I absolutely loved it when I found you could slam the brakes when dudes where behind you. Then they went flying over your car and you crush them. 100% radical.
When I was about 7 years old, I tried to rent this from Blockbuster, but my parents wouldn't let me. For good reason too, not exactly a game for kiddos haha. Anyway, I forgot what it was called over the years, but the box art and the blurbs on the back were burnt into my memory. 22 years later I happened to see a boxed copy on eBay and couldn't believe my luck. Worth the wait? Idk, but it's too cool to be able to go back in time like that. The driving sequences are badass but the beat em up sections could have used more refinement. Also, Idk who needs to hear this, but you CAN reverse your car, it's DOWN on the D-pad. Don't press anything else, just hold down. Also to use nitro if you've picked it up, hit A+B+C. Kinda have to spam it to get it to work and there's not much notification that it's activated.
Even in a post apocalyptic world where everyone's shooting each other, there are turn signs on the road. Because safety first. Safety first then teamwork.
the number one underrated game of all time, I got this game at a flea market knowing nothing about it (if my memory doesn't deceive me), never seen it a magazine or anything, got it home and was very pleased !
i cant believe you reviewed this game you are a legend my favourite mega drive driving game right here. oh and yeah this was meant to be a mad max game but they lost the rights to it
for a start, its pretty amazing for a megadrive game, I say its pretty much taking the console to its limits. I'd like to see you program a first person driving game with shooting AND a side scrolling beatemup in 1 game using only 64k of RAM, 512 colours and a 7.67mhz processor. Why are you comparing a modern game to this? its called CLASSIC game room for a reason :P
The game was originally developed as a sequel to the first Mindscape game in the Mad Max universe - Mad Max (1990 video game). When Mindscape failed to secure the license's renewal, the title was changed to "Outlander", and specific references to Mad Max were dropped.
Ominou5 - The ST game you are thinking off was overlander, great game - was also released on Amiga and various 8-bit machines like the Spectrum and Amstrad too! Cool reviews as always - nice one!
How could you say that? After I saw this review I bought a copy of it myself, and played it, and it's freaking awesome! Don't judge a game until you've played it!

thanks for reviewing this, not sure how you will feel about the next game i sent in though. its like a megadrive deus ex...kinda its nice hearing what other people think about things, and now hopefully more people are aware of this game. even if it isnt the best thing ever, it is still a pretty decent game. and if anyone is wondering...yes there is an end to the game, you just have to drive there and there is a boss fight
I played the heck out of this back in the day. We had it as a preview cart when I was working for Sega and we were hoping that it was work in progress... sadly... it was the finished product. Some nice moments though.
The first thing I thought when I saw the gameplay and heard the music was Road Rash. Road Rash was developed by EA and released in 1991. This was made by Mindscape in 1992. Perhaps it was developed by staff that left EA?
I LOVE this game, you can get Geiger counters, upgrade the engine n get the blower from the movie lol, you can even get little toys to hang from the rear view mirror, which the bikers reach in with their fingerless gloved hand and steal from you. Play it some more if you get a chance, it' gets better as it goes on.
Hey Mark, did you hear that they are making a new Mad Max movie?! With the same director and everything! Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Mel Gibson is interested in it, so they might re-cast the role.
the graphics and driving part is a lot of fun... the on foot stuff... not so much. It's a cool concept though... and weirdly enough, I did a review of this game on my channel just a couple weeks ago.
When I was little, I played test drive on the Commodore 64. This game would have been amazing after playing test drive. If you wanna see jerky, check that game out lol. Test drive WAS amazing at the time, though. At least to me.
Prior to Outlander, Mindscape released Mad Max for the nes. Outlander is way better, but because since it wasn't called MadMax 2, sales were very limited.
Eh. Probably only because nobody can be bothered stealing the signs. I mean, if everything went to hell tomorrow, would it surprise you to see a road sign still standing if the road itself is also still good enough to drive on?
A Hummer would stand up to those mutant thugs which is good because you won't be able to get anywhere in a Hummer, so you want to have heavy armor to protect you.
This game has gotten kind of fashionable lately but I always found it kind of tedious. Terminator 2: Judgement Day is sort of similar and unpolished but a little more fun when you get to grips with it.
Actually, its funny that the steering wheel is on the right hand side,I guess it was intended as a Mad Max game. I'm not going to say Road Warrior, its not called that and never was.
I can only respect your opinion and say that, being a man who also still has his Atari, his Nintendo, his Master System, his SNES and his Genesis, I must say, again, that you got to be kidding if you want to compare this to an 8 bit game. Seriously. Anyway, the processor also had to deal with all those bikes and trucks, the fuel meter, oil meter, ammo limit, etc... the processor is working hard here.
This game is pretty darn bad. But you must admit the graphics were pretty incedible for the Genesis, especially without a 32X. It has a nice cockpit, the steering wheel moves WITH a hand on it, and even the gauges work! Plus all the things going on around you, with the window shots? That's a shit load going on there, and it's still pretty smooth. Love the Genesis :)
i can see why this game never got released in germany XD too bad cuz that game really seem to be excellent! Shooting other drivers on the road? That's what i could never do in "The Duell - Test Drive 2" :P
I absolutely loved it when I found you could slam the brakes when dudes where behind you. Then they went flying over your car and you crush them. 100% radical.
Thanks for the tip , lol.
I'm totally impressed by the graphics and the concept of the game, dang 1992 was a good year.
still in my top ten of all time

i allways thought this game was MAD MAX:THE GAME
took me a while to find it
The game was originally developed as a sequel to the first Mindscape game in the Mad Max universe - Mad Max (1990 video game). When Mindscape failed to secure the license's renewal, the title was changed to "Outlander", and specific references to Mad Max were dropped.
Bought on ebay not long after watching this review. :D Looks so awesome!
This game has pretty good computing power built in. It can render the front, the mirror, and the window shooting aspects at the same time.
More Genesis reviews! The best game console of all time!
Ominou5 - The ST game you are thinking off was overlander, great game - was also released on Amiga and various 8-bit machines like the Spectrum and Amstrad too!
Cool reviews as always - nice one!
This one was very cool,I remember playing it like 16 years ago, very underrated as well as another title Technocop
How could you say that? After I saw this review I bought a copy of it myself, and played it, and it's freaking awesome! Don't judge a game until you've played it!

Love that music. And this game definitely needs a remake! Give it to Bethesda and let them go Fallout 3 with it.
Mark... so cool, he keeps his store tabs on his Genesis cases!
Did you ever do a CGR review over Dune for genesis?
Please do one! That game is so sweet.
A modern remake of this would be awesome
Agreed. What could it be similar to? Farcry?
why is the steering wheel on the wrong side?
This looks great for a 2021 play through. It reminds me of bayou Billy (NES) which I found very hard! Also a great game.
Wow that's the best car interior design I ever seen on a sega Genesis platform
thanks for reviewing this, not sure how you will feel about the next game i sent in though. its like a megadrive deus ex...kinda

Good to see you took my advise and reviewed a real Mad Max type game ...OUTLANDER!!!!
"We couldn't get the Mad Max license? Okay, make the game anyway. The Gyro Captain is now an enemy."
I think the music rocks especially in the driving scenes!
I played the heck out of this back in the day. We had it as a preview cart when I was working for Sega and we were hoping that it was work in progress... sadly... it was the finished product. Some nice moments though.
This game needed a Wilhelm scream every now and then.
Yea it did
Good God, the SNES version isn't bad! Both versions are great and are different in their own ways.
If I am not mistaken it was supposed to be titled Mad Max but they couldn't get the rights to the name.
How is the Neo Geo coming?
I remember this game so well, hasn't aged very well unfortunately
Wow I'm buying this game. Thanks Mark for the review

I like the combination of driving with the shotgun shooting.
Nice! You have the same hair style my dad had back in 1992.
Yeah he was 20 years out of date, 20 years ago. I think he still has that blow-dried mullet.
i wonder how that would turn out, if done right itd be pretty cool
Love the new intro tune
How could you say that? This game is so awesome! And I didn't even know it existed until I saw this review!

So Thor likes to watch Classic Game room? A legendary viking must be really fond of this good channel.

you should review snes one because its different (3rd person chase cam)
you mean the right side?
This was one of my favorites on SNES back then.
is this for snes?
Mad Max films were Australian, the have the steering wheel on the right side of the cockpit. I guess it's a homage to the movies.
Can you do wwf the arcade game
You missed the gigar counter in the 1st town...
Maybe because it was developed in the UK?
When I was little, I played test drive on the Commodore 64. This game would have been amazing after playing test drive. If you wanna see jerky, check that game out lol. Test drive WAS amazing at the time, though. At least to me.
Vision is a huge CGR fan. He plays video games in his sleep mode.
one of only a few SEGA Gen games that programmed scaling right.
oh no what happened to the intro music
I noticed the same thing.. actually at first when I saw the thumbnail I thought it was a review for the bus driver game but then saw the title
Love You CGR
Prior to Outlander, Mindscape released Mad Max for the nes. Outlander is way better, but because since it wasn't called MadMax 2, sales were very limited.
These grafics in the driving is pretty damn good.
Cool I did not know this existed on the Genesis.
Btw, the super spy CAN shot upward in Rolling Thunder 3. ;)
I just noticed the frame rate is bad because it’s scaling all the things.
Can you make a video about Mechwarrior?
I found the music in the first level a bit annoying.
Also check out Technocop. Very similar to this game.
Mark, just saying, it's a gyroplane or gyrocopter not a helicopter. Or in my own words the Sharkcopter Doomatron 5800
Review Rad Gravity for the NES, please? He has a ridiculously giant square jaw AND pink armor, eh? eh?
Play Rolling Thunder 3! You can finally shoot upwards...well up and to the right / left :)
Maintain right
erm one question, where are the Mark's salary come from?
A shaggy dog? If you're trying to reference Mad Max, get it right. He had an Australian Cattle Dog, which has a SHORT coat. Very smart breed of dog.
Yes I totally agree.
can't imagine if they called this game Mad Max with movie tie in's and all, could have changed the stigma of "movie to videogame" way back in 92'...
Eh. Probably only because nobody can be bothered stealing the signs. I mean, if everything went to hell tomorrow, would it surprise you to see a road sign still standing if the road itself is also still good enough to drive on?
loved this game as a kid, i used to play it and lie to my friends that they controlled the bad guys so i could play it by myself mwa haha
Same here, looking for that exact game! :O
It was was a mad Max game, butt the movie license got pulled at some point and they called it outlander😎
Outlander? HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!
One of the best Genesis games and played the fuck out of it.
Actually, its funny that the steering wheel is on the right hand side,I guess it was intended as a Mad Max game. I'm not going to say Road Warrior, its not called that and never was.
This game needs a remake!
Mark, you and Stella need to be Mad Max and Dog for Halloween :)
If you drove a Prius like this, it wouldn't have any better fuel economy anyway!
looks exactly like the penn and teller bus driver game.... probably the same engine?
I can only respect your opinion and say that, being a man who also still has his Atari, his Nintendo, his Master System, his SNES and his Genesis, I must say, again, that you got to be kidding if you want to compare this to an 8 bit game. Seriously. Anyway, the processor also had to deal with all those bikes and trucks, the fuel meter, oil meter, ammo limit, etc... the processor is working hard here.
and mech warrior 2!
it kinda reminds me of rage what with the mish mash of driving and on-foot in a post-apoc setting
This game looks awesome, I want it
i remember this... i loved it, his would make a good remake
Finished trolling yet?!
This game is pretty darn bad. But you must admit the graphics were pretty incedible for the Genesis, especially without a 32X.

I thought it was going to be a cross between "Outland" and "Highlander" featuring the voice of Sean Connery.
YES!!
Please do the Transformers review!!!
I wanna play this game
Yes!
Love how the health says max
