Pepe Le Puke ! They played pure black metal on "Dusk and Her Embrace" and "Cruelty and the Beast" albums, there is literally no way you can argue against those albums being black metal. "Principles of Evil Made Flesh" is a bit like death metal with a sort of gothic/black metal atmosphere. And from "Midian" onwards they were no longer any kind of black metal aside from a few songs here and there.
To me Cradle of Filth is more of an Extreme Metal band with quite a bit of Black Metal influence and therefore sounds more like a Black Metal band without being one, but this just my honest opinion
Dissection is still my favorite black metal band of all-time. The atmospheric, symphonic, and hair-raising songs are many. They have a sound that is really hard to outdo in terms of emotional effect and pure evil vibe. Probably has something to do with the writer of the music being about as evil as someone could be. Oh, Emperor, Darkthrone, and Bathory are also all great. Mayhem too, in their own special way.

Shout out to the dude who said Kraft. Not my all time best pic. But it was nice hearing something other than” Emperor cuz they’re super musical and I’m a nerd”. Bathory, Moonblood , Katharsis, Darkthrone.
This genre would be hard for me to decide on. I like Bathory, Emperor, Gorgoroth, Inquisition, Darkthrone, and Marduk to name a few. I can't narrow it down to one.
My favourites would be Anaal Nathrakh, and Inquisition taking a close second. They both sound like nothing else in the world. Same goes for Blut Aus Nord,Deathspell Omega and Sigh. All these bands are equally insane.
This video disappointed the hell out of me. The comments section didn't. I was thinking what the fuck? No Bathory, Burzum, or Darkthrone? With the exceptions of Mayhem, Inquisition, and the one guy who mentioned Craft (he's right they do fucking kick ass and their sound is perfect), that guy gets it, the rest all mentioned artists (with the exception of maybe Emperor, but its clear they commissioned the making of this video) who strayed from the formula for commercial benefit or are total nobodies in the grand scheme of the genre's history or founding influence. At least a couple of the guys were wearing Bathory shirts and one of said guys, the one in corpse paint, was obviously playing around mentioning Phil Collins. I have no doubt he'd have said Bathory if he were more serious in the moment. This video was almost disrespectful man. Respect to Venom, hail Quorthon and Boss, RIP.
Black Metal influenced Cradle Of Filth's sound on their early albums ("The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh", "Dusk And Her Embrace", and "Cruelty And The Beast") but they didn't embrace it enough to be considered a full on Black Metal band.
For me personally: Emperor's "In the Nightside Eclipse" is the darkest and most atmospheric black metal album ever, although I have to admit that I kinda went out of the scene in the late 90ies/early 2000s, so I can't speak for most of what came after this. Also for me: Darkthrone, besides "A blaze..", wasn't ever actually that "good", they were an instant cult classic and essential for the development of the scene, but having a super raw production alone doesn't make you a "good" black metal band, and never has. It was something you oughta know and recognise back in the day, but nothing more. There is probably an argument to be made for Immortal, they had some huge influential albums, and one of the biggest Black Metal Acts in the mid 90ies was actually Marduk, they were the ones a lot of people in the scene looked up to. One of the newer Bands back then was actually Dark Funeral, and they kinda took the scene by storm, but they were also kinda comedic, everyone who experienced them live would probably agree :D And then there's Mayhem. I dunno, I feel they got way more attention by everything surrounding them than by their music. But, I give them one actual master piece: Wolf's Lair Abyss is hands down one of the best black metal albums/EPs ever produced, imho. And finally...Dimmu Borgir. Wether we like where they went with their rock star attitude or not...they were actually really good, they didn't transcend the scene by accident. They were really that good. Cradle of Filth...kinda the same. Although, even earlier than Dimmu Borgir, they kinda went away from pure Black Metal after their first album. Though it has to be said: We often define Back Metal just by the "Scandinavian black metal", which CoF didn't ever belong too. Just like Venom, they are from Britain, and they have their origins probably closer to Venom itself than most of the Scandinavian bands, who are more directly tied to early Bathory. Ah, well, let me put out a recommendation there, since no-one brought it up: Have a listen to the "La Masquerade Infernale" by Arcturus (track 4/5). They are beyond Black Metal most of the time, but their origins are clearly be heard, especially with Hellhammer (Mayhem) on the drums, and the voice of Garm (Ulver). Oh, and since some people in the comments brought up Dissection: Storm of the Light's Bane is actually one of my favourite metal albums ever, bt they can hardly be considered black metal.
Emperor,'s maybe "mainstream" nowadays, but still, they are totally right quoting Emperor so many times! Really hard to decide, there are so many BM bands that are very good... ( and so many that are bad..) . Bathory, Emperor, Rottting Christ, Mayhem, Taake, Blut aus Nord, Lustre...
No one spoke about MAYHEM, BURZUM, IMMORTAL, DARKTHRONE, SACRAMENTUM, DISSECTION, GORGOROTH, GEHENNA, DARK FUNERAL, MARDUK or VINTERLAND? No one?? Only two guys mentioned 1349 and SATYRICON, and the rest of them just forgot these two awesome bands? Are you serious?? And how can they mention CRADLE OF FILTH??? The question was on the "greatest" black metal band, not some "popular" shitty extreme goth metal band which used to be sympho black once!! And the worst thing was that they totally forgot those mighty First Wave Of Black Metal bands like BATHORY, VENOM, HELLHAMMER, CELTIC FROST, MERCYFUL FATE and others. The only "acceptable" thing for me was EMPEROR getting voted several times, thanks to them. It seems like we, the South Asian Metalheads, know Black Metal better than those Americans. -_-
This is so wrong. They seem to have no clue on what black metal really is. Emperor? Yes, they are just fine, too overrated for me. Nobody mentioned the black metal heavyweights - Bathory, Burzum, Darkthrone or Mayhem.
WHERE. THE. FUCK. are MARDUK, DARKTHRONE, İMMORTAL and MAYHEM?!?!?! İ know they're classics, every Black Metal fan HAS TO KNOW THEM in my opinion...! But İ would also say, definitely, without any breeze of doubt, that these are THE. FUCKİNG. GREATEST. BM-BANDS OUT THERE...! Even better than Emperor, even if İ like Emperor A LOT. Anyways, STAY FUCKİNG TRUE!!!! \m/666\m/
My top 5: 1. Burzum 2. Emperor 3. Watain 4. Dissection 5. Satyricon Honorable mentions: Wodensthrone, Bathory, Wolves in the throne room. I'll also mention Agalloch (who I'd probably pick over all the above bands), not exactly pure black metal, but still absolutely amazing
PRHILL9696 I think that, even if there are some instrumentals,Burzum albums can be labeled as black metal, and,in my point of view,he's one of the black metal artist that has represented better this genre...obviously he's no more "black metal" because of the two latest albums...however..maybe it's a question of tastes...
+PRHILL9696 What are Filosofem, Det Som Engang Var, Aske, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss? Some of the best atmospheric black metal there is. I am not a huge fan of more recent Burzum (post-prison) but to say he isn't black metal is pretty ignorant. Same goes for Darkthrone. Yeah the sounds are no longer strictly black metal (althought crust and black metal have begun to crossover, in a way), but you can't ignore albums like Transilvanian Hunger, Under a Funeral Moon, Panzerfaust, etc. Just from the few early albums, both groups were more genre defining than any of the bands mentioned in this video and still some of the best the genre has to offer. Face it, BM peaked in the early to mid 90's.
I see what you're saying but the point isn't what they are now, it's what they were at the time. If you read what I said, I acknowledge that neither of them are currently BM artists, but their most influential pieces were undoubtedly black metal. What would you say is the best band of the genre? I recognize, it's kind of a pointless question, but still.
Not huge on Wolves' most recent material in terms of black metal, great ambient album thought. Mayhem and Panopticon kicked ass with their latest albums though
First black metal band I ever heard was emperor, ever since then it's turned me on to bands like watain, satyricon, impaled Nazarene, and early enslaved. I'm from Long Island and I've been listening to black metal since 1995
Hard to pick one, Behemoth, Emperor, Immortal, Absu, later Graveland, God Dethroned, Marduk, 1349, and black metal aside, 1349 is one of the best shows I have ever seen, they didn't fuck around. There was no "how you guys doing?" BS, they just came out went right into it, it was a gauntlet, they played every song they had, we didn't get out of there till nearly 4:30 in the morning. Also those guys who did that song Raise The Dragon Banner, I think it was on an EP called Farthest From The Sun, that could be the band name it self. They were on an episode of Black Metal Radio a long time ago.

I get it: These guys never heard of Dimmu Borgir and Immortal.
It has to be either Mayhem , Darkthrone , or Bathory HANDS DOWN
Shout out to the dude who said Kraft.
Look, Emperor is a perfect band, but they could probably interview more people to get more diverse answers.
I'd have to go with Mayhem Dimmu Bogir and Behemoth
Is there State of Fear sticker on that black guitar in the time of 0:53?
The pitchfork of metal presents: why you shouldn't respect the opinions of anyone who talks to us.
† 野箆坊
Black Metal influenced Cradle Of Filth's sound on their early albums ("The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh", "Dusk And Her Embrace", and "Cruelty And The Beast") but they didn't embrace it enough to be considered a full on Black Metal band.
+Cole Jordan COF are one of the most famous black metal bands ever
PRHILL9696
But their not black metal. Never have been. They've said that themselves in the past.
Cole Jordan But they are one of the most famous bands in black metal that has ever existed
One of the newer Bands back then was actually Dark Funeral, and they kinda took the scene by storm, but they were also kinda comedic, everyone who experienced them live would probably agree :D
And then there's Mayhem.
Write a para' on *Behemoth*
Early Ulver is by far my favourite. Bergtatt, Kveldssanger, Nattens Madrigal. Three classics.
I agree, the Tarzan Soundtrack is the best black metal album. Also Fil-
inquisition for sure
i would have to say Dimmu Borgir for me, and Carach Angren is kicking ass too
No one spoke about MAYHEM, BURZUM, IMMORTAL, DARKTHRONE, SACRAMENTUM, DISSECTION, GORGOROTH, GEHENNA, DARK FUNERAL, MARDUK or VINTERLAND?
THOSE Americans. Sorry about them, btw.
Props to the dude who said Craft…
I have to agree with the general consensus on Emperor.
I've always felt like the lo-fi stuff was overrated.
Marduk -->Shitty
Immortal and Mayhem ---> Overrated
But I have to agree, where the fuck is Darkthrone
+MetalFan 666 Forgetting a major fucking influence? Any convicted murderers that may have slipped your mind?
+romaniahasmetal Marduk shitty... pathetic
Bathory, Burzum, Mayhem, Darkthrone , Drowning the light, Amystery, Nargaroth, Lutomysl, Sarcafago ,the list goes on
My top 5:
1. Burzum
2. Emperor
3. Watain
4. Dissection
5. Satyricon
Honorable mentions: Wodensthrone, Bathory, Wolves in the throne room. I'll also mention Agalloch (who I'd probably pick over all the above bands), not exactly pure black metal, but still absolutely amazing
Am I wrong or nobody mentioned Burzum or Darkthrone?
+PRHILL9696 It's sad,because they're the most important(and probably the best) black metal bands...but,however,it doesn't matter...
+PRHILL9696 yeah, you're right...but what do you mean for "mediation music"? (sorry,English is not my main language...)
"Ask the hipster"
What a joke.
Dimmu Borgir, Gorgoroth, Dark Funeral...those are my top 3 black metal bands
I'd say Taake.
1:25
The best taste in the whole video
Burzum hands down.
I'm torn between Emperor and Satyricon for the top position, with Summoning being a close second place.
Call me a dipshit but I have to choose between Wolves in the Throne Room, Deafheaven, Murmur, Mayhem or Panopticon.
all good choices except for deafheaven those guys are dipshits
Well, Sunbather is my second favourite black metal album. The first one is De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.
Pulse Demon
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas does it for me too. That album takes me places.
metalkarloz
That shit destroys me always...
I'm from Long Island and I've been listening to black metal since 1995
Darkthrone all the way \m/
My Top 10 fav BM bands:
10: 1349
9: Mayhem
8: Gorgoroth
7: Immortal
6: Carach Angren
5: Darkthrone
4: Burzum
3: Leviathan
2: Xasthur
1: Drowning The Light
good top 3
Inquisition! Great one.
The guy who said "no gimmicks just good music" man youre a toolbox. G
Must say, I am glad none of these experts said Immortal.
darkthrone
Agreed, probably the best BM band but Mayhem and Emperor are a close second
Tunaboy45
lol bro
What's with Gorgoroth, Burzum, dissection, Darkthrone?
