    NOTE: I see that some of you are saying Blackthorne only dreamed he was back in England. Perhaps, but the episode title is a reference to what Taiko said when he died, that life is strange and feels like a dream of a dream. Besides the cross, and maybe Blackthorne simply got another cross, I see no reason to think that was a dream.

    • @AdamH7
      @AdamH7 28 дней назад +69

      It was a nightmare of his future without Mariko or Japan. He's even dwelling on it at the moment he nearly commits seppuku as to not arrive there. It's very clearly a nightmare because he has Mariko's cross, which he actually let go into the water. He even said to Mariko he would rather be at sea than at home with his family, he was running. He wouldn't go back just to die like that and have ignorant grandchildren.
      Also Toranaga isn't letting him leave Japan even if he wanted to and the real historical person he's based on doesn't leave Japan.

      in the Official Fx SHOGUN Podcast (also available on RUclips), it is explained that it was a dream of his return to England, the future he was so sure would be his fate for 99% of the series. Idk about Blackthorne being a white saviour at all. In the end, Toranaga didnt use his fleet or cannons because there was no fighting. He provided some information but nothing pivotal that he wouldnt have found out from Muraji or Mariko or any of his spies. As Toranaga says, his banner would've survived without the Anjin.
    What Blackthorne DID allow for tho was the fact that Toranaga could work with some level of impunity considering most of the time his enemies (well, at least the council of regents) was distracted by the barbarian. So while he wasnt pivotal, he was helpful in a sense

  • @AdamH7
    @AdamH7 28 дней назад +47

    The flash forward of Blackthorne wasn't real, it was a future he feared would come without Mairko. He's even acting like he's seeing it as we are, that's why he was so ready to commit seppuku.
    It becomes an impossible future when he parts with Mairko's cross on the boat.

    I don’t think Blackthorne was a white saviour which is what made the show so refreshing! He was our way in to seeing the Japanese culture but he did little to actually actively impact the story. He was a pawn throughout and his journey of recognising the beauty of the new culture he found himself in echoed our own journey from it being a brutal first episode to being able to appreciate the beauty of the final episode.

Pachinko is not. And Blue Eyed Samurai was animated. BES was great, but animated series just don't attract the same gravitas as something like Shogun.

    Him simply having skills that the Japanese do not and having to teach them does not make him a white savior necessarily. There are reasons that he has these skills, and the Japanese do not. It would be a white savior Trope. In the show Blackthorne is portrayed and an unambiguous fool, and the fact that he has certain skills that the Japanese do not simply due to his background. In addition, the show spends a great deal of time having Blackthorne learn about the Japanese people and culture. Its not like he simply goes into a foreign land and knows everything about it and how to do everything better than the people already living there.

And i find it unnuanced and offensive. The hole white savior thing and religion is actually addressed in the last episod.John Blackthorne says "before she died, i spoke before god, not my god not your god... just god" .Blackthorne also adresses the white savior thing, when he said, i came to use u... But he didn't... He got used as a pawn ... Not much white savior in that... Grace I’m sorry but the simplest answer is the correct answer and if the vision at the start of the show shows him prominently holding a cross (simultaneously with the present) and then at the end of the episode he lets the cross go, that’s showing that the vision was a hallucination, not a flash forward, to the audience. Making it complicated (by having a dissonance like that) is just bad storytelling which this show has (imo) never done.

    I think that one of the main points which the show tries to convey is that Death has meanings just as life does. John Blackthorn’s character basically creates the contrast point of view representing the renaissance idea about humanity during that time in Europe. However, he eventually understood that Bushido culture, not only because of Mariko but also the consequences of his own way of life. In one episode, he met his crew member again in Edo, and the crew member confronted him that Blackthron’s own ambition of finding the location of Japan destroyed everyone’s life on the ship, so in the end Blackthron’s individualim led to the sacrifice of the others as well. John understood the meaning of death through attempting to commit Sepukku to save the villagers.
    Also the beginning of episode 10 is a dream sequence. That crucifix is like the spinning top in Nolan’s Inception - tells the audience that it is not the reality. It also signifies that John’s understanding of life is like a dream in a dream, so death is like final awakening to a certain extend and has meaning

    • @phantomzxro1
      @phantomzxro1 28 дней назад +2

      I read those scenes a little differently. I don't think John was seeking ambition. That was just his crew being salty considering it looked as if he was raising in the ranks, John just wanted to be free and when he was at sea he was. I do think he started to respect the culture and see the dirty side of his own. I also think him understanding death was a mixed bag. I don't think he accepts it as the japanese given his f* it comments being a bit more in line with he has nothing to lose at this point.

    A flower is only a flower because it falls. It recaps all of it, thesheer beauty of the show, its poetic side and the harsh truth about life it tells. It's been compared to GOT very often, I believe that if you go that direction than Shogun would be a GOT prequel about Tywin Lannister's rise, the show that everyone would like to see. The title of Shogun being the Iron throne, it's obvious. I think that Toranaga's line about the Anjin being a source of laughters for him defeats the argument of the white saviour story. Blackthorne's a pion like the others and his role in Toranaga's plan is to be a distraction, a focal point for his ennemies so he can move in the blur. Crimson sky didn't need him to be succesful. In a way, we, the audience, are like all the others: we were so focused on Blackthorne's importance that we didn't see what game was really played. It was a strong and great show, I really loved it and I wouldn't want a second season for the world. Just like Wandavision, it needs to be a very special moment of TV, a cherished memory. Like for Wandavision, we must mourn but what is grief if not love persevering ? Shogun was a masterpiece and it's now over. After all, a flower is only a flower because it falls.

    Only by knowing when to fall
    Do flowers become flowers
    And people become people. Dear Grace, I would like to have heard something from you about the poetry in Samurai society. Yes Mariko is just a piece on the board for Torunaga but I think he truly respected her as well. Did you know that the Samurai clans (the men and the women) had poetry parties where you had to come up with the kinds of spontaneous lines that Mariko produces. If you were crap at that you were considered a somewhat crap Samurai. Last week a regional governor in Japan quoted the real life Mariko's death poem in his reignation speech and, I'm happy to say, drew the condemnation and indignation of thousands of Japanese. I can't see any US politician quoting Emily Dickinson or Stevie Smith. Maybe one day. I guess I'm alluding to that poetic regard for fate and our short time on earth...the Wuwei of life.

    Yabushigue and Toranaga are men driven by the desire to survive. Reason we see how they bonded in the end. Both harbor deep, secret ambitions: Yabushigue seeks to align himself with the victor, frequently switching allegiances between Toranaga and Ishido to secure his position among the regents. Toranaga, on the other hand, aspires to become Shogun, a goal heavily influenced by the encouragement of his friends and family who are prepared to make sacrifices for his success, emphasizing the importance of loyalty. Yabu initially doubts Toranaga's ability to defeat Ishido, but ultimately, Toranaga prevails. As a strategist, Toranaga recognizes the futility of the "crimson sky," predicting significant losses, including the betrayal by his brother. In the first episode, the Fuji husband is upset and poised to defend Toranaga against Ishido's accusations, his eldest son consistently acts impulsively to protect him, and the grandfather advises other Samurai to remain loyal to Toranaga, knowing well that a ruse is necessary. The tension in these scenes is palpable and upsettinh to watch. Markio, driven by a desire for death to honor her family and her father's legacy, held a special place in Toranaga. He viewed her like a daughter and respected her wishes deeply. Toranaga knows it's going to be lonely, having Blackthorn to keep him entertained (he always found him amusing) during his many losses ... Shows.... a reason why they need each other! Blackthorns doesnt want to go back to UK, he secretly wants to stay

So he did everything that it would NOT come true, tried to commit seppuku, get rid of Mariko's cross, etc. Neither in the book nor in the miniseries of 1980 did Blackthorne return to Europe. And the man who Blackbourne was based on never returned to England and died 20 years later in Japan.

    Writing a sequel to Shogun is a huge task, writing a sequel to a well loved classic book is beyond incredibly hard. You'd really have to have a lot of guts if you were the show runners/writers.
    The obvious choice would be to do Clavell's next book, but I'm not sure a series based in Hong Kong would get greenlit.
    The Christianity part is a bit amusing, since the person Toranaga is based on after gaining power threw out the missionaries and persecuted the Christian Japanese, virtually extinguishing the religion for a couple hundred of years

    I think Ochiba and Toranaga had a history together, but they separated on bad terms. Perhaps Ochiba had some grudge, which made her slightly lean against him, and reluctantly side with Ishido. Upon Mariko's death, Ochiba changes. I'm sure she must've been thinking, "If I never sided with Ishido, it didn't have to come to this."
    Or maybe Ochiba wanted to be reunited with Mariko the whole time, but it was Toranaga that stopped that from happening, and that's why she sided against him.

    Edo period shogun series would be interesting. 200+ years of intrigue, political power plays, and smaller conflicts. Or you could go prequel during the sengoku period following the previous 2 great unifiers. Either, it would be more western produced Time period J-Dramas.
    I will say the "white savior" aspect are just a fact of history, as William Adams (blackthorne) was a valuable asset to Lord Tokugawa (toranaga), and made a Samurai in his service, being an exchange and not Mighty Whitey saving the native or being better at a culture than the natives in a why that elevates him above them to show his innate superior existence.
    Also, they changed aspects for the novel and tv productions, but Adams actually died in Japan at 55.
