  • Controversy and aggressiveness seem to be the order of the day when it comes to revamping superminis, with manufacturers going for shock value in terms of appearance and design.
Not so for the Kia Rio, which bucks the trend by getting neater and more mature. But it’s also gotten smarter too, with more interior space, brand new equipment and a peppy new 1.0-litre motor.
It mightn’t be as flashy as many of its competitors, but can the new Rio win over the B-segment with brains rather than beauty?
In this review, we take an in-depth look at the interior of the Kia Rio including its boot size, dashboard and back seats. We then run through performance, price and finish up with the all-important verdict - is the Kia Rio a good car?

I own a 2003 Kia Rio and been driving it now for a little over 14 years. I decided it was time to buy a newer car offering updated options like bluetooth, satellite radio, etc. I enjoyed my Kia Rio so much, I decided to get another. In the USA this car has a 10 yr warranty. Also I'm 4'10", so I have more concern with trying to find a car that is, I guess, small enough for me. If it's too big, I can't properly see out the back window (unless I'm only worried about a giraffe walking behind the car while backing up) and being able to reach the pedals.

Recent car history for me... 9 new VW Polos (changed after 2yrs on a PCP, since they became available), then a Golf. Was going to go back to a Polo this year as the price difference on the Golf is not worth it (imo). However went for a test drive in the new Rio and they will be getting my money (PCP) this time.
Payments are £50 cheaper a month than a similarly equipped Polo and the balloon payment £1000 less (both with £100 deposit and 12k miles a yr). VW's quality has also taken a dive compared to my earlier cars - South African, Spanish and German made ones.

Clive, i am in the same situation as you, on 5th Polo 1.4tdi after 1.8tdi Golf on a company lease. VW not what they used to be, water pump packed up on my 2.5yr old polo just recently (no cost to me). Seriously thinking of Rio. If you dont mind asking, how much is your payments per month?

Good review, I'd certainly go for this over a Fiesta, as the reviewer says, it's smart & clean cut, much more sophisticated than the bloated Fiesta which I've never really liked- and the new one looks to similar.
Previously wouldn't consider Kia, but now it's between this and the Polo.

John Falck-Therkelsen It's hard to take criticisms against Fords seriously nowadays because people tend to just criticise them because they're popular and a lot of people like them. It's almost as if criticising Fords heightens people's egos. Either way, if you don't like it, you don't like it, fair game, but I just disagree that the Rio is a more sophisticated car. Don't get me wrong, I love the Rio, I was considering purchasing one myself, but I got a Fiesta instead lol, I just think in reality it's evident that the Rio is at the end of the day, built to a budget, say what you will about the design of the interior, but the quality feels a lot better in a Fiesta. About the Fiesta being bloated, it is certainly a beefier car, but coming from driving experience, it makes the car feel a bit bigger to drive, not so much that it feels too bulky, but enough to make it seem like a more refined car. Plus, the Fiesta just puts a smile on your face when you drive it down a winding country road.

    • @avtomad722
      @avtomad722 7 лет назад +3

I take your comments on board and won't discount the Fiesta from my list, I do agree it must be a far sharper drive; however my comment regarding sophistication was made purely about KIAs new design philosophy, and that I find it refreshing after years of over styled
superminis (take a look at the new Micra for example), KIA it seems is taking the 'less is more' approach, removing the unnecessary crap from car designs and that should be welcomed.

We are about to change from a 13 plate fiesta ecoboost to a 17 plate rio 3 ,1 litre.
The elephant in the room for 1000's of 13 plate ecoboost ford engined cars is the ,10 year/ 150'000 mile wet Campbeltown change.
It's a 8 hour job and an indipendant garage that can actually do it will charge atleast £800(for will charge £1100).
Now that's a big chunk of money on our example with 108'000 miles and a value of £2700.
So the rio is slightly noisier with a chain, but will last longer in theory.

No, it doesn't come with turbo.
But 130hp (if not big) is enough for a car this size.
In my country, KIA offer Rio with one engine option, a 1.4i 98.5hp. It can go up hills quickly, even with automatic transmission.

M7md Hassan but, the boot is smaller, ford only has a 2 year warranty compared to Kias 7 and don't plan on bringing any adult friends in the rear passenger seats in the fiesta. there's no knee or headroom at all for a normal size adult like me.
also while I agree that the fiesta looks nicer from the outside, the inside of the new Kia looks better, and the Kia looks pretty good outside too.

    Camera angles are rubbish.
Try and show the exterior rather that close ups, gives you no overall view of the car.
