Money story: I am a man of means. I never talk about my finances on public, but my ex loved to show off. She would mention it to her friend whenever she could. Then her friend would get pissy if I never offered to pay the restaurant bill. Straight up, I told them I would only pay for my ex and me, and that's it. The night before we broke up, she was demanding I pay the whole bill for a group of 8 of her college friends. I flatly refused. In front of everyone, she called me cheap, so I walked to the cashier, paid for my portion of the meal only, and walked out without saying a word. Apparently, took her 20 minutes to realize I didn't pay her portion, and had to ask her friends to pay for her, as she didn't have any money on her.
Next day, she berated me over the phone for what I did, and that if I didn't share my wealth with her, what good was I to her. That was enough for me to break up with her.
We were only dating for a short time, so I didn't waste too much money on her. Lesson learned before it was too late.

Had similar to the last story happen 7ish years ago. Go to leave for something on a Friday evening and there's some POS shytebox sitting in my driveway. Knock on neighboring homes asking if anyone knows who owns this car blocking me in and nobody knows so head back to the house, call the towing company that handles the neighborhood and sent the trespasser on it's way to the impound. Would seem there was a bit of a get-together at the apartments across the creek and apparently parking issues the guy holding the party told these guys to drive over to our complex and walk across the dam to get to the party and apparently for whatever reason my house looked empty to them.

You gotta love new management. They don't take the time to learn how things work. Then proceed to alienate the ones that make things work. Then they are clueless as to why things don't work any more. Often times it turns out they're not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Happened to me once. Worked in a Major D1 Athletic Department, Facilities had been in house for many years. My former Bosses knew well to leave me alone as they knew I’d do a good job, I had a system down. If there was something that need attention but wasn’t earth shattering, I left my Bosses alone if they had something major going on @ their end.
Then we were placed under Campus Facilities & Grounds who wanted to micromanage everything, couldn’t go into another’s area (had to explain once why I was replacing hand towels when they’d run out in the Training Room -requested by the Training Room, during mandatory Drug Testing), had to clock in & out, etc…. Not only that, but my immediate supervisor was Pi*sed when my power was restored in 24 hours & his was out for four days after an EF4 tornado. Put up w/it for a little over a year when I had to enter the local hospital for 10 days. During recovery, I said ‘F’ it, & not long afterwards retired on Disability (bum hip (later replaced) & bum knees.

I thought the other way. Maybe she gets some kind of sympathy kick out of having everyone think she's poor. "Oh, dear, poor OP's wife can't afford anything. Her husband's no good." Then they feel sorry for her and look down at her husband. I think it's some kind of a power play on her part. He did the right thing stopping that.

@@awade9638 I don't think the hubby has an ego problem. The wife is lying to their friends and family. A counselor once told me "Feeling aren't right or wrong- they just are." And the husband feels he's being publicly humiliated every time she does this.
As to the new car, she could just tell the truth. "We could afford new cars, but why spend the money before these break down for good? Plus, I don't drive much, so I don't spend much time in the car." No, she has to deliberately make it look like the husband can't support them. (Yes, she works too, but the stereotype/expectation is that the husband is the provider.)
People want to borrow money? You can say no. If you choose to do so, have them sign a promissory note, with a fixed term (and interest, if any) and have it notarized. That will dissuade a lot of people.

That wife needs to see a psychiatrist because apparently she likes to have people pity her and that's unhealthy. Tell your wife that you don't need to keep telling people about your finances at all or you don't need to say anything at all. My family has a lot of money but it's all an asset that's not liquid cash it's a different thing. But I'm not telling people to get attention, I always think of myself as being poor and trying to make money for retirement.

LMAO! I was a AMS in the Navy as well, (before AMS and AMH became a combined rate of AM). The Navy is super anal about paperwork. When I was airframe supervisor at night and CDI, (collateral duty inspector) I had one of my guys working screw gripes. There are a lot of fasteners on an airplane so some are always broken, stripped, missing, etc. We had a guy in the electrical shop who notoriously couldn't or wouldn't spell "stripped" with 2 "p"s so it was always "striped" screws on the VIDS MAF. So while I was closing out those screw gripes, I ran across one that said "striped", so I wrote "Replaced striped screw with one of solid color, IAW MIMs". Well, maintenance control did NOT have a sense of humor as I learned the next day. I didn't get in trouble but they sent me to VIDS board verification school, which was the most boring class I've ever been in to show me the importance of accurate paperwork. IT was accurate. I looked at the screw itself and it was of solid color!

14 years ago I finished a job, and they'd finished with me (a story for another time) with the UK civil service at one of the US Air Force bases here. No end of system and individual screw ups. One of the worst / funniest was actually by a guy, a MSgt, who was usually a pretty decent guy but he'd sat on a particular request for certain parts. He gave me less than 48 hours notice for the special (security lock related) items and said I'd be written up if I didn't get it sorted.
Fortunately I got on with the contracts dept (Defence Estates for anyone who happens to know the set up) and they had given me a copy of the contract email from almost two weeks prior, so:
      "Get these items"
"Not possible as they need shipping from the US or Germany"
"You'll be written up if the items aren't here on Friday"
      Me takes out memo, "Really!?"
      Beautiful silence 😁

We knew my aunt was always thoughtful about what they spent. Before paying several hundred dollars for something, they would wait a day or two, discuss it before deciding to buy it or not. Came to find out when her husband had to go into a nursing home that they had a little over 4 million. Until they had to divide their assets, she wasn't entirely sure how much money they had. This was after selling the trees and land they had been growing them on for 50 years and dispersing a lot of that money to her 4 children. Can't exactly fathom how much money they had before that.

That last story reminds me of one of the few serious fights my Lady Wife and I have had in 30+ years. (You can count them on the fingers of one hand.)
When we were shopping for wedding bands, the first jeweler showed us some rings that we could have afforded- if we were stupid with our money. My wife said "That's out of our price range, we can't afford those." I. was. pissed. I felt so humiliated. I was going to be like "Those are gorgeous. But, we've got a wedding and a honeymoon coming up. So we're looking for something less expensive for now, and we'll probably upgrade in the future."
I still can't believe we had that argument on a bench in the middle of a busy mall. After we hashed it out, We ended up going to another jeweler in the mall and starting over. Long time ago, but I think we looked at one of the more expensive sets, and I said to my wife "We can go that much, if you really want to." She of course said "I don't want to spend that much money right now." Problem solved.

Aircraft paint story: Been there, done that, got the DD-214 to prove it. I was an electrician on a small frigate (think destroyer only much smaller) back in the 1970's. Most of the chiefs were pretty good, but yeah, there's always that one. He self-corrected himself to no longer being a problem. Got drunk and struck an officer. Didn't go well for him.
HOA vs garden story: OP, if you don't belong to the HOA, I'd tell them to go shovel out a large lake with a pitchfork. If you do belong to the HOA, you may need to get a legal opinion. I'd consider planting things in the ground.
I'm poor story: It's generally considered bad manners to discuss finances. Doing so in such a way as to make your spouse look like he isn't providing for the family though, is a pretty shitty move. She wants to play a game with friends and family at your expense, you've simply come up with a counter-measure. Maybe she'll learn to stop.
Driveway parking story: I've never been able to understand these people who feel entitled to park in other people's driveways (or on other's property) without permission of the owner.

The couple with money? Their mistake is talking about money at all. She could have phrased things better so as to not make him look bad, but of the two, she was the wiser. It’s nobody’s business as to how settled you are financially. Keeping people thinking you aren’t well off keeps them from hitting you up for help. He on the other hand due to ego and appearances has exposed them to that which she was avoiding.

The house I lived in for over twenty years had private parking across the road and it was very close to a church. Over the years there were a number of priests none of whom advised wedding and other parties that there was very limited parking in the vicinity (it was in a village on the side of a hill and developed over the centuries before cars were invented. My house was built in the late 18th century).

If a system works and has been working without any problems, then you keep your mits off of it. If changes need to be made, then you gather all of those who do the work, make the proposal, and listen to their input. And only if they think the changes will work or are practical do you make the changes.
You never ever attach a fence to a neighbor's fence without their permission. If they give permission, then you make it so if repairs have to be made, both fences can be easily separated.

No, she's not downplaying. She's flat out lying to make it look like they're flat broke. She even told her friends that she wants a new car (lie) but that they can't afford one (lie.) How about "That new car of yours is gorgeous. We're going to run the wheels off our old ones before we upgrade."

It's yet ANOTHER fake headline. Every one has "HOA" in the headline... or so it seems!

Maybe she doesn't want her friends and family to ask yall if they can borrow money from you .

If she can lie and say they're flat broke, she could just as easily lie to give the impression that they're solidly middle class, but no rolling in money. Instead of telling two lies (that she wants a new car, and that they can't afford one) she could say something like "I'd love a new car, but when I look at the sticker price I like my old car just fine. That money does better in the bank."

I can relate to the guy whose wife is always "broke". I have the exact same problem.

in the always broke story I know exactly where the husband is coming from about his wife always saying we are broke I myself would have told my wife WE ARE NOT BROKE STOP TELLING EVERYONE THAT OR I WILL TELL THEM AND SHOW THEM OUR BANK RECORDS the one thing about finances is they are a touchy subject for a lot of people but at the same time if you have money in the bank that you DO NOT have to touch and you can add to the amount and every month you have money in accounts for your kids college and you don't have to worry about whether or not your bills are going to be paid every month or put food on the table and after all of the monthly expenses are paid and you have money left to put towards investments or college funds or towards your emergency fund then you are NOT BROKE you may NOT be a millionaire but you are NOT BROKE by any means
