You said "...worst thing that can happen..." when it's clearly NOT the worst thing. It's a lot closer to the 'second-best thing' and the "worst thing that can happen" in most situations is gravely bad.
"Sure you should ask her out. What's the worst that can happen, she says no?"
No, something in vicinity of 'worst' is that her crazy ex identifies you as the person standing in the way of their relationship with their one true love and soulmate and decides to puncture your brake lines right before your trip to take your grandmother and niece to visit your brother and his family up in the mountains. Then your brakes fail down a steep grade, you crash into a bus full of nuns which catches on fire, your niece and grandmother expire over the next 6 painful weeks in hospital, you're paralyzed from the neck down and your whole family blames you for the death and destruction caused by the wreck.
Ya, I'd say that's as bad as it can get. Are you talking from experience?

The worst thing that can happen is when George Carlin did a routine called...I Kinda Like It When a Lotta People Die...1 and 2 days before 9/11. His daughter released the album 15 years later. It is said he knew the people on the plane because he routinely took one of those flights on a Monday morning.

Good Mechanics Are NEVER LAZY, It's the ones that don't care about their Job that are the problem 😢
🙈👺
Isn't that a problem in all trades and professions but there are those that don't care about their jobs. Why are mechanics singled out for being lazy being crooked etc etc etc when we're working I'm badly designed vehicles with consumers or fleet managers that don't want to spend any money on fixing their junk but they haven't taken care of. Beating our bodies up backs joints knees wrists elbows you name it. Not to mention the thousands of dollars we spend to buy to perform our jobs. Name one other trade that has to spend that much money on their tools! In addition, mechanics as a hole are paid the least of any of the trades. For me, I was lucky. Working in the San Francisco Bay area where a lot of the shops were Union back in the '70s '80s. During my 43-year career I had 4 different jobs. Made excellent money at all of them especially the last one which was covered under the tipsters Union. I retired in 2014 today that job is paying over $100,000 a year plus Cadillac benefits. In addition it's an Aesop company meaning you get a huge payout after a few years. I wouldn't have retired except my body told me it had enough fun so I packed my tools.
The other advantage to being a mechanic is that you can keep your cars for a long time. My wife's car is a LX 5 l mustang it's been modified a little bit suspension and 355 gears. A little Street fighter. She keeps it in showroom condition and my '93 F-150 SVT lighting. Also in showroom condition. Are the day truck is up 93 stock F-150. Good shape nothing special well kept. Always vehicles were bought used for total of around $22,000. That wouldn't be a down payment of the stuff you have to buy now. And personally I wouldn't want it. Too complex and equipped with stuff you don't need. Also, being a mechanic you're able to take care of here Jeeps, boats cars etc plus do stuff around the house and using your mechanical skills to your advantage. I'll guarantee you our boat never went to the loading ramp with a dead battery in our wheel bearings on the trailer never failed. So, in closing, you can call the mechanics whatever you want All I know is a trade's been good to me and the skills I have have served me well so anyone that doesn't like mechanics you can go suck eggs and pay a couple hundred dollars at the dealership to have your cars fixed and that my friends is $200 an hour!
We certainly does display his knowledge of Chevy trucks and a Duramax diesel in particular. Oh that's right he worked for a dealer got excellent training and obviously took advantage of it and he drives one of those Chevy junks. Hey Ray, glad you found your nuts.
original engine/transmission after 300,000 miles = a well maintained DMAX with outstanding durability

Well, going to boy a new torque wrench today, because I need it. But still will have to do the turn 90 degrees twice on the head. Old ones did come loose, but got a pack of new ones anyway.
Excellent presentation. Thank you. As an original owner of a 2004 LLY with 320,000, I appreciate seeing your full thoughts and process on this one.
You are setting really good example for safety. Always double check before starting/driving/reversing that no-one is in harms way.

I chuckle every time I see your channel. I recently retired, my company had/has a fleet mechanic named Ray,,, we've called him Rainman Ray for over a decade. Some people refer to him in an abbreviated way as Ray-Ray.
what a difference a Dave makes
Great line !
Sosmeone HAD to say that eventually 😂.
Mr. Rainman is a great automotive technology teacher as well as mechanic extraordinaire.
This one takes me way back to 1982 had a Chevy diesel crew cab that the glow plug controller would constantly fail and not cycle the glow plugs off this burning up glow plugs. Spent a small fortune replacing glow plugs and controllers on that truck. Then took it with me to Hawaii where it never got cold enough to need the glow plugs. Haha problem solved.
Now here’s a place you absolutely use high grade parts. When that steering collar bolt came out, for a brief moment I thought oh no the element broke off that glow plug! 😱
Suggestion from an electronics guy. Before re-attaching the wires to the glow plug, since you are already in there, brush an emory board over the wire screw connector a few times to remove some oxidation.
I always enjoy your videos. They're a great way to start the day and you also learn something along the way.
I had a 1983 Isuzu P'Up that had a 4-cylinder Diesel engine.
It got over 60 MPG, and ran forever!
I always carried a couple spare glow plugs, just in case, LOL!
I miss that little truck...
The main reason I got it, was because the engine they used, was the same engines used in the Thermo King reefer unit.
Which meant, that if I broke down anywhere, basically any truck stop with a garage could work on it.
Having coffee in the morning and watching Ray great start of a day !!
Excellent explanation! Thanks for taking the time to do that. Happy 4th...

Thanks for another great video. I've been watching for years now (long before you opened your shop) and it's helped me and my kid a lot.
And may everyone have a good and happy 4th!
Well firstly, I love when I see you and dave double team a job. If yall arent swamped or there's a rush on a particular vehicle, its damn good to have that help. I dont know if shops normally do that or not though so maybe its just new to me seeing how a shop runs. But the fact you'd feel bad sticking him with the harder job, even tho you're the one paying him to work there is really telling of what kind of person you are. Just straight up honest. I wish I had a shop like yours around where I live in Houston. I've been screwed over by most of em when it comes to work I cant do safely in my driveway. Thanks for being a good mechanic Ray.
Thanks for taking us along on this diag, info, and replacement of the glow plugs. I had a little knowledge of them but now consider that to be much more thanks to your explanation of the function and the trouble codes. Not bad, 300,000+ miles on the glow plugs. Nice seeing Dave too. You have a nice "crew" in your shop. 😊
It may be just me, but I'd throw a couple of jack stands under the front end and get those big ass tires out of the way.
I would be a bit careful just chucking 12v to a glow plug for long periods of time like that. On most modern engines the current to the plugs is strictly controlled via a pwm signal, which in turn controls how hot the plug gets. This helps to prolong the life of the plugs. The easiest and safest way (safest for the plug) to test a plug is to do a simple ohm's check on the plug. You will either get a very low reading if the plug is good, or an open circuit if the plug is bad - it's nothing more than a heater element.
Exactly it's just like any heating element. It will only go so hot. Just like the electric stove top element. Fair test imo.
They are destination garbage anyway.
he's going to replace all of them anyway !
You do realize he did it with the old one. You know the ones not going back in the vehicle.
@@matts9011 Modern glow plugs are not like simple heating elements - most modern glow plug manufacturers specifically say not to connect them to 12v because you risk burning out the element or damaging the plug internally. They are designed to be operate from a controlled current source. Just go type 'Correct way to test glow plugs' into google - you will not find industry sources telling you to just chuck 12v into them. Admittedly these were not going to be reused, but the video does give the impression that this is an ok way to test your plugs, which is totally wrong. Years ago yes, when they were designed to take the full current from a battery, but most new plugs are not designed to take full current.
Learned about glow plugs today. Never heard of that before. Thank you Ray!
same! i had no idea diesels had no sparkplugs
I had heard of glow plugs, but had never seen one.
@@djspbb As a teen, I worked summers on a neighbors farm. He had diesel tractors. How are diesel engines stopped if there is no ignition system?
@@timd1833
Fuel supply is cut off instead of ignition.
Great question.
@@djspbb Same here, heard of them, but never saw one that I know of.
Have never examined a glow plug, but ceramic heaters do exist. They last a long time, can survive in harsh environments, and heat up very rapidly. But they are ceramic.
Many soldering irons have them.
That truck looks pretty good for a 300K+ mile unit! Well taken care of.

Engineers that design vehicles, should be made to work on them, try contorting themselves, working round corners, pipes, wiring and brackets to work around. They should confer with mechanics first. I knew that diesel vehicles had glow plugs, but I didn’t know how they actually worked. Your videos are always fantastic to watch. I learn so much from your videos. Many thanks Ray and Dave. You are both amazing to watch. 🫶🫶🫶

That was an excellent vid Ray....thank you
More than moderately entertaining, as are all your videos. Thanks Ray and crew!
Good diag, good execution, and confirmation of fix! Wish Ray was closer !
Ray is not only a mechanic but a one hand mechanic.
We were having trouble starting our John Deere 310SJ. The boss said to use ether and the operator said he wasn't going to blow up an engine. The boss said that just use a little and proceeded to squirt some into the air intake. $15,000 later the engine started just fine.
I rigged up a glow plug kill system so I could use ether, but usually I use propane as a start assist
All your videos are good,I always learn something new.
GenXTalks was sent one of those ratchets a few months ago to try out. Our suggestion was to change out the dial knob to a thumb switch to change the direction.
Just love watching your videos keep them coming
Never had a diesel engine and knew nothing about them. Ray has done a great job of educating me. 👍
For a 300k vehicle, that's a nice truck! I recently picked up a Sealey 3/8 zero degree type ratchet for close quarter combat on the bikes I own. Absolutely worth having. I priced up the Zero Degree units, and they were a lot of cash to get in the UK. Too rich for a hobby mechanic like me.
I love that your videos are so high quality, 4k HDR perfect :)
I always enjoy watching your video's the knowledge you are sharing with us by showing us how and when it is time to replace the parts. A keep on doing the great work you and Dave are amazing at entertaining me.

Hello Dave.
You don`t have to ask. All your video`s are great.
One of my parents friends had a diesel boat engine that had a glow ball. Before starting the engine you had to use a blowtorch to heat the glow ball until it was clearly red hot. Then you closed the engine and started it. If I remember correctly it could run on just about anything flammable, so fotogen, about any kind of oil or things like that. I don't know if it would run on gasoline but it wouldn't surprise me. It was an old engine, like real old and not particularly powerful or efficient. But it was incredibly reliable, as long as you took ten minutes to heat that glow ball before trying to start it.
I love the Eagle Scream for 4th of July. Thank You Ray

I like the zero drive rachet. I don't like the $149 price on Amazon.....hopefully you'll do better if you offer them.
Excellent channel, Ray. I support you thru buying your hats, t-shirts and coffee cups!
I have a 95 6.5 turbo and she's a beach at times to work on too.. Glow plugs are just as hard to get at .. But I still get really good mileage and it starts good as long as regular maintenance is done.
Good video Buddy ..
When you started my first thoughts were remove those wheels to make some space, as I could see that being in the way.
I sometimes have an issue on my volvo v50 diesel due to the fact that at least one or two of my glow plugs are not functioning, at any temperature above freezing it starts fine (maybe a bit of blue smoke below about 5 deg c), but get down to -5 c and it starts hard, and kicks out a lot more blue smoke, pull away and within a few seconds its fine, below -10 degrees its very hard to start. maybe only firing on one or two cylinders (of 4). next time i put it into the garage I will ask them to test the glow plugs and fit new ones, my plugs are right down the back of the engine between the engine and firewall so not an easy swap out.
That motor could do with an Italian tune up with injector cleaner in the tank.
Happy 4th to you, Dave and the whole family. Great video and I don’t even own a truck. Thanks for more Dave sightings. I still can’t believe that people are still giving you heat about the ‘used’ parts video; they should all be on your side with this subject. They are the same ones that will complain very loudly when it happens to them. Enjoy your day off. Click!
Yup. The worst part is it ties up a bay in the shop wasting valuable time and money. Especially when the part comes from out of town. Even one day is potential for hundreds of dollars, over a freaking ten dollar part.
I get why Ray is PO’d.
My suggestion to Ray? Ignore the trolls. Feeding them just makes them louder.
Nicely done Ray !
Happy fourth of July to you and your family and Dave too 😊
When I first became a mechanic, one of my first jobs was to cut foam out in a tool box in one of our mobile maintenance trucks. I cut out little spots for a set of glow plugs for a 6.4L Chevy, as I didn't know there were glow plugs. Everyone got a big laugh out of that, and I learned to never trust a fellow mechanic. That lesson has served me well since 1993.
I don’t understand the point of your story at all. What was funny about it?
Don't understand??? It's like sending an electrical apprentice for a wire stretcher lol
A mechanic understands his message.😂
@@SWATT101, yup. Or a left handed screw driver!
I liked the change the “blinker fluid”.
In electronics, we use to charge up small capacitors and leave them laying around. A new guy would always pick them up. The pop and ensuing scream would cause much laughter.
I just noticed, that those glow plugs are like the preheater elements on some ovens. If they wear out, the oven burner won’t ignite.
Happy 4th of July.... another great video ..thanks
Ray a different subject for you. A big thanks to you. I own a 2013 chevy volt in the past you did a vid about a car making a helicopter noise from the rear. Very informative Ray! Thanks!
I might have missed the end of your truck’s injector replacement . The tour of the facility where those new injectors are built was great.
Talk about close quarters combat. Ray must have rubber bones to be able to contour his arms in such tight spaces. I know for sure, I wouldn't be able to do the job from that side without lifting the front and taking the wheel out. Dave , on the other hand, is a silent and very effective worker. When you least expect, he has his work finished. Happy Fourth of July.

No no no nooooooooo. you can't get a good read on a failed plug. this is not a viable test to weed out failed but not open plugs. You need to either measure current through it, or take it out and visually see it glow. NTC Ceramic glow plugs are weird creatures, they are not all NiChrom any more.

very interesting how a diesel engine works. it must be the high compression along with the heat that makes it fire. whereas petrol engines don't have the compression and need the spark
Glove is dripping sweat. Gotta love Florida in the summertime.
the Bald Eagle scream was very Fitting!
With lifted on big tires trucks like this and a few others you've had you probably will have to invest in an air lift of some sort so you can lift it up and remove the tires for things like this. I remember my uncle had one that had the 2 pads on the front and the angled arm out front you'd lift the bumper or frame with to get it off the ground for doing tire changes or simpler things of that sort. Was a LONG time ago, and I don't know what they were called. Still, if you can't get a lift some sort of lifting jack would probably help in situations like this. Just a thought. Anyway, I didn't know about glow plugs on these newer engines nor where they'd be located. I know you use to have to wait for the glow plugs light and the plugs before starting older diesels like semi trucks, but that was all I knew. So, I learned something. So, not a wasted video to me. LOVE the sound of those Dirty Max engines idling. Like singing, "POWER" or something...lol. Thanks for the vids. You're a better man than any of those who claim you're lazy. In this heat, especially. I can't even get outside in this heat because I can't breathe in it anymore. So, kudos to all you folks who take this heat and work anyway. Cheers.
