class is tough which I think it should be okay for kids to express that kind of stuff.
The Barbie doll that recorded video actually recorded some evidence that was later used in the Turpin family case. The evidence was submitted by police, though, not by FBI spying.
I Totally agree with you on the growing up Skipper and pregnant Midge. What an exde5way to open a dialogue with your children about physical changes in a body. I also think the Girl scours doll would have been better off on skipper or one of the other younger cousins. Great video. Thanks
Also Barbie had a line called My Scene Because Bratz where the biggest in the market in the 2000's they had the big lips and the big shoes and had more style for the time
I had a growing up Skipper when I was little. I loved her. One of only 2 dolls my parents would let me play with. I want to find her again but Ebay is way too pricey.
I was lucky enough to snatch a Growing Up Skipper brand new in box, she's not perfect but it's still pretty good for the amount I got her. I remember back in 2007 or something they recalled a bunch of Barbie accessories due to lead paint being used by Mattel and Fisher Price in their Chinese factories. Like a 3 billion dollar lawsuit.
I had the Happy Family Midge and baby doll and I also had the Allen and Ryan dolls. And omg I loved those dolls!!! They were honestly everything to me. The baby literally had a baby smell to it (if you have had the doll you know what I'm talking about). I remember being upset when I realized that I accidently threw away the little yellow shirt top for the baby. Ugh I honestly miss these dolls. I really wish I also had the grandparents.
I agree with everything, some controversies are really silly and I think the final result was to publicize the product even more. It's like when a song or film gets censored everyone wants to hear or see it to know what the fuss is about. So maybe Mattel even created some of these themselves so everyone would talk about them.
I def think the computer engineer Barbie was the worst. 😆 Everything else was just a little cringey. If I was a little girl excited to have a computer engineer Barbie and read that she let the boys do the cool stuff, I would’ve been pretty mad. 😂 Without the book, it would’ve been great, but then the book comes along and tries to limit her.
Oh my gosh!! My sister and I legit had 2 of the Barbie and pooping Tanner dolls! We each had our own for some reason haha I think the actual pellets were also a choking hazard since they’re so small and kinda magnetic? I don’t remember exactly but I think the little poos were also magnets or it was dangerous to swallow the magnets with the pellets. I also remember the controversy that came up a while after my sister and I had been gifted these dolls and wondering if we should return them but at that point they were too well played with! Anyway, she was always one of my favourites! Fully articulated, gorgeous hair, the dog was cute and fun to make poop haha. I loved her and thankfully we were old enough at that point to properly play with them :)
I suprised that RUclips hasn't forced onto the kids channel where you can't comment. I know he said it supposed to be for adults but unless you're really young you should be able handle barbie scandal. It not like it's blood and guts. By the way does anyone know why they got rid of barbie baby sister krissy
@@machi5550 That's what they did with Kelly, but I'm pretty sure the OP was asking about what happened to Krissy, which is a story that remains unknown.
I remember the "math is hard" Barbie scandal. Didn't realize that it was "maths is tough" in the UK, makes sense it would say maths instead of math...but never knew it was a different phrase in the UK!
People need to get a grip. It's a doll for God's sakes. If parents are that upset then why don't they just do their job and explain to the children what they don't like about the doll or how they could view it differently or what the doll was actually intended to do.
I agree with you, I don't think pregnant Midge is bad because Midge looks 35 and pregnancy is okay. It would be different if she was a teen. I had this doll and I loved it because I always pretended that my barbies had babies all the time and I turned out good haha.
There's also three more I can think of. It does relate to the tattoo Barbie you talked about in this video, and that is non other than Butterfly Art Barbie. Apparently she was controversial for the same reason and apparently the line was recalled. Also the first issue 1995 Teacher Barbie was recalled because she was accused of indecent exposure from not warring panties. Also we can't forget the time she broke up with Ken and became more rebellious lol
I had the Barbie with the pooping dog doll and it was actually my favorite toy! Just because you could feed the dog, wasn't much for the pooping part. I just liked the feeding part. I just played with the dog honestly and ditched the doll :D There was also a version with a peeing cat with a litterbox.
I hav the pregnant Barbie in the shorter denim dress (w/o freckles) She was pulled from the shelves due to the controversy. She was later released w/ a “gold wedding band” on her left finger along w/ a “Ken” doll cut out in the background sending the msg “she was married” Mine is mint in the box. Definitely suggest anyone who’s interested to get their hands on her b/c her price is only going to heavily increase. I noticed on ur “sleeping beauty” video that the comments were turned off. I collect essentially only “collectors barbies” mostly the glamorous ones. I do love sleeping beauty. She is my favorite Disney princess. There was a sleeping beauty that was released in 01” from the Mattel Disney “sparking line” she’s featured in her “blue” dress. One on eBay finally popped up ..I bought her ..she’s very rare. Hardly any dolls of sleeping beauty were made in her blue dress. Barbie also has her own line of “storybook princesses” ...I have all of them..they are not as rare but all gorgeous
The dont eat book to me is sanctuary just hilarious. I think it’s so funny people are offended by it. I’m literally a plus size person and im not offended and think its funny. Same with the math is hard one. Math IS hard
The version of the Becky scandal I heard stated that her wheelchair didn't fit into the Dreamhouse lift. Seems Mattel have learned their lessons as the promotional materials for the 2020 Dreamhouse feature a lift with enough space for the new Barbie with a wheelchair.
Hi Joey I discovered my collection of Beach Barbies they are Mermaid Tail Barbie I have 2, Glitter Beach Barbies, sparkle Beach Barbies palm Beach Barbies and Ken , Florida fun Barbie and other set and California girl Barbie and other dolls set
RE the Oreo doll- [I'm not black, so take this with a grain of salt] From what I understand, the word Oreo was used to refer to black people who "act white", which a lot of black people (rightfully) took offense to. So Mattel releasing a black doll promoting Oreos was seen in bad taste. It's possible they didn't know, but the outrage was understandable. Again, this is just my understanding as a nb person, so I could be off the mark here. If anyone who is black wants to weigh in and add on or correct me, it'd be appreciated.
but the stupid part is that they had a white version, so what was the secret racist message about the white doll? could it it be that the dolls were literally about the fucking oreos printed on their shirts and not some secret racists conspiracy? and they took out a black doll to be more inclusive because most barbies where all white? you cant win
Omg, I remember the pooping dog! My friend had it and I envied soo badly.. I'd play with it now too tbh, at that time those "pooping"/"peeing" (like the baby born) dolls were such a thing! (I got sentimental, yeah)
My Mom talked about how 1 of my sisters had the pregnant Midge doll and how she would find the belly on the floor. We also had the pooper scooper Barbie. I also remember when the Barbie video camera doll came out and seein' it in a plastic case.
Kids definitely don't think racist. They are only taught to be that way. Most of these dolls I had as a kid and never thought of them as bad or anything. You can tell how sensitive people are now days, not saying it's a bad thing but not saying it's a good thing either lol.
I also didn't see anything wrong with the pregnant Barbie doll or the growing up Skipper doll because they represent very real and natural aspects of adult hood and puberty. I never thought that the pregnant Barbie looked too young, when I had this doll I thought she looked like a woman who was of the perfect age to have babies. And the Skipper doll shouldn't have been an issue either because there's nothing wrong with showing puberty in a doll, it's something that every young girl goes through and boobs are nothing to be ashamed of.
I remember people being up in arms about pregnant Midge because she didn't wear a wedding ring. Like these things are glued to your fingers and you can't just take them off while caring for your baby.
i think the pregnant midge one is so silly. because midge was part of the happy FAMILY line. she had like 2 other children already, how is being pregnant any different?
I heard about a lot of these controversies and find modt of these silly but you left out the roller blading barbie whose rollerblades shoot sparks that could cause fires and Ken with his cock ring. Also I never thought of barbie as a teen more of a young adult but then again she can be twenty something if you want her to be.
I Understand People Complaining About this lists of Dolls, that's why Mattel change her now. So Collectors Don't blame Mattel For What Barbie Become Now, They Change Her To Be More ''Children' Toy with less quality.
Taking notes for the doll line I mentioned in your last vid. XD Just kidding, some of these were inexcusable and/or easily avoidable. However, people/companies make mistakes sometimes, especially in the span of 60 years. And sometimes people get upset for dumb reasons. Barbie in particular can't get a break, even if they're just doing their best to do the right thing.
i had girl scout barbie. bc barbie was my favorite thing atm and i was in girl scouts. i lost all her clothes and accessories but i still have the doll itself. i didnt even like her clothes as a kid. i just liked that she came with tiny cardboard cookie boxes. definitely not controversial.
Lol... This reminds me of the SNL skit where Mattel decided to introduce an Asian Barbie... there's a lot companies need to consider when marketing a new doll.

Love it !
I'm a grown ass woman who had the giggles all day about you commenting the words Barbie and her poop Dog. Lol
THEY ARE EVIL
My mom collects Barbies and has the dog walker Barbie, i believe its the updated version of the one featured here. It doesnt have any magnets, but you’d think the pellets would still be a choking hazard. I also don’t understand the appeal to “pooping” toys, its gross.
Another doll that had controversy was “Hello Barbie” that you can connect to the internet and talk to. Like a amazon Alexa. Invasion of privacy and what not.
I had the pregnant midge doll as a kid. I’ll see if I still have her.
Do you?
Do you still have her?
i had the girl scout barbie when i was a girl scout, and her uniform was almost exactly like what my troop wore. her outfit was completely fine.
The new wheelchair Barbies come with ramps for the Dream House. And the newest houses come with an elevator that the wheelchairs fit inside.
I actually remember picking out Share A Smile Becky when I was with my grandmother at Toys R Us. She thought it was an... "interesting" choice lol. Becky was my favorite Barbie doll as a kid, I hope she made a lot more kids happy.
I've always wanted the Happy Family dolls. The detail and quality they put into those dolls is totally unmatched with Mattel today.
I was bad at maths in school and I would agree with the doll that it's difficult. People really need to get a life
The Barbie doll that recorded video actually recorded some evidence that was later used in the Turpin family case.
Thanks
People were so ridiculous, they never understand that it's a doll and education comes from their parents, not from a doll... 🙄
Beauty Inside A Box! Thank you for making this video lol I actually do remember a few of these barbies
Thanks for this video, it's very interesting ! I think you should do one with Monster High too, they've been through so many controversies
I agree with everything, some controversies are really silly and I think the final result was to publicize the product even more. It's like when a song or film gets censored everyone wants to hear or see it to know what the fuss is about. So maybe Mattel even created some of these themselves so everyone would talk about them.
i dont remember looking at pregnant barbie and being like "oh i should get pregnant" lmao i was like cmon whats she gonna name it
I def think the computer engineer Barbie was the worst. 😆 Everything else was just a little cringey. If I was a little girl excited to have a computer engineer Barbie and read that she let the boys do the cool stuff, I would’ve been pretty mad. 😂 Without the book, it would’ve been great, but then the book comes along and tries to limit her.
I am a graphic designer and hate coding! It's literally me asking a friend to help me code something. 😅 Coding for me was just boring
@@franfinesim Ahaha. I hadn’t thought about that. Lol That def puts things into perspective a little more thanks!
I want that Oreo Barbie, her accessories are cute but the amount people want for her... 😑
Happy Family was one of my favorite Barbie lines EVER!
There is also the infamous Barbie vs Bratz controversy, where Mattel showed that they're actually very petty.
Super cool video! Had no idea about these controversies.
Oh my gosh!! My sister and I legit had 2 of the Barbie and pooping Tanner dolls! We each had our own for some reason haha
I think the actual pellets were also a choking hazard since they’re so small and kinda magnetic?
I’m pretty sure they just replaced her with Chelsea.
@@machi5550 Why though?😮
@@machi5550 That's what they did with Kelly, but I'm pretty sure the OP was asking about what happened to Krissy, which is a story that remains unknown.
I remember the "math is hard" Barbie scandal. Didn't realize that it was "maths is tough" in the UK, makes sense it would say maths instead of math...but never knew it was a different phrase in the UK!
I'm 5'7" in 83 I weighed 110lbs and health
People need to get a grip. It's a doll for God's sakes. If parents are that upset then why don't they just do their job and explain to the children what they don't like about the doll or how they could view it differently or what the doll was actually intended to do.
Can you do Bratz, Monster High, and more doll scandals
I agree with you, I don't think pregnant Midge is bad because Midge looks 35 and pregnancy is okay. It would be different if she was a teen. I had this doll and I loved it because I always pretended that my barbies had babies all the time and I turned out good haha.
Magic earring Ken and Becky have been the biggest scandals. I remember both of em being in German newspapers back in the 90s
You didn’t talk about when barbie left ken for the surfer dj named blaine who was half her age
how was he half her age? if barbie is meant to be a tennager was he eight? if shes 22 then hes 11?
@@ElizabethStripes-nk8ww shes canonically 43 according to life in the dream house. Which was airing at the time she left him
The one about the wheelchair isn’t true anymore, they made a refurbishment to the newest dream house and the new wheel chair dolls fit in
There's also three more I can think of.
I just played with the dog honestly and ditched the doll :D
There was also a version with a peeing cat with a litterbox.
I hav the pregnant Barbie in the shorter denim dress (w/o freckles) She was pulled from the shelves due to the controversy. She was later released w/ a “gold wedding band” on her left finger along w/ a “Ken” doll cut out in the background sending the msg “she was married”
Mine is mint in the box.
I had the video girl Barbie and a Girl Scout barbie; also, some of the barbie dolls I own used to belong to my mom and my sister
I had the Butterfly art Barbie and I remember the hell noisy neighbors gave me because it was too "raunchy"
If anyone who is black wants to weigh in and add on or correct me, it'd be appreciated.
but the stupid part is that they had a white version, so what was the secret racist message about the white doll? could it it be that the dolls were literally about the fucking oreos printed on their shirts and not some secret racists conspiracy? and they took out a black doll to be more inclusive because most barbies where all white? you cant win
i remember seeing an advertisement of the video barbie and i thought it was so cool. i wanted one so badly.
Omg, I remember the pooping dog! My friend had it and I envied soo badly.. I'd play with it now too tbh, at that time those "pooping"/"peeing" (like the baby born) dolls were such a thing! (I got sentimental, yeah)
I used to own a Bild Lilli I sold her last year. And with the money I purchased a midnight pink skin sidepart american girl Barbie.
I have the sport illustrated doll in box and I love that doll
My Mom talked about how 1 of my sisters had the pregnant Midge doll and how she would find the belly on the floor. We also had the pooper scooper Barbie. I also remember when the Barbie video camera doll came out and seein' it in a plastic case.
Kids definitely don't think racist. They are only taught to be that way.
Most of these dolls I had as a kid and never thought of them as bad or anything. You can tell how sensitive people are now days, not saying it's a bad thing but not saying it's a good thing either lol.
Lmao I used to have the Barbie and Tanner doll. I actually really loved it and thought the pooping dog was funny
I remember buying that pooper scooper doll! I still have her!
Well Done Love🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿Such A Great Video And Very Well Done.
i think the pregnant midge one is so silly. because midge was part of the happy FAMILY line. she had like 2 other children already, how is being pregnant any different?
Im here from the insta live chat ^^ love ya
Thank you!!!! ❤️
I heard about a lot of these controversies and find modt of these silly but you left out the roller blading barbie whose rollerblades shoot sparks that could cause fires and Ken with his cock ring. Also I never thought of barbie as a teen more of a young adult but then again she can be twenty something if you want her to be.
He’s covered the Gay Ken in a stand alone video.... prob why it’s not mentioned here......
I Understand People Complaining About this lists of Dolls, that's why Mattel change her now. So Collectors Don't blame Mattel For What Barbie Become Now, They Change Her To Be More ''Children' Toy with less quality.
I got a barbie dog that gave birth for my birthday a couple of years ago..it’s really weird.
I find most of the scandals about Barbie really funny. Like the Oreo Barbie, omg some people are so triggered by everything.
DollsAndSpooks the term ‘oreo’ is derogatory towards black people though.. the outrage is 100% justified
e.dnaaah but they were just promoting Oreos
Taking notes for the doll line I mentioned in your last vid. XD Just kidding, some of these were inexcusable and/or easily avoidable. However, people/companies make mistakes sometimes, especially in the span of 60 years. And sometimes people get upset for dumb reasons. Barbie in particular can't get a break, even if they're just doing their best to do the right thing.
I know. I feel like brands aimed at young girls are put under a microscope a lot more that any other. Thanks for watching
OMG! My Barbie had that scale! I’d completely forgotten. I did always think that I should weight 110lbs. Now I know where it came from.
i had girl scout barbie. bc barbie was my favorite thing atm and i was in girl scouts. i lost all her clothes and accessories but i still have the doll itself. i didnt even like her clothes as a kid. i just liked that she came with tiny cardboard cookie boxes. definitely not controversial.
Lol... This reminds me of the SNL skit where Mattel decided to introduce an Asian Barbie... there's a lot companies need to consider when marketing a new doll.
oh my god i loved that pooping doggo so much too wtf my childhood
I had the pregnant midge doll when I was a kid, and I still have my video girl doll.
I watched this and then it disappeared !
Alicia Smith me too. I was about to comment something and it was like error and then I refreshed the page and it said that it deleted...
The was a typo in the title in the first upload and he had to fix it and reload hope that explains it
The first time I uploaded the video it was only running with limited adverts because it had been flagged as having inappropriate content so I edited the video and re-uploaded it but unfortunately the same thing happened again. I think RUclips are having issues because most of the staff aren’t working because of coronavirus which is understandable but obviously frustrating because I won’t make any money on this video. Thanks for watching anway
@@BeautyInsideABox I noticed at the beginning of the video you mentioned the Corona virus. The word 'Corona' is currently one of the words you get demonized for saying.
The dream house i bought for my grandaughter in 2018 has an entrance with 2 doors that open wide barbies horse fits ☺️
i was in elementary school when the happy family line came out and all of us kids kind of assumed midge was in her 30s lmao
I have pregnant Midge and the pooping dog. they happen to be a couple of my favorite childhood toys
Love ur channel. Glad to see I can leave a message
1990 , 2000
The unreleased kim k doll was pretty crazy, what was barbie thinking? Lol
I love your RUclips channel this is my first time to time watching a RUclips channel
The happy family with midge - it was pulled off the shelves of walmart because midge didn't have a wedding ring.
