John Guy is my favourite historian for the life of Mary Queen of Scots. His research is immersive and he offers a balanced view of the Scottish queen. This is an outstanding overview!
I saw the Elizabeth and Mary exhibit when I was in London on vacation in October. For anyone interested in history, Iwouldsay that it is a "must see". Also if you are looking for excellent and very readable books on English history - have a go at any of John Guy's books.
It really was an extraordinary time, between England Scotland and France were three female rulers. I can certainly find a place of sympathy for Mary Queen of Scots. I wonder what the relationship between Mary I (Tudor) and Mary Queen of Scots would have been like had Mary Tudor lived longer.
I think its safe to think that the relationship between both Queen Mary's of Scotland and England would have been cordial as both were Catholic but of course we will never know
I disagree with you there Jane Dunn stated it was an impartial account of both Queens however it was so biasedly in favor of Elizabeth it failed in what she claimed. There are far better books than one. I don't think you can do a book based on both Queens and be impartial
@@SALeppard I never described Dunn's book as "impartial", and if Dunn herself stated it was, I never endorsed that statement. I only said it's a great book, because,as a dual biography, it proposes to get away from the "team Mary vs team Elizabeth" thing

I am entitled to my opinion as you are yours but the fact remains it failed completely be impartial which was as it was billed. I was quite disappointed in that fact. Books are usually written from a certain angle and bias which is fine as long as it reflects that and does does not claim impartiality. There are far better books written that this one. Still its one if the 100 plus i have of Queen Mary that gives it some merit..whithir i read it again is another matter 😂
So there WAS a tangible proposal for Mary's return to Scotland as James's co-ruler. I was certain I had come across this, but had not been able to put all the details together.
Yes Queen Mary did indeed propose that both she and James rule as joint sovereigns of Scotland in around 1584-85 i think but James had no wish to share the throne which was his mothers by right and ailled himself with Elizabeth, betraying his mother like so many did. when Queen Mary gave birth to James in 1566 she stated that he as so much Darnley's son she feared the worst for him, how shrewd she was. James did atone to an extent, for his neglect and betrayal of his Mother and Sovereign turning on Queen Mary's detractors the vile George Buchanan and the bastard Moray for procuring the ruin of his sister and sovereign. He also had Queen Mary's body moved to Westminster Abbey , reinterred in a magnificent tomb, in death Queen Mary's rights and memory have been honored, although it can be said too little to late
