Horus: "He may turn on you."
Emperor: "He will not."
I enjoy these while snacking on my corpse starch wafers.
It’s interesting that the Rout became more internally disciplined, but outwardly stayed the same whereas the 9th changed so dramatically in their outward appearance, but internally still harbor traits of their early legion records.
I’ll be the first to deride the wolves for their... obsessions, but I’ve never seen a finer power axe than those clutched in the fists of the Vylka Fenryka. Beautiful... beautiful weapons...
Big E: "...how shall I persuade my boy to rally Fenrisians and crusade among the stars...I got an idea." Big E unfolds a chart. "Russ, have a look at this chart will ya? That's an Ork. Wanna fight some of them? "
I always loved the evolution of the Space Wolves, from near mindless slaughterers and berserker in the 30th, to seemingly selfless heroes who were undyingly loyal to the Imperium and those they fought alongside.
Except to all their brothers they slaughtered not to mention the inquisition lmao
@@aloaloings5596 fuck the Inquisition.
I’d argue that we aren’t really shown the majority of the VI Legion’s and Space Wolves’ personality type.
Russ, Grimnar, Blackmane, Stormcaller, Fell-Handed and Strifeson are the Space Wolves we hear the most about but I’d offer that the most common personality type for the Space Wolves would be that of Dragongaze, Bloodhowl and Ironwolf.
A whole hour of Space Wolves..*Drools in Fenrisian*
“What if Viking werewolves in space?”
"Lupercal" while being the famous last name of the rebel Horus, is also the name of the sacred cave that bore the she-wolf that suckled the founders of Rome; Remus and Romulus.
Wow I never noticed that. Makes sense that his soldiers would be known as the Luna Wolves.
Slightly more subtle than Ferrous Manus leading the Iron Hands....
Horus and Leeman the emperors wolves.
There also was a festival in Ancient Rome called `Lupercalia` in which the priests involved got drunk in mentioned cave and then ran through the streets half naked hitting people with whips they had fashioned from the hides of freshly slaughtered goats. Apparently getting hit by them was a good luck charm of some sort...
@@fritzfurz6442Roman holidays were wild. "Ah yes, the festival where we impale 862 children and set them on fire. Mixing the ashes into your bread is a mild aphrodisiac."
@fritzfurz6442 a fertility festival, the priests would target women, especially young women. Those who were whipped were guaranteed to become pregnant the coming year
Been waiting for the Vylka Fenryka history for 2 years and the Oculus never disappoints!
Oh I've been waiting for this one. Happy days.
56:01 also love the politically tame version of Russ' words on the Renemberancers when his actual words were "arm the bastards and maybe they can win acouple of wars between verses" 😆 🤣 😂
"Wolves! Your Primarch is trying to fight a dozen Nobz with a broken bottle he found at a bar, and half a chair leg! Stop him!"
"..two caskets of Ale says he kills at least three Nobz with the bar stuff before he has to start using his fists."
"You're on!"
*grumble* "..Bloody Space Wolves."
OORAH!
As a Dark Angels fan I can show nothing but the upmost respect to my favorite rivals. Traitors would rue the day the Wolf and the Lion return to compete in a contest of revenge against them, a contest unlike the stars have ever seen before.
Well, a year later and we finally have the Lion's return so now all we need now is the Wolf and I'm convinced that the 3rd loyalist primarch to return will either be the Wolf or the Khan unless GW pulls a fast one on us.
It's criminal that Oculus doesn't have over 100k subs. CRIMINAL! I'd sub again if I could.
However, it's good to see his ever growing patreon gang. Proud to contribute.
His material appeals to people with very specific tastes. The first person chronicle of a fabricated history in a setting built on unreliable narrators isn't exactly primetime viewing.
@@edmondarmstrong1834 You must not a fan of modern cable news, or human history, then? The only reliable narrator is the one you listen to enough.
But I only came here to agree with the original poster, I was like: _"Yeah, I should definitely sub for this level of lore-craft in an ocean of a lore universe that has lately been getting a lot of loud, soundbite addled pretenders."_ To my great shame, I forgot I have been subscribed for a few years already, and cannot sub twice.
The opening to this immediately reminded me of the moral of Vonnegut's Mother Night, "Be careful of who you pretend to be - you are who you pretend to be."
It's always a good day when Oculus Imperia graces us with a new Chronicle:)
In my head Bauldamort is the servator skull in occulus office.
A long awaited new chronicle...
Indeed.
As a Terry Pratchett fan, I appreciated that opening reference to the Discworld's Law of Narrative Causality.
Never better said - much anticipated and gratefully received!
My favourite Astartes chapter by far. I love Russ and his legion, they are just bursting with interesting lore and I like how they have weaknesses and dark times in they're history and yet came through despite they're draw backs.
I also like how (atleast from my perspective) they share alot in common with the World Eaters aka the Warhounds (My favourite traitor legions.) In more ways then ethier of the two would care too admit. They almost seem like they would have been close legions much like the Emperor's Children and the Iron Hands or the luna Wolf's and the Blood angels. Instead they were almost natural enemy's. I love it all.
The moment when Oculus releases a new chronicle, small tear of approval sheds from His eye upon the Throne
The Emperor: "I definitely had nothing to do with where the primarchs ended up. I definitely didn't know where they were. It sure is convenient that the wolf primarch ended up on the wolf planet, though. Heh, yeah, weird. Those chaos gods sure are funny. Heh. Who would have thought." (nervous sweating)
There are no wolves on Fenris.
@@iowadrummer7didnt he get raised by wolves?
@@iowadrummer7there literally are? He was raised by one and for a while fought alongside two
@@user-iy5ww2hj4pit’s a quote from the lore.
I love the mild grumbling and subtle criticisms you have towards the Space Wolves and their abhorrence for written documentation for their own history. It perfectly communicates the frustrations a chronicler of the Logos Historica Verita-charged by Roboute Guilliman, the Imperial Regent himself, with creating an at least semi-accurate history of the Imperium-would have with such practices, it really lends itself to the immersion.
Of all the founding legions of the Space Marines, the Wolves are noticeable in how different they are in the 42nd Millennium in comparison to their inception. Had one knowledgeable in such matters been told a legion would fall to Khorne, at the outbreak of the Crusade the 6th Legion would likely have been the first guess, given how much murder, both of combatant and civilian alike, seemed second nature to the Wolves. Even the introduction of Russ arguably did little to change that: still wanton, irreverent killers, possessing perhaps more discipline and culture than before, but killers nonetheless. One can only wonder at the revelation post-Heresy that prompted the 6th to change in character to the more noble, pro-civilian chapter they are today. Perhaps it was the revelation of how easily their blind, savage loyalties could be used to manipulate them as seen at Prospero. Or the revelation that in courting isolation and distance, they thus had no true allies. Either way, the loss of both their most beloved leaders certainly played a role by the end of the War. Regardless, for the Wolves their violence and hypocrisy were their downfall, and one can only imagine it took enormous and deliberate self reflection to become what they are today. Especially since certain factions are definitely not keen on forgiving their transgressions...
Khorne would love to claim the wolves, but I think a different god already has their claws sunk into them.
What is the curse of the Wulfen if not a change of flesh? Do they not lie and deceive their allies and themselves about their very nature? Do their rune priests not wield sorcery? Do they not read signs in the stars to divine the future? Do they not summon and bind tutelaries from the Warp itself?
That's not Khorne though, it's more in line with Khaine.
@@randombencounter263 Huh, now THAT is an intriguing argument that makes way too much sense. I like you.

This was an EXCELLENT record. Wow!
It’s cool to think about how for the early years of the crusade the emperor campaigned with his two wolves by his side the 6th and 16th legions.
Even before their transition to the sons of Horus the Luna and space wolves share more athletic similarities than any other legion other than the usage of the wolf head. Top nots were common in both legions the tendency to leave the armor looking rugged and battle worn with little to no ornamentation. And both shared a doctrine of savage discipline.
Words cannot describe my excitement for the Tactics & Structure follow up
The Inquisition forced him to re-upload the video. Change my mind.
I always got the impression that the canis helix came from the tribes of fenris, from the mythical past of old strife; and Russ came along in a fortuitous conjoining fates the produce the vylka fenrika!
The Emperor, Beloved by All, has graced us this day. Ave Imperator.
There's a bit of irony in the fact Horus would do to the Space Wolves and Russ what the Emperor did to the Thunder Warriors. Taking the most loyal and strongest of each perspective force and throwing them against the wall over and over in hopes that they would ultimately break so they didn't need to be dealt with personally later. Just as the Emperor saw his Thunder Warriors as a useful tool that must be done away simply due to the fact there were indeed too good at what they were made to do and could just as easily turn on him later Horus must have seen with what contemptful ease Russ killed his other two unnamed brothers and realized that if he was to defeat the Emperor Russ needed to be done away with first.
It goes to show Chaos undivided has a delightfully sinister sense of humor in that what the Emperor assumed would be mankind's salvation was ultimately the very person used to bring it to the bring of falling. In many ways Horus was the Emperors Karmic payback for betraying the Thunder Warriors.
At first i didnt have much love for this channel. Now its become another source to hear the great lore of 40K.
You are a gift to this community. There has never been a better time to be a 40k fan. Thank you for this vid. Praise the Emperor!
Nika , THousand Sons, 2 Episodes on Prospero, now Wolves.... monstrous story arc!
Oh how I have waited for this chronicle. The hints throughout the series, occluding to the darker nature of this legion's early history. I cannot wait for the follow up. Fantastic work as always Oculus :)
Thank you for providing increasingly higher quality content on a consistent basis. Very well done.

The historator will report to the Undercrypts of the Imperial Palace for... reeducation.
I'm a Wolves man, through-and-through. This video is simply exquisite! Thank you, and you have a new sub! Cheers mate.
Interesting that The Fang was built first and other legions followed suite with a home world stronghold of their own.
Also, carve a warding eye in your room, men.
Truly the chronicles on the astartes are some of your greatest pieces of work, know that they are appreciated, and deeply enjoyed.
Love your videos, and I especially love how you go over everything about an event, covering all parties. Ave Imperator

Dudes: _Do some war crimes_
Emperor: "This is fine, good job"
You can't not not-love Big E.
19:59 I love the advanced communications tech here, "Hold on I'm on my hamburger phone"
I've always been partial in fantasy settings to northern landscapes and warriors stemming from those environments, but the barbarians that are the norm are too simple and boring in character. It's great that the space wolves are more complex in nature, as individuals and as a chapter. I also like how you can see a mix of germanic, scandinavian and celtic tribal culture in how they are depicted. Thanks for this great lore vid!
This channel is very underrated. Keep up the good work.
Thank You for hard work. Don't change anything. If You can, add something more about Oculus or His/Your Problems in modern Imperium. (like Interrogation piece) That one was... :)
Greetings from Poland and all my friends.
Ave Imperator. Gloria, In Excelsis Terra.
Emperor's Trefoil legions was one of two things: The 3 Legions the Emperor actually intended to keep along with his Custodes after the Crusade. *OR*, the 3 sacrificial Legions the Emperor designed and believed would be the 3 primary Legions that would ultimately fall to Chaos, knowing that the Horus Heresy(His first would always betray him) was always going to be a part of the bargain for conquest.
Which is now why the Imperium is stuck with viking furries, and fiery hug-monsters.
And chaos is plagued with _"its just a prank bro, I'm loyalist"_ manlets in varying colors of green.
Manlet? Alpha Legionaries were taller than normal
That’s what one of the books says, and the OI report on the 20th.
Another amazing video Dear Chronicler been watching for years and much like Baldermort you suck me into the more with just how well made your videos are. Plus it does help that this is a Space Wolves video and I love me some Space wolves!
I remember when some legions were lucky to get 15 minutes. But Russ' boys get an HOUR.
WOOF.
Continue to be in awe of these. Wonderful video as always.
"There are no wolves on Fenris."
I still don't get that.
Magnus' implication here is, that the wolves of Fenris decent from humans that have been completely taken over by the Canis Helix, during or even before the Age of Strife.
Hence, there are no wolves on Fenris.@@Deridus
I've been waiting a long time for you the history of one of my favorite legions. I do have to be careful while listening to you, however. Your voice is so soothing that I often fall asleep and have to rewind or start the video all over.
New Horus Heresy Timeline map is out and it looks like the Second Primarch (if we believe Fulgrim's account) was the third found Primarch after Leman and before Ferrus while the Eleventh was found like a century later.
Another excellent account, you bring a beautifully nuanced feel to this lore.
Admirable and well-created content Chronicler, well worthy of the Vulka Fenrika. Thank you for this.
Forgot about it yesterday and now happily watching! Great Job as always Oculus!
I love all your videos, man, this is one of my favorites. Thanks, Oculus!
You kill it every time dude. This was great.
20:15 Space Wolves with Lasguns? What?
Another excellent work Occulus! Hope the Tactics and Structure video is just as long!
I know it won't be, but I'd fucking shit myself laughing if it was an hour of Oculus yelling *WOLFWOLFWOLFWOLFWOLFWOLFWOLFWOLF* into his mic repeatedly. With saliva and all.
Thank you Oculus, truly a treat
Always looking forward to another upload; you hold yourself to a very high standard, Historator!
The legions of the trifoil, utterly unique in their attention by the Emperor, except for all the other ones.
Find me the legion that the Emperor said "Meh, whatever". That is a legion to watch!
I love the Vlka Fenryka, there an awesome legion of marines.

Woah, woah, woah. Back up, terrified? The space wolves _terrified_ orks?
When they lack for numbers, Orks tend to panic and lose their mindless momentum.... the more there are of them, the more motivated they become to crash like the tides.
hard to believe these would later become the ones that fought against the grey knights and an inquisitor over civilians
Great Video!
I always like hearing the lore of the rout
