    Seriously, commentators didn't speak of the game nearly at all. They just kept saying the first word on cards, didn't talk about strategy, or anything that felt important for anyone that was newer to the format. It's not a good way to get new people excited about the game.

    • @WMDistraction
      @WMDistraction 6 месяцев назад +21

      Honestly this was not a good game for that. I’m a veteran player and could barely keep up cuz there were just so many interactions happening and thus actions being taken. Ettiene’s deck looped activated abilities on lands to loop other cards from his graveyard and keep his opponents’ boards under control. Brian was trying to gain value out of his creatures. Both could cheat on mana a good bit because of the Relic.
      But they were doing this multiple times a turn often simultaneously and in response to each other several times a minute. It was hectic.

    • @MrNbkelly
      @MrNbkelly 6 месяцев назад +1

      Just curious why there wouldn't be a consistent rule across all levels of play? The commentators were talking about what the judge 'might' do, and I was sitting here thinking "Shouldn't there be a predetermined action for something this simple?".

    • @pokedadsam9041
      @pokedadsam9041 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@MrNbkelly completely agree. The judge 100% gave a light ruling becuase of it being a PT feature match. You get a game loss for a deck check illegal deck and the game hasnt even started at that point; yet alone a full game going by and having an illegal card.
      Either this treatment needs adopted to be the normal handling; or they need to state it was a lenient ruling.

    • @watcherinmaze
      @watcherinmaze 6 месяцев назад +1

      Was going to say, when I played competitive that was a straight game loss. I am unsure if this is because they have changed the rules or because they didn't want to game loss someone on camera.

  • @rechtartig
    @rechtartig 6 месяцев назад +29

    @32:40 Kibler calls the judge on himself because he accidentally sees the top card of his deck while resolving the Jodah cascade. Then they have a protracted discussion because Hazoret was placing cards on the bottom, and they accidentally didn't preserve that part of the game state. But then right after getting his freshly shuffled deck from the judge, he uses Siggarda's ability to look at the top card. Was it actually a game rule violation to look at the top card while resolving cascade in the first place? Does Siggarda's "any time" only work when a player has priority, or when state based effects would be checked?

    • @caltran2410
      @caltran2410 6 месяцев назад +15

      From notes and rules on Sigarda: "Sigarda lets you look at the top card of your library whenever you want (with one restriction-see below), even if you don't have priority. This action doesn't use the stack. Knowing what that card is becomes part of the information you have access to, just like you can look at the cards in your hand. If the top card of your library changes while you're casting a spell, playing a land, or activating an ability, you can't look at the new top card until you finish doing so. This means that if you cast the top card of your library, you can't look at the next one until you're done paying for that spell."

    • @rocktop-games
      @rocktop-games 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@caltran2410 Yeah this. I couldn't tell the rules as well, but I play Sigarda both in arena and Mtgo (where you dont "look at" but get constantly shown on screen) and the only moment in which I am not shown the top of the deck is while casting from the top of my deck.

    • @ben_clifford
      @ben_clifford 6 месяцев назад

      @caltran2410 Although that is technically true, I think if BK had told the judge "but I can see the top card of my library because of X" while explaining the situation, then the judge wouldn't have attempted to shuffle, and may not have even issued a warning. Because nothing in the game cared about Brian having access to that information while resolving his trigger, esp if he was just going to have that same info once he had priority.

    • @rechtartig
      @rechtartig 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@ben_clifford while functionally correct, and possibly an avenue a judge would consider at like FNM, but at Comp REL, the problem is Brian cascaded one too many cards, less so that he would have known that card anyways once he finished resolving Jodahs ability.

    I see a lot of people being annoyed at a lack of live commentary on cards and specific strategy, so I feel obligated to point out that live game commentary in professional/tournament matches of MtG the way you may be used to from other games or sports is basically impossible in any meaningful way.
    Pro play, especially with decks like these, is a bad place to learn strategy or even just what cards do. Pros tend to take their game actions fast because for one, they're pros, they know what the cards do, and on the other hand they like to go fast because that gives them more time to think and their opponents less. That contributes to a rather fast pace and makes live commentary hard in any meaningful way. Sure, they could talk about what cards are being played and maybe what the effect is, but that's it.
    If you want more detailed play-by-play commentary, you'll have to look for analysis videos, or non-tournament matches where people play more slowly. I feel like the commentators are doing a great job considering the pace of the match and the complexity of the decks. Yes, you need to have a decent understanding of the game to follow the commentary, but that's basically who the commentary is by and for. If you want to learn Magic, welcome, but you're better off watching something other than pro play.

That last game is why you should always have atleast one for this matchup. Call me cynical but that’s just how I felt lol.
    Edit: I miss Marshall commentating and even Randy or BDM were commentating because they very rarely didn’t talk about the board. I don’t mind people going on tangents but my boy you’re a commentator for the game, commentate the game lol. I know the cards and am seasoned with them so I know what’s happening just by watching but if people who don’t know magic join they’re going to hear rambling and people putting cards in places with no context.

    at 56:30 I think Shuhei is not able to play both the aftermath analyst from hand and the Kellan from exile with 6 mana available due to the Aven Interrupter taxing casts from exile by paying 2 more?! How did nobody caught that xD

    Just a reminder that you exile Melira not put into grave. She is not quite a saffi for those who caught it :)

    If brian can look at the top card of his library. Why was it a big deal when he mis picked up cards and saw the next card?

    Great to see Brian back in competitive features!

    I get commentary coan be hard in complicated matches like this but these matches are where the small things matter the most. At least early on so we know why Kibler is casting things for free (off of hazoret and djeru) and so on. What a great match, though!

    A bit of cacophony during the judge call. As much as i love Cedric and Riley, I feel they should have let the judge call resolve before giving commentary.

      if takenuma hits any lands kibler doesnt have lethal, which the other player did hit, even though they missed the trigger.
