It's hyperbole ... he threw the game on purpose, for the purpose of showing his opponent, that he can forgo taking his queen and still not lose ... even though he could have taken his queen. It's like hitting your opponent with the flat part of your sword till they give up because they are exhausted, showing them not only are you not exhausted, but you are laughing and could have killed them anytime you wanted. While his opponent was trying their hardest he himself was taking in the scenery, taking his time and enjoying that the opponent couldn't find a way to beat him. It's like you can't embarrass a dead man ... he must live to feel it ... the longer he lives the more he feels it.

Probably not, as the computer marks this opening as inferior and losing for black. The computer refutes all the lines for this opening. It'll go down as a gambit not to play, in any serious tourney. It may be fun to watch humans play it, but thats not where the advancement of chess is.

It's more of a question of what novelties Eric has discovered in this openings and if someone chooses to write about the Stafford in an openings or gambits book. Also, even top GM's can lose to dubious openings if they are under-prepared or if there is some particularly venomous novelty. Just take a look at Fabiano's novelty against Ding from the first half of the candidates. If I remember correctly, it was really dubious but it was so venomous that the world #2 thought it could get him a win in the most important chess tournament of the year. Ofc, Ding is a beast when it comes to calculation so he managed to refute it correctly and still win though. But regardless, chess is about much more than just engine evaluations.

Taking the bishop was the better move. It was insane the guy in the background said that. Its also amazing i had stockfish on when the game was going and the move where the GM said he lost the advantage was the move. Great game. Very entertaining.
