  • An absolutely nerdy show 'n' tell of my new 4th generation Panasonic eneloop Nickel Metal Hydride AA cells. Let's now check the cell capacities out of the packet and then give them a full charge and discharge.
    Overview: All Eneloop batteries 2005-2014 - budgetlightforum.com/node/7336
    Initial discharge results:
    All 4 cells very similar: 1380mAh +/- 6mAh (approx 69% capacity)
    Pack date code: December 2013
    After a Refresh/Analyse (full charge, discharge to 0.9V and measure, full charge):
    1907mAh, 1891mAh, 1894mAh, 1895mAh.
    Presumably this will improve after a few charge/discharge cycles.

    This video changed my attitude about rechargeable cells. My wife used to buy me a set or two for our cameras, but now days we simply buy huge bundles of Duracell's and toss the old ones when they die, however I wanted something better for my Nikon 14MPXL 21 Power Zoom camera, so I purchased a set of Enelope, well two sets so I could always have a set on hand that was ready in case of a needed recharge on the main set. Not long after I found an old GPS unit on Ebay, like the Nikon it had suffered a battery leak, and like the Nikon, nobody else would bid on them so I got both for opening bids, and both were (thankfully) an easy clean up since the leaks only effected the door end of the battery holders. So now both sets are happily powering their units, the GPS is a hand held unit with tons of functions that will assist me with contests using my Ham set where exact coordinates are necessary and the little hand held GPS unit gives all sorts of data on location, elevation, lat and lon, and of course a monochrome map display since it is a small hand held unit of exceptional age.

    Nooo, I would have liked to see the results on camera and see you put the various eneloops to the test! I'd like to see more of these show and tell videos if you have things to show us! Sounds like a good idea for another regular series, maybe?

    Another great video! I've been using low self discharge (LSD... gotta love the abbreviation!) batteries for a while now... certainly can't complain about the self-discharge... now you're making me want to get some genuine batteries... have been using the turnigy branded LSD batteries since they started making them... and I was also wondering what you think of that charger... i'm looking for a decent (and cheap!) 12V input AAA/AA charger... preferably cycle / discharge capable.

    Good video Julian. I must admit that I haven't gone down the route of NiMh batteries yet but this video has got me interested.
    I didn't know that Panasonic had acquired Sanyo (it was back in 2010 apparently, so I'm well behind the times).

    I have 2nd generation standard Eneloops HR-3UTGA found from dumpster dive for pocket short wave radio and Pro BK-3HCCE for camera and they work great. I haven't seen a Panasonic making Eneloops, only Sanyo ones. I use a modern Duracell recharger to charge the accumulators.

    Hello sorry my english is not good. In Japan 4th generation eneloop's transcription changed "eneloop" to "Panasonic". Many eneloop users are sad. Many eneloop lovers are buy from US or another country, because they love "eneloop" transcription!

    Are these the best rechargeables in your opinion? What's the difference between these and all the others? I was looking for rechargeable AAAs on Amazon a while back and these never even came up in the search results. But Amazon do sell them. I wish I'd known at the time. If they're conservative with the specs that's a big plus for me knowing how many companies flat out lie about the specs.

    What is the best place to buy Eneloop batteries and chargers?

  • @---SwampMan
    @---SwampMan 7 лет назад

    Can an eneloop nerd like you answer this question?
    Just bought some eneloops to use in a trail camera. After getting home, noticed the small print includes this: "Do not use in water proof flashlight or any device with an air tight battery compartment." Since trail camera is obviously used outdoors in all weather, it has a well-sealed battery compartment. Whether it qualifies as "air tight," I do not know.
    Also, I should say that I previously used Energizer rechargeables thousands of times in the trail cameras in all weather with no problem (except for predictable loss of effectiveness).
    So, what are the chances the eneloops will damage my trail cameras? Are they likely being overly cautious with their warnings?
    Any input appreciated!

  • @kyoudaiken
    @kyoudaiken 9 лет назад +3

    Panasonic Eneloop (formerly Sanyo) are really the BEST NiMh accumulators out there. NO ONE can beat them! I tested all sort of "ready to use" cells and nothing could even reach any Eneloop cell!
    I use them everywhere I have to put these annoying AA or AAA Alkaline cells in. The lower voltage is not a real problem, they perform very well!
    If you use a wireless mouse from Microsoft, expecially the 3500er series, do NOT buy Eneloop Lite for it. It is much more clever to use the standard Eneloop. It keeps running and running and running... Much longer as the supplied Energizer cell!!! I can use my mouse up to 1 year without charging! At this rate it means that the cell will live longer than the mouse itself. Before the cell is worn out, the mouse must be replaced because the click switches are worn out before!!!
    IMPORTANT: NEVER EVER USE ANY CHARGER FORM THE SAME BRAND AS THE CELLS!
    These chargers are designed to wear out the cells as soon as possible. They lack delta volt recognition and temperature monitoring. These often only use timers for the charge stop!
    The best and cheapest charger is the BC700 series charger. Charge AA Eneloop cells with 0.5C current and AAA Eneloop cells with 0.2 current on this charger and you will have fun with these cells as long as you live!

    • @jusb1066
      @jusb1066 9 лет назад

      well not quite never use the same charger, but panasonic chargers are very basic and so were sanyo's, i actually have a very good durcell aa/aaa charger that has deltav and charges each cell individually. also some chargers are just plain rubbish even if they promise the world, i do fancy the same charger as julian if i ever get into li-ion cells also

    • @kyoudaiken
      @kyoudaiken 9 лет назад +1

      But you have to check them carefully, for one who does not know much about it, it is smarter to just avoid them and buy a BC700.
      Edit: One advantage of the BC700 is, that the maximum charging current is 700mA, which is at the upper top limit for most AAA cells. So one can do nothing wrong with it. :)

    • @MatSmithLondon
      @MatSmithLondon 9 лет назад +1

      I agree with your assessment of the BC-700 about its ease of use (I have both the 700 and the 900) but I think the reliability of these units is very poor. I don't think it's just because I got unlucky. I have bought 5 units in total due to needing to replace them over the years and even my latest two have two separate faults. I'm going to buy a couple of powerexes and be done with it...

    • @kyoudaiken
      @kyoudaiken 9 лет назад

      What are the faults of these units? Can't tell, my one (Technoline) still works fine. I also have Technoline BC-2500 and OPUS BT-C3100.

  • @SproutyPottedPlant
    @SproutyPottedPlant 9 лет назад

    @BloodySword I always crank my BC700 up to 700 mah with AA Eneloops I heard charging them a bit faster gives the charger a better chance of sensing the 'bump' or something at the end of the charge. They work well in my LED torches!

    • @kyoudaiken
      @kyoudaiken 9 лет назад

      AA Eneloops can easily be charged with up to 1000mA. So you will have much fun with them. :)
      You have to balance it a bit. Charging fast will lead into not fully charged and hot cells. Charging to slow will risk the chance that the delta volt is not detected at all. 0.5C for Eneloop AA (so 1000mA) is the ideal value for the charging. Takes 4 hrs and you get the most out of your cells. For AAA Eneloops I recommend 0.2C (so 200mA). It will take 6h but the delta volt is somwhat wobbly with 200mA, but the risk for overheating is very low as the current is low and the thermal cut-off of the BC700 as well as the time cut-off will do a great job.

    • @SproutyPottedPlant
      @SproutyPottedPlant 9 лет назад

      ***** Ooooh didn't know it had thermal cut off! Mine is Voltcraft IPC-1L but it looks just like a 700 but only goes upto 700mah or perhaps more with less cells to charge at once. Seems to work well on 700 apart from having to press the button a few times to get it there!

  • @sandmanxo
    @sandmanxo 8 лет назад

    Wow, that's decently lower results than my 2nd gen AA Eneloops give me using a La Crosse BC-900 charger. They only get under 2000mah capacity if I charge then at 1500ma rate, and I usually charge at 200ma rate they typically end up in the 2100-2400mah capacity. I've never tested to see if they actually are holding that much capacity though, as I typically use them in a low drain rate radio and recharge them 1-2 times a month over the past 3 years.
    Overall I love Eneloops when voltage isn't a concern, but I too have moved on to LiFePO4 and 18650 batteries to nerd out on.

      The voltage produced by a battery is determined by the type of chemical inside it, as they react with each other during discharge. You can't just make a cell whatever voltage you want.

    • @pangrac1

      They do now AAA and AA 1,5V rechargeable batteries, they have Lipo chemistry inside and DC to DC inner downconverter from 4,5V to 1,5V. They also have inbuilt USB conectors for recharging. Look at ebay or chinese shops like Banggood, Aliexpress etc.

    Eneloop has horrible customer service here in Canada. I think they had a bad batch a couple of years ago. I bought 8 4pc AA 2000ma packs and 3 packs so far have defective cells. The more research I do the more I'm finding people having the same problem with this exact battery. There is no warranty on these batteries so be warned.

      1.2V is the nominal voltage for that chemistry but fully charged they are at 1.45V also most devices can work down to 1V or 0.9V and there will be nothing to notice as long as the battery can provide the current to run the device.

      ***** Very true... NiZN were very promising with a closer to 1v5 rating... and would have been ideal for digital cameras... except that when the voltage drops it goes fast... so your battery meter could go from full and green to empty and red with one photo. Also, I've used several over the past 1.5 years... and binned about half of them... they self-discharge and never charge up properly again. Have one of the 'proper' powergenix charges and also had four of their batteries (now 2)... think they were a bit of a fizzer.
