Brett has infectious smile. Should I take the 7 percent solution to give up Holmes-Brett addiction? The way he secretly puts the letter back in box and lights a cigarette non chalantly when Hope finds a letter and that secret infectious smile meant in the end for lady Hilda is priceless. I'll never tell you how much I love you Holmes. We too have our own secrets!!!!
This is certainly one of the best adaptions in this series. Acting, cast, plot, all is amazing. Brett is, naturally, everyone's hero (at least he's mine), but I just realized what a brilliant Lestrade we are given by Jeavons.
Jeremy Brett brings Sir Arthur's Sherlock Holmes to life. No other actor ever achieved this. Jeremy Brett does not imitate Holmes. He is Holmes as described by Sir Arthur! Wonderful! Just wonderful!
+Walter-Jörg Langbein So true. I have read the Sherlock Holmes books, the original newspaper stories, about 10 times and I cannot find anything different between how Jeremy is portraying Holmes in these episodes and the Holmes which is in the stories themselves. I just wasn't able to imagine how someone could possibly be this good before I found these episodes. Jeremy was a genius. No doubt and have studied Holmes character inside and out.
for sure! being a method actor, Jeremy turned all that was Holmes into his bible basically. he actually learned how to smoke a pipe as the cherry on top.
No, Jeremy was simply being himself, as he had the same characteristics of Holmes, who was based on the real life Doctor Joseph Bell, Sir Arthur created two characters out of Dr. bell.
I love the moment when the minister is going through his letters. Just as he pauses seeing the 'missing' letter, Holmes comes into view and lights his cigarette. Classic scene from a very classic actor
This proves to me that Mr. Holmes' heart is not "cold" as Dr. Watson describes of him at times. I love how he is so completely brilliant as to return the letter to his box and cover the whole thing over, all to keep this a happy home. What a romantic deep deep down! :-D Gotta love the complexity of this character. Feels like Sherlock Holmes really lived, doesn't it?
This is my favorite episode. Holmes is so smooth. The "diplomatic secrets" line and the "wha-hey!" at the end are two of the best moments in this whole series.
+LaStriata And the leap of faith of Jeremy Brett! I can't believe crying after watching a Sherlock Holmes episode... Its an amazing production. Perhaps the very best of Brett that I have seen.
Actually I find this episode to be one of the finest in the Brett Holmes collection, and this ending to be the single most exuberant, joyful moment in this series. I love the "patriotic march" variation on the Holmes music, I love the pompous old Victorians, the ice cold actress wife of Trelawny-Hope. And finally I love Hardwicke and Brett. Wonderful actors and men. Thanks for uploading :)
Damn, this show was so good, it´s a timeless masterpiece thaks to the fact that the makers didn´t rely on any trendy, stylish bric-a-brac & special effects, but made it plain, straightforward & as simple as possible. This is a blessing in a time of short-lived trends. The main actors (Brett, Burke, Hardwicke) were excellent, and the guest stars were very good, too. You can still enjoy it today, almost 30 years after it was first released. And I´m sure ppl will be watching it in 100 years, too.
Oh the tender paternalism of "I know it is difficult for you to understand...," then the look she gives SH at 5:04: priceless! This episode is among the very best of an excellent series. Thank you, anish79, for posting it!
This is one of my favorite episodes by far! it shows Holmes as his classic genius hound on the scent victorious, and when he's satisfied his intelligence, he helps a lady in distress. and its so EASY for him! I also LOVE the holmes/lestrade rivalry. Lestrade always tries to outsmart Holmes like a younger brother looking up to his older more wordly brother, but I love that, instead of getting frustrated that Holmes always figures it out first, he admires Holmes even more! wonderful!
I just love that triumphant jump of joy at 3:43, :'-) sure there have been many fine actors to play Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rathbone and others, but for me Jeremy Brett will never be surpassed.
Watched SH as a kid and now at 58 still get a thrill I consider this to being in the top 5 of all stories-all actors-all plots and of course the ending -Wha-Hey
Very very brilliant...I personally revel in these productions and enjoy watching them over and over !!!!!!!! THE VERY BEST OF ENTERTAINMENT AND FULL OF CHRISTIAN LESSONS..
Absolutely fantastic, Jeremy Brett is without doubt the best version of Sherlock Holmes, like for ever, the world's first unofficial consulting detective!!! He nails the role splendidly, bravo !!!
In a way....no one does Holmes better.....Hands down !!!!! Ive seen teh before the after......Mr. Brett is the BEST !!!!! Even the new ones will have to study him to make sure there doing the right thing,,,,,,,,I mean Ive read all the books and in my mind thats him period.........
I was almost jumping to my feet and cheering when I saw the end of this clip. Had to stay composed or else my family would think of me crazy... Nonetheless... Holmes&JB: BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!!!!!
what a wonderful wonderful sherlock holmes! I am still smiling-definitely not so cold hearted after all or at least when it comes down to matters of true love bravo sherlock bravo
Jeremy Brett has made this role so much his own that it is impossible to see him in other productions without believing you are watching Sherlock Holmes. I cannot imagine how his portrayal of this fictional figure could be bettered - and the recent ludicrous film with that Yank playing the role simply goes to prove this point. The above is also true for his sidekick, Dr Watson, played exquisitely by Edward Hardwick..
love this one- among the usual cast of characters I'm a big fan of Harry Andrews and Patricia Hodge who I believe was in "Betrayal" with Jeremy Irons in the 80's - well done by all-
I suspect the PM with his suspicions would have kept an eye on Lady Hilda in the future as not to be trusted. All that has been said about Brett and this series still holds true, classic and timeless. Doyle would have loved these.
It's a variation on the series theme tune - full of Victorian pomp and patriotism :) Written for this programme I think it appears on a CD of music from the series (all by Patrick Gowers I think)
Just as a point of interest, it seems to me that Holmes is something of an anti hero. The way he assumes an attitude to the hierarchy and those in authority. I love these episodes, and think Jeremy Brett is BRILLIANT as SH. Thanks for sharing. But honestly, even though I think Patricia Hobbs is a really talented actor, I truly believe that she was miscast in this role. Thanks again.
Hearing Holmes' line at 2:33 ('because I knew it was nowhere else'), I come to suspect that before he went to play Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp watched and listened to Jeremy Brett. There is a distinctive slur (occasional at first, but progressive over the duration of the series) in Brett's vocal performance that reminds me of Depp's slur when performing as Sparrow. And the body language also shows certain similarities.
@LordHamlet99 In the book he goes as far as to slap Watson on the back in glee when he realises a case can be solved. And in the Hound of the Baskervilles he actually was 'laughing and dancing and wringing [Watson] by the hand'!
Ah - it's even on amazon as an MP3 :) . The piece is called "The Illustrious Lord Bellinger" and is on a collection called "Sherlock Holmes: Original Television Soundtrack" Probs more info than you needed - enjoy :)
@MrsSherlcokHolmes I most certainly agree, Mrs... Well, no hiding your hopes THERE, now, are you? But unless your name is Irene_Addlerrr or something... ;) EPIC jump and "WHA-HEY!" at the end... XD
Jeremy Brett nails it every single time. It is almost unbelievable how good he was.
Sherlock Holmes remained a fictional character until Brett came along.
He is fictional no more. This episode was the jewel in his crown

No, Jeremy was simply being himself, as he had the same characteristics of Holmes, who was based on the real life Doctor Joseph Bell, Sir Arthur created two characters out of Dr. bell.
Jeremy was not a method actor, he was a natural Actor, there is a vast difference, method Actors are cheap imitators.
I love the moment when the minister is going through his letters. Just as he pauses seeing the 'missing' letter, Holmes comes into view and lights his cigarette. Classic scene from a very classic actor
Jeremy Brett always knew exactly where the frame was
I love when Brett leaps in Air and Cheers, he was the best Holmes ever! Missed RIP Jeremy
I was looking for this!
This proves to me that Mr. Holmes' heart is not "cold" as Dr. Watson describes of him at times. I love how he is so completely brilliant as to return the letter to his box and cover the whole thing over, all to keep this a happy home. Jeremy Brett and Sherlock Immortalised by fine acting.. One can watch repeat episodes over the years and still enjoy them
This is my favorite episode. Holmes is so smooth. The "diplomatic secrets" line and the "wha-hey!" at the end are two of the best moments in this whole series.
Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes is brilliant
The music at the end is just tearjerkingly uplifting.
+LaStriata And the leap of faith of Jeremy Brett! I can't believe crying after watching a Sherlock Holmes episode... Its an amazing production. Perhaps the very best of Brett that I have seen.
+LaStriata Tears came to my eyes at the end of this beautuful episode!
+Walter-Jörg Langbein same here.
The music has done justice to the style of Sr Edward Elgar or H. H. Parry.
3:44 I love that happy jump!! lmao! Another excellent adventure! :-D
aaaw, that little jump he made in the end, just made my day :-) Jeremy, you where adorable!
One of THE best! Brett's facial expressions just speak volumes! Fabulous...thank you thank you
If this series had been made now it would have won lots of awards for acting and production/costume design.
My dear Watson, I was bowled over by the acting !

Ah! To see Jeremy Brett Smile is worth a 1000 Buck! Excellent Episode! Thanks for posting!
Oh the tender paternalism of "I know it is difficult for you to understand...," then the look she gives SH at 5:04: priceless! This episode is among the very best of an excellent series. Thank you, anish79, for posting it!
This episode always brings a tear to my eye, like remembering Grandfather, talking about his life... sigh.....
This is one of my favorite episodes by far! it shows Holmes as his classic genius hound on the scent victorious, and when he's satisfied his intelligence, he helps a lady in distress. and its so EASY for him! I also LOVE the holmes/lestrade rivalry. Lestrade always tries to outsmart Holmes like a younger brother looking up to his older more wordly brother, but I love that, instead of getting frustrated that Holmes always figures it out first, he admires Holmes even more! wonderful!
Jeremy Brett, the true and only Sherlock Holmes. Love it, love it!!!
Granada, along with the wonderful people who upload these, has given my summer break a meaning!
I just love that triumphant jump of joy at 3:43, :'-) sure there have been many fine actors to play Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rathbone and others, but for me Jeremy Brett will never be surpassed.
Watched SH as a kid and now at 58 still get a thrill

This is one of the best episodes!
One of the best performances by Brett and an excellent episode - Bravo Brett Bravo!!
I thought the Six Napoleons was his best until I saw this episode.
Truly his crowning glory.
***** There hasn't been another actor, in my opinion, who has portrayed Sherlock Holmes as well as he.
Another brilliant realisation. Thank you for posting this, and particularly for allowing the end title music to run to the end.
I love this episode. "WAHEY!" indeed!
Very very brilliant...I personally revel in these productions and enjoy watching them over and over !!!!!!!! THE VERY BEST OF ENTERTAINMENT AND FULL OF CHRISTIAN LESSONS..
Man i wish he was alive so I'd meet him...he's work and the producers great work are eternal anyway!
I like how Hope says he didn't look through the box as it wasn't necessary, then when the letter is found he said he "checked and checked".
Just Marvelous. . .
Wish they'd make TV like this now. Classy and brilliant.
The late Jeremy Brett, brilliant actor and the perfect Sherlock Holmes. RIP, Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke.
I was almost jumping to my feet and cheering when I saw the end of this clip. Had to stay composed or else my family would think of me crazy...
Nonetheless... Holmes&JB: BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!!!!!
That match strike. Perfection. x)
what a wonderful wonderful sherlock holmes! I am still smiling-definitely not so cold hearted after all or at least when it comes down to matters of true love bravo sherlock bravo
A most unusual story. Loved it.
Did NOT expect that jump for joy.
Simply amazing!! Love him so much! ♡♡
This, the Naval Treaty, and The Hound of the Baskervilles are my favourites.
Jeremy Brett is just great actor......having sharp eyes like Holmes and others everything...also directors and producers did nice work..
No one can replace ur superb acting Brett 👏👏👏
Ah Prime Minister, we too have our diplomatic secrets.
Holmes is too smooth.
Thank you for posting these. The best.
magnificent.......great acting....
Loved it brilliant acting production everything!!!!!!!!!!
This is probably the best one I've seen so far.
Oh! Extraordinary performance.I do love you Jeremy for your acting being a student of the English literature.Z.A.K.
Jeremy Brett has made this role so much his own that it is impossible to see him in other productions without believing you are watching Sherlock Holmes. my favorite episode! outstanding acting from everyone!
I miss seeing Jeremy Brett. He was the best Sherlock Holmes!
love this one- among the usual cast of characters I'm a big fan of Harry Andrews and Patricia Hodge who I believe was in "Betrayal" with Jeremy Irons in the 80's -
well done by all-
Brilliant.Wonderful acting by Jeremy Brett.Great performance.
A mind like a steal trap and a heart too..
Holmes is an advocate of love....
Splendid bust collection in that house! Love it
One of my favorite episodes!!
I suspect the PM with his suspicions would have kept an eye on Lady Hilda in the future as not to be trusted. All that has been said about Brett and this series still holds true, classic and timeless. Doyle would have loved these.
Music for the series composed by William Patrick Gowers (5 May 1936 - 30 December 2014)
My 3. fav episode. Love it when he jumps in the end!! :DDD
Didn't expect the jump of joy lol WHA-HEY!!!!!!!!¡¡¡¡¡!!!!!!!!
Ahh his slight lip puckering is classic!
This was a delightful episode....
I wonder if they had an air bag for Jeremy Brett to land. That jump looks risky.
I never thought about that but yeah!
The expression on Jeremey at 2:55 to 3:00 is touche!
I love this series. Jeremy and Edward make it perfect,
It's a variation on the series theme tune - full of Victorian pomp and patriotism :) Written for this programme
I think it appears on a CD of music from the series (all by Patrick Gowers I think)
Patricia Hodge
Excellent my Dear Watson!
I have to admit, I like this version of the Sherlock Holmes's character!
Sherlock Holmes - keeper of state and marital secrets, LOL.
Excellenting casting of Harry Andrews.
Very fun! I enjoyed it immensely.
And back to Baker St. to indulge in some 8% solution and blast some more holes in the wall.
We TOO have our diplomatic secrets !
Indeed. Great episode and ending.
Hearing Holmes' line at 2:33 ('because I knew it was nowhere else'), I come to suspect that before he went to play Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp watched and listened to Jeremy Brett. Nice to see the great Harry Andrews. Must have been one of his very last performances.
Splendid! Hoorah!
Well Done Again! Three Cheers.
Loved it!!
Very very classy solution in solving this one!!......R.I.P Jeremy Brett
Great movie!
@LordHamlet99 In the book he goes as far as to slap Watson on the back in glee when he realises a case can be solved. And in the Hound of the Baskervilles he actually was 'laughing and dancing and wringing [Watson] by the hand'!
And another feather in LeStrade's cap!
Better than the book!
Ah - it's even on amazon as an MP3 :) . The piece is called "The Illustrious Lord Bellinger" and is on a collection called "Sherlock Holmes: Original Television Soundtrack"
Probs more info than you needed - enjoy :)
Wohhheyy!! 🙆♂
I was wondering what piece that's played at the end. Is it an actual piece and or variation of one? What would be the Title?
@Setigr Johnny Depp was imitating Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones, which is why KR is so good-sported as to play his dad in the third movie.
Only one word for it or two as Holmes may have commented himself: "excellent" or "pure genius".
2:59 He's so pretty I think I'm going to cry. TwT
My favorite part :D
@MrsSherlcokHolmes I most certainly agree, Mrs...
Well, no hiding your hopes THERE, now, are you?
But unless your name is Irene_Addlerrr or something... ;)
EPIC jump and "WHA-HEY!" at the end... XD
I instantly recognised the voice of General Woundwort :)
+LaStriata Ah...I hadn't....good catch :)
+LaStriata
Oh I say well done. Well done indeed!
Capital!
Best kept secret yet
