  • Book 1, Chapter 56- This week we start installing our blackwater tank. However, as you can see, the struggle is real as we think our way through this. Not a whole lot of action this week but we do have some colorful banter for you. Despite a string of small failures... we did have a good time! And it's all about the journey anyway, right?
    Cheers!

Hi guys, great job on the tank and insulation buttt...should you not have primed and painted these areas first ? can't see it I know but seals everything up nice, like working with a new canvas, just a thought, keep going with your great work, all the best from Aus, Al

I totally should have. You caught me being lazy because we obviously wouldn't paint the insulation, and this will be behind the wall and hopefully rarely see the light of day, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to save time.... I suck

That is the largest black water tank I've seen in a boat that size..

The funny thing is, "Previous Owner did (insert task here) him/her self" automatically leads to 50% more time spent redoing bad work. Often phrases like " No one can be that stupid " , " Someone couldn't have done this more wrong if they set out to screw it up " , and " Come take a picture of this because no one will believe it " getting bandied about in the shop. You did right by taking her all the way down to the bones so you can know 100% what you're dealing with, and get all those well intentioned 'repairs' off of your boat.

Thank you!! Love hearing this from someone else lol this is one of the big reasons we’re documenting this entire project. So many times we’ve discovered something unusual and it leads to a billion questions. We never assume anything anymore!

how many gallons/litres does that black water tank hold? 50 gallons?

I wonder if boat builders have good reason to put holding tanks at a lowest point possible? Have you ever thought about that?
The Center of gravity on a boat is perhaps not quite as important as it is on an airplane, but I believe it is still of considerable concern in regards of stability and seaworthiness. And many times it affects the interior design of boats not readily understandable to a non professional. Safety is also a reason you find the galley on boats most of the time down below, where you have the least motion.
As a side note it was Finnish boat builders who built the Nauticat and they have a reputation of building very seaworthy boats.
That said I question if anything more than the hull of your boat was built in Finnland, due to the fact that many things on this Nauticat 38 seem not to be original.

For all our other tanks, I am in total agreement, but for this one we went with Nigel Calder suggestion of making a gravity drainable black water tank so there's no need for a pump when off shore. And I was actually thinking of balance because the other side of the boat will have the washer/dryer combo!

There's a mansplain kind of thing where the wiman and partner at the camera has a legit idea and gets shot down by the fella. Only so he can then break something and show why his inferior idea is inferior. I prefer men who listen to women and their pragmatic efficient ideas!
