That same sexist car salesman attitude is still around. About 5 years ago I (50 yo woman) went to a dealership looking for a specific car. I’d done my research and it was down between a specific Ford or Honda model. I went to the Ford dealership walked around forever and none of the salespeople would approach me. I just left and went down the road to the Honda dealership. I was approached right away, they were very kind and answered any questions. Within 20 minutes I bought the car and paid cash for it. While I was waiting for it to be detailed I went back to Ford, went in and walked into the GM’s office. I told him about my experience there and showed him the paperwork for my new Honda. I also pointed out that I paid cash for the car. Quite a profit for the salesman who did about a half an hours worth of work!

I am sorry for the fact you had to live through this but I have had the wonderful experience of doing something similar, I still smile when I think of it , difference is that I didn’t have to finance a single penny. The dealership went broke a few months later and I bought it for next to nothing, I sold it to the employees 2 years later and it is still going some 40 years later .

I had the same problem when I wanted to purchase my first new vehicle. I had my financing, knew exactly what I wanted, and the salesman only wanted to talk to my BF (later, husband.) I left that dealership quickly and went to another. My new salesman was the best and he factory ordered everything I wanted and nothing I didn't. We have since purchased several vehicles from Russ, and he is still the best 25 years later.

@@rexochroy2 happened to me twice. first time was when I was buying a house. realtor completely ignored me other than when he mentioned black bears and how big they are. guess he thought he was being funny and tried scarring the city girl. Guess I should have told him that, the city girl was the one with the money for the house., and oops he just lost a sale.
another time was buying a car where the salesman must have been dropped off in the state 5 minutes before we walked in and wasn't aware we have almost as many car dealerships as we have pizza places. After 15 or so minutes of him talking to hubby and ignore me he finally asked me what type of car I wanted. if only he had actually paid attention to the 2 words I told hubby while he was standing 2 feet away from us, or had paid attention to the car I was looking at, he'd have gotten the answer. then again, had he done that hubby and I wouldn't have been able to see the look on his face when I told him, "anything but a ford" and then we went elsewhere and I bought the red mustang I wanted, and then hubby took it to work the following day cause he just had to show his new toy to all his co-workers lol

Lady of the house here. My ex and I were at a dealership buying a car once when he was unemployed because the company he worked at for 19 yrs had just closed their TN plant. The salesman was saying you have to work with me here. I said no, it`s my income financing this sale. It`s on my terms or not at all.
    Salesman caved.

I am very aware of sexist salespeople. When I (45 yr F) purchased my home years ago I went to the home improvement store to purchase a riding lawn mower, a storage building & carpet runner to protect my carpet. I had already selected the mower & building & had the tickets for the purchase & was then looking at the carpet protector. A salesman came up & pushed me aside to sell 3 foot of runner to a man who had walked up after I had started looking at the different kinds of runner. No excuse me, no I will be right with you. Nothing!! I walked to the customer service desk & threw the tickets along with the company credit card on the desk & told them they had just lost the cash sale of about $13,000 & my loyalty. I went about 2 miles away & purchased those items at another home improvement store.

The OP has more than enough evidence to show that the car was given as a gift, if the matter ever went to court. I'm not sure of the exact legal situation in the USA, but I'd guess that any fair and reasonable court would simply order the ownership title to be transferred on the basis of the evidence.
In fact, if I were OP I might even start a court case myself, and sue to obtain full title on the basis of the evidence that it was a gift (the father saying about expecting repayment that "I do now" is actually evidence in OP's favour, not against), and that OP has been paying for registration, consumables such as fuel and for servicing and repairs, all adds up to OP being the actual owner, not the father. Also ask for costs against the father since he's obviously acted in bad faith.

The last story: I had a friend who sent a Certified, signature required letter to her father.
    Stating that he will complain:
Why he wasn't invited to her wedding
Why he isn't going to see what will likely be his first grandchild.
and a few more things that I forget (sorry this was in 1976 or so!)
"End of the digestive tract" starting calling her, both at her dorm and her work, her dorm RA, and her friends.... trying to reestablish the relationship on HIS Terms!! Most of us already knew of her plans and those who didn't were rapidly brought up to speed!
Funny thing she was only hanging out with friends and causally dating!!! (Nothing serious, so No Wedding/No Baby planned much less "started".) She just wanted to see if he had realized what he had done was wrong (he hadn't) and would try and make amends (he didn't) He died without every seeing his daughter again, not even talking on the phone again.... Sad, but I knew her since Jr. High (now called Middle School) and that Son Of A "Witch" deserved it!!!!!!!!!

First Story: Used care dealerships are still horrible. I was car hunting early 2000s. I was not married, but I brought my significant other with me while shopping. It was going to be in my name only, I already had financing from my bank, and needed the car sooner than later. I went to multiple dealerships. Many talked down to me, only talked to my boyfriend, and just flat out acted like they didn't want to sell me a car. Made no sense at all for people that work on commission. I finally found a car after months of looking. It was still a drawn out all day event at the dealership in the next city over while they dragged it out to wear me down on price, but at that point it was just nice to be able to buy a flipping car. It's like some of these salesmen still were confused by the fact women could drive cars and own personal property.

Around 1972, my mother went straight from work as a Flight Instructor (jumpsuit and short hair) to a dealership to look at a car she wanted. They’d barely speak to her. She went home and changed to an expensive looking dress, styled wig, and some makeup. Same dealership fell all over themselves trying to sell to her. No sale.

Last story: if you’re gonna fight for the car, contact the police and/or sheriff's dept in your dad's jurisdiction and advise them. That way they don't treat it as a stolen vehicle when it's really a civil matter. This will keep them from being aggressive with you if they happen upon your car while out and about. Quite honestly though, I'd just give him the car and never talk to or see him again. I especially like the idea of parking it somewhere shitty with the keys in it. Take a photo of it when you leave it (legally parked mind you) and just text him where to find it with the photo.

Men don't spend money on other men's kids. Unless the wife is pushing it. I suspect the real villian here isn't the Father. It is the step mom. The whole "OP has to give up her room when other family are visiting but not her kids" pretty much indicates who is making the decisions here.

In the early 70s my sister, Dad and I went to check out a car at a dealership, same thing happened there, dude just wanted to talk to Dad. Dad stopped him midsentence, bub if you want to make a sale today, talk to the person buying it. He did, but when she wanted something extra, he tried charging her more, a lot more, he had to talk to the manager to get it any lower. In comes the owner of the dealership, greets Dad warmly, and looks over the paper work for the car deal. Dad explained my sister has too learn the ropes, the owner sat down with her and explained the paperwork to her, and pointed out some discrepancies. Then the salesman came back all smug, until he saw the owners face, who said nothing, just walked away. She got the car, at a much better price than what he was trying to get, after she pointed out the discrepancies to him, and he knew he was cooked. I went to the same dealership a few years later to look at used cars, ran into the owner, he said the salesman was investigated internally, and it was found he'd cheated many folks, and pocketed the extra.

The first story reminds me of when my mom was shopping for a new vehicle just a few years ago and my dad was along for the ride just for the sake of seeing if his 6'4 315 pound frame would fit in the seat if he had to drive it for any reason. During the sales talj, the guy would try directing questions to my dad onstead of my mom. Apparently his mindset was stuck in the pre 1970's era where women couldn't even have a banking account without a man signing off on it.

Last story-If he calls the cops or does take it to court find a friend who is or knows a mechanic and the car will be a worthless piece of junk in a few hours or less or, part out the car-sell pieces of it, and you might make more than the car is worth then have what's left delivered to dad.

Car sales story: Unfortunately, not too much has changed in that regard. If that happened today with the same "ask questions" sign, I'd leave them an absolutely scathing review everywhere I could think of to do so. You did well by walking away OP, only you should have done it sooner.
Drop everything story: You'd think some of these idiots would take a moment to think after being asked to "put it in writing", but they never seem to learn.
Suits story: Agreed. Be nice people. I shop at certain stores on a regular basis and while I may not know where everything is (especially since they move items on a regular basis) I have a good general understanding of where things are and if someone asks I can usually help out... if they're polite. Be rude and you won't like the response.
Give back car story: OP, essentially you're screwed if the title to the car is in your father's name. I seriously doubt the text(s) would hold up in court over the title. I wouldn't want to bet on that anyway.

    • @melkiorwiseman5234
      @melkiorwiseman5234 3 месяца назад

The text where the father says that he "does now" expect payment is actually fairly solid evidence that he wasn't expecting payment before, which strongly implies that it was a gift, which he doesn't really have the right to reverse.
Of course the courts in the USA are weird and stupid, but if it did become a case then OP needs to get all receipts for all of the servicing ever done on the vehicle and argue that if the father wants the car back, then he has to pay OP back the full costs for maintaining the vehicle before he can get it back.

    • @melkiorwiseman5234
      @melkiorwiseman5234 3 месяца назад +1

In strict legal terms, it may be his, but I'd think that any reasonable court would look at the evidence and see that it had been given as a gift (the text message about him now expecting payment is actually evidence that he'd given it as a gift originally, which is incompatible with changing your mind later on and wanting payment) and that OP has been paying for all consumables and maintenance of the vehicle. With that evidence, I'd hope that the court would order the title to be transferred to the OP on the basis that despite the title, the father has no reasonable legal claim on the vehicle.
Either that, or rule that the father must pay OP back for the full costs of all maintenance done on the vehicle since it was given to OP, before the vehicle is returned.

The Sexist car salesman trope, of always talking to the man and not the woman, is a throwback to the old days when the men were in almost total control of a families finances. The husband buying everything, except groceries, for the home and the woman was in control of running the home( and buying the groceries). That hasn't really been a thing in the West since the 60's and now women usually have the majority buying power in a traditional family

If he really wants the car back.
Drive through several speed cameras, red lights and then give him the car back.
When he gets the fines he will be fucked.

If it's his name on the paperwork then cops are going to side with him. "I loaned my car but but he is refusing to give it back." Then a messy court fight which OP can't afford.

To the last story about the car: Should've gotten the title in your name asap after he presented it to you. Unfortunately, in the present case you probably don't have a leg to stand on. Go buy a several-hundred-dollar p.o.s., and get out from under that egomaniacal tyrant, and go your own way. There's no love between you, except from your end, it seems, and you'll end-up better-off if you cut ties. It's a shame that things are what they are, but it's YOUR life, and he's demonstrated that he doesn't deserve a place in it. Go strong, gal, you'll be happier for it.

You can't get a pos for several hundred dollars. You need to pay over 1k now.

@MsAngelique You're not looking in the right places, then. DON'T cruise the car lots, and don't expect any kind of warranty. I always found mine from "a buddy of a friend of mine." I always found the neatest old cars that way. Caddies, mostly. Got the 2nd best car I've ever had that way, a '73 Sedan de Ville, with the big ol' V-8. Mileage sucked, but WHAT A CAR! $550.00.
Got 5 years out of the old gal, until the tyranny quit, and I was living atop a mountain at the time, making a 10 mile trek up AND down, at least twice daily, and this was the mid-to-late '90s, through the turn of the Century, and beyond.

That's actually not entirely true. A title is evidence of ownership, not proof of ownership. If there is another verbal contract, which is has evidence of, that is at least enough evidence of intent to be taken to court. It might be an uphill battle, but it will be expensive for the father to defend as well. Now, does a poor college student have the resources to fight that? No.
